Stunning views and fabulous food The Edgemoor Inn is a beautiful late 19th century premises overlooking the picturesque Painswick Valley. Having heard from so many people about the stunning views and fabulous food, I went to try it out with a friend. To start, I opted for the Cajun Spiced Chicken which came with a mango, pineapple and blueberry salad and mango crème fraîche. The freshness of the fruit complemented the spicy chicken and sent my tongue tingling and left me wanting more. My friend chose the Prawn & Crayfish Salad with Marie Rose sauce and plum tomatoes – a tasty twist on a classic starter. For the main course I enjoyed a juicy, flavoursome Peppered Sirloin Steak that was cooked to perfection and served with chips, peas, mushroom, onion rings and

grilled tomato. My friend had a generously filled, tender and tasty homemade Steak Pie accompanied by chips and peas. We both agreed the crunchy chips were exceptional. The desserts triggered a “wow” from the pair of us too! I indulged in the fabulously rich Chocolate Brownie & Vanilla Ice Cream – it was divine. My friend tucked into Apple & Plum Crumble with Custard which, she said, was absolutely delicious and enhanced by the hint of cinnamon infused in the fruit. We were both impressed by the generous portion sizes for each of the courses – you certainly won’t leave the restaurant feeling hungry. With its fresh, modern interior and extremely friendly and helpful service, the restaurant delivers a genuine homely feel,

making you want to stay and relax long after you’ve dined. The extensive patio area is perfect for a lunchtime or evening meal, and I can only imagine the spectacular late-summer sunsets you’d witness with that view! The Edgemoor Inn is a wonderful place to eat. I’d urge you to try it – if only for the Chocolate Brownie!

Cosmopolitan The Cosmopolitan – or Cosmo – is said to have been created independently by many different bartenders since the 1970s. The general concensus is that John Caine – owner of several bars in San Fransisco – brought the popular pink drink to the west from Ohio in around 1987. Although the cocktail is widely perceived as a contemporary creation, there is a strikingly similar recipe for a Cosmo, which appears in the book ‘Pioneers of Mixing at Elite Bars 1903-1933’. The ‘Cosmopolitan Daisy’ substitutes cranberry juice and vodka for raspberry syrup and gin, as these are the ingredients that would have been readily available at the time. There are also many claims that the Cosmo was adapted from the Kamikaze cocktail, though is often presented very differently. The Cosmopolitan was popularised significantly among young women in the 1990s because of its frequent appearances on the TV program ‘Sex and the City’, where Sarah Jessica Parker’s character, Carrie Bradshaw, often ordered the drink when out with her girlfriends. Ingredients: 50ml vodka; 25ml triple sec; 50ml cranberry juice; 25ml fresh lime juice; orange peel and/or mint to serve; ice. Method: 1 Add ice, vodka, triple sec, cranberry juice and lime juice to a cocktail shaker and shake for about 30 seconds. 2 Strain into a martini glass and garnish with a sprig of mint and/or a twist of orange peel.

PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY Why not have a Mocktail? For a non–alcoholic alternative, use 50ml cranberry juice, 25ml lime juice, 25ml orange juice and 25ml simple syrup (sugar and water, boiled then cooled).

Leader’s Life with Councillor Paul James

‘Film Friendly City’ At the time of writing this article, Gloucester Docks is starting to come alive in preparation for the filming of scenes for a major American “motion picture”. We’re sworn to secrecy about exactly what it is, but there has been a good deal of speculation in the local media and, by the time you read this, you’ll know whether or not that speculation was correct! Gloucester has been successful in recent years in getting production companies to use the city as a film base. In fact, we’ve gained “Film Friendly City” status from Creative England. I remember as a youngster the excitement when The Onedin Line was filmed in the Docks. I also remember people telling me that it would never be used as a film location again when the area was redeveloped. How wrong they were!

A huge tourist boost The most notable filming in recent years has been Harry Potter in the Cloisters of Gloucester Cathedral. Warner Bros brought a huge crew and supporting “village” with them for quite a few days to film what would only be a few minutes in the final cut. Nevertheless, it’s been a huge tourist boost for the Cathedral – perhaps now ranking as what it is most famous for, despite having a king crowned there and a king buried there! Over the last few years, the Docks has played host to the filming of The Colour of Magic (with Sir David Jason) and Amazing Grace (with Ioan Gruffudd and Albert Finney). The Cathedral has been the backdrop for Doctor Who (David Tennant at the time) and Henry IV & V (with Geoffrey Palmer and Tom Hiddleston). Perhaps the piece of filming I remember best was Sean Bean and Danny Dyer rocking a white van in the Land Registry car park for “Outlaw The Movie” in 2006. Being a film location brings direct economic benefits through the numbers of people coming to the city involved in filming and indirectly by putting Gloucester on the map. So it’s very much worth the time and effort the council puts in to smooth the way with road closures etc. But if you were hoping to catch a glimpse of Johnny Depp, I hope you’re not too disappointed! t: 01452 384051

Onions galore! The Newent Onion Fayre is back on Saturday 13th September and promises to be bigger and better than ever with more food, stalls, entertainment and fun for everyone to enjoy! Gloucestershire’s largest one-day event, which hosts the unique Onion Show, attracts nearly 15,000 visitors each year, making it an important part of Newent’s economy as well as its history. Established over 800 years ago, the Onion Fayre brought people from far and wide to purchase local onions from Newent. Unfortunately, the fayre saw its demise in the early twentieth century due to the first world war, but was revived in 1996 and has become a spectacular showcase of various locally grown fruit and vegetables, alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks, as well as some more exotic foods. Besides being a great venue for local producers to sell their goods, the fayre includes the infamous Onion Eating Competition. Competitors go head-to-head eating raw onions and previous winners have consumed them in as little as one minute and six seconds!

But there are some interesting facts about onions that many people will not have heard. Did you know that in the middle ages, onions were used not only for cooking, but as medicine to relieve headaches, snake bites and even cure hair loss! Today, they are still used to relieve many common illnesses such as coughs, colds and asthma. Another fascinating fact is that in ancient Egypt onions were worshipped and placed in the tombs of Pharaohs as a symbol of eternity. The ancient Greeks also used onions to strengthen athletes before they competed in the Olympic games – they ate lots of onions, drank onion juice and even rubbed them on their bodies! Finally, if you’ve ever prepared onions for cooking, you may have shed a tear or two. The reason for this is that when onions are cut, a sulphur compound is released and the gas reacts with moisture in your eyes to form a mild sulphuric acid. The acid burns your eyes, stimulating them to release tears to wash the irritant away. There are many preventative measures that people have come up with – chewing gum, holding a tea spoon in your mouth or lighting a candle – but one of the most effective methods is wearing goggles, though you may look a little odd!

Short Walks in the Cotswolds Winchcombe & Sudeley Castle 5 miles (8km) ~ 21⁄2 hours Moderate terrain – two climbs, some mud possible

A From Back Lane Car Park walk back to the B4632. Turn left and walk 650yds (600m) to Rushley Lane on the right. 1 The town grew up around the Benedictine Abbey, which was founded in AD798 and became one of the largest landowners in the Cotswolds. The Abbey was dissolved in 1539 and there is now no trace of it above ground. St Peter’s Church has a splendid weathercock and an interesting collection of 40 gargoyles known as the ‘Winchcombe Worthies’. B Turn right into Rushley Lane and, at the bend, continue ahead up Stancombe Lane to a waymarked gate on the left. C Follow the waymarks uphill, passing through two more gates. Continue ahead up a steep waymarked path through woodland. Cross the open land at the top to a gate. D Go through the gate and walk up the left side of the field. At an old wall bear slightly right, cross the stile and continue to the top. Bear left to reach a stone wall. Follow the wall to a stile. Cross the stile and continue down to the next stile. E Cross the stile and continue down to a gate on the right. Go through and continue to the market post, then across the next field to the road. F Turn right for a mile (400m), then turn right along a dirt track to the right of a stone wall. Continue by the wall to a stile in the corner of the field. 2 Salt Way is an ancient route which originated at Droitwich, where the salt was especially pure, and passed through the Cotswolds to London via Lechlade and the Thames. G Cross the stile and continue to the five-bar gate at the bottom. H Follow the track, passing St. Kenelm’s Well, to the buildings. Leave the track to bear slightly right across Page 14

the field to a stile. Head downhill towards the left-hand gate and on to the road. 3 The spring at St Kenelm’s Well is said to mark the final halt of the body of Kenelm before it reached Winchcombe. He became King of Mercia as a young boy in AD819 but is believed to have been murdered at the instigation of his jealous sister. The monks at Winchcombe recovered his body and the legend tells that springs gushed out wherever they laid him. The well became a shrine for pilgrims. wood. Cross the two stiles at the end and head half-left to the road. K Turn right and follow the road through the farm. Turn left along a path opposite the next house down to a gate, then turn right. Turn left at the field boundary to the next gate. L Go through the gate and then over the stile. Head diagonally across the field to the left corner of the castle buildings. 4 Sudeley Castle dates mainly from the 15th century, although it was deliberately ruined by Parliamentary forces after the Civil War and even became an inn before restoration between 1837 and 1936. The castle is famous for being home to Katherine Parr, the sixth wife of Henry VIII. She married Sudeley’s owner, Lord Admiral Seymour, after the death of the King in 1547 and lived at the castle until her death in 1548. Surrounding the castle are beautiful gardens, which were restored and redesigned by Emma Dent in the 19th century and Lady Ashcombe in the 20th century. M Continue by the fence to a gate on the right. WIth the play area on the left, walk ahead to a gate by the road. N Cross the road to the gate ahead. Continue across the field to a gate at the far end and on to the road. Turn left into the town. The Local Answer

courtesy of the Everyman Theatre It’s the 18th century. Kate Hardcastle is a young lady fixed up to meet the eligible Marlow with a view to marriage. Marlow is a young gent who is tongue-tied with the upper classes and downright lecherous with commoners. So when Marlow is tricked into believing Kate’s ancestral home is a country inn, and mistakes Kate for a lowly barmaid what could possibly go wrong? Plenty. Set against the increasingly chaotic proceedings of one very long night, ‘She Stoops to Conquer’ is a delightful romantic romp filled with ludicrous misunderstanding, mischief and mayhem. The latest in a string of comedy hits from Director Conrad Nelson (A Government Inspector, The Grand Gesture), this version is more West Riding than West Country. Northern Broadsides’ talented cast of actor-musicians bring their unique charisma, theatrical magic and innate sense of fun to this flamboyant period comedy. How To ... with Tom Orpin

... budget for your first year at university

Shipton Golf Course “A 9 hole pay & play course in the Heart of the Cotswolds” No need to book – Open every day from 7am until dusk

Family run course offering affordable golf for all Coffee shop and terrace ● Small stock of ‘everyday’ golfing equipment and clothing ● PGA Fellow Professional PGA Approved Establishment available for lessons and advice

Clearing has closed, all allocated University spaces have been filled and for the lucky ones amongst you preparing to take a big leap into a different life, the time has come to start thinking about budgeting. Now, that might sound incessantly dull but the simple truth is, running a succinct and maintained budget will improve every other aspect of your student life. Not only that, it could help to prepare you for the big bad world on the other side. Managing a budget is crucial in all walks of life no matter your age, background or to what extent your budget stretches. Therefore, starting off on the budget road in your first year of Uni is one of the most important things you can do – and setting one up is remarkably simple. All you need to create a well-balanced and easily digestible money timetable is a spreadsheet on Microsoft Excel. Make a plan as to how much you would, ideally, like to spend within a week. Be sure to exclude things such as rent and bills, so you have a clear idea as to how much you’ve got to play with in the first place. Then, just designate certain amounts for certain things – have headings such as “food bills”, “phone contract” and “gym membership” and take it from there. Try to keep receipts until you’ve tallied them onto your spreadsheet, so that you know exactly how much you’ve spent on a weekly basis. A couple of months into Uni, you can then look and if, for example, you’ve spent more than you originally estimated on food, you can cut your cloth accordingly by maybe shopping in the cheaper aisles of supermarkets for a few weeks. Now, it’s no great secret that the first year of Uni can involve a large deal of alcoholic delight, so be sure to adapt your budget depending on your situation. Even if you’re not a big drinker, you’ll still want to enjoy yourself and take part in activities, which can become expensive.

In order to do this, make sure you have an emergency fund. For example, during Fresher’s week you might want to designate more money to spend on alcohol and socialising than you normally would, so use your emergency fund on that. Then, when it comes round to May and you’re inevitably locked in your room for hours on end staring at blank Word Documents, you could use the topped-up emergency fund on things like emergency takeaways – The Dominos Delivery Man tends to become a more regular sight around town when the exam heat is turned up. An emergency fund will always protect you from those unexpected expenses, so keep it separate from the rest of your funds. But most importantly enjoy the marvellous riches of being a student, and remember – Microsoft Excel is your friend! twitter.com/tomorpin

A professional and friendly service to complete your dream kitchen

Hatherley Worktops has been in the kitchen and work surface industry for 21 years and specialises in the supply, fabricaton and installation of laminate, wood, composite, quartz stone, granite and corian surfaces. Having started as an apprentice at 17 years of age, proprietor Lee Willmore later specialised in worktop fabrication and installation, and is extremely proud of how the business has grown and developed to what it is today. He says: “We have an excellent in-house team to ensure the smooth installation of your kitchen and worktops. We offer a complete service to the customer, taking care of kitchen design, gas works, electrical works, tiling, flooring, fabrication and installation. “Having said that, we also have a dedicated team to concentrate on worktop replacements and kitchen upgrades to give your kitchen a new lease of life.” The company has gradually expanded and is now pleased to offer its customers a ‘one stop shop’, taking care of your kitchen from start to finish. All eight members of the team (pictured above) are passionate, friendly and very willing to help, offering suggestions and assistance to ensure that you get exactly what you want. They will help plan your kitchen, making sure everything is readily accessible and in the best possible location to serve your needs. Lee continued: “We are a local, family-run business and we would like to take this opportunity to thank our customers for their continued support over the years.”

Better idea of how your kitchen will look All the granite and quartz is fabricated by the team at Hatherley Worktops, and they have a wide range of large slabs in stock so customers can better visualise how a large section of the stone would look in their home, as opposed to trying to imagine how their kitchen would appear from a small sample. By fabricating their own surfaces, Hatherley Worktops significantly reduce the time taken from template to installation to around 7 days, improving the service for customers.

Already bought your kitchen? Then why not get the surfaces from Hatherley Worktops? They have a wide range in many different styles and colours, so send them your kitchen plan and get a direct quote for worktops.

New kitchen showroom Hatherley Worktops are pleased to announce the opening of their new kitchen showroom where customers can view full kitchen ranges along with a wide selection of worktop surfaces, sinks and taps.

Trade accounts available The company also provides a ‘trade account’ service for builders, kitchen fitters, carpenters, architects, etc. The Hatherley Worktops team are extremely professional and friendly – call Lee for a free, no obligation quote!

The Local Answer

To start with, I’m sure lots of you have noticed areas of ‘Urban Meadows’ that Cheltenham Borough Council have been planting. I chatted with Janice Peacey, Community Ranger for CBC, who told me how popular these plantings have been – in excess of 80 emails and nearly 40 phone calls logged in favour of the meadows! Some of the mixes used were the ‘Old Comrade Mix’ with poppies to commemorate the start of the Great War, and a more traditional cornfield mix used in Pitville Park, which is even now just coming into flower. Janice invited readers to visit the Cheltenham Parks’ facebook page and upload pictures of themselves or their pets enjoying the meadows. Now, this is something we could all copy at home. Unlike wildflower meadows, which are quite difficult to establish as they need very poor soil, or the grasses take over, any sunny patch of earth could do. There are many different companies doing the seeds – for example, Pictorial Meadows do a nice annual seed mix, which is easy to sow.

Wait for the explosion of colour Clear weeds off in the autumn or early spring and prepare soil to a depth of about 20cm, leaving a fine tilth on the surface. Scatter your seeds at the rate suggested on the packet in spring, water in dry spells and wait for the explosion of colour. Now the tips for September. If the weather allows, you can get on with lifting and dividing any perennials that have got too congested, and stopped flowering as well as they have been – this can be done in spring but by then things can get very busy so it is one less job to do. Lift the large clumps and, with a pair of garden forks back to back, prise them apart into smaller pieces. Discard the woody, congested centre of clumps, replanting pieces which look healthy and have a good root system, as well as new shoots, into compost enriched soil with some bone meal added. These will give a good show the following summer. This can be done up till Christmas depending on the weather. Leave grasses, silvery foliage plants and late-flowering plants until spring to sort out. Cut asparagus ferns to the ground and get rid of them, as they may be harbouring the eggs of the asparagus beetle, Crioceris asparagi. Apply a balanced feed such as blood, fish and bone meal over the soil surface to help ensure a good crop next year.

‘Business opportunity that keeps on giving’ Since 1997, Telecom Plus, which operates the Utility Warehouse Discount Club, has grown from just an idea into a company with a £600 million+ turnover – a track record second to none! This phenomenal growth has been achieved by word of mouth “referral marketing”, and the company has received numerous accolades and rewards for outstanding services and value for money. Jason and Shelley Hyde were customers of Utility Warehouse (UW) for four years before becoming Distributors. Jason explains why they joined forces with their supplier: “ We were so impressed with the service, we began to recommend UW to family and friends. This was when our personal UW contact asked if we would like to look at the business model. Because it was extremely flexible and part time – you can choose the number of hours and when you want to work – we thought we’d give it a go. I was doing 6070 hour weeks in the building trade, so time was limited. Now we have built up a very nice residual income, paid into our account every month – whether we work or not.

Exciting incentives As well as receiving an income, generating discounts on your utility bills or raising funds for a good cause, there’s an exciting range of incentives which include owning your own BMW Mini; driving one of the company’s Porsche Boxsters; qualifying for luxury, all expenses paid holidays; earning vouchers to spend in M&S or John Lewis, plus significant cash bonuses for achieving targets. In five years of being Distributors, as well as the income, we’ve got the free UW mini, we get the Porsche in October, and the three allinclusive holidays we’ve been on (Las Vegas, Paris and the Mediterranean Cruise on the Crystal Serenity) have been truly stunning. This opportunity just frees up your life, giving

Jason receives the keys to his new Mini

you choices, and many friends are following us with this business model. That’s the beauty of this business – as long as you’re over 18, you can do this. We have builders, postmen, single mums, accountants, solicitors, IT consultants, printers, police officers and members of the armed forces – all achieving their goals in our team. You just need to tell people what you do, and how you can help them either save or make money, or both. I’m now a company mentor and enjoy helping new Distributors to achieve their goals – whether to earn a few hundred pounds extra each month or become financially free. I find myself regularly asking prospective Distributors ‘how many people do you know who use the phone, switch on a light, turn on the oven or use the internet?’ The UW doesn’t ask people to spend extra money on services they don’t use, they simply offer far better value on services already used! You could tap into a market where people and businesses are already spending many billions of £s every year. Every time your customers use their phone, switch on a light, turn on the heating or surf the net – you could be getting paid. The UW offers a unique support and training programme, which includes a comprehensive package of manuals and marketing materials – providing everything you need to start building your own successful business. Initial training for new Distributors is provided free of charge at over 45 training

centres throughout the country and the great thing is, you can go as many times as you want – free of charge. There are around nine types of training days, which become available as you grow your business. We also hold career opportunity presentations to explain how the business model works. ” Contact Jason or Shelley (details below) if you would like more information about The Utility Warehouse, or to book your place at the next Career Opportunity Presentation 8pm Tuesday 9th September at The Regency Hotel, Cheltenham.

Albany Windows is a local family business. First and foremost we are installers, which is important because installation is the difficult bit and we are small enough to maintain close control over every job. But we are big enough to obtain supplies directly from large, high quality manufacturers of PVCu and aluminium windows, doors and conservatories.

WINDOW AND DOOR SYSTEMS

Whatever your requirements, we have glazing options for every need and budget, from a single window to a large conservatory. We supply some of Gloucestershire’s leading builders of quality homes with their glazing, but we also carry out double glazing and conservatory repairs and replace misted sealed units.

Registration No: 12011

We have all the accreditations you could wish for and of course offer a ten year insurance backed guarantee. And, with no long sales pitch or pressure to buy, we make the entire process hassle free from start to finish.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames – has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service: “Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just

The Local Answer

about saving people money, although that obviously helps. “Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.”

Cloudy2Clear service Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds, and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. “The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount

of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.” So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Spread the word “Where do you get new clients from?” It’s a question that often crops up in business and social discussions. My answer is always that existing clients are the best source of new ones and that, consequently, our most effective method of advertising is to ensure we do a good job. But the question always makes me ask myself whether we are doing enough to spread the word about what we have to offer, and even that we exist in the first place. My answer here is always the same too – we are a small firm with a limited amount to spend on marketing and therefore any expenditure has to be focused.

Brainwashing the public Those with deeper pockets take a different approach. You only have to open the door to your wardrobe or your kitchen cupboard to see the number of branded products on show. Ask anyone whose slogan is ‘Every little helps’ or ‘Just Do It’, and you will get a high number of correct responses. So, brainwashing the public by constant advertising, particularly on television, does work for those who can afford to throw the money at it. HMRC could help the smaller firms, but chooses not to. A major company launching a new product or a nameawareness campaign gets tax relief on its expenditure, taking 20% or more off the cost of the exercise. If I take someone to lunch to encourage the one-on-one approach on which my business development is based, I get no tax relief and cannot recover the VAT. If Messrs Cameron and Osborne are serious about helping small businesses, they might look at this situation. In the meantime, I’ll keep spreading the word by doing as good a job as I can – and writing articles for The Local Answer of course!

Turning trouble to talent Firstly, may I introduce myself – I am Acting Sergeant Matt Bishop from Barton Street police station. I am usually one of the two beat officers that cover Tredworth, however due to Sergeant Tim Wood being promoted to Temporary Inspector, I find myself filling the gap until a suitable successor is identified. So, here’s a snippet of what’s been going on in and around Gloucester recently. Complaints of criminal damage relating to graffiti within the city have been brought to our attention. Luckily, however, these complaints have been quickly dealt with due to contact with Marketing Gloucester.

Brightening up the city The team at Marketing Gloucester have been working with a number of local talented street artists, who have been brightening up the city at a number of designated sites, adding their own street art for us all to enjoy. Working in partnership with Trading Standards, a warrant was executed recently involving a raid on a local business and seizure of counterfeit cigarettes – this was a result of good community intelligence. A scrap metal operation targeting scrap metal collectors was also successful thanks to the work of partner agencies – numerous tickets were issued for offences, as well as people being reported for offences relating to this activity. To conclude, a reminder when parking on the side roads off Barton Street. Please park considerately and within the designated lines on the pavements so not to cause a total obstruction, which could result in a parking ticket being issued to your vehicle. May I thank you for taking the time to read this. All being well, the next edition will be written by Tim’s successor.
