Welcome to March ... It’s our birthday! The first ever copies of The Local Answer were distributed in March 2009 and our first Gloucester edition was published in August 2012. The style of the magazine has evolved more by chance than design during the last five years so, to mark this milestone occasion, we’ve listened to feedback from readers and advertisers and are extremely proud to present our brand new look for The Local Answer! We hope you like the improvements we’ve made and enjoy tackling our new Quick Crossword and Sudoku puzzles. We’ll keep adding new features of interest when we can. The whole team at the office, pictured here on the left, have been involved in making the magazine the largest, monthly distributed local guide across both Gloucester and Cheltenham. We now distribute 84,000 copies every month, with nearly 80,000 delivered direct to homes through our army of dedicated distributors. And, over the coming months we’ll be producing more editions to spread The Local Answer to many more Gloucestershire people. Watch this space!

In Gloucester we’re fortunate to have a lot of history. In fact, 2000 years of it! But, in the past, we’ve been guilty of underplaying it. Until recently, our City Council-run museums were the same as they had been when I’d wandered around them as a schoolchild (and that was quite a long time ago!). And they certainly didn’t tell the story of Gloucester in an engaging way. In 2011 we refurbished the ground floor of the City Museum in Brunswick Road and now have plans to complete the transformation by giving the first floor of the Museum a makeover – hopefully with some help from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The Folk Museum in Westgate Street has been closed over the winter during the week to give our museums officers the chance to refresh the displays there and carry out some maintenance work, but it is now open again, so do call in and see the difference! We’ve had some exciting events and exhibitions at our museums in recent times. In March (between 19th30th), we have the visit of the reconstructed head of Richard III. There has been renewed interest in the life of this former monarch since his remains were dug up in a Leicester car park in September 2012. He was Duke of Gloucester, so our claim to grab a share of this curiosity is a strong one. Consequently, we have begged and borrowed a number of other Richard III artefacts and are putting on a programme of speakers and concerts alongside the exhibition. For more information see www.gloucestermuseums.co.uk. In April, we will be displaying our collection of “Tudor Portraits” which haven’t been seen for some time – so that will be well worth a visit too. The Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum at the Docks is currently closed for a Heritage Lottery Fundsupported refurbishment and the Gloucester Waterways Museum, largely staffed by volunteers, is hoping for some HLF generosity too. We have some great history in Gloucester and we’re now starting to make the most of it.

Roast Squash & Chilli Soup
Delicious Dishes with Helen Kingscott
Very easy, very tasty and very reasonable to make! Save fuel by making it while something else is cooking in your oven, or double up the ingredients and freeze half for an easy meal another day. Ingredients: 1 butternut squash approx 1.5kg; 2 large onions; 4 medium vine tomatoes; 1 medium-hot red chilli 57cm long; 4 tbsp olive oil; sea salt; 900ml chicken or vegetable stock. Optional garnishes: Sour cream; chopped corriander. Method: 1 Pre-heat the oven to 220C/200C fan/Gas 7. 2 Peel the squash and cut into chunks, discarding the seeds. 3 Peel, halve and slice the onions. Halve the tomatoes. 4 Arrange the squash, onion and tomatoes in two large roasting trays in a single layer, adding the whole chilli to one. 5 Drizzle 2 tbsp olive oil over each trayful and season with salt. 6 Roast for 55 minutes, stirring halfway through.
The Local Answer
7 Discard any very dark looking onion strands. Split open the chilli and scrape out and discard the seeds. 8 In a blender, whizz the chilli with all the vegetables and the stock, in batches, until smooth – or put all the ingredients into a saucepan and use a hand blender. 9 Gently reheat the soup. Serve if wished with a spoonful of sour cream and chopped corriander.

GREAT FOOD, SERVICE & ENTERTAINMENT
The Local Answer has gone from strength to strength since the first issue (above) was published in March 2009. Initially serving the ‘Charlton Kings & Leckhampton’ areas of Cheltenham – with 5,000 copies distributed – we now produce 84,000 copies every month, delivering c.80,000 direct to homes across Gloucester and Cheltenham. The publication was launched to satisfy the requirements of two parties – advertisers with a need to convey their messages to Gloucester The Loc al residents in the ANS WE R area, and readers searching for local goods and services. Consequently, we focused on three key aspects (as we thought necessary) to make the publication work for advertisers – the best distribution, the best quality publication of its type and, of course, extremely competitive rates. Our paying customers were only going 40,000 DELIVERED

to get a return on their investment if our non-paying clients – the readers – ‘used’ the magazine. Fortunately we have got more things right than we’ve got wrong for both readers and advertisers alike. appreciating what the publication brings to them. Of course, behind this extreme level of success has been a fantastic team. As a ‘family-run’ business, the support from family members has been a key factor throughout – from helping to deliver the first issue, to being involved in all other aspects of the business as the company developed. With a committed and skilled office team, a growing army of loyal distributors, plus great print and facility suppliers – collectively we have delivered great success to so many of the county’s businesses and a wonderful ‘free’ monthly publication to residents. But we’re not finished yet! We will continually strive to improve the publication and its reach. New team members will be joining this month as we prepare for the future – making The Local Answer the best it can be for as many readers and advertisers as possible. Things that involve a number of different people are only truly successful if everyone plays their part. I’d like to thank every reader, advertiser, supplier, employee and, of course, my family and friends for the contributions each of you have made. Dave Kingscott – Managing Director Page 9

1 Snowshill Manor is a popular National Trust property and, in architectural terms, is a good example of a typical 15th to 16th century manor house. The terraced gardens were laid out in 1919 on the basic design of a cottage garden. The house once belonged to Charles Paget Wade (1919 – 1951), an enigmatic and eccentric architect and antiquary. He acquired not only a West Indian estate but also a very varied collection of items to fill his house – including bicycles, toys, clocks, Japanese armour, farming implements, and musical instruments. He donated these to the National Trust and they are on show inside the house.

Sitting in a sheltered hollow high up in the Cotswold Hills above Broadway and the Vale of Evesham is the lovely village of Snowshill. Most of the unspoilt and picturesque village is built from the locally quarried honeycoloured Cotswold limestone with the picturesque cottages clustered around the sloping green. The area offers gentle strolls and its elevated position offers superb views of the surrounding countryside. Sponsored walk date moved WIN TICKETS! Gloucester Rugby, in conjunction with their delivery partners for The Road to 2015 Sponsored Walk, took the decision last month to move the walk planned for 9th February to the weekend of 3rd May. The difficult decision was driven by recommendations around the safety aspects of the event due to poor weather conditions. The good news is that the walk now coincides with the weekend of Gloucester's final home game of the season against London Irish.

When it’s time to call the experts Our garden was in desperate need of some maintenance, including felling a tree which was causing a wall to fall over. The boundary of hawthorn, holly and other small trees had got out of hand and – after trying to keep it as ‘cut back’ as I could with my loppers – I knew it was time to get the experts in! I called Mark Clifford, and he couldn’t have been more helpful. He explained that, for any tree work, he links up with Oakey Tree Care – specialists in their field – to ensure everything is done properly. Following a couple of ‘site visits’, I was delighted to open my curtains early on the morning they were due to start and see they were already up the tree! Mark, Adam Oakey and his colleague Ben Durston worked extremely hard in difficult conditions but, eventually, had to ‘throw the towel in’ due to the lashing rain and high winds making things too dangerous. Although not quite finished yet due to the inclement weather and the inevitable disruptions they have encountered, we can already see how much better our new outlook will be. The view from my kitchen window is fantastic – I can now see the hills and trees over the road, and I even spotted a buzzard sitting there. Some of the disruptions – quite rightly –
L-R: Ben Durston, Adam Oakey and Mark Clifford. were when Adam and Ben diverted their attention to deal with emergency tree problems for other people. Funnily enough, one such person was a friend of mine who called me to ask if I knew of anyone who could help her – a tree had blown down in her garden and she needed two others removed quickly before there was an accident. I gave Adam her number and, that evening, she rang to say they had been round and it was all sorted (ahead of mine!). As they haven’t finished cutting the hedge or remaining trees back yet, we couldn’t
publish an “after” photo. I am assured and, judging by the great attitude they’ve displayed, have total confidence the job will be completed to a very high standard and they’ll clear up everything after them! It was great to hear that Mark works in conjunction with other specialists who advertise in The Local Answer too – including our columnist Julia Smith for her garden design skills. It is reassuring – and quite apt during the month of the racing festival – to deal with someone who understands that to get the best results, it’s a case of ‘horses for courses’.

In the Garden with Julia Smith
Grow at least one thing to eat this year! Gosh have we been going five years already? Where has the time gone? I thought I would look at 2009 quickly and see what was hot in the world of plants and gardens then. Well, hot plants were the black varieties which featured very strongly at the Chelsea flower show of that year – things like Black Bamboo, and the Iris ‘Black Knight’. Talk was of global warming and the lack of rainfall of the future (that’s a laugh for a start) and how the Mediterranean plants are the way forward (I still think the people of the Somerset levels would be better off with rice growing!) Well let’s get back to the present ... even if you have never tried before, do grow at least one thing for eating this year. Things for beginners to grow would be runner beans, courgettes, cherry tomatoes, and ‘cut and come again’ lettuces. Don’t plant a whole packet of seed (you can share a packet amongst a couple of interested friends). The cherry tomatoes need starting off inside in a warm place towards the end of the month. Varieties like Tumbler can be grown in baskets and pots and need no special training so are pretty fool proof. The lettuce can be sown in small short rows every couple of weeks so you get a succession of plants to pick over. No one needs 10 courgette plants unless they are running a restaurant – two or three are ample and really one is just fine if space is limited. The runner beans can be made into a wigwam of canes and five or six plants are enough for this – sow two beans per pot and nip off the weaker one to ensure good germination. I know that I nag but do keep on top of the weeding – they will start to shoot up now and it will make it so much easier later on if you get on top of it. Things like dandelions need to have the whole root removed or they will regrow, so if they are in awkward places they are best squirted with a systemic weedkiller such as ‘Resolva’ or ‘Roundup’.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year
guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’
Cloudy2Clear service the Gloucester, Cheltenham, Stroud & Tewkesbury areas and 3DXO LV ÀQGLQJ WKDW KLV approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense.
I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

The Local Answer
Will the bubble burst? After several years in the doldrums, the housing market has been picking up steadily over the last 12 months or more. At first it was thought that this improvement was restricted to London and the South-East, but actually it’s happening to some degree nationwide. It doesn’t, of course, solve all of our property-related ills. The construction industry employs 300,000 less people than it did six years ago and first time buyers continue to struggle to get on the housing ladder despite the government’s Help to Buy scheme being extended to more properties in 2013.
Does anyone know? It’s been good for those trying to sell property, with the number of jobs in real estate rising rapidly year on year – many of them operating in the rental market. But the questions that everyone is asking are will it last and could it have a damaging effect on household budgets? I don’t have those answers, and I’m not sure anyone else does either. One of the biggest worries is the possibility that the Bank of England will feel obliged to dampen the rise in house prices by increasing interest rates. We have all got used to them being at their record low levels and it would not take much of an increase for our monthly payments on mortgages to become a challenge. And yet, if the bubble bursts, maybe the impact on the general economic recovery will cause even greater damage.

‘Superior kit for superior results’ The Local Answer moved into a larger office at Ullenwood Court at the end of 2013 and we were faced with the prospect of spending around £3,000 to replace the existing carpet in the new area. The floor was particularly grubby in places, but we knew the carpet had only been laid a couple of years earlier. In search of a more financially palatable solution, we spoke to one of our advertisers – Garth Evans (pictured below) of Britannia Cleaning Services. Garth confirmed the carpet was of a good quality and would last for many more years – it was just in need of a thorough clean. Britannia Cleaning Services have stood the test of time – refreshing carpets,
curtains and upholstery in Gloucestershire homes and businesses for over 20 years. Garth explained about the equipment, that no harmful chemicals are used and the fast drying time (so important to us and many others). By the time he had advised the cost would be a fraction of replacing the carpet, we were convinced to use his service, and we are so glad we did – the result is fantastic! Of course, Garth wasn’t surprised with how happy we were – he’s been witnessing the responses of happy customers for over two decades – and he’s very proud of the service he
delivers. He said: “The investment made in the equipment is key – it’s superior kit for superior results. The engine used to drive the system provides at least five times the suction of ‘mains electric powered’ alternatives. “We also made certain we bought all the correct tools so they are ‘to hand’ for the variety of surfaces we clean and, while quality is of paramount importance to us, we’re extremely competitive on price too.” Having experienced the service and results for ourselves, The Local Answer has no hesitation in recommending Britannia Cleaning Services to others – you won’t be disappointed.

Local Policing with PS Tim Wood
of Barton Street Police Station
Have your say! We Want You to Have Your Say on Local Issues: • Do you ever see something that you think is a local issue that the Police should be tackling? • Do you ever wonder why the Police have taken a particular course of action in your local area? • Do you live or work in Barton, Tredworth or White City? If so, why not get involved with the Local Priority Panel? The Local Priority Panel meets once every 3 months (so only 4 times a year), usually on a Wednesday evening at 6.30pm, to discuss local issues and decide what the local priorities should be for us, their local Police. The meeting lasts 45 minutes, finishing at 7.15pm, followed by tea & coffee. Panel members are encouraged to complete a short survey with their friends and neighbours two weeks before each meeting to get a feel for what local people think. However, if you don’t have time to do this then don’t worry – it is not a condition for being involved as we recognise that you are all busy. The Panel is chaired by a member of the community – currently Pat Hurley. If you are interested in giving up just 45 minutes every 3 months to have your say on the priorities for your local Police, and to hold us to account for our actions to improve them, then please come along to the next meeting on Wednesday 9th April from 6.30pm at Barton Street Police Station. You can also let us know what you think on our online forum, where you can find details of our current priorities as set by the Local Priority Panel, with updates from your beat officers as they work on them. www.bartonstreetpolice.forumchitchat.com I would also like to make you aware of an exciting new Youth Forum that is in the early stages of being set up for Barton, Tredworth & White City. This project is being led by local youth workers and aims to attract young people from as many different communities as possible within the area. The aim will be to provide young people with the ability to have a voice on local issues that matter to them. If you, or anyone you know, are interested in getting involved – please get in touch. Finally, we have recently launched a new Facebook page for our team. Please ‘like’ our page to enable us to provide you with updates direct into your newsfeed and, of course, please use it as yet another way for you to tell us what matters to you in the local area.
