Henry, our Mediterranean spur-thighed tortoise, has called it a year! He has tucked himself in and settled down to a long slumber that should last until the daffodils are up. It is a state I sometimes feel envious of, especially as I struggle out of bed during the dark and cold English winter. Brumation (hibernation i n re p t i l e s ) i s a n a d a p t i v e m e c h a n i s m d e s i g n e d t o s u r v i v e periods of limited resources. Unlike mammals, reptiles don’t live off fat stores during these periods of sleepfulness – they slow their metabolism so that they hardly use any energy. Brumation is triggered by the dropping temperature, reduced sunlight and daylight hours. The process comprises several weeks of gradual winding down, reducing food intake, evacuating gut contents and eventually settling into a cosy spot to s e e o u t t h e w i n te r m o n t h s . I t i s i m p o r t a n t r e p t i l e s f u l l y empty their digestive system, as food left sitting in the stomach would putrefy, rot and be a cause of toxicity to the tortoise. Tortoises should always be in good health prior to hibernation. A tortoise that has been unwell during the year may be better to see out winter in the comfort of a vivarium (indoor temperature controlled area). The location of the hibernation doesn’t need to be an expensive set-up but some t h o u g h t s h o u l d g o i n t o i t . I t n e e d s t o b e a m o n i to r e d , we l l protected enclosure kept at a reasonably controlled temperature. Typically two containers are used – a smaller one inside a larger container, both filled with bedding, straw, newspaper or soil. The tortoise is placed into the inner container so that it is never too near the edge of the outer container, which may get too cold.

Some Some p people eople kkeep eep ttheir heir ttortoises ortoises iin n a ffridge ridge Air must be able to pass through to allow ventilation and a thermometer should be used to monitor the temperature – ideally 3-7°C . Some people use a fridge to keep their tortoises in, which is a perfectly reasonable location as long as you remember to let fresh air in regularly and don’t scare your dinner guests with threats of reptilian cuisine. Tortoises can be quite vulnerable when they are hibernating so if you are using an outdoor shed or building, a rodent-free location is vital. Tortoises should be weighed regularly during hibernation. 1% weight loss per month is considered a maximum amount that should be allowed before waking and feeding should commence. Otherwise, tortoises will sleep for 3-4 months and wake as the weather starts to warm. They should be encouraged to drink daily as soon as they are roused and up to temperature and should be eating within a week of being awake. If you are worried about hibernating your tortoise because they are too young, too small or have been unwell, chat to a vet who deals with exotic pets – not all vets will have the knowledge to deal with reptiles. Likewise, if your tortoise is slow to recover and eat after hibernation, get them checked to make sure they don’t have any health issues – respiratory disease, mouth rot and dehydration are common. Meanwhile, Henry will miss out on Christmas, New Year’s Eve and ‘The Ashes’ cricket series. If Australia don’t beat England, I will be wishing I had joined him in the shed this winter.

The ‘Newmarket Dry Wax ’ jacket by Hicks and Brown (see insert) is a must-have for your wardrobe update this December, so pick your perfect puffa and zip up!

A print that’s been on-trend pretty much every season and will continue to be reinvented and recycled for years to come. Pioneered by Kate Moss, fashion’s obsession with the big cat love shows no signs of fading. It might be predictable, but it’s easily the most timeless motif trend you can buy into. Purchasing a leopard print piece really is an investment. Yes, really. Thanks to its neutral tones, which go with e ve r y t h i n g , t h i s p r i n t te n d s to compliment fellow staples. SStress tress lless ess tthis his CChristmas hristmas and and new next ccreate reate a n ew yyou ou n ext yyear! ear! The festive season is just one time of the year where stress tends to build up. Organising a family get together, thinking of gift ideas and the biggest food shop of the year can build up to a stressful burden which, when not dealt with, can lead to irritability, muscle tension and sleepless nights! Nobody needs that around Christmas... Reducing stress is one area within health and fitness which often gets forgotten about, in many cases due to the difficulty of dealing with one’s stress and the sensitivity of the subject. There are ways to deal with this tension that don’t involve necking a bottle of wine or forking out money on a counsellor whenever your stress hormones hit the roof.

G Get et ssocial ocial Communication is a big part of stress management . Developing friendships with people whom you can confide in and talk to regularly reduces the build up of stress and can aid in one’s ability to deal with emotional strain. Laughing is a natural social stress reliever and can help us to relax, even for a short time. When you feel pressure building, f i n d yo u r f u n n y f r i e n d o r h i t u p a comedy night!

D Develop evelop yyour our sleep sleep routine routine Sleep is vital for many reasons, i n c l u d i n g t h e re g u l a t i o n o f o u r a l l i m p o r t a n t h o r m o n e s, a s we l l a s allowing the body to recover from any physical or mental activity it has been put through during the day. Controlling your sleep routine is vital in this, as it will help your body to begin its sleep cycle more efficiently. Try to reduce technology use in the hour before bed, note down all the tasks you have for the next day, consider de-cluttering your bedroom and reduce your caffeine intake in the 5- 6 hours before sleep.

EExercise xercise Although exercise often acutely raises our stress level (in a good way!) it has extremely beneficial longer-term effects on stress and our ability to deal with it . Exercise can help rewire our neural pathways, increasing happy h o r m o n e s a n d re d u c i n g a n x i e t y a n d ev e n d e p re ss i o n . N o o n e p a r t i c u l a r exercise is best at this – it’s a case of finding the exercise that you enjoy and f i n d t h e m o st b e n ef i c i a l . M e d i t at i o n exercises such as yoga and Thai chi help reduce stress through relaxation and controlled movement, so adding a

pre-bed yoga stretch into your routine could be beneficial in regulating stress.

Gifting someone an experience such as a trip to the theatre or weekend away is suggested to create longer lasting positivity and strengthen relationships, leading to a reduction in stress!

TTreat reat yyourself ourself With busy jobs, family life and daily routines, we often forget to treat ourselves and allow rejuvenation and an element of ‘me time’. Giving y o u r s e l f a s e l e c t t i m e ev e r y we e k w h e re y o u c a n re l a x a n d p u t everything else out of your mind for a while is ideal. Hangover H angover SSOS OS It’s a well known fact that the festive period is a time for over indulgence of both food and alcohol. Many people turn up to work bleary eyed, nauseous, in pain, with vague recollections of the previous night at the work Christmas party. We all know that binge drinking is not healthy – our bodies making this clear in the form of a hangover. The biological facts are that after drinking excessive amounts of alcohol, your body is suffering from a Vitamin B deficiency and dehydration. You may also recognise the nausea, s e n s i t i v i t y to s o u n d a n d l i g h t , a n d a headache, which all stem from your body producing a load of stimulants to counteract the amount of depressants you put into your body in the form of alcohol. A sstriker triker w who ho h had ad a an ne eye ye for for goal goal Pete Turnbull has a turn of phrase as neat as the turn of feet he had on football pitches all over Cheltenham and beyond back in the day. The articulate 52-year-old was a prolific goalscorer in years gone by and was good enough to make a handful of appearances fo r Cheltenham Town at the start of the 1990s, when the club were playing one level below the Football League. He admits he was “football mad” as a child and can remember supporting Manchester United from an early age. But while the likes of Beckham, Scholes and Giggs were playing football almost as soon as they could walk , Turnbull was a late starter in the beautiful game. “I went to school at Gloucester Road Primary and there wasn’t a great deal of sport there,” Turnbull recalled. So what did he do? “We’d play our own games in the playground,” he chuckled. “We’d get a stocking and stuff it full of socks to m a ke a s o c k b a l l a n d k i c ke d t h at

about. The trouble was that the sock ball would regularly go over the fence into the River Chelt, that was disastrous. My mum was forever running out of stockings!” Things didn’t get much better for the wannabe young footballer when he graduated to Pate’ss Grammar School. “At that time there wasn’t much football there either,” he said. Outside school Turnbull would kick a ball in the park as often as he could – “I went through shoes and trousers all the time,” he chuckled – but it wasn’t until he was 13 or 14 that he

A few years ago a caricature of footballing great Lionel Messi emerged with two batteries strapped to his back . The batteries were called Xavi and Iniesta. The inference was that Messi wouldn’t have been half the player w e re i t n o t f o r t h e t w o S p a n i s h maestros playing just behind him in Barcelona’s midfield. Debatable, at best, perhaps. Closer to home, it ’s a much more clearcut story for football leagues across the county. While players play, the wannabe Messi’s and Ronaldo’s a re o n l y a b l e to s t r u t t h e i r s t u f f b e c a u s e o f t h e u n s u n g h e ro e s w h o work tirelessly night and day to make sure that there is a league for them to play in week in and week out. “Yes, a lot of hard work does go on behind the scenes,” said Nigel Newport-Black , chairman of the Cheltenham Youth Football League.

If the growing sport of CrossFit ever needed a chief publicity officer, they could do a lot worse than turn to James Stickland. That ’s because Stickland, as you’d expect from someone who works in the world of medical sales, is a pretty a r t i c u l a te b l o k e a n d , j u s t a s importantly, he is passionate about the sport that is CrossFit. It’s not something that the 37-yearold has been involved in for too long – he is much better known for his time as a second row enforcer and then a top coach at Old Patesians Rugby Club – b u t t h e s e d ay s he’s been bitten b y t h e C r o ss F i t bug. “I’m abs o l u te l y l ov i n g it ,” he said. “It ’s d i f f e r e n t eve r y day. started playing for a proper team. “I think it was Charlton Rovers,” he said. “I was always a striker. I was quick and always had an eye for goal.” It was the start of a journey that would see him score more than 1,000 goals in senior Saturday and Sunday football, which is more than that great Brazilian, Pele, scored in his career in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Swap the ‘t’ in Pete for an ‘l’ and you get Pele, of course, and come to think of it, ‘Pele Turnbull’ has quite a nice ring to it! Turnbull’s adult football career b e g a n at t h e a g e of 1 6 a l m o st a s soon as he had left school and saw him play for Smiths, Cheltenham Saracens and Endsleigh among many others. And his career reached a pinnacle in the early 1990s when he got a call-up to play half-a-dozen games for Cheltenham, scoring one and making one in a dramatic 3-2 win over Gateshead at Whaddon Road. IIt’s t’s a p privilege rivilege tto op play lay rrugby ugby aatt g grand rand aage ge o off aalmost lmost 68 68 By the age of nearly 68 most people h av e re t i re d , g i v i n g t h e m t i m e to relax, put their feet up and read The Local Answer in print or online. Steve Yiend is almost 68, has retired and enjoys reading The Local Answer, but there is one big difference b e t we e n h i m a n d p re t t y m u c h a l l other 67-year-olds… he is still playing rugby. Not for him a gentler pastime like bowls or croquet, he is playing a sport t h a t i s h a rd , p h y s i c a l a n d confrontational, where injuries are as much a part of the game as a crooked feed into a scrum. And the grandfather of two is not just playing the occasional game either – he’s turning out week in, week out for Cheltenham Civil Service 2nds and is mixing it with friends and foe alike, some of whom are close on 50 years his junior. “I love it,” he chuckled. “I play every week I’m available. I’m a blindside flanker although when I first started playing I was a winger.” That was way back in 1975, in the days when World Cups and league rugby seemed as likely as teams calling themselves the Warriors, Chiefs or Sharks. “I was 25 when I started playing rugby,” said Yiend, who will be 68 just 1 0 d ay s b e f o r e C h r i s t m a s . “ I s t a r t e d late and I think that ’s one of the reasons I’m still playing now. I never played a lot of hard games in my early years.” Yiend’s first game was away to C a i n s c ro ss 4 t h s a n d h e re c k o n s t h a t h i s f i r s t g a m e o f ro u g h a n d t u m b l e with an oval ball ended in a win for Service. “I’m Service through and through,” he said with obvious pride. “I played on the wing for five or six years – I could run in those days – but once I played wing forward I never wanted to play anywhere else.” So how did the change of position come about? “We were playing Cheltenham N o r t h a t A g g G a rd e n s, ” h e r e c a l l e d . “We were short of a wing forward so

I volunteered to play there. It was beautiful, you got to go everywhere the ball was. I’ve not got the physique to play anywhere else in the scrum, I’m 13 stone dripping wet.” He may not have been the biggest but he served time in the club’s 1st XV, as well as all the other teams, in the days when clubs like Service would regularly field four or five sides on a Saturday afternoon. It ’s been a match made in heaven for more than 40 years now, although there have been occasions when Yiend admits he has come close to packing it all in. “When I was 42 I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease,” he said. “I lost two stone in six weeks and I thought that might be it as far as the rugby was concerned. Luckily it was in the s u m m e r a n d w h e n t h e n e w r u g by season came around I thought I’d give it another go.” He doesn’t regret that decision for

one moment of course, but rugby has dealt him some tough hands – he’s b r o k e n a n a r m a n d a l e g a n d t h re e years ago broke his collarbone. “Each summer I do doubt myself,” he admitted. “I take it week by week but I want to continue playing for as long as I can.” H e m ay n o t b e a b l e to d o everything that he could in yesteryear but Service supporters needn’t worry about him hanging up his boots any time soon. “I think I’m too committed,” he laughed. “I play because I love it. It’s a privilege to play rugby at my age, although all my family think I’m mad.” In the rugby off-season he enjoys going fishing – “There’s a maggot on one end of the rod and an idiot at the other end!” he laughed. And while he loves fishing, he’d far rather be playing Bream in winter than catching bream in summer! Full story online.

December is upon us. The year s e e m s t o h a ve f l ow n by a n d h e r e we are on the countdown to the 25th – although my children started that in January! December is a month steeped in tradition and w i l d l i fe p l ay s i t s p a r t , e s p e c i a l l y some of our plants. O n e o f t h e p l a n t s sy n o n y m o u s with Christmas has to be mistletoe, which we use to decorate our homes and, according to tradition, kiss underneath. Mistletoe is an interesting plant as it is a parasite which means it cannot survive independently. Instead, it attaches to a host tree or shrub and penetrates its branches so that it can absorb water and nutrients from that plant. Most mistletoe seeds are spread by birds that eat the berries. The seeds get stuck to the bird’s beak and are then wiped off on a new tree or can be excreted in droppings.

Another key plant at Christmas is of course holly. With its glossy green leaves and bright red berries it is the perfect colour combination for Christmas, but its associations with Christmas, as with mistletoe, stem way back into history. The use of holly as decoration dates back as far as Roman times when a feast was held at this time of year to honour their god of Saturn. Holly was used to decorate temples, along with other evergreens. The Local Answer

Christmas Christmas ddecorating ecorating ttrends rends you should should embrace embrace tthis his yyear ear you Whilst decorating in traditional red, green, silver and gold will always be a firm favourite at Christmas, every year sees new and emerging festive trends that influence how we get our homes ready for the season.

These are tiny barn elves with long hair and pointed hats and they make up lots of festive folklore stories in Scandi countries. Ad different ifferent ttree ree This is the one you will be seeing a lot of! This year sees us stepping away from the traditional tree and being a bit quirky yet considered with our Christmas trees. People are sticking with the festive tradition of a tree but using it in ways that work for the home and space you have – the tree is still the centrepiece, but there comes more creativity with it. For those that are short on space, use a Christmas tree wall hanging t a p e s t r y a n d s o r t y o u r p re ss i e s underneath in crates decorated with holly, ivy and baubles, or if you want to still have a tree, treat yourself to a pre-lit wall hanging half tree and pile

A SScandinavian candinavian CChristmas hristmas The British have really embraced our Scandinavian cousins and their traditions – just think how hygge has become part of our vocabulary. Traditionally, Scandinavian countries celebrate on Christmas Eve and I’m n o t s u r e we w i l l b e a d o p t i n g t h a t , but we are using a lot more wood, texture and natural elements to our Christmas décor schemes now. Collect pine cones and bring them i n to t h e h o m e o r t a k e yo u r gardening gloves with you on a cold, crisp walk and snip off some ivy or snowberries and add style in vases. Adding natural elements to a Christmas scheme makes it feel very Scandinavian! Paired with clean white, our love of traditional colours The Local Answer

However, it also has a dark side: it’s incredibly difficult to decompose and takes up large amounts of room in landfill sites, and its creation does harm to the environment by releasing CO2.

It is estimated that it would take a plastic cup fifty years to decompose, and a plastic drink bottle around 400 years. Some researchers believe that by 2050 there may be more plastic than fish in the oceans for these reasons.

H How ow ccan an I h help? elp? The simplest way to lower the amount of plastic created and disposed of is to recycle as much as you can. Reuse tupperware, such as plastic takeaway boxes, instead of throwing them away, and try to buy food in cardboard boxes instead of plastic ones. Money Money M Matters atters with with Roger Roger D Downes ownes o of fA Andorran ndorr ran

IInterest nterest R Rates ates Well we can’t say we weren’t warned, can we? The Bank of England raised base rate from its all time low of 0.25% to 0.5% in November – the first rise since July 2007 – in a move that had been widely predicted for many months. It set Money Matters thinking back to July 2007 and what was happening in the world the last time we saw such an event. Quite a lot was going on actually. Smoking was banned in public places in England for the first time. Apple had just launched its iPhone – yes that was only ten years ago a n d I wo n d e r h ow m a n y t r i l l i o n s o f d o l l a r s h a ve b e e n banked by Apple since, and how much tax they paid on those dollars of course. Venus Williams and Roger Federer both appeared in their respective Wimbledon finals as they did this year – OK , so some things never change! Enough of reminiscing. What does the change in base rate mean for the man in the street and those of us trying to run a business? Easy I hear you say – more expensive to borrow but better return on our savings. You would think so, wouldn’t you? But that relies on our banks playing fair by everyone and that’s where the problems start.

P Passing assing o on n tthe he ffull ull ccost ost o off tthe he rrise ise tto o aanyone nyone tthat hat w was as b borrowing orrowing money money Within 24 hours of the Bank of England’s announcement, every single bank in the country had announced that it was passing on the full cost of the rise to anyone that was borrowing money. Immediately (actually some of them o n l y i m p l e m e n te d i t w i t h e f fe c t f r o m t h e s t a r t o f December) our mortgages and bank overdrafts became more expensive. It shouldn’t hurt too much unless this rise is the first of many and this becomes a trend, in which case borrowing will become more expensive to the extent that many younger borrowers will never have seen rates at the levels they could become. The immediate issue, however, is for savers. As quick as t h e b a n k s w e r e t o c h a r g e u s m o r e f o r o u r b o r ro w i n g s , they have been noticeably slow in passing the benefit on to savers. In fact at the time of writing this article, none o f t h e m h a d . W h a t e ve r “ b u s i n e ss c a s e ” t h e y m a y p u t forward for not doing so, their behaviour is outrageous, yet not surprising. Those of us who can remember back to the events of July 2007 will know that they did the same thing then. For those of you who are borrowing – keep an eye on what happens over the next few months of Bank of England meetings, which take place on the first Thursday of every month, and keep your borrowing agreements under regular review. For those of you with savings, live in hope that one day the banks will see fit to play fair. To all of you, a very Merry Christmas!
