LLimpets impets Cold, isn’t it? My body’s pre-existing lumps and bumps are impossible to identify amongst the influx of goose pimples, which rise to greet the frigid morning air of my home as I tumble from my bed to spend the day labouring to pay for whatnots the telly tells me I need. Enslaved as I am and forced to work through a harsh winter, I can’t help but envy the dormant plant life sitting out the cold weather. I often catch myself counting down the days until I can once again stuff handfuls of free food into my face hole. I’m pretty landlocked where I live, but on a rare day off you might just catch me travelling to the coast where there is always something to be imbibed. It’s pretty cold all year round at the beach and everything has simply learned to cope, which is good news for us foragers!

M Miniature iniature v volcano-shaped olcano-shaped sshellfish hellfish From seaweed to, depending on your skill set, line caught fish, there is no end to the selection. But one rather uncommon find is the limpet . These are instantly recognisable by most individuals who have been to the beach at least once. Covering rock surfaces like acne once covered my face, this miniature volcano-shaped shellfish is harder to dislodge from its resting place than dried-on Weetabix from a kitchen counter if it becomes aware of your presence. Slide a thin blade between the rock and the shell then quickly prise from the rock to dislodge. If you muck your timing up you will have to find a different one and try again.

P Piña iña CColada olada A sweet , rum-based cocktail made with rum, cream of coconut and pineapple juice, the Piña Colada’s origin is contested by three Puerto Rican bartenders. Ramón ‘Monchito’ Marrero Pérez claims to have first made the cocktail at the Caribe Hilton Hotel’s Beachcomber Bar in San Juan in August 1952, using the newly-available Coco López cream of coconut. Coco López was developed in Puerto Rico in 1948 by Don Ramón López-Irizarry, hence the Puerto Rican connection and the 1952 account of the drink’s creation. Some say the drink did not acquire its name until the 1960s. Ricardo García, who also worked at the Caribe, says that it was he who invented the drink , while Ramón Portas Mingot says he created it in 1963 at the Barrachina Restaurant. The restaurant stands by his claim to this day. National Piña Colada Day is celebrated on the islands on 10th July. Ingredients: Ingredients: Ice; 35ml white rum; 1 tbsp coconut-flavoured rum; 50ml coconut cream; 50ml pineapple juice; 3-4 pineapple chunks; pineapple slice and maraschino cherry to garnish. Method: Method: 1 Pour the two rums, coconut cream, pineapple juice and chunks of pineapple into a blender and blend until smooth. 2 To serve, pour into a cocktail glass and garnish with a pineapple slice and a maraschino cherry.

Method: Method: 1 Heat your oven to 180°C (fan 160°C/gas mark 4). Roughly chop the carrots, swede, onions and celery, then fry the vegetables in half the oil and butter in a heavybased casserole dish for 4-5 minutes until golden. Add the garlic and fry for a further minute, then put aside. 2 Put the venison into a sealable plastic bag with the

seasoned flour and shake to coat. Add the remaining oil and butter to the casserole dish, then fry the venison on a high heat, stirring periodically until well browned. Don’t put too much meat in the dish at once – cook in batches if you don’t have a big casserole dish. Set aside with the vegetables. 3 Add the redcurrant jelly and wine to the dish and bring to the boil, making sure you scrape up all the bits from the meat and vegetables that have stuck to the bottom. Pour in the stock , then add the thyme, bay leaf, venison and vegetables. Season to your taste and bring to the boil. Put the lid on the dish and move it to the oven for about 2 hours or until tender. Remove from the oven and check the seasoning. 4 Serve with a generous helping of fresh, crusty bread.

G Garden arden b birds irds Winter can be a really tough time for garden birds. Insects are few and far between and most berries have all but disappeared. So it ’s important to remember them in colder months. Simple things you can do could save tiny little lives this new year. Hanging feeders in your garden can provide a l i fe l i n e f o r t h o s e i n n e e d , a n d remembering a few simple things will help you maintain the perfect garden buffet for birds.

Sunflower seeds inevitably attract numerous types of bird – tits, finches and nuthatches. Sunflower hearts provide a no-mess, nutritious treat , while black oil sunflower seeds (with shells left on) provide plenty of energy and are easy for even small birds to crack open. They are messier but last longer due to the protective husk .

Seed mixes are a good option if you’re limited on feeding space – suitable for fe e d e r s , t a b l e s a n d g ro u n d fe e d i n g . Always buy a good quality mix, low on wheat and barley grains and avoid any that contain pink and green chunks – t h e s e a re d o g b i s c u i t s a n d a re n o t suitable without being soaked. Similarly, bread should not be fed to birds – garden or otherwise. It is low in nutritional value and bloats birds so they can’t take in the energy rich, quality food they really need. Plain popcorn, grated cheese and raisins are c u p b o a rd much b e t te r s to re alternatives. A fresh water supply should also be a p r i o r i t y – f r o s t s c a n b e t a c k l e d by floating a ping pong ball or rubber duck on the surface. However, once you’ve gone to the trouble of helping your garden visitors, a l l g o o d m ay b e u n d o n e w i t h o n e simple mistake that is so easy to avoid. Bob’s advice is to clean feeders as often as you can – washing with a small amount of disinfectant at least once a week is ideal; rinsing each day is even better. N New ew YYear’s ear’s rresolutions esolutions for for pet pet oowners wners New Year ’s resolutions are an opportunity to set new goals or ambitions for the upcoming year. Normally that means giving up something like chocolate or alcohol, or taking on a fitness challenge. Why not make some pet-focussed resolutions instead this year? Here are some suggestions for resolutions that will keep Fido and Felix happy: Exercise: Exercise: Dogs and cats need both physical and mental stimulation. Take your dog on a new walk or to a different area – new smells and locations are a great excitement compared to the same old trudge around the local park . Cats love activities too. Catnip toys, crinkly balls, and even cardboard boxes are great entertainment. Interact with your cat more – don’t just live in the same space together! Feeding: Feeding: Are you feeding the best cat or dog food? Are you measuring out the correct amount or just ad-libbing it? Is it time to move on to a senior food, or one with some extra joint or skin supplements? Why not upgrade your best friend’s diet? If you appreciate your own nutrition, make sure you aren’t short-changing your pets! TTreats: reats: Don’t forget all those ‘dreamies’ and ‘markies’ have extra calories. If weight is an issue for your pet, try cutting back or looking for healthier options. Health: H ealth: Have you been ignoring that skin lump or fetid dog breath? Is old age starting to catch up with the furry one? Don’t be afraid to seek some veterinary advice. Book in a health check if required, make sure vaccinations are up to date, and stay on top of the basics like flea and worm control. Microchips: M icrochips: It is now law that all dogs should be microchipped. It’s cheap and takes seconds to get done, plus it gives you peace of mind that your pet is i d e n t i f i e d s h o u l d s o m e t h i n g h a p p e n . I f yo u r p e t i s already microchipped, make sure your details are up to date! There’s no point in having your pet microchipped if all the details are wrong! Don’t feel limited by my suggestions. Use your imagination and think of all the joy your pet gives you. Why not go on a dog-friendly holiday this year? Splash out on that new dog or cat bed. Maybe it’s time you both took up running again or committed to some regular ‘play-time’ with Felix , not just the occasional ‘feed and fuss’. Happy New Year and enjoy spending it with your furry, four-legged friend.

Motorsport programmes are not only the promotional face of a manufacturer, but they are also an experimental platform to develop new technology for road cars. Audi have confirmed that they will be withdrawing in 2017 from the World Endurance Championship. The knock-on effect will be that, in 2017, there will not be a formal works team competing at the legendary 24 hours of Le Mans – a race Audi has won 13 times. The manufacturer is ending 18 years of prototype racing to focus efforts on the FIA Formula E (electric) racing series. A yyear ear o off achievements ... achievements... perhaps! perhaps! Another gardening year is just beginning and this could be the year you actually plant all the bulbs you bought, rather than leaving them in their bag and discovering them in June in a forgotten pile of ‘things to do’! This could also be the year you really do disinfect the greenhouse a n d s c r u b yo u r e m p t y p o t s w i t h warm soapy water ready to refill them. So on that note, here are some suggestions for January...

to reduce pests and diseases. If you cover the soil w i t h b l a c k p l a st i c t h i s w i l l warm the soil up ready for sowing seed later and keep weeds down. Try forcing some rhubarb. Cover the dormant buds with either straw or dry leaves inside a terracotta forcing pot or a large bucket to keep the light out. Tender pink stems will be produced in a few weeks time. Don’t do this to the same plant every year, as it will need to recover and build up its reserves.

Less certainty follows 2016’s other big shock victory (no, not Leicester City winning the Premier League, although there is plenty of uncertainty as to what happens to them too). No, I mean the decision of the British public to direct our government to negotiate our way out of the European Union. The Prime Minister says that she will trigger Article 50 in the spring, which will begin the two-year countdown to ‘independence’. The debate will start all over again as to whether it’s a good idea, but if the PM is true to her word, there will be no recount. As for a prediction, I think there’s too much at stake for us to r u s h i n t o a n y t h i n g a n d t h e r e f o r e we w i l l s t i l l b e discussing terms this time next year.

Nigel Farage would, I’m sure, but I can’t really see it happening! Inflation and interest rates have been at consistently low levels for several years now and, if the government is to get anywhere near its economic targets, they probably need to stay that way for 2017 and even beyond. Not great news for savers, but likely to be a great help to businesses in these continuing uncertain times.

EEven ven m more ore rred ed tape tape from from the the banks banks What will happen if the base rate falls even further and actually goes negative? Will they demand that we pay the banks to look after our money for us? Nothing would surprise me with the banks; that’s probably the one certainty for 2017 – more branch closures, bigger r e t u r n s f o r t h e s h a re h o l d e r s a n d m o r e r e d t a p e f o r those of us trying to operate, let alone open, a business bank account.
