On a lightly floured surface, roll out the pastry to line a 12 x 36cm fluted tart tin. Using the rolling pin to help, drape the pastry into the tin, carefully lifting and pressing into the corners and edges. Roll your pin over the tin, cutting off the excess. Chill for 30 minutes or until the pastry is firm. Heat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan/gas mark 4). Line the tart with baking parchment , fill with baking beans and place on a tray. B r u s h t h e inside of the tart with the second egg yolk and return to the oven for one minute to set . This creates a seal, meaning the pastry will stay firmer for longer. Set aside to cool. For the roasted rhubarb: Heat the oven to 190°C (170°C fan/gas mark 5). Line up the rhubarb pieces in a roasting tin and sprinkle over the sugar, vanilla bean paste and orange juice. Roast for 15 minutes or until the rhubarb has softened but is still holding its shape and has a lovely pink syrup. Remove from the oven and leave to cool. Take the custard out of the fridge, stir, then spoon into the pastry case and smooth with a spatula. Top with the rhubarb, brush a little syrup on top, then sprinkle over the pistachios.

However, the stop start button for the R8 is on the steering wheel. Once pressed the aural sounds of the V10 hit your ears as it bursts into life. The drama begins. Driving out on the road the R8 is as tame as a normal everyday Audi. The steering isn’t heavy, pedal weights are lovely. It could easily be an everyday driver. This is a modern supercar. LLive ive llife ife o on n tthe he w wild ild sside ide As we come into April the changes we can see outside in terms of our wildlife are rapid. The weather is becoming milder (hopefully) and the days longer, and we have the promising summer months stretching before us. It ’s a good time to make plans for the garden and if you would like to do something in your garden to help wildlife this summer then you could try planting some wildflowers.
TThey hey o offer ffer a d diverse iverse set set of of h habitats abitats ffor or vvarious arious sspecies pecies Since the 1930s the number of wildflower meadows has seriously d e c l i n e d . T h i s i s a b i g p ro b l e m a s wildflower meadows are extremely valuable in offering a diverse set of habitats for various species. Our bees, birds and butterflies, as well as many other types of wildlife, rely on wildflowers to support their survival. As our wildflower meadows have decreased in number through the years, road verges have offered somewhere for wildflowers to grow instead. However, the continuous c u t t i n g o f t h e s e v e r g e s p r ev e n t s t h e m f ro m f l o u r i s h i n g . O u r n a t i ve wildflowers are struggling but there are things we can do.
Luckily you don’t have to have a spare meadow at hand to grow wildflowers – you can grow them on a s m a l l s c a l e a s we l l . Patience is required though, as it won’t look its best that first year. Instead it will evolve over time as species establish. There are a few things to consider when planting your wildflower area so it’s worth looking at the wealth of information available online from organisations such as Friends of the Earth, the RHS and the RSPB. If planting wildflowers is something you don’t have time for then another option is to just choose a section of your garden that you can leave to grow wild. Or, if you fancy a break f ro m l aw n m ow i n g d u t i e s , t h e n l e t the whole area go wild! You may be surprised what appears both in terms o f p l a n t s a n d i n s e c t s . Incredibly, estimates by the Bank of England suggest that there were over £2billion worth of old tenners still in circulation when they ceased to be legal tender. Yes, £2billion!! That represents over a quarter of the total £10 notes in circulation. They have been coming back at a rate of £85m a week . “I suppose the scores will be next to go?” “Surely you haven’t been hoarding manuscripts with your vinyl?” “No not musical scores, old twenties!” “Oh I see, yes, give it a couple of years and I’m sure we’ll have plastic ones of those too”. George is right , the existing £20 note is due to be replaced by a plastic version in 2020. If you want the answer to the pub quiz question in the meantime, they will carry a portrait of the landscape artist, J M W Turner. Britain joins a growing list of countries who have exchanged old paper notes for more durable polymer ones. Apparently Australia led the way as far back as 1988. As well as being more durable, the new notes are supposed to be more difficult to copy. If you’re a fan of paper notes, Money Matters has some good news for you. There are no plans to replace the existing £50 one!

W Why hy CCainscross ainscross h have ave p plenty lenty to to celebrate celebrate It ’s often said that a league table doesn’t lie and while that may be correct to a large degree, it doesn’t always tell the whole truth. A quick look at Gloucester Three finds Cainscross Rugby Club in the bottom half having lost a lot more than they have won this season. And while they would have liked the figure in the ‘W’ column to be slightly higher, the club that celebrate their 125th anniversary next year are, nevertheless, in pretty good shape. So says long-serving player Rob Hale, who also does more than his fair share off the field to ensure that the club continue to thrive in the 21st century. The 38-year-old prop first started playing for Cainscross 22 years ago and enjoys running out in the club’s amber and blue as much now as he did in the mid-90s. “It’s a great club,” said Hale. “The ethos is outstanding and we all look

Mind you, that still leaves her two shy of her dad, Fred, who ran the London Marathon four times after taking up running only in his 40s. FFrampton rampton uunited nited iin n aallll ways ways Frampton on Severn is one of those wonderfully old fashioned, yet beautiful, villages that help to make Gloucestershire the great county that it is. There’s the impressive village green t h a t b o a s t s t h r e e p o n d s, t h e t wo traditional pubs situated perfectly on the green and the thriving football club that play their home games just a long goal kick from the very heart of village life. And while Frampton is clearly right up there as one of the better places to visit in Gloucestershire, the football club, equally, are clearly one of the better clubs in the county. That ’s because the team ply their trade in the County League where they r u b s h o u l d e r s w i t h t h e l i k es of Hardwicke, Broadwell Amateurs and Stonehouse Town. “Yes, it ’s a strong division,” said Frampton United manager Steve Jackson. “It’s got a bit squeezed in the last few seasons because the criteria to get into the Hellenic League has got much tougher. “You need things like floodlights and we’re not in a position to fund floodlights. We’ve also got residents next to the ground and you have to respect them as well.” It means, certainly for the foreseeable future, that Frampton won’t be playing any higher than their current level and t h a t i s s o m e t h i n g t h a t J a c ks o n , w h o took over as manager at the start of the season, is very comfortable with. “We finished runners-up last season a n d t h a t w o u l d h av e b e e n g o o d enough to get us promoted,” he said, “ b u t ev e r y t h i n g m u s t b e s u s t a i n a b l e and it is for us in the County League.” Jackson was born and bred in Frampton – he lives in the village with h i s w i f e B e c k y a n d y o u n g d a u g h te r s Ava and Amelie – and his parents, Kevin and Anne, are still heavily involved with the football club. The club mean a lot to the family and o n e of t h e t h i n g s t h at p a r t i cu l a r l y pleases the new boss is that 12 of the 16-strong first-team squad are from the village. “That’s fantastic,” said Jackson, who explained that a big part of the reason for that was the club’s close relationship with Frampton Youth Football Club.
Frampton United play in the County League
“We’re separate entities but very c l o s e l y l i n k e d , ” J a c k s o n a d d e d . “ T h ey were created by chairman Ian Palmer who is a figurehead for football in the village.” And while Palmer may be Frampton’s ‘Mr Football’, Jackson isn’t too far behind, because the now 32-year-old played in the youth team’s first ever game back in the mid-90s. It soon became obvious that Jackson was a pretty decent footballer, good enough to be part of Bristol City ’s academy for two years before being released at the age of 16. H e re t u r n e d h o m e fo r a s p e l l w i t h Frampton before joining Hardwicke, where he won the County League in 2007/08 and then the Hellenic League Division One West. “In those days you didn’t need floodlights to get promoted,” he chuckled.
H His is footballing footballing ccareer areer w was as on on an an upward upward ccurve urve His footballing career was on an upward curve and he spent several years playing for Bishop’s Cleeve under Paul Collicutt in the Southern League, before returning to Frampton in 2015 “to play with my mates” after a short spell at Shortwood United. His experience of playing at a decent level has certainly not done him any harm since jumping into the Frampton United hot-seat. “I took over from Lee DriverDickerson who left to become assistant manager at Slimbridge,” explained Jackson. “He’d been manager for 10 years and was brilliant for the club, taking them from the Stroud League to the County League.” Driver-Dickerson and Jackson are good mates – they play cricket together
at the village cricket club which is just a big six-hit from the football ground. And while Jackson watched his pal operate at close quarters for a couple of seasons, he has also had his own experience of management to call on as well. “I managed Frampton Youth when I was 17,” he said. “I took a side from under-7s all the way through to under18s, so in many ways I was a natural successor to Lee.” Jackson still plays when needed but p re f e r s to g i ve t h e yo u n g e r p l aye r s game-time whenever he can. And quite a few of those young lads were part of the team that Jackson started in the Frampton Youth set-up all those years ago in the early noughties. So who are the players who are very m u c h t h e p re s e n t a n d f u t u re o f Frampton United? “Nathan Dennis,” said Jackson. “He’s a centre-half and he’s one of the best in the league. He’s 6ft 4in, tough and got a very talented left foot. “Manolo Marquez is our centremidfielder and he’s come through the village youth teams. He’s a brilliant success story. “Centre-forward Ryan Vincent has been scoring a goal a game. He’s Harry Kane-esque, he’s got great movement and is a great finisher. “Then there’s Matt Cook who has been with Frampton all the way through and can play right-back or right midfield. “And Liam O’Neill has been our captain for seven years. He’s a centreback and has only played for Frampton, as has Chris Bulley, a pacey, tricky leftwinger.” Full story online.

Get Get g going oing iin n yyour our g garden arden Spring has definitely come now – hurrah! This is the time of year that everything starts getting busy again for the gardener – weeding, sowing, mowing , etc. We have had such a long winter that everyone is raring to get going. If this is the case, care w i l l h a ve to b e t a k e n w i t h a n y shrubs and trees planted in the last few months. Evergreens don’t show any sign of drought until they are in a really bad way so care must be t a k e n to g i v e t h e m a t h o r o u g h watering once a week until they are a year old and should have a strong root system. Remember, thorough watering means a good can full of water per plant , and mulching around the soil will keep the water in (although don’t go right up to the stem as it can lead to rotting).
Chillies are easy to grow once germinated and look decorative even if you don’t like using them in cooking! These words have been repeated like a mantra for a simple way to reduce our waste, a n d ye t t h e f i r s t t wo a re l a rg e l y ignored. Reduce Reduce A simple way to reduce the amount of plastic you throw away or recycle is to not buy it in the first place. Rinse them with water, dry them and use them next time you need them.
