Captain Captain iiss h having aving a b ball al l a att SStinchcombe tinchcombe Nigel Hudson had just come down a l a d d e r w h e n h e s p o k e to T h e Lo c a l Answer. The self-employed builder and electrical contractor had been working on a roof all morning and the 47-year-old has certainly been hitting the heights since taking up golf at the start of the millennium. These days he is captain of Stinchcombe Hill – he hands over to his vice-captain Rod Helps at the club’s AGM at the end of March – and is thoroughly enjoying the role. You get the impression that Hudson would be happy to take on the captaincy for another 12 months if he was asked, although that won’t be happening. Club tradition dictates that a captain can only hold office for a year and there is plenty of tradition with a capital ‘T’ at Stinchcombe Hill because the club were formed as long ago as 1889. According to this year’s county year

book produced by the Gloucestershire Golf Union, that makes Stinchcombe Hill the oldest golf club in the county, along with Minchinhampton. Hudson is the latest in a long line of c a p t a i n s a t t h e c l u b l o c a te d i n t h e south of the county on the southern edge of the Cotswold escarpment above the Severn Valley. But it ’s hard to believe there are many, if any, who have enjoyed their time in the role as much as him.

For Tina, a mum-of-four who lives w i t h h e r h u s b a n d J o h n i n C a s h es Green on the outskirts of Stroud, it ’s certainly a case of better late than n eve r b e c a u s e f o r m u c h o f t h e p a s t decade she has been running for fun. “It ’s my escape route,” she said. “I find it relaxing.”

CCaptain aptain M Marvel arvel As most readers will know, Captain M a r ve l i s a f i c t i o n a l s u p e r h e r o character. It was also the nickname given to former England football skipper Bryan Robson back in the 80s. Such has been England’s footballing decline over the past 20 years or so that no-one has been up to carrying the mantle since (sorry, all you David Beckham fans but it’s true). However, The Local Answer might j u s t h a ve s p o k e n to s o m e o n e i n Gloucestershire who is deserving of the ‘Captain Marvel’ tag. Okay, so it ’s a different sport , but does that really matter? Step forward A l i st a i r H a m m o n d w h o i s c a pt a i n of Wotton-under-Edge Hockey Club. The 28-year-old has been club skipper for just over three seasons and during that time the men’s first team have celebrated three promotions and a re n o w p l ay i n g i n t h e P r e m i e r Division of the GoCrea8 League.

“It ’s been absolutely brilliant ,” he enthused. “I’m passionate about golf and I love the club. If you speak to most captains they ’ll say what an honour it is but it really is. “You get to meet new people from all over the county and I’ve had lots of support from the members and the staff at the club.” Hudson still has the best part of four months in the role, of course, and after his term of office ends you can guarantee he’ll give his successor all the support he needs when he tees off in his new job. It’s not always been golf and more golf for Hudson, however. In his younger days he was into motorbikes in quite a big way. “I used to do a lot of motocross,” he said. “I was into my motorsport and I was reasonably good at it. I enjoyed racing bikes. I was a member of Dursley AMCA and I’d describe myself as a good local club rider.” Full story online.

Harvey and Ellie Freer. Inset: Jacob Freer

Team Team FFreer reer llove ove ttheir heir h hockey ockey They say that absence makes the heart grow fonder and that would certainly appear to be the case with Harvey Freer and hockey. The soon-to-be 51-year-old loves his hockey – he’s very involved with Stroud which are the club just up the road from him – and yet it is not a sport he has been involved in all his life by any means. He played a bit at school and then s to p p e d p l a y i n g fo r we l l ov e r 1 0 years. He then joined a club in H e r t f o r d b e fo r e l a n d i n g u p i n t h e Stroud Valley via, believe it or not , Peru some 12 years ago. Even then he only really rediscovered his love for hockey four years ago. As is so often the case, the passion was rekindled by his children and he’s jolly pleased it was, because he’s now a committed member of the goahead club which are thriving at all levels of the games. All four of Harvey ’s children – Tom, 20, Joe, 18, Eleanor, 16, and 10 -yearold Jacob – play the sport, as does his wife Sian, who like her husband is a teacher and also had a break from the game in her 20s after playing at school. While Sian, a left-back or left-sided midfielder, was soon running around t h e a s t ro t u r f o n h o c k ey p i t c h e s a l l over Gloucestershire and beyond, Harvey was content to take a watching brief while his kids were put through their paces in the club’s junior set-up. However, it also has a dark side: it’s incredibly difficult to decompose and takes up large amounts of room in landfill sites, and its creation does harm to the environment by releasing CO2.

It is estimated that it would take a plastic cup fifty years to decompose, and a plastic drink bottle around 400 years. Some researchers believe that by 2050 there may be more plastic than fish in the oceans for these reasons.

O n e o f t h e p l a n t s sy n o n y m o u s with Christmas has to be mistletoe, which we use to decorate our homes and, according to tradition, kiss underneath. Mistletoe is an interesting plant as it is a parasite which means it cannot survive independently. Instead, it attaches to a host tree or shrub and penetrates its branches so that it can absorb water and nutrients from that plant. Most mistletoe seeds are spread by birds that eat the berries. The seeds get stuck to the bird’s beak and are then wiped off on a new tree or can be excreted in droppings.

Another key plant at Christmas is of course holly. With its glossy green leaves and bright red berries it is the perfect colour combination for Christmas, but its associations with Christmas, as with mistletoe, stem way back into history. The use of holly as decoration dates back as far as Roman times when a feast was held at this time of year to honour their god of Saturn. Holly was used to decorate temples, along with other evergreens. The Local Answer

IInterest nterest R Rates ates Well we can’t say we weren’t warned, can we? The Bank of England raised base rate from its all time low of 0.25% to 0.5% in November – the first rise since July 2007 – in a move that had been widely predicted for many months. It set Money Matters thinking back to July 2007 and what was happening in the world the last time we saw such an event. Quite a lot was going on actually. Smoking was banned in public places in England for the first time. Apple had just launched its iPhone – yes that was only ten years ago a n d I wo n d e r h ow m a n y t r i l l i o n s o f d o l l a r s h a ve b e e n banked by Apple since, and how much tax they paid on those dollars of course. Venus Williams and Roger Federer both appeared in their respective Wimbledon finals as they did this year – OK , so some things never change! Enough of reminiscing. What does the change in base rate mean for the man in the street and those of us trying to run a business? Easy I hear you say – more expensive to borrow but better return on our savings. You would think so, wouldn’t you? But that relies on our banks playing fair by everyone and that’s where the problems start.

P Passing assing o on n tthe he ffull ull ccost ost o off tthe he rrise ise tto o aanyone nyone tthat hat w was as b borrowing orrowing money money Within 24 hours of the Bank of England’s announcement, every single bank in the country had announced that it was passing on the full cost of the rise to anyone that was borrowing money. Immediately (actually some of them o n l y i m p l e m e n te d i t w i t h e f fe c t f r o m t h e s t a r t o f December) our mortgages and bank overdrafts became more expensive. It shouldn’t hurt too much unless this rise is the first of many and this becomes a trend, in which case borrowing will become more expensive to the extent that many younger borrowers will never have seen rates at the levels they could become. The immediate issue, however, is for savers. As quick as t h e b a n k s w e r e t o c h a r g e u s m o r e f o r o u r b o r ro w i n g s , they have been noticeably slow in passing the benefit on to savers. In fact at the time of writing this article, none o f t h e m h a d . W h a t e ve r “ b u s i n e ss c a s e ” t h e y m a y p u t forward for not doing so, their behaviour is outrageous, yet not surprising. Those of us who can remember back to the events of July 2007 will know that they did the same thing then. For those of you who are borrowing – keep an eye on what happens over the next few months of Bank of England meetings, which take place on the first Thursday of every month, and keep your borrowing agreements under regular review. For those of you with savings, live in hope that one day the banks will see fit to play fair. To all of you, a very Merry Christmas!
