@thelocalanswer @thelocalanswer
The Aviation is a beautiful light purple cocktail, said to have been created in New York in the early 1900s by bartender Hugo Ensslin. T h e i n g re d i e n t t h a t g i ve s t h i s g i n - b a s e d d r i n k i t s pretty colour is Crème de Violette, which was actually discontinued for a period towards the end of the 20th century. While the classic recipe calls for this ingredient, the cocktail was still being made without it during this time. So if you can’t get your hands on Crème de Violette, don’t panic – just be careful to balance the other ingredients, as the Aviation can become a bit sour without it . Ingredients: Ingredients: 50ml gin; 15ml Maraschino liqueur; 10ml Crème de violette; 25ml lemon juice; 1 Maraschino cherry to garnish or decorative flower. Method: Method: 1 Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker and fill with ice. 2 Shake well and strain into a chilled martini glass. 3 Garnish with a cherry or flower. Note: You can purchase Crème de Violette and Maraschino liqueur online – just search for the ingredients on Google.

SStay tay aactive ctive tthis his aautumn utumn As the nights get darker and the days get colder, focus can often be lost from prioritising health and fitness, due to the lack of motivation people often begin to feel. However, fitness is crucial to maintain all year round, with the NHS recommending 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise per week for adults. Regular exercise can help with seasonal affective disorder, feelings of depression and loneliness, and can give a purpose to evenings otherwise spent on the sofa.
B Benefits enefits o off a autumn utumn a and nd w winter inter ffitness itness The endorphins the body releases after an exercise session are crucial to helping beat those winter blues, which can often be caused by a drop in activity levels. Team sports can also be played i n d o o r s a n d o f t e n g i ve m o r e satisfaction due to the social element of being around and interacting with other people. Studio 19 was the first clinic to offffer this outstanding treatment in Cheltenham and has gone from strength to strength with many amazing results and very happy clients.
What is Cryotherapy and what does it treat?
Cryopen is an advanced Cryotherapy innovation that is a fast, effective, safe and new solution for removal of skin imperfections. Procedures typically last from 5 to 30 seconds, so you can be in and out of the salon quickly, but with the assurance of the utmost client care.
Cryopen emits a fine jet of Nitrous Oxide under high pressure, which allows the work to be performed at millimetre precision. This destroys the tissue by freezing the fluid, which ruptures the membrane, thereby destroying the cell. This means there will be no collateral damage to healthy tissue around the area, as it is so incredibly precise and accurate. Cosmetic procedures such as skin tags, milia and cherry anginomas are no longer being treated by Doctors on the NHS, but with Cryopen you can now have them removed in the salon!

We all have money-issues to overcome in life, so it is up to us as parents to ensure we are as mindful and conscious as

Additional to King’s Acre’s popular stock homes, there are plots remaining for homes that can be designed and tailored to the customer’s specification. All plots come with a private garden, block-paved drive and an adjacent garage, while park benefits include easy access and adaptable properties, minimal maintenance and a park manager on site. Having viewed the plots, the customers went away visibly impressed by the close-knit community spirit on show amongst the over-50s residents, with plans and ideas for designing their own home at King’s Acre. W Watch atch sstyle tyle ffor or m men: en: tthe he aautomatic utomatic w ay way Modern analogue watches, whether automatic or quartz-powered, are anachronisms now digital technology is ubiquitous. However, though few men must wear one, a traditional watch r e m a i n s o n e o f t h e fe w u n i v e r s a l l y acceptable pieces of male jewellery.
FFunctional unctional o origins rigins Over a century ago, men’s wristwatches originated as functional timepieces for warfare, aviation, diving and motorsport . Nowadays, technology means divers, pilots and racers no longer need wristwatches. Instead, watches make statements, demonstrate affinity with such fields, celebrate watch craftsmanship or make soulful counterpoints to digital technology. Pilot watches were originally largedialled for legibility in cockpits, while racing chronographs measured time and speed before digital timing was invented. And dive-watches? They had to be easily read, water resistant and s h o w r e m a i n i n g d i v e t i m e. D re s s watches just have to be slim and stylish…
A Affordable ffordable h homages omages Prices for modern automatics range from under £100 to millions! Watch brands range from the affordable, such as Gloucestershire’s Geckota, to global luxury brands like Omega, Rolex or IWC. IWC’s £7,200 Big Pilot is directly descended from the firm’s 1930s watches. At the other end of the scale, Geckota’s 44mm and 40mm K1 are respectful homages to early pilot watches – with proven Seiko automatic movements, sunray dials, sapphire crystals and 100m water resistance – costing a couple of hundred pounds. And the 40mm dial suits smaller, maybe feminine, wrists too!
N No oo other ther w watch atch h has as tthe he M Moonwatch’s oonwatch’s ccachet achet For divers, classics like Omega’s Seamaster do for thousands of pounds what Seiko’s SKX007 does for £200, but with different history, coveted ‘Swiss Made’ labels, ultra-exotic materials and costly marketing. Racing chronographs too: Geckota’s draws inspiration from a 1960s Heuer
Camaro – with intelligent modern twists such as Seiko’s VK43 Meca-Quartz m o ve m e n t fo r m e c h a n i c a l ‘ fe e l ’ w i t h quartz’s low-price and accuracy. The £299 Geckota may not have the cachet of the Omega S p e e d m a s te r chronograph that visited the moon. Yet, like other good affordable brands, it is a capable watch, with a story and Seiko’s legendary reliability. Not everyone wants to wear £5,000 on their wrist… Automatic dress watches range from Orient’s highly underrated Bambino and the Swiss-made Tissot T-Classic (both under £250), to Rolex’s iconic Datejust costing 30 times as much.
A An na antidote ntidote tto od digital igital ttechnology echnology Whether it’s Rolex luxury or Geckota’s affordability, whatever your reason for buying, the right automatic watch promises years of pleasure, association with watch history and a refreshing antidote to digital technology. Firstly we had ‘Dieselgate’ which created the biggest fallout we have ever seen in the motor industry. It is alleged to have forced a certain manufacturer to abandon premier m o to r s p o r t s i n 2 0 1 7 , s u c h a s t h e World Rally Championship and the World Endurance Championship, which includes the historic Le Mans race. The abandonment was allegedly due to having to pay $20 billion in fines and settlements of various lawsuits related to Dieselgate in the US.

The lid on the coffin is getting tighter and the combustion engine has been sucked, squeezed, banged and now will blow its final breath. To have true electric motoring means supermarkets, business parks and multi-storey car parks – to name a few – need fast chargers by every single parking space. House builders n e e d to e n s u r e eve r y n e w b u i l d driveway has a car charging station and ideally solar panels on the roof. The humble garage/fuel station forecourt needs to diversify. The investment required is huge. After the high of knowing that we can soon cross the Severn bridges for free, it’s been offset by knowing that,
after 2040, we can no longer dream of walking into, let ’s say, a Ferrari dealership and buying their brand new V6, V8, V10 or V12 supercar. We can still buy used or a classic, but with talk of taxes and tolls for combustion engined cars to use stretches of road and motorway (M4 and M32 have been mentioned) and pol lution c h a r g e s a c ro s s m a n y c i t i e s – t h e dream of open road motoring is becoming closed.

I don’t think we will go as far as “the gangs took over the highways, ready to wage war for a tank of juice”, but another line from the film series will sadly become true in our lifetime – “the last of the V8’s – a piece of history”.

The Fayre is a very big draw for visitors with in excess of 120 stalls around the town, a large Food Hall, two stages for music bands and a separate ‘Funion’ area near the lake especially for children. The Onion Show, staged in the Memorial Hall, is also unique – class exhibits can only be from the Onion Family, and there are children’s classes as well. Exhibitors come from all over the UK to compete for the cash prizes and trophies, making for fierce competition. The Onion Eating Contests for men and women attract many entries each year and take place in the afternoon on the main stage. The Onion Show is affiliated to the National Vegetable Society and therefore always has a reputable NVS judge for the exhibits. For all information on the Fayre, and especially for entering the contests, please visit newentonionfayre.org. Alternatively, for general enquiries contact: onions@newentonionfayre.net

Promoting Promoting G Gloucester’s loucester’s history history aand nd hheritage eritage September is the month of the Gloucester History Festival. This event has grown in recent years under the chairmanship of Gloucester’s MP, supported by a strong committee including the Civic Trust , City Council and Marketing Gloucester. People regularly tell me that they want us to promote Gloucester’s history and heritage more, and the History Festival is one way in which we are doing this. September starts with Gloucester Day on Saturday 2nd. Gloucester Day celebrates the lifting of the Siege of Gloucester in the Civil War and has been taken on by Town Crier Alan Myatt as a way of celebrating all that is good about Gloucester today. The inauguration of the Mock Mayor of Barton takes place in the morning, followed by a special service at St Mary de Crypt and the main procession in the afternoon. Stalls and activities will fill the gate streets.
O One ne o off tthe he b best est p programmes rogrammes for for Heritage Heritage O Open pen Days Days iin n tthe he w whole hole ccountry ountry The following weekend is Heritage Open Days, where historic buildings which are not usually accessible to the public throw open their doors. Thanks to the work of the Civic Trust, Gloucester has one of the best programmes for Heritage Open Days in the whole country. The talks at Blackfriars Priory have grown in size and stature in recent years. This year there is a line-up worthy of a national festival, including Tony Robinson of ‘Blackadder ’ and ‘Time Team’ fame, TV historian Dan Snow and former Chancellor Ken Clarke. There is also a conscious effort to reach out to communities through the programme of free “City Voices” events, including a brand new family day on 9th September.
EEncouraging ncouraging e everyone veryone to to find find out out more more a about bout their their o own wn h history istory The main aim of City Voices is to encourage everyone to find out more about their own history and the city’s. Free activities include courses on how to trace your family history, learning to read old handwriting or finding your street and how it has changed over the years – using digital technology. For m o re i n fo r m a t i o n please visit www.gloucesterhistoryfestival.co.uk or pick up a copy of the History Festival programme from the Tourist Information Centre in Southgate Street. And if anybody says to you that Gloucester doesn’t promote its history, pick up a copy for them too! @ @cllrpauljames cllrpauljames

nd-17th SSeptember eptember FFESTIVAL ESTIVAL 22nd-17th GGLOUCESTER LOUCESTER DAY DAY 11.00 Mock Mayor of Barton’s Parade This parade is intentionally comical filled with larger than life Gloucester Characters, traditional costumes, entertainers, music and above all FUN. The parade winds its way around the streets (see below) and ends with a Tongue in cheek mayor making ceremony in the presence of the real Mayor and Sherriff of Gloucester. Gifts are exchanged and the new Mayor of Barton is invited to address his public. The Parade starts in Eastgate Street close to Boots, travels up to The Cross and continues down Westgate Street. The Parade turns right along St John’s Lane to Northgate Street, before passing The Cross where the Mock Mayor Making ceremony takes place, just past St Michael’s Tower on Southgate Street.
11.20 Mock Mayor Making Ceremony The fun and entertaining Mock Mayor Making ceremony takes place at The Cross with amazing costumes and characters. The Parade then continues to St Mary de Crypt Church.
12.00 Thanksgiving Service Gloucester Day Thanksgiving service at St Mary de Crypt Church. Everyone is invited to attend this free service.
14.00 Gloucester Day Parade The second parade of the day is a far more formal affair; involving hundreds of participants led by The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Gloucester. The parade is the finest example of community cohesion in the city today, with hundreds of people, young and old, representing their own social or community groups, parading to show that they are proud of their city. Interspersed between each group are wonderful bands from the county and further afield which create a spectacle through the city streets. The Parade departs from Constitution Walk (behind City Museum) to Eastgate Street, following the ‘Via Sacra’ paving through Queen’s Walk , before turning left into Eastgate Street. The Parade continues past The Cross and down Westgate Street, before turning right into College Green. The procession makes its way into Northgate Street via St John’s Lane and up to The Cross, before continuing along Southgate Street to Brunswick Baptist Church.
Siege of Gloucester The Siege of Gloucester, during the English Civil War, took place from 10th August to 5th September 1643, between the defending Parliamentarian garrison of Gloucester and the besieging army of King Charles I. The siege was ended by the relieving 15,000 strong Parliamentarian army led by the Earl of Essex . The Royalist forces withdrew, after heavy casualties. By the end of the siege, the city had only three barrels of gunpowder left for its defence.
Retribution W h e n C h a r l e s I I re t u r n e d to t h e t h r o n e i n 1 6 6 0 , h e punished Gloucester by having its city walls torn down.
The king also reduced the city by moving Barton outside the city limits and not under the control of the Gloucester Mayor. Barton elected a ‘mock mayor ’ to poke fun at Gloucester.
Commemoration Gloucester Day – organised by the city’s very own Town Crier, Alan Myatt – commemorates these events with Parades and a Mock Mayor making ceremony. Throughout the day the city streets are filled with stalls, stages, live music, dance and frivolity. The city centre celebrates its history, heritage and particular brand of humour and this creates a truly special atmosphere where residents and visitors unite and are proud of all things ‘Gloucester’.

Well, whatever your situation, the good news is that you can reduce your carbon footprint and help wildlife by spending some time outdoors.

Dragonflies are fascinating creatures. They have an appearance that is beautiful and slightly creepy in equal measure. They come in an array of colours and have two pairs of transparent wings that shimmer in the sunlight, as well as six spider-like legs and two huge, alien like eyes. The UK’s longest dragonfly species is the golden-ringed dragonfly, which has stripes much like a wasp and makes quite a noisy hum due to its size but, like all dragonflies, it is harmless as long as you are not a small insect! Dragonflies can be split into two subgroups: dragonflies and damselflies. Damselflies are smaller and slighter. They stay around water and when not i n f l i g h t t h ey re s t t h e i r w i n g s a l o n g their body.. Their eyes are positioned on each side of their head. Dragonflies meanwhile are larger and stronger f l i e r s s o c a n b e fo u n d f u r t h e r f ro m water. These These iinsects nsects h hung ung o out ut with w ith tthe he d dinosaurs! inosaurs! Dragonflies have been around for millions of years and they haven’t changed much in that time, although pre-historic dragonflies had much larger wingspans. It ’s testament to w h a t a m a z i n g i n s e c t s t h ey a re t h a t they have been on earth so long, and it ’s a great way to get the kids interested by telling them that these insects hung out with the dinosaurs! The life cycle of the dragonfly starts when the female lays eggs either on the water ’s surface or into plant material. The eggs hatch into nymphs
that live under the water where they eat live prey and moult their skin 5-14 times before they are fully grown. The nymph, on average, spends one to two years developing under the water. When temperature and daylight hours are right , the nymph crawls up vegetation and the miracle of emergence occurs. It takes a couple of weeks for a dragonfly to fully mature, during which time they develop their flying skills. It is worth taking time to watch a dragonfly in flight as they are amazing fliers – they even fly backwards! The mature adult will then mate, which is done as they fly in tandem. Many of our dragonflies are considered rare. They are suffering a l o ss o f h a b i t a t a n d a re s e n s i t i v e t o climate change. The garden pond can help as long as it is a wildlife pond, as fish prey on dragonfly nymphs. Something else we can all do to help is to purchase peat-free compost, as peat bogs provide a habitat for dragonflies. S o k e e p a n eye o u t fo r t h e s e amazing insects. If we are lucky with warm weather there is a chance to watch them in action before the temperatures drop. Quirky Quirky tips tips ffor or yyour our kkitchen itchen I have been travelling around a bit this month and have been staying at friends’ and family members’ homes. Whilst exploring, I’ve noticed how everyone’s kitchen has a different feel. Some have a very clean and modern feel, whilst others have a homely, rustic feel. In this article, I am going to offer a few tips to spice up your kitchen! A few of the tips I’m going to give have been inspiration I have taken from other people’s homes. 1 Firstly, an overhanging rack for your pots and pans is something that I feel works nicely when giving the kitchen a homely feel. Not only is it practical, but it’s a look that is a little bit different and gives the kitchen a bit of an practical and quirky, something edge. which we can all get ‘on board’ with. 2 Another interesting idea that I spotted was having a multi3 If you’re intrigued by growing purpose counter top. The top herbs and little indoor plants, a was a thick wood which you cute idea would be to plant could use as a chopping board! them in mugs. This way you can An interesting and different idea, have lots of little plants all which I liked very much. Again, around the kitchen, not looking at all out of place. 4 For our DIY section this month, I will be taking you through how to make a hanging fruit basket. These can look super cool in a home, especially a white kitchen. It’s simple and adds a splash of colour to your kitchen. Firstly,, you will need: • A hook/rail or anything that you can hang your basket on • A wire basket • Thick string Cut the string to the desired length and weave it through the wire b a s k e t h a n d l e s , m a k i n g s u re t o k e e p t h e s a m e l e n g t h o n b ot h sides. Flexible Flexible W Working orking It started years ago as a perk for hard-working, longserving staff, who wanted to start and finish early or late; it was known as ‘flexi-time’ and was popular particularly amongst office staff. Nobody looked at it as a business tool; it was simply a reward for a select few. There wasn’t (and still isn’t) any requirement to say yes, but how many employers faced with what is a genuine and reasonable request would turn it down?

Maybe they should go as far as introducing opportunities for flexible working to their staff rather than wait until they are asked. It’s probably easier for a small business than a larger one, as a small employer can be flexible on an individual basis and has greater scope to reorganise his/her work flow around the fact that employees are not going to be there from nine to five every day of the working week .

There are catches too to people not working regular hours or not being in the office for all of their contracted hours. Availability to callers and visitors can often be managed, but there’s not an employer in the land who wouldn’t admit to having at least a grain of doubt as to whether distractions away from the office prevent the flexible-working employee from putting in a ‘full shift’. And then there’s the challenge of technology and the frustration of your PC or other device not doing what it is supposed to all the time, or of the kids using up the b r o a d b a n d w i d t h a s s o o n a s t h e y a r e h o m e f ro m school. It’s impossible to create a ‘perfect world’, but helping everybody to be happy in their work and to balance work and ‘life’ successfully can only be a good thing.

Olympic O lympic sstar tar a and nd a w world orld cchampion hampion Richard Phelps knew from the age of six that he wanted to be a modern pentathlete. That was when he saw his uncle Ro b e r t P h e l p s t a k i n g p a r t i n t h e sport in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico and even at that tender age he knew it was for him. “I remember being allowed to stay up to watch the opening ceremony,” the Gloucester-born Phelps said. “We watched it on a black and white TV and I spotted my uncle walking round on the track . “I thought at the time that I’d like some of that.” Robert Phelps was to have a big influence on his nephew’s career, a career that saw him compete in four Olympics – winning a team bronze in 1988 – being crowned world champion in 1993 and winning national titles by the bucketload. Robert was no mean modern pentathlete himself, competing at three Olympics from 1964 to 1972. He was introduced to the sport by Hungarian migrant Josef Buszco, who fled to this country in the late 1950s following the invasion of his country

by the Soviet Union. Buszco had been a decent modern pentathlete in his home country and when he arrived in Gloucester he told anyone and everyone about the beauty of a sport that involved five disciplines – running, shooting, swimming, horse riding and fencing. Two of those who listened were Robert and his brother John, who was Richard’s dad. Together they formed the Spartan Modern Pentathlon Club and while the amount of time John could give to the sport was restricted by family and work of rugby and they understand how he wants us to play.” The club finished fourth last season and McNeil added: “We’ve got a nucleus of good young players at the club.”

And although he did not enjoy the same success as his nephew, he was one of the driving forces as Richard took modern pentathlon to a new level in this country. “It was my uncle who got me into modern pentathlon,” said Richard, now 56. “By the age of nine I was swimming, running and horseriding, and by the age of 12 I’d started fencing and shooting. “You need someone to show you the ropes and my uncle was great for me. It was a lot of hard work . I was naturally talented at running and swimming but that was it.” All the hard work paid off, of course, with the 1993 world title win an obvious highlight. “That was pretty special,” he said, “because it was an all Gloucester team. My uncle was coaching me and Martin Dawe, who was another former modern pentathlete, was my team manager.” Full story online. believes the club have what it takes to make a concerted bid for the South West One East title in 2017/18. Burns Burns is is ready ready ffor or ffresh resh cchallenge hallenge B i l l y t h e K i d i s a k i d n o m o re . Gloucester fly-half Billy Burns turned 23 in the summer and last season he t r u l y c a m e of a g e i n a c h e r r y a n d white shirt. He had long come out of the shadow of big brother Freddie, of course, but in the season just gone he w re s te d t h e n u m b e r 1 0 s h i r t f r o m m a ny t i m es capped Wales international James Hook and went on to produce some excellent performances, most notably against La Rochelle in the European Challenge Cup semi-final. This season he faces a new challenge to his recently acquired status as the club’s number one p l ay m a k e r i n t h e s h a p e o f n e w signing Owen Williams. about another Welshman, Hook , who left the club at the end of last season to join Ospreys. “Hooky was great for me,” he said. “I learned so much from him and I’m sure he’ll do really well in Wales.” It was that performance in La Rochelle that really made people sit up and take notice of Burns. To score all 16 of his side’s points – Gloucester won 16 -14 – at the business end of a big European competition is something that not too many manage. His points haul included an outstanding interception try and he admitted: “That sort of game is what you always dream about. The key for me now is to do it more consistently.” Burns has always made it clear that
h e s e e s h i m s e l f a s a 1 0, a n d t h e arrival of new head coach Johan Ackermann may have an immediate positive impact on his game. “I can play full-back but I see myself as a fly-half,” he said. “I think there could be a slight change to the way we play this season. He likes to play an exciting brand of rugby and keep the ball in hand which is how I like to play.” B ot h B u r n s a n d W i l l i a m s w i l l n e e d to be on top of their games, of course, if Gloucester are to start fulfilling their potential after too many seasons of under-achievement. Four bottom half finishes in the Premiership in the last four seasons have tested the patience of even the most loyal members of the Kingsholm faithful, but Burns is sure better times are just around the corner. “I think a top six finish is definitely on this season,” he said. “We’ve got a stronger squad than last season. We’re aiming high. No one was happy with where we finished last season. “The European cup final defeat was also hard to take but the experience will make us a better side. “We really are very close to being a top side, but we’ve got to find a way of turning narrow defeats into narrow wins. It’s been a problem for three or four years but it ’s one we’re determined to solve.” Full story online.
