Outdoor-based swimming can be good for this; the water often feels great even when the temperature outside is cooler. Outdoor pools are generally heated up to 26°C . FFootball ootball ccoach oach R Russ uss e enjoys njoys China China adventure adventure If Russ Ralph ever gets a call from Ant or Dec inviting him to take part in ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!’, he’d surely have as good a chance as any of winning. Firstly, he’s a football man through and through and it’s time someone from the beautiful game was crowned king of the jungle; secondly, he’s a really good bloke; and thirdly, he’s already done his own version of the show ’s bushtucker trial and has lived to tell the tale. And some tale it is too. You see Russ, who lives in Hardwicke with his partner Paula Sedgley, has not long since returned from a five-week spell in South China coaching youngsters in the art of all things football. The 56 -year-old, who in this country coaches youngsters at West Bromwich Albion’s Gloucester Development Centre as well as at
Highnam Football Club, was based at Shenzhen, a city roughly the size of London and about 90 minutes’ drive north of Hong Kong. “I loved it out there,” enthused Russ. “It was amazing. Culturally and footballing wise, it was the best experience of my life.” The football was full on but at least Russ had a lifetime’ss experience to call on; what he wasn’t so prepared for was the food. “It’s not like the Chinese takeaways
you get round here,” he laughed, “and they ’re not into their sauces. My partner used to ask every night what my bushtucker trial was!” One of the things he ate was cow’s tongue – “It tasted like roast beef,” he laughed, before adding, “I used to te l l t h e m n o t to te l l m e w h a t I was eating until I’d eaten it! “And if I was eating pork or beef, I told them not to tell me which part of the body it came from!” And while Russ enjoyed having limited knowledge of what he was eating, he was certainly able to feed p l e n t y o f i n fo r m a t i o n to t h e footballing wannabes in and around Shenzhen – and there were plenty of them. “There’s 130 million kids in China into football, it ’s crazy,” said Russ. “The country’s president is massively into football and he’s pumping in billions to improve kids as players.” Full story online.

A s r u g b y p l a ye r s of yesteryear and p o l o p l a ye r s o f today have discovered, Tom Beim is not always an easy man to catch up with. When The Local Answer tracked Tom Beim h i m d ow n , t h e one-time Gloucester wing was in A r g e n t i n a t e n d i n g t o p o l o b u s i n e s s, the sport from which he has made his living since hanging up his rugby boots some 10 years or so ago. And it’s fair to say that the 42-yearold is as good at polo as he was at rugby, having been capped by England in both sports. It was at Gloucester that he first made his name in rugby in the 1990s, w h i l e t h e s e d ay s h e i s o n e o f t h e leading lights at Cirencester Park Polo Club.
Ask Richard Dawson w h a t h i s h o p e s a re for the coming cricket season and Gloucestershire’s head coach doesn’t hesitate. “To improve on last year,” he said. And while that Richard Dawson may be obvious – Gloucestershire failed to q u a l i f y fo r t h e k n o c k o u t s t a g e s o f either white ball competition and never really threatened to be promotion contenders in the county championship – it’s how you go about bringing about that improvement that is all important. For Dawson, hard work and players consistently backing themselves in the heat of battle is key to Gloucestershire’s chances of enjoying a successful campaign which gets under way with a four-day County Championship Division Two game against Kent in Canterbury on Friday 13th April.
Stephen Morgan is pretty well-known around Gloucester. He’s been the city’s mayor since last May and has another couple of m o n t h s o r s o i n t h e ro l e b e f o r e h e hands over the ceremonial robes. It ’s a job that takes him out and a b o u t a l o t , m e e t i n g a n d g re e t i n g , and quite often he’s accompanied by his wife Sally. And while there is still a chance to grab some down-time in the 24/7 society that we now live in, that’s not really the case for four people who work in Quedgeley, who are, quite literally, being run off their feet. St St M Mary ary ddee CCrypt rypt On the outside, St Mary de Crypt in Southgate Street looks like a pretty,, but not extraordinary, church building. But, like many historic buildings in Gloucester, it can tell a lot of stories! In 1539, The Crypt School – now at Podsmead – was established by John and Joan Cooke in the schoolroom adjacent to the church. As Gloucester’s oldest free school, many tens of thousands of pupils have passed through its doors over the centuries including an Archbishop of Canterbury, a Question Time presenter, a revered poet and at least one City Council Leader (me!). George Whitefield, the famed evangelist who helped to spread the Great Awakening across America, preached his f i r s t s e r m o n f ro m t h e p u l p i t h e re ( a n d t h e p u l p i t i s s t i l l being used). Robert Raikes, founder of the Sunday School movement, was baptised here, as was Whitefield – and the font used for that is still in place. In St Mary de Crypt there is the Raikes Chapel containing the Raikes family vault. Jemmy Wood, the Gloucester miser who, legend has it, was the inspiration for Dicken’s character of Ebeneezer Scrooge, is buried here. During the Siege of Gloucester, St Mary de Crypt was used as an ammunition store – and the church walls still bear the scars of the odd skirmish here and there.

The church saw its congregation fall away as city centre living went out of fashion in past decades (although that is now changing), so a new purpose for the church was needed. The Discover DeCrypt charity was established to find a way of securing its future. Major restoration and refurbishment works are finally underway as part of a £2 million scheme supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, City Council and others. The plan is to make the most of the buildings as a community hub, a cultural venue and educational resource, as well as a place of worship. The projected opening date is March 2019. For more information, visit www.discoverdecrypt.org.uk . As always with Heritage Lottery funded schemes there is the need to raise match funding. The project team, led by Canon Nikki Arthy, has done a remarkable job in coming up with most of the required cash, but there remains a small but critical gap of £80,000. All donations of any size are welcome. You can donate via the website, or at any of the special events running during 2018 such as the monthly ‘Hard Hat Tours.’ So the next time you walk past St Mary de Crypt, just think about all the amazing stories this beautiful, but in some ways unremarkable, building can tell. And if you want to see it thrive in its new purpose, even the most modest of donations can make a real difference. @ @cllrpauljames cllrpauljames

This is the time of year that everything starts getting busy again for the gardener – weeding, sowing, mowing , etc. We have had such a long winter that everyone is raring to get going. If this is the case, care w i l l h a ve to b e t a k e n w i t h a n y shrubs and trees planted in the last few months. Evergreens don’t show any sign of drought until they are in a really bad way so care must be t a k e n to g i v e t h e m a t h o r o u g h watering once a week until they are a year old and should have a strong root system. Remember, thorough watering means a good can full of water per plant , and mulching around the soil will keep the water in (although don’t go right up to the stem as it can lead to rotting).

Wildlife W ildlife M Matters atters with with Caroline Caroline Shelley Shelley
LLive ive llife ife o on n tthe he w wild ild sside ide As we come into April the changes we can see outside in terms of our wildlife are rapid. The weather is becoming milder (hopefully) and the days longer, and we have the promising summer months stretching before us. It ’s a good time to make plans for the garden and if you would like to do something in your garden to help wildlife this summer then you could try planting some wildflowers.
TThey hey o offer ffer a d diverse iverse set set of of h habitats abitats ffor or vvarious arious sspecies pecies Since the 1930s the number of wildflower meadows has seriously d e c l i n e d . T h i s i s a b i g p ro b l e m a s wildflower meadows are extremely valuable in offering a diverse set of habitats for various species. Our bees, birds and butterflies, as well as many other types of wildlife, rely on wildflowers to support their survival. As our wildflower meadows have decreased in number through the years, road verges have offered somewhere for wildflowers to grow instead. However, the continuous c u t t i n g o f t h e s e v e r g e s p r ev e n t s t h e m f ro m f l o u r i s h i n g . O u r n a t i ve wildflowers are struggling but there are things we can do.
Luckily you don’t have to have a spare meadow at hand to grow wildflowers – you can grow them on a s m a l l s c a l e a s we l l . W i l d f l owe r s g row b e s t i n l ow- n u t r i e n t s o i l a n d , once the area is planted, they are pretty low mainten-ance. Patience is required though, as it won’t look its best that first year. Instead it will evolve over time as species establish. There are a few things to consider when planting your wildflower area so it’s worth looking at the wealth of information available online from organisations such as Friends of the Earth, the RHS and the RSPB. If planting wildflowers is something you don’t have time for then another option is to just choose a section of your garden that you can leave to grow wild. Or, if you fancy a break f ro m l aw n m ow i n g d u t i e s , t h e n l e t the whole area go wild! You may be surprised what appears both in terms o f p l a n t s a n d i n s e c t s . I f yo u w o u l d l i k e t o d o m o re yo u could visit www.plantlife.org.uk who campaign to protect our native wild plants and funghi. They are running a campaign to encourage councils to manage road verges in a way that benefits wildflowers whilst keeping roads safe for motorists. You can sign the petition to encourage your local council to do the same at plantlife.love-wildflowers.org.uk/ roadvergecampaign

Rinse them with water, dry them and use them next time you need them. O Old ld TTenners enners “Hi George, how’s it going? Did you manage to get rid o f a l l yo u r o l d te n n e r s a t t h e e n d o f l a s t m o n t h ? ” “Come on John, you know I was never going to ditch Pavarotti and his mate. That old vinyl will b e w o r t h a fo r t u n e o n e d ay ” . “ N o George, tenners not tenors! They went out of date at the end of February”. “But I’d only just recovered from changing my old £1 coins into something resembling a threepenny bit.” T h e o l d £ 1 0 n o te ( t h e one with Charles Darwin on it) can no longer be used as legal tender. If you still have any, y o u c a n t r y p a y i n g t h e m i n t o yo u r bank account, but there is no guarantee that they ’ll be accepted. The official line is that you have to exchange them via the Bank of England, which means either a trip to London or sending your money by post. If you choose to do that, remember to s e n d i t v i a re g i s te r e d p o s t o r s o m e o t h e r v e r s i o n where it’s insured.
O Over ver £ £2billion 2billion w worth orth of of old old tenners tenners sstill till iin n ccirculation! irculation! Incredibly, estimates by the Bank of England suggest that there were over £2billion worth of old tenners still in circulation when they ceased to be legal tender. Yes, £2billion!! That represents over a quarter of the total £10 notes in circulation. They have been coming back at a rate of £85m a week . “I suppose the scores will be next to go?” “Surely you haven’t been hoarding manuscripts with your vinyl?” “No not musical scores, old twenties!” “Oh I see, yes, give it a couple of years and I’m sure we’ll have plastic ones of those too”. George is right , the existing £20 note is due to be replaced by a plastic version in 2020. If you want the answer to the pub quiz question in the meantime, they will carry a portrait of the landscape artist, J M W Turner. Britain joins a growing list of countries who have exchanged old paper notes for more durable polymer ones. Apparently Australia led the way as far back as 1988. As well as being more durable, the new notes are supposed to be more difficult to copy. If you’re a fan of paper notes, Money Matters has some good news for you. There are no plans to replace the existing £50 one!
