... and a very Happy New Year to all our readers! Now the festivities are over, it ’s time to look to the year ahead. Many of us will make New Year’s resolutions, and if you’re looking for ideas, why not choose to help the environment? Annabel Laughton offers her advice on reducing our carbon ‘pawprint ’ and the impact keeping pets has on the environment in ‘Save the Planet’. Jenny Stevens also has some ideas on how to keep garden wildlife happy throughout winter by keeping bird feeding stations well-cleaned and well-stocked. Read more in ‘Wildlife Matters’. After the huge success and popularity of our previous ‘TLA Charity’ competition last summer, we’re doing it again! We’ve teamed up with ten of our generous advertisers to donate an amazing £5,000 to a Gloucestershire-based charity or not-for-profit organisation. For more information, see the centre pages and get nominating now!

Method: Method: 1 Heat your oven to 180°C (fan 160°C/gas mark 4). Roughly chop the carrots, swede, onions and celery, then fry the vegetables in half the oil and butter in a heavybased casserole dish for 4-5 minutes until golden. Add the garlic and fry for a further minute, then put aside. 2 Put the venison into a sealable plastic bag with the
seasoned flour and shake to coat. Add the remaining oil and butter to the casserole dish, then fry the venison on a high heat, stirring periodically until well browned. Don’t put too much meat in the dish at once – cook in batches if you don’t have a big casserole dish. Set aside with the vegetables. 3 Add the redcurrant jelly and wine to the dish and bring to the boil, making sure you scrape up all the bits from the meat and vegetables that have stuck to the bottom. Pour in the stock , then add the thyme, bay leaf, venison and vegetables. Season to your taste and bring to the boil. Put the lid on the dish and move it to the oven for about 2 hours or until tender. Remove from the oven and check the seasoning. 4 Serve with a generous helping of fresh, crusty bread.

LLimpets impets Cold, isn’t it? My body’s pre-existing lumps and bumps are impossible to identify amongst the influx of goose pimples, which rise to greet the frigid morning air of my home as I tumble from my bed to spend the day labouring to pay for whatnots the telly tells me I need. Enslaved as I am and forced to work through a harsh winter, I can’t help but envy the dormant plant life sitting out the cold weather. I often catch myself counting down the days until I can once again stuff handfuls of free food into my face hole. I’m pretty landlocked where I live, but on a rare day off you might just catch me travelling to the coast where there is always something to be imbibed. It’s pretty cold all year round at the beach and everything has simply learned to cope, which is good news for us foragers!
Miniature M iniature v volcano-shaped olcano-shaped sshellfish hellfish From seaweed to, depending on your skill set, line caught fish, there is no end to the selection. But one rather uncommon find is the limpet . These are instantly recognisable by most individuals who have been to the beach at least once. Covering rock surfaces like acne once covered my face, this miniature volcano-shaped shellfish is harder to dislodge from its resting place than dried-on Weetabix from a kitchen counter if it becomes aware of your presence. Slide a thin blade between the rock and the shell then quickly prise from the rock to dislodge. If you muck your timing up you will have to find a different one and try again.

P Piña iña CColada olada A sweet , rum-based cocktail made with rum, cream of coconut and pineapple juice, the Piña Colada’s origin is contested by three Puerto Rican bartenders. Ramón ‘Monchito’ Marrero Pérez claims to have first made the cocktail at the Caribe Hilton Hotel’s Beachcomber Bar in San Juan in August 1952, using the newly-available Coco López cream of coconut. Coco López was developed in Puerto Rico in 1948 by Don Ramón López-Irizarry, hence the Puerto Rican connection and the 1952 account of the drink’s creation. Some say the drink did not acquire its name until the 1960s. Ricardo García, who also worked at the Caribe, says that it was he who invented the drink , while Ramón Portas Mingot says he created it in 1963 at the Barrachina Restaurant. The restaurant stands by his claim to this day. National Piña Colada Day is celebrated on the islands on 10th July. Ingredients: Ingredients: Ice; 35ml white rum; 1 tbsp coconut-flavoured rum; 50ml coconut cream; 50ml pineapple juice; 3-4 pineapple chunks; pineapple slice and maraschino cherry to garnish. Method: Method: 1 Pour the two rums, coconut cream, pineapple juice and chunks of pineapple into a blender and blend until smooth. 2 To serve, pour into a cocktail glass and garnish with a pineapple slice and a maraschino cherry.

G Garden arden b birds irds Winter can be a really tough time for garden birds. Insects are few and far between and most berries have all but disappeared. So it ’s important to remember them in colder months. Simple things you can do could save tiny little lives this new year. Hanging feeders in your garden can provide a l i fe l i n e f o r t h o s e i n n e e d , a n d remembering a few simple things will help you maintain the perfect garden buffet for birds.
Sunflower seeds inevitably attract numerous types of bird – tits, finches and nuthatches. Sunflower hearts provide a no-mess, nutritious treat , while black oil sunflower seeds (with shells left on) provide plenty of energy and are easy for even small birds to crack open. They are messier but last longer due to the protective husk .

Seed mixes are a good option if you’re limited on feeding space – suitable for fe e d e r s , t a b l e s a n d g ro u n d fe e d i n g . Always buy a good quality mix, low on wheat and barley grains and avoid any that contain pink and green chunks – t h e s e a re d o g b i s c u i t s a n d a re n o t suitable without being soaked. Similarly, bread should not be fed to birds – garden or otherwise. It is low in nutritional value and bloats birds so they can’t take in the energy rich, quality food they really need. Plain popcorn, grated cheese and raisins are c u p b o a rd much b e t te r s to re alternatives. A fresh water supply should also be a p r i o r i t y – f r o s t s c a n b e t a c k l e d by floating a ping pong ball or rubber duck on the surface. However, once you’ve gone to the trouble of helping your garden visitors, a l l g o o d m ay b e u n d o n e w i t h o n e simple mistake that is so easy to avoid. I t i s e ss e n t i a l t h a t b i r d f e e d e r s a n d baths are cleaned regularly to stop deadly diseases and parasites

T h e campaign aims to show people that by practising good hygiene in the garden, these fatal afflictions can be avoided. Bob’s advice is to clean feeders as often as you can – washing with a small amount of disinfectant at least once a week is ideal; rinsing each day is even better. Always Always llook ook ttoo hhelp elp aand nd bbee kkind ind Happy New Year – and let ’s hope 2017 treats us a little more kindly than 2016. We have certainly had one fast ride of ups and downs over t h e l a s t 1 2 m o n t h s , a n d a re s t i l l reeling from the events of the world. The estimated 16 million cats and dogs in the UK come with a sizeable carbon pawprint – it ’s been calculated that the average family pet in the UK generates more carbon than a person living in a developing country. So how can we reduce this? The biggest contributor to pets’ carbon emissions is probably what they eat, including the food itself, packaging and the carbon costs of transporting it. Thankfully, the pet food industry has moved on in the last few years and there are more choices out there.

If today is another sparkling spring day, clear as Buxton’s spring water, you’ll hit the Tissington Trail on your bikes, or explore further on foot . Renting cottages like Oldfield House, Snelston, or Church Farm Cottage at Stanshope (pictured above) ensures perfect immersion in the area. Church Farm, north of Ashbourne, is a working farm (time your stay right and newborn lambs await). It epitomises beautifully appointed self-catering accommodation in the middle of the area’s scenic and cultural action. If you prefer hotels, try nearby Izaak Walton Hotel or Hillcrest House.

A An n experimental experimental p platform latform tto o develop develop n new ew technology technology I am going to mention a bit about motorsport, but please bear with me as this does impact what we will be driving now and in the very near future. Motorsport programmes are not only the promotional face of a manufacturer, but they are also an experimental platform to develop new technology for road cars. Audi have confirmed that they will be withdrawing in 2017 from the World Endurance Championship. The knock-on effect will be that, in 2017, there will not be a formal works team competing at the legendary 24 hours of Le Mans – a race Audi has won 13 times. The manufacturer is ending 18 years of prototype racing to focus efforts on the FIA Formula E (electric) racing series. Volkswagen are re-considering their motorsport programmes, as the m o v e t o e l e c t r i c p ow e r i s a k ey strategy for their road cars. 2017 year I 2 017 – tthe he year hope h ope tthings hings sstart tart tto o ccome ome ttogether ogether 2016 was a year of the unexpected – the Brexit vote, Donald Trump’s election victory, Leicester winning football’s Premiership, and Ed Balls defying the judges week after week on Strictly. My hope for Gloucester in 2017 is that it is the year when things start to come together. We all get frustrated from time to time that things take longer than expected, but that’s life. 2017, I believe, will be the year when we m o ve f r o m t h e p l a n n i n g t o t h e d e l i v e r y p h a s e fo r a number of projects. Firstly, our new waste and recycling service. The Council has invested over £2 million in new vehicles to enable the collection of cardboard, mixed plastics and textiles from the week commencing 16th January. This will make recycling easier and should push our recycling rate above 50%.
The The 2 21st 1st ccentury entury ffacility acility tthe he ccity ity d deserves eserves In regeneration terms, we will see the new bus station rise out of the ground when highway works and utility service diversions have been completed, giving us the 21st century facility the city deserves. Bakers Quay will finally start to be transformed after a near twenty year wait , and the former Kwik Save site will become affordable housing after a decade of dereliction. Work will also move ahead at Meadow Park to finally bring home Gloucester City FC after too long in the wilderness. The plans for Kings Quarter will advance with a detailed planning application and we will settle on the future of the former Fleece Hotel site, having completed archaeology and site investigation works during 2016.
CCelebrating elebrating tthe he ccommunity ommunity sspirit pirit tthat hat triumphed triumphed in in the the face face of of a adversity dversity The Joint Core Strategy, setting out development plans for Gloucester, Cheltenham and Tewkesbury to 2031, should finally be adopted. Our programme of events will include the return of the Tall Ships Festival and the Royal Three Counties Henson Pig Trail, building on the success of Scrumpty in 2015. So there is a lot to look forward to and I’m optimistic about 2017. I hope it brings you everything you wish for, too. @ @cllrpauljames cllrpauljames

A yyear ear o off achievements ... achievements... perhaps! perhaps! Another gardening year is just beginning and this could be the year you actually plant all the bulbs you bought, rather than leaving them in their bag and discovering them in June in a forgotten pile of ‘things to do’! This could also be the year you really do disinfect the greenhouse a n d s c r u b yo u r e m p t y p o t s w i t h warm soapy water ready to refill them. You may also take cuttings from your tender perennials rather than meaning to and losing them, a n d l a b e l a l l t h e s e e d s yo u s o w rather than thinking that you will re m e m b e r a n d e n d i n g u p w i t h a lucky dip! So on that note, here are some suggestions for January...
to reduce pests and diseases. If you cover the soil w i t h b l a c k p l a st i c t h i s w i l l warm the soil up ready for sowing seed later and keep weeds down. Try forcing some rhubarb. Cover the dormant buds with either straw or dry leaves inside a terracotta forcing pot or a large bucket to keep the light out. Tender pink stems will be produced in a few weeks time. Don’t do this to the same plant every year, as it will need to recover and build up its reserves.

2017 2 017 – w what hat n next? ext? If 2016 was the year that saw us lose so many legends and was the year of electoral surprise, what does 2017 have in store for us? Donald Trump will be inaugurated as the forty fifth President of the United States. Not everyone sees it as a good thing and many don’t think he will see the full te r m , b u t I w i l l b e i n te r e s te d to s e e w h a t e f f e c t h i s business acumen can have in the political sector.
TThe he ttwo-year wo-year countdown countdown tto o ‘‘independence’ independence’ Less certainty follows 2016’s other big shock victory (no, not Leicester City winning the Premier League, although there is plenty of uncertainty as to what happens to them too). No, I mean the decision of the British public to direct our government to negotiate our way out of the European Union. The Prime Minister says that she will trigger Article 50 in the spring, which will begin the two-year countdown to ‘independence’. The debate will start all over again as to whether it’s a good idea, but if the PM is true to her word, there will be no recount. As for a prediction, I think there’s too much at stake for us to r u s h i n t o a n y t h i n g a n d t h e r e f o r e we w i l l s t i l l b e discussing terms this time next year.

Maybe the PM will go one step closer to winning the next election through making herself popular by d e c l a r i n g 2 3 r d J u n e a s a p u b l i c h o l i d a y fo r Independence Day. Nigel Farage would, I’m sure, but I can’t really see it happening! Inflation and interest rates have been at consistently low levels for several years now and, if the government is to get anywhere near its economic targets, they probably need to stay that way for 2017 and even beyond. Not great news for savers, but likely to be a great help to businesses in these continuing uncertain times.
EEven ven m more ore rred ed tape tape from from the the banks banks What will happen if the base rate falls even further and actually goes negative? Will they demand that we pay the banks to look after our money for us? Nothing would surprise me with the banks; that’s probably the one certainty for 2017 – more branch closures, bigger r e t u r n s f o r t h e s h a re h o l d e r s a n d m o r e r e d t a p e f o r those of us trying to operate, let alone open, a business bank account.
