For the roasted rhubarb: Heat the oven to 190°C (170°C fan/gas mark 5). Line up the rhubarb pieces in a roasting tin and sprinkle over the sugar, vanilla bean paste and orange juice. Roast for 15 minutes or until the rhubarb has softened but is still holding its shape and has a lovely pink syrup. Remove from the oven and leave to cool. Take the custard out of the fridge, stir, then spoon into the pastry case and smooth with a spatula. Top with the rhubarb, brush a little syrup on top, then sprinkle over the pistachios.

Aquatic Aquatic EExercise xercise It might be said that the main benefit of water is for hydration – keeping our bodies ticking over, supplying our tiniest cells to our brain and blood. However,, water can be used to improve health in a very different way! Once you have enough of it (usually confined to a pool like structure or natural basin), exercising in water has a huge benefit for our bodies and on our health!

Outdoor-based swimming can be good for this; the water often feels great even when the temperature outside is cooler. Outdoor pools are generally heated up to 26°C . Not necessarily on the floor crossed legged, but simply sharing a space with like-minded others and truly sharing the space? The recent upsurge in Women’s Circles and Men’s groups has shown that circle time is not just for babies. When we become parents, we sometimes feel a lack of community and belonging in our lives, and circle style groups are one way to overcome this isolation. I personally run a Red Tent Gathering once a m o n t h , b u t y o u m i g h t p re fe r a weekly coffee morning, a walking group or even a knitting circle. Wildlife W ildlife M Matters atters with with Caroline Caroline Shelley Shelley

LLive ive llife ife o on n tthe he w wild ild sside ide As we come into April the changes we can see outside in terms of our wildlife are rapid. The weather is becoming milder (hopefully) and the days longer, and we have the promising summer months stretching before us. It ’s a good time to make plans for the garden and if you would like to do something in your garden to help wildlife this summer then you could try planting some wildflowers.

TThey hey o offer ffer a d diverse iverse set set of of h habitats abitats ffor or vvarious arious sspecies pecies Since the 1930s the number of wildflower meadows has seriously d e c l i n e d . T h i s i s a b i g p ro b l e m a s wildflower meadows are extremely valuable in offering a diverse set of habitats for various species. Our bees, birds and butterflies, as well as many other types of wildlife, rely on wildflowers to support their survival. As our wildflower meadows have decreased in number through the years, road verges have offered somewhere for wildflowers to grow instead. However, the continuous c u t t i n g o f t h e s e v e r g e s p r ev e n t s t h e m f ro m f l o u r i s h i n g . O u r n a t i ve wildflowers are struggling but there are things we can do.

Luckily you don’t have to have a spare meadow at hand to grow wildflowers – you can grow them on a s m a l l s c a l e a s we l l . W i l d f l owe r s g row b e s t i n l ow- n u t r i e n t s o i l a n d , once the area is planted, they are pretty low mainten-ance. Patience is required though, as it won’t look its best that first year. Instead it will evolve over time as species establish. There are a few things to consider when planting your wildflower area so it’s worth looking at the wealth of information available online from organisations such as Friends of the Earth, the RHS and the RSPB. If planting wildflowers is something you don’t have time for then another option is to just choose a section of your garden that you can leave to grow wild. Or, if you fancy a break f ro m l aw n m ow i n g d u t i e s , t h e n l e t the whole area go wild! You may be surprised what appears both in terms o f p l a n t s a n d i n s e c t s . They are running a campaign to encourage councils to manage road verges in a way that benefits wildflowers whilst keeping roads safe for motorists. Reduce Reduce A simple way to reduce the amount of plastic you throw away or recycle is to not buy it in the first place. John John Hunt Hunt h has as d done one sso om much uch ffor or ffootball ootball quite a good defender.” In his late teens work prevented Hunt from playing Saturday football in Cheltenham so he committed to Sunday football. Not that that was a bad alternative. “I played with Lokomotiv Bass alongside the likes of Sean Whelan, Gerry Oldham and Steve Cotterill,” h e e n t h u s e d . “ W h e n I s t a r te d , t h e club were called the Bass House after the pub that used to be in Alma Road.” So how did he get involved with them? “I knew Graham Brain who was the manager of Bass,” he said, “but he said I would have to have an interview because they were based in Hatherley and I was from Whaddon!” The interview obviously went very well because Hunt was signed on and since those days he has devoted a lifetime to football. Full story online.

Weekends without football – or cricket in the summer – don’t work too well for John Hunt. That ’ss not to say he doesn’t like spending time with his good lady, Debbie, of course he does, it ’ss just that he needs his sporting fix come the end of the week . And the 55-year-old has been getting that sporting fix , largely through football, for well over 40 years even though Mrs Hunt has no interest in the game at all. He has played, managed, coached and helped to administer the game at all levels around Cheltenham and beyond, and is one of those unsung heroes who works extremely hard to make football available to anyone and everyone who wants to play it. These days he is heavily involved on the Cheltenham Football League’ss committee as well as helping to run Bishop’s Cleeve III, who play in Division One of that league.

Yes, you could say that football has been a big part of my life,” he chuckled. “I started playing when I was 10 or 11 at Whaddon Junior School.” He also went on to play at Oakley Secondary School before progressing into adult football. “I used to be a forward or winger,” h e s a i d . “ B u t a s I g ot o l d e r a n d slower I moved back and I became

A n d w h i l e t h at m ay b e o bv i o u s – Gloucestershire failed to qualify for the knockout stages of either white ball Richard Dawson competition and never really threatened to be promotion contenders in the county championship – it’s how you go about bringing about that improvement that is all important. For Dawson, hard work and players consistently backing themselves in the heat of battle is key to Gloucestershire’s chances of enjoying a successful campaign which gets under way with a four-day County Championship Division Two game against Kent in Canterbury on Friday 13th April.

W h e n J e ss E l b e c k to o k a c a l l f ro m Gloucester players Tom Hudson and Charlie Beckett last summer, she wasn’t too sure what to expect. The duo had not long since taken Jess Elbeck over as coaches of Cheltenham Ladies rugby team, a setup that Elbeck had been an important part of for the previous three seasons. But if Elbeck was nervous, she needn’t have been. “They asked me if I’d like to be captain this season,” said Elbeck , “I really wasn’t expecting it . I’d only been playing rugby since 2014. “I felt 10ft tall and it was a bit of an honour.” And since taking on the role Elbeck and Cheltenham have hardly taken a backward step.

And it ’s not just any marathon because on Sunday 22nd April she’ll be lining up in Blackheath with 40,000 o t h e r r u n n e r s fo r t h e s t a r t o f t h e London Marathon. “Yes, it’s all happened quite quickly,” chuckled mum-of-three Jenny. “I s t a r te d d o i n g a b i t o f r u n n i n g w h e n my youngest son was 18 months old. “I’d run a couple of miles just to get o u t of t h e h o u s e a n d l o s e a b i t of weight.” That was about three years ago. “I knew I needed to do something,” she continued. “I love food and I had to find a way of being able to keep on eating while not putting on weight! ‘After having kids, it can be hard for m u m s to f i n d a n y t i m e a t a l l fo r themselves let alone for fitness!

““A Am mile ile iiss a m mile!” ile!” “So I made it a priority to fit two or three 30 -minute runs into my week . W h a t ev e r h a p p e n e d , I s t u c k to m y plan. “ M e n t a l l y a n d p h y s i c a l l y I s l ow l y started to notice a difference. Running is a relatively easy sport to fit in, and it doesn’t matter, fast or slow, a mile is a mile! “Since I’ve been running I’ve toned up, lost weight and mentally feel better.” So how did Jenny, who is now 37, fit the running round her busy family life? “ I u s e d to g o o u t a t s i x i n t h e morning for half an hour,” she laughed. “Everyone in the house was a s l e e p w h e n I w e n t o u t a n d t h ey were still asleep when I got back . The run would set me up for the day.” It may only have been a couple of miles but it was a big step for former C l e e ve S c h o o l p u p i l J e n n y w h o h a d never previously done any running. But she soon found it was something she was half decent at and it wasn’t long before she started entering a few races. “I’ve done a few half marathons,”

she said with some pride. “I ran the Great North Run. There were about 50,000 runners and it was mental. “I finished in one hour, 54 minutes and it was really hilly as well. That surprised me. I never look at the details about a race, I just rock up.” Jenny, who lives in Bishops Norton, raised money for the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital children’s ward that day in Newcastle and when she heads t o t h e c a p i t a l i n a fe w w e e ks ’ time for her marathon challenge she’ll be running for Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice. “Sue Ryder Hospice have cared for a couple of dear friends of mine over the last few years and that’s what keeps me running when my body is crying to stop,” said Jenny. That ’s plenty of motivation to complete the 26.2-mile course, a l t h o u g h s h e i s u n d e r st a n d a b l y hesitant when asked what time she is hoping to go round in. “I don’t know,” she said, “I’m scared to say in case I don’t do it . The way I’m training I think I could do it in four hours but I’ll say four-and-a-half… I’ll give myself an extra half hour! “I just don’t know what my body will do on the day. I think I’ll just go for it and let the crowd carry me. “I’ve done a lot of training and stuck to t h e p l a n g i v e n t o m e b y r u n n i n g coach Kerry Newell.” That plan has seen Jenny running 30 miles a week . It’s hard work and she admits that she is looking forward to the big day. “The thing I’m most looking forward to is the feeling of accomplishment when I’ve completed the course,” she said. Jenny, who joined Tewkesbury Running Club six months or so ago, has really been bitten by the running bug. “I can’t sing the praises of running enough,” she said. “Marathon training is an enormous battle with your brain,” she said. “If you can ignore the voice in your brain

when you have done 15 miles, that is t h e k ey b e c a u s e t h e b o d y i s n o t designed naturally to run that far.” If hard work counts for anything J e n n y s h o u l d a l m o s t s k i p ro u n d t h e course in London.

But running is really addictive and I really enjoy fundraising.” Jenny ’s fundraising link is justgiving.com/fundraising/mrsjennygee

Get Get g going oing iin n yyour our g garden arden Spring has definitely come now – hurrah! This is the time of year that everything starts getting busy again for the gardener – weeding, sowing, mowing , etc. We have had such a long winter that everyone is raring to get going. It is also often a time of moving into a new home, or even into a first home, and the excitement o f s t a r t i n g to g a rd e n fo r t h e f i r s t time!

April could be a good time to buy w i n t e r f l ow e r i n g t re e s a n d s h r u b s whose price may be reduced in garden centres – this will give you a good show next winter. This is also a good time to plant evergreens into well-prepared soil with a balanced fertilizer added.

G ive e vergreens a Give evergreens thorough w atering thorough watering T h e o l d r h y m e t a l ks o f A p r i l showers, but April can also be really hot and dry. If this is the case, care w i l l h a ve to b e t a k e n w i t h a n y shrubs and trees planted in the last few months. Evergreens don’t show any sign of drought until they are in a really bad way so care must be t a k e n to g i v e t h e m a t h o r o u g h watering once a week until they are a year old and should have a strong root system. Remember, thorough watering means a good can full of water per plant , and mulching around the soil will keep the water in (although don’t go right up to the stem as it can lead to rotting).

Chillies are easy to grow once germinated and look decorative even if you don’t like using them in cooking! That old vinyl will b e w o r t h a fo r t u n e o n e d ay ” . “ N o George, tenners not tenors! They went out of date at the end of February”. “But I’d only just recovered from changing my old £1 coins into something resembling a threepenny bit.” T h e o l d £ 1 0 n o te ( t h e one with Charles Darwin on it) can no longer be used as legal tender. If you still have any, y o u c a n t r y p a y i n g t h e m i n t o yo u r bank account, but there is no guarantee that they ’ll be accepted. The official line is that you have to exchange them via the Bank of England, which means either a trip to London or sending your money by post. If you choose to do that, remember to s e n d i t v i a re g i s te r e d p o s t o r s o m e o t h e r v e r s i o n where it’s insured.

O Over ver £ £2billion 2billion w worth orth of of old old tenners tenners sstill till iin n ccirculation! irculation! Incredibly, estimates by the Bank of England suggest that there were over £2billion worth of old tenners still in circulation when they ceased to be legal tender. Yes, £2billion!! That represents over a quarter of the total £10 notes in circulation. They have been coming back at a rate of £85m a week . “I suppose the scores will be next to go?” “Surely you haven’t been hoarding manuscripts with your vinyl?” “No not musical scores, old twenties!” “Oh I see, yes, give it a couple of years and I’m sure we’ll have plastic ones of those too”. George is right , the existing £20 note is due to be replaced by a plastic version in 2020. If you want the answer to the pub quiz question in the meantime, they will carry a portrait of the landscape artist, J M W Turner. Britain joins a growing list of countries who have exchanged old paper notes for more durable polymer ones. Apparently Australia led the way as far back as 1988. As well as being more durable, the new notes are supposed to be more difficult to copy. If you’re a fan of paper notes, Money Matters has some good news for you. There are no plans to replace the existing £50 one!
