Hangover H angover SSOS OS It’s a well known fact that the festive period is a time for over indulgence of both food and alcohol. Many people turn up to work bleary eyed, nauseous, in pain, with vague recollections of the previous night at the work Christmas party. We all know that binge drinking is not healthy – our bodies making this clear in the form of a hangover. W Will ill rretains etains h hands-on ands-on rrole ole a att CCirencester irencester Will McCarthy has moved ‘upstairs’ at Cirencester Rugby Club. And no, the Gloucester Premier club have not built a second tier on their clubhouse at The Whiteway. It’s just that McCarthy has taken on the role of non-playing club captain a f te r b e i n g 1 s t X V c a p t a i n fo r t h e previous two years. “I injured myself pretty badly at the end of last season,” explained the 30 year-old. “I ruptured ankle ligaments reaching for the try-line.” So did he score? “No,” he laughed. “Alex Buchalik did in the next phase. It was a game against Wells and we needed to win if we were to stay up in Western Counties North, but we lost by three points.” McCarthy will need to have an operation on his damaged ankle, but had already been considering his

playing future before the injury. “I’d been playing senior rugby for 14 years,” said the former back row. “I knew the recovery was going to take a long time and that wouldn’t have been fair on the rest of the team, so I decided to stop playing.
Born B orn tto o rrun un a and nd rrun un Rob Forbes is a pretty good long distance runner. So good, in fact, that if he wins a race – he likes ultra marathons – or sets a course record it doesn’t seem to raise too many eyebrows. But when he does something out of the ordinary then it’s certainly worth shouting about , and that ’s just what the 35-year-old Cirencester AC runner managed in the Cotswold Way Century a couple of months ago. It was a performance that moved Cirencester AC’s excellent publicity officer Liza Darroch, a lady not given to hyperbole, to say: “His run of 17 hours 34 minutes to complete 100 m i l es of t h e Cotswold Way was of a stunning national standard a n d to o k a l m o s t t wo w h o l e h o u r s o f f t h e p re v i o u s record. This was o n l y o n e of h i s great runs this Rob Forbes year.”
“I will still be very involved with the club. I like the club, I like Deacs (Cirencester director of rugby Andy Deacon) and I wish the 1st team all the best.” McCarthy will still watch his old team-mates play of course – the new 1st XV captain is second row James Renowden – but his new role means he can also watch the 2nd XV when they are at home. The Whiteway is very much home for Cirencester born and bred McCarthy who started playing for the club at the age of “five or six”. He’ss been with them pretty much ever since, although he did have a spell away. “When I was 19 I went to live in Ireland,” he said. “My girlfriend Nicola, who is now my wife, is Irish and I lived in Ireland for three or four years.” Full story online. “My mum was listed for the World Equestrian Games in 1993. When she was six months’ pregnant with me she was st i l l competing internationally,” laughed Pippa, “so I was riding when I was in the womb.” Mum is Pammy Hutton who runs the Talland School of Equitation with her husband Brian.

Three Three m men en aand nd a football football cclub lub ...let ...let tthe he ccredits redits sstart tart ttoo rroll! oll! You’ve all heard of the film ‘Three Men and a Baby’… well, how about Three Men and a Football Club? While the former was a huge box office hit 30 years ago this year, the l a t te r r e f e r s t o a f o o t b a l l c l u b m u c h closer to home. T h e c l u b i n q u e s t i o n a re Andoversford and the ‘three men’ at the club are Phil Hendy, Matt Brown and Richard Cerrone. They are the driving forces behind the Cheltenham League club which were given an excellent platform in the early noughties by former chairman Kevin Mansell, who these days lives in Devon. And while ‘Three Men and a Baby ’ was considered one of the best comedy films in the 1980s; Hendy, Brown and Cerrone are deadly serious about their aims for Andoversford. “We are really ambitious and our goal is to get into the Northern Senior League,” said Hendy, who is club chairman and joint first-team manager with Brown.
We We feel feel w we’ve e’ve got got enough enough good good players players tto ow win in D Division ivision O One ne “To do that we have to win Division One of the Cheltenham League and we feel we’ve got enough good players to do that. Most of our players could play at a higher level. “At the very least we want to finish second because occasionally the team finishing runners-up get promoted as well. And if we don’t win promotion this season we’ll go all out to win promotion next season.” Ask Hendy who the key players are for Andoversford and he’ll name three. “Ryan Cleal is a very good central midfielder,” he said. “Striker Sonnie Burrows has played at a much higher level with Cheltenham Saracens and Cheltenham Civil Service, and Luke Lonergan is a good centre-back . He’s also our captain.” A n d H e n d y i s a l s o d e l i g h te d t h a t Jamie Ellison, who has also been with
Andoversford’ss first-team squad who won the Division Two title last season
Andoversford for many years, scored his 200th goal for the club recently. If Andoversford’s 1st XI fail to win p r o m o t i o n t h i s t i m e a ro u n d , i t certainly won’t be through a lack of effort on the part of Hendy, Brown – who still plays as a holding midfielder – and Cerrone, who is the club’s secretary and 3rd XI manager. They’ve put in plenty of work off the pitch to try to ensure that the dream becomes a reality, and this season the 1st XI are playing their home matches a t K i n g G e o rg e V p l ay i n g f i e l d s i n Hester ’s Way, Cheltenham, although the 2nds and 3rds continue to play in Andoversford. “ T h e 1 s t s p l ay o n t h e p i tc h t h a t S t Mark’s used to have,” said Hendy, “and we’re looking to redevelop the changing facilities. We made the m o ve b e c a u s e o f t h e p i tc h a t Andoversford. “It’s on a slope and very narrow and even though we won Division Two last season we found it didn’t really suit our style of football. We did better away from home on better pitches. “The long-term aim is to try to find
some land and be based in Andoversford, but for now we’re putting everything in place to try and win promotion, although we know it’s going to be tough.” It certainly is with teams like Cheltenham Civil Service around but Hendy, who was 3rd XI manager for three seasons and took over as chairman from Brown – who was also in sole charge of the 1st XI last term – is upbeat.
We We know know iit’s t’s ssomething omething that that w we e ccan an a achieve chieve “We’ve come close before,” he said. “We finished third in Division One once so we know it’s something that we can achieve.” And if they do go up, don’t be surprised if the little village just five miles outside Cheltenham gets out the red carpet for Andoversford’s three main men, just like Hollywood’s high and mighty did for the stars of ‘Three Men and a Baby’ all those years ago. Messrs Hendy, Brown and Cerrone can decide between themselves who is Tom Selleck!

For those that are short on space, use a Christmas tree wall hanging t a p e s t r y a n d s o r t y o u r p re ss i e s underneath in crates decorated with holly, ivy and baubles, or if you want to still have a tree, treat yourself to a pre-lit wall hanging half tree and pile

The Bank of England raised base rate from its all time low of 0.25% to 0.5% in November – the first rise since July 2007 – in a move that had been widely predicted for many months. It set Money Matters thinking back to July 2007 and what was happening in the world the last time we saw such an event. Quite a lot was going on actually. Smoking was banned in public places in England for the first time. Apple had just launched its iPhone – yes that was only ten years ago a n d I wo n d e r h ow m a n y t r i l l i o n s o f d o l l a r s h a ve b e e n banked by Apple since, and how much tax they paid on those dollars of course. Venus Williams and Roger Federer both appeared in their respective Wimbledon finals as they did this year – OK , so some things never change! Enough of reminiscing. What does the change in base rate mean for the man in the street and those of us trying to run a business? Easy I hear you say – more expensive to borrow but better return on our savings. You would think so, wouldn’t you? But that relies on our banks playing fair by everyone and that’s where the problems start.

Within 24 hours of the Bank of England’s announcement, every single bank in the country had announced that it was passing on the full cost of the rise to anyone that was borrowing money. Immediately (actually some of them o n l y i m p l e m e n te d i t w i t h e f fe c t f r o m t h e s t a r t o f December) our mortgages and bank overdrafts became more expensive. It shouldn’t hurt too much unless this rise is the first of many and this becomes a trend, in which case borrowing will become more expensive to the extent that many younger borrowers will never have seen rates at the levels they could become. The immediate issue, however, is for savers. As quick as t h e b a n k s w e r e t o c h a r g e u s m o r e f o r o u r b o r ro w i n g s , they have been noticeably slow in passing the benefit on to savers. In fact at the time of writing this article, none o f t h e m h a d . W h a t e ve r “ b u s i n e ss c a s e ” t h e y m a y p u t forward for not doing so, their behaviour is outrageous, yet not surprising. Those of us who can remember back to the events of July 2007 will know that they did the same thing then. For those of you who are borrowing – keep an eye on what happens over the next few months of Bank of England meetings, which take place on the first Thursday of every month, and keep your borrowing agreements under regular review. For those of you with savings, live in hope that one day the banks will see fit to play fair. To all of you, a very Merry Christmas!
