FFilm ilm R Review eview – PPatrick atrick B Baines aines A Adrift drift It ’s impossible not to feel somewhat weary about films inspired by real life stories when they hit the cinema with such frequency. Often this genre tends to be exaggerated by Hollywood directors who are always keen to put their own twist on events. Fortunately, ‘Adrift ’ is directed superbly and features two actors out of the very top drawer. The film tells the story of Tami (Shailene Woodley) and her fiancé Richard (Sam Clafin) who are travelling from Tahiti to San Diego on a yacht . After being caught in a hurricane, Tami wakes to find Richard injured and her yacht in a sorry state. The chances of rescue are extremely slim, they ’re far off course, and a long way from the shipping lanes. The two main characters have a warm, loving chemistry. The film’s e f f e c t s a re s t a g g e r i n g , t h e s h e e r size of the ocean is captured superbly. Charging Charging the the right right price price A good friend of mine always used to tell me that until a customer squeals about the price they are paying for something, you’re not charging enough for your product or services. It’s an interesting concept and certainly one that cannot be universally applied, but it does make you wonder whether some businesses are charging enough for their services. It applies especially to small businesses, as regular readers will know what I think of big firm bullies, who behave as they wish to in terms of their dealings with their smaller counterparts and that includes the way they deal with their charges. My marketing training taught me that there are two ways to position your business – offer a cheap product or service and hope that everyone will buy entirely on price or offer a quality product or service that customers will buy based on that quality. But take care not to mix and match the two. If you have a cheap offering, don’t ove rd o t h e b e l l s a n d w h i s t l e s ; i f y o u h av e a q u a l i t y p ro p o s i t i o n , m a k e s u re t h a t yo u r p r i c i n g l e ve l s a re appropriate to what you are offering. TThe he ‘‘value value ffor or m money’ oney’ p proposition roposition The trick , of course, is to get to the so-called ‘value for money ’ proposition. If you price it cheaply and overdeliver, you will never make a serious amount of money and end up a ‘busy fool’. If you deliver a quality service or product but don’t charge appropriately for it, everyone will love you, but your reward will come in heaven, whereas you could enjoy some of that reward on earth too. The retail and leisure sectors find it a lot easier than the service industry. They conduct market comparisons and, in this electronic age and with the proliferation of comparison websites, it is easy for providers to compare their prices against those of their competitors. Those providing services find it a lot more difficult , but there are still ways and means of establishing what the right price should be, including market research and feedback questionnaires, which are relatively easy to organise and inexpensive to implement. Don’t be afraid to review your sales prices on a regular basis. A small increase in your charges to current customers will generally yield more than a drive for new ones, at least in the short term. And if it feels like you are working for insufficient reward, talk to your customers about it . You’ll need good negotiating skills in most cases, but if the customer feels that he/she is getting ‘value for money’, they will probably agree to it readily. And if you’re just starting up in business, make sure that you structure your pricing strategy from day one. There’s more to starting up in business than just the administration, although it ’s important to get that element right too! Page 0

It makes this BMW even more special as, due to the futuristic design, it hasn’t aged at all. It still looks fresh and different to all other cars on the road. Benoit Jacob, the i8 designer, was influenced by the 1978 BMW M1, drawn by the legendary Giorgetto Giugiaro (famous for DeLorean, Lotus Esprit, etc.) so the original DNA was there to build on. One of the most striking features of The Local Answer
the BMW i8 Coupé is the doors. They are of a Dihedral design and move forwards and upwards, so add a bit of drama to the car when you open them. The car I drove, by the way, was painted in a sophisticated individual Donington Grey. The interior of the i8 is familiar BMW, but also has that concept feel, like nothing else in the price range. Yes it’s a very low car to get in and out of, so do beware, but that ’s an addition to the special feel. The BMW i8 Coupé is built with an exceptional lightweight concept called LifeDrive architecture. It consists of the Drive module – an a l u m i n i u m c h a s s i s – a n d t h e L i fe module – an ultralight passenger compartment made of high-strength carbon-fibre. BMW say that “Together they create sustainability and a perfect weight balance, delivering unmatched sportiness”; it also means the suspension on the BMW i8 is a little softer and soaks up all the bumps you find on a modern UK B-road. The i8 is, in fact , perfect for the British roads with Dynamic Traction
Control (DTC), which reduces wheel spin, and the BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system. The powertrain in the BMW i8 is a mid-engine set up with a 231hp TwinPower Turbo threec y l i n d e r i n - l i n e p e t ro l e n g i n e (six-speed transmission) driving the rear and a 143hp two-speed electric motor which drives the front wheels. This means that the i8 can run for 34 miles on pure electric (ideal for t ow n d r i v i n g ) o r h av e a 3 7 4 h p hybrid set up which allows for sporty driving without the miles per gallon issues. The 0 - 62mph figure for the Coupé is 4.4 secs and 4.6 secs for the Roadster (convertible); the mpg is a staggering 148.6 for the i8 Coupé (134.5 for the Roadster).

Scott is the first-team manager while his wife Sarah is club secretary and also the match secretary. “She is very supportive,” said Scott, “we try to do our bit.” That is clearly something of an understatement and the club, who play in Division Two West of the Hellenic League, are obviously a big part of their lives, especially when you consider their son George will be playing for the under-7s this season after playing for the under- 6s last time out. Their three-year-old daughter Effie is more into ballet at the moment but there’s still plenty of time for her to get into football! And just to confirm the club’ss family appeal, they recently ran a 24-hour footballathon which featured players from the under- 6s all the way up to the senior teams. “It was brilliant,” said Scott Powles,

So says Mike Angell, the chairman of the Gloucestershire Lawn Tennis A s s o c i a t i o n , w h o k n ow s a t h i n g o r two about a sport that has been taken t o a n o t h e r l ev e l by t h e l i k e s o f Federer, Nadal and Serena Williams in the 21st century. “The jewel in Gloucestershire’s crown is the county leagues,” said Angell.”

The footballathon was a huge success
“we’re hoping we raised considerably more than £10,000. A massive thanks goes to first-team player Danny Way who organised the footballathon and created a real community day to remember.” That money will go towards getting the club’s facilities up to the standard required to play in Division One West of the Hellenic League. It is hoped that everything will be in place – including new floodlights and a new stand – in time for the cricket stars of tomorrow – and that’s official. Some 50,000 young people around the country have now taken up the ECB-driven course but Gloucestershire – through the Gloucestershire Cricket Board – are the first county to have beaten their target this summer with around 2,500 youngsters now playing at clubs in the area. That’s because they finished second in the table just ahead of near neighbours Moreton Rangers. And while the first team is obviously the main focus of any club, there is much, much more to Bourton Rovers than just the 1st XI. “We’ve got something like 160 playing members from under- 6s upwards which is really good,” said Powles with some pride. “We run three senior men’s teams with the reserves and the 3rds playing in the Witney and District League. “Gary McPhilmey and Jay Mosson, who are managers of the reserves and 3rd team, have done a great job really raising the club’s playing profile. They are two fine managers. “We’ve got lots of good youngsters coming through as well.” Full story online.
TThe he b big ig k kick-off ick-off The highlight of England’s cricketing summer – the five-match Test series against India – will still be very much in its infancy when the new Gloucestershire Northern Senior Football League season gets under way.
