Take the custard out of the fridge, stir, then spoon into the pastry case and smooth with a spatula. Top with the rhubarb, brush a little syrup on top, then sprinkle over the pistachios.

All All ccreatures reatures great great aand nd ssmall mall A few weeks ago I was greeted by a frog on the front doorstep of the vet clinic. I’m pretty sure he wasn’t lining up for a consult and was just sheltering from the elements, but I relocated him to the undergrowth before any larger patients coming to visit me had a chance to discover him. Morning consultations were full of the normal cat and dog problems followed by surgery on a labrador to remove a benign growth, extraction of some rotten teeth in an elderly siamese cat , castration of a randy rabbit , and X-rays on a lame spaniel. At lunchtime I checked on Henry the tortoise who is still sleeping through the last of winter’s cold days and will soon be waking. He has only lost 50 grams of weight, which is perfectly acceptable for five months of brumination (tortoise hibernation), so no need to cut his sleep short this year.

The Charlton Kings Vet Centre is fully equipped with a sterile operating theatre, digital radiography, ultrasonography and laboratory equipment. Drop in and have a look around. You will see many of the same friendly faces from our main surgery at Dragon Vet Centre. You can book your visits and pick up pet supplies, food or medications at either surgery if it’s more convenient.

In the afternoon I waded through the traffic making their way into the Cheltenham races. Although I get to admire the thoroughbreds trotting past our main clinic, I wasn’t needed on the racecourse. However, several of our vets were on hand to deal with any horse issues that may have arisen (hopefully nothing too serious). Patch up the odd injury, check any horses that have pulled up sore after they’ve raced, and collect urine samples from the winners to make sure no one was cheating! In my later consultation session, amongst all the usual vaccinations and check-ups, I prescribed some mite treatment for a snake, trimmed a budgerigar’s beak and advised an owner on how to deal with their senile terrier. It seemed like a rather unexciting day in the grand scheme of things but looking back I saw dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, rabbits, horses and an amphibian. Just another average day in the life of a veterinarian.

The weather is becoming milder (hopefully) and the days longer, and we have the promising summer months stretching before us. T h i s i s a b i g p ro b l e m a s wildflower meadows are extremely valuable in offering a diverse set of habitats for various species. Our bees, birds and butterflies, as well as many other types of wildlife, rely on wildflowers to support their survival. There are a few things to consider when planting your wildflower area so it’s worth looking at the wealth of information available online from organisations such as Friends of the Earth, the RHS and the RSPB. If planting wildflowers is something you don’t have time for then another option is to just choose a section of your garden that you can leave to grow wild. Or, if you fancy a break f ro m l aw n m ow i n g d u t i e s , t h e n l e t the whole area go wild! You may be surprised what appears both in terms o f p l a n t s a n d i n s e c t s . The Year Ahead As we move forward into the next financial year, we are looking at a period of change within the Parish. Our Clerk will be off to pastures new at the end of July, so we are now starting the process of appointing a new C l e r k . I f a n yo n e t h i n k s t h e y h av e w h a t i t t a k e s a n d wishes to be considered for this interesting and challenging position, please log your interest with the Parish Office and we will send you an information pack once it is available later in the month. May, of course, will see the four-yearly election for Members of the Parish Council. Following the election, there will be a short period while the new Members get to grips with their new roles. This year there will be 17 positions available, so if anyone is interested in becoming a Parish Councillor they will need to let the office know straight away. In the meantime, the existing team will be pressing on with progressing the next phase, year two, of our Parish Plan. The Council has agreed a total Budget for 2018/19 of just over £100,000, which will be met by the Parish Precept , plus additional income from a l l o t m e n t re n t s a n d h i r i n g o u t t h e S t a n to n H a l l a n d Conference Room. We already have funding in place to enable us to proceed with easy-access plots and a new toilet on part of our allotment estate. Other larger and more challenging projects that we are committed to within our Parish Plan will be funded by a mixture of loans and grants.

In the evening at this time of year I often treat myself to a double cleanse, which frankly can make a huge difference. I exfoliate a minimum of once a week , but through winter into spring I try for two exfoliations so I know any good moisture I am putting on my face and neck will be well absorbed. However,, water can be used to improve health in a very different way! Once you have enough of it (usually confined to a pool like structure or natural basin), exercising in water has a huge benefit for our bodies and on our health!

Outdoor-based swimming can be good for this; the water often feels great even when the temperature outside is cooler. Outdoor pools are generally heated up to 26°C . Alongside keeping cooler, swimming outside gives the extra benefit of clean, open air and added vitamin D from the sun light, which does come even through clouds!

Not necessarily on the floor crossed legged, but simply sharing a space with like-minded others and truly sharing the space? The recent upsurge in Women’s Circles and Men’s groups has shown that circle time is not just for babies. When we become parents, we sometimes feel a lack of community and belonging in our lives, and circle style groups are one way to overcome this isolation. I personally run a Red Tent Gathering once a m o n t h , b u t y o u m i g h t p re fe r a weekly coffee morning, a walking group or even a knitting circle. Study-life Study-life b balance alance Studying is stressful. For some students it can be tempting to spend ev e r y m i n u te o f t h e d ay s t u d y i n g , which often leads to burnout and a negative impact on their overall grades. Don’t let this be you. It’s so important to achieve a study-life balance in order to maximise efficiency, and it could be easier than you think .

P Plan lan a and nd set set g goals oals Organisation is essential. Plan out and set goals for your study sessions w h i l s t s c h e d u l i n g i n t i m e fo r relaxation; you’ll be able to enjoy a break knowing you’ve got your work d o n e . extremely valuable thing to do. Working for hours on end without some time out will lead to you feeling demotivated with a lack of focus, as our brains switch off after a while. It’s good to take a break every hour or hour and a half. It will lead to you feeling refreshed, allowing you to have a higher level of productivity, energy and concentration. It ’s important that you’re disciplined with your breaks however, sticking to a b o u t 1 5 o r 2 0 m i n u te s i n l e n g t h , with a longer break every few hours. During your breaks, focus on completely switching off and relaxing for a bit in a way that works

for you. This could be going for a walk in the fresh air, meditation or reading a book . Spending time on social media is fine, just be careful to keep an eye on how long you’ve been scrolling for.

Maintain M aintain a h healthy ealthy a attitude ttitude ttowards owards studying studying Spending time with your family and friends and carrying on doing the things you’re passionate about will also help you maintain a healthy attitude towards studying. It will reduce your stress levels and help you avoid reaching burnout, leaving yo u w i t h a p o s i t i ve m i n d s e t . John John H Hunt unt h has as d done one sso om much uch ffor or ffootball ootball Weekends without football – or cricket in the summer – don’t work too well for John Hunt. That ’ss not to say he doesn’t like spending time with his good lady, Debbie, of course he does, it ’s just that he needs his sporting fix come the end of the week . And the 55-year-old has been getting that sporting fix , largely through football, for well over 40 years even though Mrs Hunt has no interest in the game at all. He has played, managed, coached and helped to administer the game at all levels around Cheltenham and beyond, and is one of those unsung heroes who works extremely hard to make football available to anyone and everyone who wants to play it. These days he is heavily involved on the Cheltenham Football League’s committee as well as helping to run Bishop’s Cleeve III, who play in

When The Local Answer tracked him down, the one-time Gloucester wing was in Argentina tending to polo business, the sport from which he has made his living since hanging up his rugby boots some 10 years or so ago.

Division One of that league. “Yes, you could say that football has been a big part of my life,” he chuckled. “I started playing when I was 10 or 11 at Whaddon Junior School.” He also went on to play at Oakley Secondary School before progressing into adult football. “I used to be a forward or winger,” h e s a i d . “ B u t a s I g ot o l d e r a n d slower I moved back .” And it ’s fair to say that the 42year-old former Cheltenham College pupil is a s g o o d at p o l o as he was at rugby, having been capped by E n g l a n d i n b ot h sports.

In his late teens work prevented Hunt from playing Saturday football in Cheltenham so he committed to Sunday football. Not that that was a bad alternative. “I played with Lokomotiv Bass alongside the likes of Sean Whelan, Gerry Oldham and Steve Cotterill,” he enthused. “When I started, they were called the Bass House after the pub that used to be in Alma Road.” So how did he get involved with them? “I knew Graham Brain who was the manager of Bass,” he said, “but he said I would have to have an interview because they were based in Hatherley and I was from Whaddon!” The interview obviously went very well because Hunt was signed on and was a regular in the team. Since then he has devoted a lifetime to football. Full story online. against Kent in Canterbury on Friday 13th April.

It’s a m It’s magnificent agnificent sseven even ffor or H Harrier arrier D Dave ave TTomlin omlin If Dave Tomlin’s mobile goes through to answer machine, you will get told that he’s “probably out running”. And in all likelihood that is exactly what the 45-year-old will be doing. If the health care practitioner isn’t at work , it ’s a fair bet that he’ll be out and about pounding the roads in and around Cheltenham. A n d t h e C h e l te n h a m H a r r i e r h a s even more reason for making sure he is in tip-top shape at this current time, because it ’s only a few short weeks until he takes part in this year ’s London Marathon. Not that he’s a novice when it comes to the iconic race, because w h e n t h e t a p e g o e s u p o n S u n d ay 22nd April it will be the seventh time that he has taken part. And familiarity certainly hasn’t lessened Tomlin’s love for the event. “It ’s the best in the world,” he enthused. “You get the chance to run in the same race as some of the greatest runners in the world. It’s an amazing event and the whole day is like a carnival.”

TTomlin omlin ffirst irst rran an tthe he LLondon ondon Marathon M arathon iin n1 1992 992 Tomlin, a Devonian who these days lives in Cheltenham, first ran the London Marathon in 1992. “I ran it with my mum and dad,” he laughed. “It was my dad who got me into running so I said, ‘Let ’s do it together’.” That is just one of 34 marathons that Tomlin has taken part in over the years, and some of the other places he has completed the 26.2-mile challenge include Venice, Budapest , Croatia and Ljubljana in Slovenia. “I’ve always liked pushing myself,” he said, “it ’s what I’ve always done. I don’t enjoy the pain so much after a marathon but I love the endorphins when you finish a race.” And Tomlin finishes those races in pretty good times too. His best marathon time was at Taunton in 2013 when he finished in two hours, 39 minutes, 39 seconds,

Dave Tomlin will be running his seventh London Marathon

which was just 20 seconds faster than his time in the London Marathon the same year. Five years on and he’s still very competitive – “I can still beat the youngsters,” he chuckled – but it’s not just beating the 20 -somethings that is motivating him to train hard in the build-up to this year ’s showpiece event. “I want to finish inside two hours, 45,” he said. “That ’s the qualifying t i m e fo r t h e A A c h a m p i o n s h i p c l u b runners at next year ’s London Marathon. “That means you run just behind the elite runners like Mo Farah.” And Tomlin reckons that his target time is more than achievable. “On recent form I can run a sub 2.45,” he said. Tomlin moved up to Cheltenham in June 2016 and it wasn’t long before he was spotted by the Harriers. “I was doing a few of the parkruns and winning them, so Andy Prophett said, ‘You’d better come and run for the Harriers’. I suppose I was headhunted!” Not that he’s got any regrets, of course, and he’s certainly been

impressed by how good the Harriers are as a club. “ T h ey a r e v e r y s t ro n g , ” h e s a i d . “Back at my club in Devon I was a top runner but I’m about 15th at the Harriers. “Mind you I do remind them that I’m older than them!” It’s clear that every step he takes is an enjoyable one for Tomlin whether he’s training or running. “Running is my life,” he said. “It ’s w h at m a k es m e t i c k . A n d i f everything has gone well, then I can go and have a beer.” So what advice would Tomlin have for the runners from Gloucestershire – and there are quite a few – who are taking part in the London Marathon for the first time? “ T h e b e s t t h i n g t o d o i s to s t ay mentally strong,” he said. “Keep taking the fluids and eat any food that you are used to. But most importantly just go out and enjoy it.” Unlike many runners, Tomlin won’t have his name attached to his running vest when he runs round the capital.

“I “I n need eed tto o ffocus” ocus” Many of the spectators that line the race shout out a runner ’s name to encourage them to keep on going but Tomlin says that’s not for him. “I need to focus,” he said, “I don’t want to be looking around to see who is calling out for me.” It’s that kind of focus that has made Tomlin such a competitive runner over the years and he says he’ll keep on running “until my knees give up”. If and when that happens there are st i l l ot h e r s p o r t s h e c a n p u r s u e of course. One of those is cycling and he’s a big fan. “I’m a member of Cheltenham & County Cycling Club,” he said. “I go out on Saturday mornings and cycle 60 or 70 miles. I love it.” It goes without saying that that ’s plenty of miles. And while running is still clearly his first love, in years to come his answer machine may say “probably out cycling!”

IIn nT The he Garden Garden with w ith JJulia ulia Smith Smith

Get Get g going oing iin n yyour our g garden arden Spring has definitely come now – hurrah! This is the time of year that everything starts getting busy again for the gardener – weeding, sowing, mowing , etc. We have had such a long winter that everyone is raring to get going. It is also often a time of moving into a new home, or even into a first home, and the excitement o f s t a r t i n g to g a rd e n fo r t h e f i r s t time!

FFeed eed ssoft oft ffruit ruit S t a r t fe e d i n g t h e s o f t f r u i t i n t h e garden – strawberries and raspberries can benefit from a balanced general fertilizer such as blood, fish and bone o r G ro w m o r e a p p l i e d a t a b o u t 7 0 g p e r s q u a re m e t r e. T h i s w i l l s u p p l y p o t a ss i u m ( k ) fo r f l owe r a n d f r u i t p ro d u c t i o n , n i t r o g e n ( n ) f o r fo l i a g e and phosphorus (p) for strong roots. April could be a good time to buy w i n t e r f l ow e r i n g t re e s a n d s h r u b s whose price may be reduced in garden centres – this will give you a good show next winter. This is also a good time to plant evergreens into well-prepared soil with a balanced fertilizer added.

G ive e vergreens a Give evergreens thorough w atering thorough watering T h e o l d r h y m e t a l ks o f A p r i l showers, but April can also be really hot and dry. If this is the case, care w i l l h a ve to b e t a k e n w i t h a n y shrubs and trees planted in the last few months. Evergreens don’t show any sign of drought until they are in a really bad way so care must be t a k e n to g i v e t h e m a t h o r o u g h watering once a week until they are a year old and should have a strong root system. Remember, thorough watering means a good can full of water per plant , and mulching around the soil will keep the water in (although don’t go right up to the stem as it can lead to rotting).

Chillies are easy to grow once germinated and look decorative even if you don’t like using them in cooking! Sow chillies in April, two s e e d s i n a s h a l l ow p o t , a n d i f p o s s i b l e g i ve t h e m a l i t t l e b o t to m heat just to germinate them, keeping them indoors at 12-25 degrees and plant out in mid-June. Good varieties are ‘Jalapeno’ and ‘Lewi Scotch’.

These words have been repeated like a mantra for a simple way to reduce our waste, a n d ye t t h e f i r s t t wo a re l a rg e l y ignored. If you’re wondering what e l s e yo u c a n d o b e s i d e s re c yc l i n g yo u r p l a s t i c , m e t a l a n d c a rd b o a r d , then here are some simple tips to do more reducing and reusing.

Reduce Reduce A simple way to reduce the amount of plastic you throw away or recycle is to not buy it in the first place. Yes, a b i g b a g o f c a r ro t s fo r 4 7 p s e e m s like a bargain, but if you just buy the two that you need, they’ll only cost you 10p a n d yo u c a n a vo i d t h e p l a s t i c bag. Buy loose f r u i t s a n d ve g e tables, and don’t be afraid to buy the ones that look a little strange or misshapen – they’re p e r fe c t l y e d i b l e b u t m o s t l i k e l y to g o to landfill. farmer’s market, where the foods are less likely to be grown commercially, meaning they will have travelled a much shorter distance by the time they’re on your dinner plate. W h i l s t t h e b a g fo r l i fe s c h e m e i n s u p e r m a r k et s h a s p a i d of f i n massively decreasing single use bags, it’s not as good if you buy one every time you go to the supermarket and forget to ever take them b a c k a g a i n . A b e t te r o p t i o n i s a canvas bag: whilst these are more expensive, costing up to a few pounds each, they are much more durable and won’t rip apart when the corner of a pizza box pokes through t h e m l i k e t h e i r p l a st i c counterparts. Cut out things like sachets of sauces a n d o p t fo r g l a ss bottles when you can – n o t o n l y a r e t h ey cheaper per kilogram, but they ’re also much better to recycle and do n ot c a u s e a s m u c h h a r m to t h e e n v i ro n ment during production.

Reuse Reuse Buying a reusable water bottle allows yo u to c u t o u t a l l t h e l o o s e p l a s t i c o n e s i n t h e b a c k o f yo u r c a r a n d means that they don’t all go to landfill when you throw them in the nearest waste bin. Plastic ziplock bags d o n o t h av e to b e s i n g l e u s e i te m s either, especially when used for storing things in the freezer or cupboard. Rinse them with water, dry them and use them next time you need them. Use old cereal boxes to make a new magazine holder, and old plastic fruit holders to store small items like packet mixes in your pantry which would otherwise fall over. Big ice cream tubs can be repurposed as sewing kits after being washed t h ro u g h , o r t h e y c a n h o l d y o u r sandwiches or last night ’s leftovers. Implementing small things means less waste thrown away, financial savings and a happier planet!

O Old ld TTenners enners “Hi George, how’s it going? Did you manage to get rid o f a l l yo u r o l d te n n e r s a t t h e e n d o f l a s t m o n t h ? ” “Come on John, you know I was never going to ditch Pavarotti and his mate. That old vinyl will b e w o r t h a fo r t u n e o n e d ay ” . “ N o George, tenners not tenors! They went out of date at the end of February”. “But I’d only just recovered from changing my old £1 coins into something resembling a threepenny bit.” T h e o l d £ 1 0 n o te ( t h e one with Charles Darwin on it) can no longer be used as legal tender. If you still have any, y o u c a n t r y p a y i n g t h e m i n t o yo u r bank account, but there is no guarantee that they ’ll be accepted. The official line is that you have to exchange them via the Bank of England, which means either a trip to London or sending your money by post. If you choose to do that, remember to s e n d i t v i a re g i s te r e d p o s t o r s o m e o t h e r v e r s i o n where it’s insured.

O Over ver £ £2billion 2billion w worth orth of of old old tenners tenners sstill till iin n ccirculation! irculation! Incredibly, estimates by the Bank of England suggest that there were over £2billion worth of old tenners still in circulation when they ceased to be legal tender. Yes, £2billion!! That represents over a quarter of the total £10 notes in circulation. They have been coming back at a rate of £85m a week . “I suppose the scores will be next to go?” “Surely you haven’t been hoarding manuscripts with your vinyl?” “No not musical scores, old twenties!” “Oh I see, yes, give it a couple of years and I’m sure we’ll have plastic ones of those too”. George is right , the existing £20 note is due to be replaced by a plastic version in 2020. If you want the answer to the pub quiz question in the meantime, they will carry a portrait of the landscape artist, J M W Turner. Britain joins a growing list of countries who have exchanged old paper notes for more durable polymer ones. Apparently Australia led the way as far back as 1988. As well as being more durable, the new notes are supposed to be more difficult to copy. If you’re a fan of paper notes, Money Matters has some good news for you. There are no plans to replace the existing £50 one!
