Spring is finally here and now is the time to get out in the countryside and enjoy the beautiful plants bursting into life. Steve Hawley talks us through identifying Wild Garlic in ‘Wild Food Foraging’, while Julia Smith’s ‘In the Garden’ article explains how we can enjoy the beautiful nodding heads of bluebells in our own gardens. Woodland and garden birds also become more vocal at this time of year, and Jenny Stevens shares how you can identify their individual calls and voices in ‘Wildlife Matters’. If your New Year ’s Resolutions haven’t quite gone according to plan, you may be looking to re-start your health and fitness regime now that spring has arrived. Matt Wagstaff gives his advice on how to shop better to support your health in ‘Looking Good, Feeling Great’. The Bird and Deer Park at Prinknash is hosting its annual Mad Hatter ’s Tea Party Event this month, with face painters, refreshments and lots of excting activities for little ones! Our What’s On section is packed full of Easter activities and other events for the whole family to enjoy, so get out and about this April and enjoy all that spring has to offer!

W Whiskey hiskey SSour our The Whiskey Sour was first recorded in Jerry Thomas’ 1862 book ‘The Bartender’s Guide’, albeit being known for over a century prior. Back then, travel took forever, refrigeration was lacking and the concept of germs was unheard of. Sea travel was difficult – food and water would spoil over time, and water wasn’t considered safe due to the germs. Sailors suffered from scurvy, malnutrition and sea-sickness until an English bartender named Vice Admiral Edward Vernon mixed a few ingredients together to serve his crew. Within their rations sailors had lemons and limes to prevent scurvy and liquor for something to drink . The liquor, watered down with lemon juice, brought about an early version of the Sour. When brought to shore, this concept became popular and developed to the sour cocktail we now know. Egg white was added at a later stage as a creamy, frothy element to help the cocktail go down smoother and make it look better. This is sometimes called a Boston Sour. IIngredients: ngredients: 60ml bourbon; 30ml lemon juice; 15ml simple syrup; egg white (optional); ice; maraschino cherry and orange slice to garnish. M ethod: Method: 1 Pour ingredients into a shaker with ice. Shake well then pour into a rocks glass over ice. 2 Garnish with a maraschino cherry and a slice of orange. 3 If using the egg white, dry shake (no ice) vigorously in a shaker to get it white and foamy. Then add ice and the other ingredients.

CCTT SScans cans – aadvanced dvanced iimaging maging ffor or p pets ets There’s a vet joke that tells the story of a disbelieving pet owner who wants a 2nd opinion when he doesn’t believe what his vet is telling him. The vet retrieves the clinic cat, places it next to the owner’s pet and tells the owner the cat has confirmed the diagnosis. The owner is then presented with a large bill for a consultation and a CAT scan.
D Detailed etailed iimaging maging o off iinternal nternal sstructures tructures A real CAT or CT scan is essentially a rotating x-ray machine that builds a 3D image of a patient using very clever computer software. CT stands for ‘Computered Tomography ’ and allows incredibly detailed imaging of internal structures. Although traditionally we tend to think of xrays as being mostly useful for looking at bones, with the clever use of contrast agents CT scans not only produce 3 D i m a g e s o f s k e l e t a l s t r u c t u r e s b u t c a n a l s o p r ov i d e details of the vascular system (arteries, heart , etc.) and softer tissues, and are often the best tool for highlighting i n te r n a l t u m o u r s a n d g r ow t h s . T h ey c a n b e i n c r e d i b l y u s ef u l w h e n p l a n n i n g surgical procedures, as CT scans make it possible to u s e 3 D p r i n t i n g to recreate a fracture or structural problem so surgery can be planned in advance. Special surgical repair plates can even be d e s i g n e d to t h e s p e c i f i c n e e d of a n i n d i v i d u a l patient. In contrast, a traditional x-ray takes a 2D snapshot o f a b o n e o r a n a to m i c a l area and, because of overlying structures, it can sometimes be hard to determine the extent of an abnormality or even highlight it effectively. Digital radiography made the process of taking, processing and storing images much easier than conventional radiography, but CT imaging advances the diagnostic capabilities of what we can do for our pets to a whole new level.
The Charlton Kings Vet Centre is fully equipped with a sterile operating theatre, digital radiography,, ultrasonography and laboratory equipment. Drop in and have a look around. You will see many of the same friendly faces from our main surgery at Dragon Vet Centre. You can book your vis and pick up food, medications or pet supplies at either surgery if it’s more convenient.

Shop Shop better better ttoo support support your your hhealth ealth Food shopping is often thought of as the monotonous job at the start of the week – the same dull routine of trawling the aisles not quite knowing what to go for this week . This often leads to over spending on food that doesn’t quite fit the healthy diet you want to follow, or products that end up lingering at the back of the fridge until the rot sets in! Breaking down this routine can be the first step in creating healthier d i e t a r y h a b i t s, s to p p i n g t h e temptation to buy and consume unhealthy products that don’t do anything for your health and fitness goals. B Blazers lazers Blazers are back . Not necessarily the old, traditional style double-breasted blazer look , although there are some m o r e f i t te d v e r s i o n s o f t h a t s t y l e knocking about. Trendy blazers come in a variety of shapes and bold colours t h i s s p r i n g – s o m e a re ev e n m a d e with the popular cold shoulder look . Evening glitter blazers make a bold statement , and others can be easily dressed up or down for the office with a nice shirt or for more casual wear on the weekends.
TTrouser rouser suits suits Trouser suits, just like the traditional blazer, are back but here they are far more relaxed in the way they fit – many look more like comfortable sportswear. Patterns and bold colours are once again popular,, especially tropical and animal prints. They can, of course, be worn as separates depending on the design and pattern, so not a bad item to invest in.
Wrap Wrap dresses dresses Always a favourite, wrap dresses are comfortable, stylish and easy to wear. Just like the little black dress, a good wrap dress is an investment piece and is guaranteed to give you a good s h a p e. They’re tricky to wear with tights or stockings as you tend to slip in them, so sometimes it takes a while to get used to them. I suggest wearing them a ro u n d t h e h o u s e to g e t t h e f e e l o f them first. One word of caution – just like flip flops, they are hazardous to drive in. I often scratch the soles of my shoes before I wear them out to avoid slipping. If mules are not for you, you’ll find Chanel style two-toned court shoes everywhere, often in the famous beige and black . These are certainly a c l a ss y l o o k t h a t s t a n d s t h e test of time.

Use a good quality gentle polish to remove any fine scratches from the panels and use a wax to give the perfect finish. There are two types of waxes – a traditional wax, which can be clear or come in a variety of colours, or you can use a synthetic sealant wax . The difference; normal wax is based on natural products, will last a few weeks and burns off easier in the sun, whereas a synthetic sealant will last for a few months and will not burn off so quickly, it’s slightly harder to apply and will feel a bit sticky. Both of these waxes offer a sacrificial layer that p ro te c t s t h e f i n i s h y o u h av e s p e n t ages gaining with the wash and p o l i s h , a n d a l s o f i l l s i n a ny f i n e scratches. “We are not worthy to live in a Society taaking everything and giiving nothing.” Lilian M Faithfull, 1907 We have been caring for the elderly since 1946 and true to our Founder, Lilian Faithfull, we continue to follow the ethos of the Charity – to help and care fo or our residents and families. We are different. We are a Registered Charity and that means we provide not just care fo or the elderly, we provide ‘Lilian Faithfull Care’.
What does ‘Lilian Faithfull Care’ mean? It means taking pride in looking after those who have already given so much. We never forget that the senior members of our society worked so hard to create our modern life and ways. It means dignity. Showing respect and adopting a person centred approach to every single resident that lives with us. It means having plenty of fully trained staff on duty. Providing support and putting up the wages of those carrying out one of the most important jobs in society.
It means providing food that is not only nutritional, but also of excellent quality and food that we would want to eat ourselves. It means putting care before profit. As a charity we own our homes and are able to run them diffeerently to commercial operators. It means being governed by Trustees not shareholders. It means providing a safe, stable and secure home, a home for life.
Lilian Faithfull – in care for the right reasons, not for profit.

W Waltz altz iinto nto V Vienna ienna Vienna is a classic weekend or week’s destination that is also a great day out if you’re holidaying elsewhere in Austria or even down the Danube in Slovakia… Its 09:00. You’ve caught one of the city’s ‘Park and Rides’ into the centre (don’t even think about trying to park in central Vienna), disembarked from t h e h yd r o fo i l o r a r r i ve d a t W i e n Hauptbahnhof. Here are some suggestions for a day in Waltz City.. Start with coffee and Sachertorte. The famous venues are Hotel Sacher Wien or Demel, but they can be a bit ‘touristy’. Instead, try Konditerai Heiner on Wollzeite near the cathedral, or Café Votiv. Then buy some delicious Mozartkugeln (‘Balls’) for later…

By the way, the Third Man M u s e u m o n P r e ss g a s s e 2 5 i s a l s o worth visiting. If heights aren’t your thing, the popular Zeiss Planetarium is nearby.
Other great family entertainments near central Vienna include the Haus des Meeres (Aqua Terra Zoo), the food and vintage stalls of the Naschmarkt, and the Schönbrunn Palace – a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. All this exploring is sure to build your appetite, and Vienna has a great range of places to eat at every price. The city can be pricy, and there are tourist traps, but be reassured that at the time of writing, TripAdvisor’s top rated restaurant was the ‘one -€’ Schactelwirt on Jugendgasse 5. As we always say, TripAdvisor is your friend and rarely disappoints.
History History o orr ccafé afé ssociety? ociety? Vienna shouldn’t disappoint either. Whether you overdose on history, see the famous dancing Lippizaner horses (book very early!) or join café society in the footsteps of famous Viennese such as Johan Strauss and Sigmund Freud, we’re sure you’ll have a (‘Mozart’) ball! As you board your train, return to your car or catch the hydrofoil back to Bratislava, we’re sure you’ll already be planning a longer visit – we did!

Allotments Allotments The Parish Council offers tenancies on 245 allotments that in total cover an area bigger than four Wembley pitches! Managing an allotment is a year-round pleasure and now is the time to prepare the ground and sow your vegetables and flowers for this season. We still have a few opportunities to take on an allotment this year, especially at our Ryeworth and Haver sites, so if you have often thought what a great idea it would be, contact the office today. In three months’ time you could be the ‘Best New Tenant’ of 2017 on your site, in our annual allotments competition. This is judged in July by an independent panel of gardening experts and winners enjoy a great awards evening in the Stanton Hall in September. The cost of a Charlton Kings allotment is very reasonable and an ‘average’ plot of 100m² would cost you just £35, including the water charge. We are also planning this year to develop some ‘Easy Access’ raised bed plots on a paved surface at Sappercombe, for people who need to garden at waistlevel or for those of us who can get down to plant and weed, but can’t get up again! If you might be interested, we would be really grateful to hear from you.

Wild Wild g garlic arlic I’m a very furry individual, I have been known to fatten up ahead of winter, and my mood in the mornings has often been described as grizzly. It’s probably no surprise then that whenever I catch a waft of Allium Ursinum while walking through woodland, I can’t help but spend a moment trying to track it down. Often referred to as Wild Garlic or Bear’s Garlic, due to the brown bear ’s appetite for this plant , it has been used throughout history as an ingredient in the kitchen and it’s easy to get creative with. I’m no chef, but I’m planning to experiment a little and see if I can use the leaves to make a Wild Garlic version of the Greek dish, stuffed vine leaves.
Flowers Flowers o off Wild Wild Garlic Garlic look look like like a ssparkler parkler o on nb bonfire onfire n night ight But be ever so careful when identifying this plant, as its appearance when young is very similar to the poisonous plant Lilly of the Valley which, if imbibed, can leave you in a very sorry state! The best way to identify Wild Garlic is to find mature plants, which start to have noticeable differences between its poisonous lookalike. Primarily, the flowers of Wild Garlic look like a sparkler on bonfire night , whereas Lily of the Valley has bell shaped flowers. Another good way to check if it’s the right plant is to crush the leaves with your fingers and smell for that garlic aroma. But make sure that the lingering smell of a previously correctly identified plant isn’t masking the lack of odour on subsequent identifications. My advice is to find the correct plant and harvest only from that source to reduce the risk of an accidental poisoning. But please please don’t pick any of the plant if you’re not 100% sure you’ve correctly identified it. April is a b u sy o l d m o n t h , b u t s o m u c h depends on the weather. The garden centre is full of small p l u g p l a n t s i n a l l s o r t s of e n t i c i n g colours, and buying bedding plants as plugs is a very good way to do it. Don’t just plant them straight out in the garden, as t h ey a re u s e d to a f r o s t f re e environment in the nursery and will need to be kept in a cold greenhouse or conservatory for another 3 or so weeks to acclimatise. This will also ensure they won’t be zapped by the frost, which still can come in April.

The narrow leaves keep their colour throughout the season, although it loses its leaves in winter, and often when the plant is grown in full sun it develops a reddish tinge. However, I prefer it grown in shade to keep the yellowy-green colour. A wood full of the beautiful nodding heads and scent of bluebells i s a q u i n te s s e n t i a l l y E n g l i s h experience and they will be coming
out this month. Unfortunately, they are under threat from the Spanish bluebell, which is grown in gardens as it was considered more decorative than its English cousin. How to tell them apart? Well, the English bluebell (Hyacinthoides non-scripta) has scented flowers borne on one side of the stem, the anthers are creamcoloured and unequal and the flower spike is nodding.

Instead, source English bluebells from reputable retailers and you too could enjoy the fragrance of your own little bluebell patch.

E Easy asy a access ccess w walk-in alk-in bath ba t h
With time, you may ďŹ nd your bathroom becomes more diďŹƒcult to use safely. Several recent clients have wanted to retain a bath in their property, but they could no longer climb in and out of a standard bath, so the walk-in bath shown above has proved to be an ideal solution for them. This bath has the lowest door entry point available amongst walk-in baths.
It also has a centrally positioned door, which makes the bath more practical to ďŹ t in a tight space. The bath acts as a large shower tray if you prefer to shower. Alternatively, it could still be used in a conventional manner by visitors or other family members. Simply add some grab rails strategically pla on the wall fo extra safety.

Vehicle Vehicle security security Over the past month, we have been receiving a large number of reports from members of the public who have had their vehicles entered and items stolen. It would appear in a large number of cases that the vehicles involved had been left insecure. In the interests of keeping your vehicle and property safe, I would like to offer the following advice: • Please ensure your car is locked by checking the door handle, making sure the indicators flash and listening for the clunk of the locks when you press the button. • If you have a keyless or proximity entry system for your vehicle, please ensure you store the fob out-of-range of the vehicle within your house. This may vary depending on where you park the car, particularly if you don’t have offstreet parking. • If your vehicle locks or diagnostics can be accessed using a mobile phone application, please ensure that you use a pin or password to lock the phone. • Keep car keys out of sight at home in a cupboard or drawer, and not within easy reach of your front door. • Consider fitting a lock or similar OBD protector to the d i a g n o s t i c p o r t i n yo u r ve h i c l e. T h e s e c a n b e p u r c h a s e d online or in car stores. • Remove valuables from your vehicle overnight – don’t leave anything of value on display within your vehicle. This particularly applies to tradespeople who use their vehicles to transport tools and materials. If it is not practical to remove items, please consider fitting a secondary lock to the vehicle. • Consider using a steering wheel lock and storing the key separately from your car keys. Even modern vehicles can still be stolen when the thief has the key! On a more positive note, the neighbourhood crime team in C h e l t e n h a m h av e b e e n i n v e s t i g a t i n g t h e m a t t e r a n d w e have arrested and charged an individual with theft and being equipped to steal in relation to crimes in both Cheltenham and Tewkesbury.

Money Money M Matters atters with with Roger Roger D Downes ownes o of fA Andorran ndorran
Not Not m much uch ooff a bbudget? udget? The new Chancellor, Phillip Hammond, delivered his first, and the nation’s last, Spring Budget last month. For those hoping for giveaways, there were none of significance; on the other hand, those worried about measures that might cost you money needn’t have fretted. It really wasn’t much of a Budget. There were, however, a couple of interesting sub-plots. It’s really difficult at present for the Chancellor to plan for the next few years. He knows he needs to address the country ’s deficit – estimated at a staggering £130,000 per household – but he has no idea what the financial impact of triggering Article 50 and the UK subsequently leaving the EU will be. How can he? He has no idea as to what the terms of our exit will be as there have been no serious negotiations.
The The biggest biggest cchange hange tto oo our ur ttaxation axation system system iin nag generation eneration As with every Chancellor in recent times, Mr Hammond announced a series of consultations over the summer on a variety of fiscal matters. He will have time to digest the results before he presents his first Autumn Budget in November this year. I suspect we will see a lot more measures introduced at that time. But it’s perhaps a couple of the consultations that are already in motion on which the greater focus will be in the coming months. Labelled ‘the death of the tax return’ by former Chancellor, George Osborne, a couple of years ago, the introduction of ‘Making Tax Digital’ in April 2018 is set to be the biggest change to our taxation system in a generation – certainly since the introduction of selfassessment in 1997. There will be a lot more to bring you on this subject in the coming months. Most people in my profession, including me, are concerned that it is being rushed through by the Treasury, b u t , i n t h e m a i n , M r H a m m o n d i s n o t b a c k i n g d ow n . Watch this space.
N Narrowing arrowing tthe he g gap ap iin n ttax ax b breaks reaks The second ongoing consultation is into the alleged disparities between taxation of the employed and selfemployed. Currently self-employed people, including those who operate through their own limited companies, enjoy greater tax breaks than employed people. The government seems intent on narrowing that gap, with the Chancellor announcing (and subsequently changing his mind on) increased national insurance for the selfemployed and an increase in tax on dividends for those operating through a private limited company. However, he seems to have overlooked completely the risks taken by the self-employed, with the measures that he announced flying in the face of the government ’s intention to fuel the entrepreneurial spirit. It may not have been much of a Budget , but there’s plenty going on in the tax world! The Local Answer
