February’s winning cover photo: Derek Lightstone of Barnwood

Welcome Welcome ttoo February February ... ... This is the month of love and it’s possible that you have plenty of plans for romance up your sleeve. However, if you do need a little help, have a read of this month’s ‘Gadgets & Gizmos’ editorial for some gift inspiration or treat your loved one by making them this month’s ‘Delicious Dish’. It’s also a good time to show yourself some love, perhaps by making sure that the health of your heart is a priority.. Holly Hannigan has some great information about this in ‘Medical Health’. If it’s your house that’s crying out for some TLC, have a read of Jade Wilce’s ‘Interior Design’ artical for some great furniture up-cycling project ideas. As always, there’s lots going on across the county this month so you’ll certainly be entertained, whether or not there’s someone special in your life! Check out our What’s On section for details of events near you. Whether or not you’re a fan of Valentine’s Day, all of us at The Local Answer hope you have a lovely day!

H Here ere ccome ome tthe he w omen iin nb women black lack Time’s up, black is back and it’s here to stay. At the Golden Globes 2018 last month, another trend took to the red carpet. Even the very colour of carpet being apt for the warning sign of what is coming for women. Not just in film, b u t t h e e n te r t a i n m e n t i n d u s t r y a s a whole and in extension, women in the workplace today. Black wasn’t a case of RIP, but a symbolic statement – albeit a subtle statement – of solidarity between women for victims of sexual harassment, as part of the ‘Time’s Up’ movement that ’s been dominating social media.

After a month of awards, February has the upcoming BAFTAs and BRITs, closely followed by the biggest awards evening in the Hollywood calendar, the Oscars. Will we see more statements of solidarity? I’dd count on it . So why shouldn’t we mere mortals help promote the fact that time is up for sexual assault , harassment and inequality in the workplace? The clock has run out, it’s time to do something about it . It ’s time to embrace a timeless trend and make your clothes mean more. Dust off that age-old blackness in your wardrobe and start styling… P o we r d r e s s i n g h a s n e v e r b e e n s o feminine. Although I’m not just talking The Local Answer

about a 9 -5 wardrobe only reserved for the work place. After all, that is the reason for this sudden fusion of black , but the best thing about black is that it goes with everything! In true feminism fashion, the colour black is one of the most, if not the most, flattering colour to showcase the curves of the female form, screaming girl power. No wonder why they chose black . One question; how to wear it? Accessorise. The LBD is a classic that can always be counted upon to compliment your body, whatever style that may be. Whether you’re partial to a peplum, being bold in a body-con, sitting pretty in pleats or are an A* in an A-line, choose a look that suits you a n d s t y l e i t u p a s to r m . M a k e b l a c k by e ve n m o re a u t h o r i t a t i ve accentuating it with chunky gold or abstract shaped jewellery. with black skinnies and chunky ankle boots. An edgy alternative, and a personal preference of mine, is the jumpsuit. If you’re not the dress type-of-gal, the all-in-one can be as feminine (or not) as you choose to make it. The ‘trouser dress’ is comfortable, a warmer option on those chillier nights out , avoids a last minute tan and elongates any pair of pins, especially with a pair of killer heels. H o we v e r y o u c h o o s e t o s t y l e y o u r shade of solidarity, remember this is power dressing in the literal sense. Who run the world? Girls.

CClass lass w with ith a llittle ittle ssass ass Structured handbags and look-at-me shoes will add that extra ‘je ne sais quoi’ and, most importantly, don’t be afraid to take a risk on one of them. Or both. No one ever got noticed playing it safe. If sexy cut-outs aren’t for you, look for a piece that will accentuate your frame. After all, we all have different ones. Try a tailored blazer, which says classy, while your accessories are saying sassy. You can’t have class without a little sass – think Marilyn meets Audrey on a night out.If blazers are too polished for your everyday style, create a strong combo by taking an edgier approach. including every type of facial imaginable, hair colour, styling, massages, waxing – you name it , they ’ll have it . So if you want to be truly indulgent this Valentine’s Day and treat the special man in your life, go and indulge yourselves with a ‘his and hers’ salon experience, or browse the growing shelves of male beauty p ro d u c t s t h a t a re s u re to g e t yo u r man looking his best.

V Valentine’s alentine’s FFeet eet This is the time of year when the foundations of our body – the feet – are more often than not out of sight and out of mind, and we tend to get lazy with their upkeep. We have come a long way in foot care and have ditched the old tricky pumice stones for revolutionary at-home pedicure devices. There are many to choose from on the market , all generally offering similar results. T h e b a t te r y h e l d device normally has little mini pumice type ro l l e r s w h i c h yo u g e n t l y g l i d e o ve r t h e rough skin on your feet. If you can’t indulge with an expensive ‘his and hers’ spa pedicure, this would be a great gift to give your Valentine, especially if you do the pedicure for them!

FFoundation oundation

February is often the month that shows our skin at its worst. We have endured several months of indoor heating, harsh exterior conditions and are left missing that lovely summer glow. A good foundation and concealer can correct all that and give us a lovely luminous look. Laura Gellar cosmetics are renowned for their Italian baked foundations that do not d r y t h e s k i n o u t b u t j u st a d d t h at youthful glow we all need at this time of the year. Their blushes add a soft luminosity without that cakey effect we often find when we use powder blushes. Less is often more for a healthy glowing look , which can take years off our appearance. Be sure to shop around, as I always recommend – make up counters are there to share their expertise with you so do not hesitate to ask for their expert advice. Sometimes just one small change can make a world of difference without breaking the bank . Have fun, experiment and have a lovely Valentine’s Day. To advertise call 01242 510500 Page 13

Anal glands are two tiny cyst-like sacs that sit just inside the bottom and secrete a foul-smelling scent marker onto the dogs faeces. When they become over-full a dog will scoot or rub its bottom on the ground to try to empty them. If it persists, a vet or vet nurse can empty them manually to relieve the discomfort. 2) 2) Cats Cats llike ike p people eople w who ho d dislike islike tthem hem tthe he b best est An interesting theory and plenty of people have stories of a cat that seems to be attracted to the cat-hater in the room. There is probably a bit of truth in the theory that some cats prefer people who avoid eye-contact with them and don’t rush towards them with out-stretched hands, which for the nervous cat can both be somewhat threatening. However, a recent study failed to prove that cats consistently prefer the company of those that ignore them. It really depends on the nature of the cat. Some love attention and fuss, while others are more circumspect and approach more cautiously. 3) 3) A cat cat o orr d dog og llicking icking iits ts w wound ound iiss g good ood ffor or tthe he w wound ound A small amount of licking might superficially clean a minor wound, but dogs’ and cats’ mouths are full of bacteria and a cat’s tongue is incredibly rough (almost like sandpaper). T h e y w i l l c h e w o u t s t i tc h e s quickly and spread bacteria to deeper layers of a wound. It is much better to clean a wound with disinfectant or saline than let a pet lick at an open wound. It’s also not true that a dog’s mouth is ‘cleaner’ than a human’s mouth so don’t let them lick you! I’ve seen what my dog eats and I wouldn't want that smeared on my face. 4) 4) Dogs Dogs eat eat grass grass only only if if tthey hey aare re sick sick Owners are well aware of a dog’s ability to gorge on grass and make itself sick when it needs to. However, many dogs will eat grass occasionally and for these dogs it can be completely normal. Some seem to habitually graze on grass and for them it isn’t associated with being sick afterwards – they consume only a modest amount without any ill effects. As to why some dogs enjoy eating grass – the jury is still out. Perhaps some dogs just like the taste! 5) 5) Cats Cats have have nine nine lives! lives! No one really believes this one but it’s an interesting saying and its origin has been around for centuries. In different cultures the number varies – in Turkish and Arabic legends cats have six lives, while in some Spanish speaking regions the number is seven. Cats’ relative dexterity and agility probably contribute to the idea that a cat can escape from various tricky situations relatively unscathed. They have a remarkable righting response which means they can flip over and land on their feet when falling from heights, and studies have shown that they survive falls well due to their light frames and ability to absorb the impact of a fall.

TTechnology: echnology: helpful helpful oorr hharmful? armful? It is a sad fact that books are becoming o u t d a te d . However, nowadays the i n te r n e t and technology provide the wealth of resources and information that books once did as they become more and more a part of people’s daily lives. There are undeniably divided views on this though. Technology can be great for education – teachers can use it as a tool for learning. However, more and more people are dubbing technology a harmful influence as it seems we are turning into a society of robots. On the one hand, apps such as Duolingo, used fo r learning languages, can be extremely helpful. When learning, would you rather leaf through a huge dictionary to learn n ew w o r d s o r s i m p l y o p e n u p yo u r app and learn vocabulary in a fun, interactive way?

There have been many occasions that I’ve attempted to help m y yo u n g e r b ro t h e r w i t h h i s homework and he’s struggled to look up from his phone. I k n ow m y b ro t h e r wo u l d s o o n e r d o s o m e t h i n g o n a s c re e n than he would using a book or pen and paper. As most young people have grown up with and are used to using screens, technology being part of their educational environment may

provide them with more motivation for learning. In turn, they may enjoy it more and possibly achieve higher academic performances. Perhaps more significant than this though is the evidence found for the overuse of technology causing issues s u c h a s d e v e l o p m e n t a l d e l ay s, anxiety, depression, sleep issues and obesity. Too much time in front of a screen means children are also struggling to develop social skills.

SStrike trike a b balance alance Phones being used for both leisure and learning surely amounts to a h o r r i f y i n g a m o u n t o f s c re e n t i m e . According to the BBC , the average five to sixteen-year-old can spend around six and a half hours in front of a screen every day. Should we really be adding more on to this at school? Maybe it’s better that the child has a chance to disconnect while in a learning environment. Like many things in life, it ’s probably best just to strike a balance. If used in moderation, with children being taught early on that it’s healthy to have a limit, technology can be a helpful learning aid. That doesn’t mean everything has to be done with the help of a screen though.

HitchBright is a new, innovative piece of equipment specially designed for the caravanning and towing industry. It’s so easy to use – simply insert the HitchBright ball in the hitch socket and lock it in place.

TThe he Return Return o off tthe he TTarga arga I was recently invited to a review of the Mazda line up which took place in the Cotswolds, near Stroud. It’s my local stomping ground and the roads around there are fantastic; with a mix o f h i l l y t ow n s t o n e g o t i a t e a n d , o f course, long open stretches of tarmac t h a t w e c a n t h a n k t h e R o m a n s fo r designing. Mazda has an amazing range of cars, including SUV’s (I can recommend the CX-3), very a f fo r d a b l e h a t c h b a c k s ( s u c h a s t h e Mazda 2), saloon cars (Mazda 6) and they even make an estate car, which is becoming a very rare beast indeed. Mazda for me are famous for little sports cars and, alongside the iconic MX-5, they now have the RF version.

A hard-top hard-top tthat hat ffolds olds b back ack at at tthe he press press o off a button button RF stands for Retractable Fastback and instead of a soft-top roof this car has a hard-top that automatically folds back at the press of a button. The key thing is that it’s not a full on convertible but a Targa top, so the centre section is removed. Think the Pontiac Trans Am’s from ‘Smokey and the Bandit’ and ‘Knight Rider ’, also, The Local Answer

at o n e p o i n t i n ‘ G o l d f i n g e r ’ , J a m es Bond’s Aston Martin DB5, and all those iconic cars were Targa/T-tops; so once the centre of the roof is removed on an RF you are left with a letterbox rear window and buttresses.

Welcome Welcome p protection rotection ffrom rom the the elements elements Years ago you had to store this centre section in the boot or behind the seats, but the RF’s beautifully designed automatic system means it stores itself. You have the security of a hard-top, but when the “roof” is down, there is welcome protection from the elements due to the rear buttresses. If you have a partner who is particular about turning up without their hair looking like it has been through a hedge backwards, the MX5 RF is a perfect solution. The version I drove was the SKYACTIV-G, 2.0 -litre four cylinder inline, DOHC , 16 -valve, Euro 6 which puts out 160ps (about 158bhp). It’s a rear wheel drive with six-speed manual gearbox and a whole lot of fun. Kerb weight is a very lightweight 1120kg, including driver. Luggage

capacity comes in at 127 litres. Fuel economy is a frugal 40.9mpg and the 2.0 -litre engine gets from 0 - 62mph in 7.4 seconds. For someone who wants a good all round two-seater sports car you can’t beat that data. The 2.0 -litre RF on test started at £25,995, with Soul Red Metallic paint at a £670 option on top. It also had the option of a safety system – lane departure warning, blind spot m o n i to r i n g , e tc . – fo r £ 4 0 0 . A s standard you get a fantastic BOSE sound system, keyless entry, Bilstein suspension system, smart head light sy s t e m , n av i g a t i o n ; ev e r y t h i n g y o u need in a modern car.

Perfectly Perfectly ssuited uited tto o tthe he changeable changeable B British ritish w weather eather So in short, the MX-5 RF is perfectly suited to the changeable British weather, it’s a very pretty little thing, will have strong resale values and you don’t need to take a soft-top roof every few years to a professional for rain proofing, hurray. I have seen quite a few RF’S on local roads over t h e l a s t fe w m o n t h s s o I h av e a feeling Mazda are onto another winner.

New year, new website The Parish Council’s new website has gone live after extensive testing, with the same website address as before – www.charltonkingsparishcouncil.gov.uk T h e o l d we b s i te s e r v e d u s we l l o v e r t h e l a s t f i ve years, having had over 55,000 page views and been visited by more than 10,000 separate users, but it was time to update. The software for the new site is being supplied and supported by a company which specialises in providing websites for parish and town councils, and it comes with a comprehensive support package. We obtained a grant towards the cost of the website from Cheltenham Borough Council, via its Community Pride scheme. Please take a look! You’ll find it has a modern, fresh appearance. It’s designed to be easier to read and use, and we think it’s intuitive when it comes to finding your way around. If you have any comments do let us know. It will also be simpler for residents to contact us and there are links to the appropriate authorities such as the Borough or County Council if the subject matter is not a parish responsibility. B Bayliss ayliss iiss o one ne o off rrugby’s ugby’s real real thoroughbreds thoroughbreds The sporting term ‘all-rounder ’ is something that is readily associated with cricket. Think Botham, Flintoff or – the best of the three – Gloucestershire’s adopted son Mike Procter. It’s not a word that is used so often to describe rugby people, but it’s a very apt description for one Matt Bayliss. Rugby has played a big part in Bayliss’ life – a very big part – initially as a player and then as a top referee before taking on various prominent roles off the pitch. Born in Coney Hill in the heart of Gloucester, it was almost inevitable that rugby and Bayliss would go to g e t h e r l i k e K i n g s h o l m a n d T h e Shed. “I’ve been a Gloucester boy all my life,” the 72-year-old said. “I’ve never lived more than five miles from the holy ground… Kingsholm.

He was a good player in yesteryear and he’s a very good junior coach today, so good in fact that he is c u r re n t l y Swim England’s national Coach of the Year. That ’s a pretty impressive accolade – he was presented with the award by John Spicer Cheltenham’s superstar diver Leon Taylor at a glitzy ceremony at the end of last year – but at the age of nearly 64, budding water polo players at Cheltenham Swimming and Water Polo Club will be delighted to hear that he has no plans to take a step back any time soon.

He graduated to Gloucester Colts and spent four years with the seniors, playing mainly for the United, although he did play 20 -plus games for the first XV. After leaving Gloucester he made share his knowledge with anyone who will listen to him. That ’s because for the past eight months or so Rory has been working for a podcast called SpitballingPod, which is the brainchild of Brockworth-based and fellow 20 -something Luke Byron. We’d also play the Welsh clubs in midweek – Ebbw Vale, Swansea, Bridgend. “In those days Cheltenham were considered just below Gloucester.” Bayliss spent three seasons with Cheltenham – the last two as captain – and played with some stellar names. “Phil Blakeway was playing in the front row at 16,” chuckled Bayliss, “and there was also John Fidler, Bob Redwood, Bob White and Dave Protherough. Cheltenham had some damn good players. “We also had Mike Hamlin, Maurice Hamlin and Wes Hall.” Full story online. I started playing cricket for Gloucestershire,” he chuckled. Felicity Felicity iiss a ttrue rue ttennis ennis aace! ce! Felicity Thomas and her husband Gordon were making travel plans when The Local Answer called. It’s something they’ve become well practised in over the past couple of decades as Felicity ’s tennis career – rather like a good bottle of port – has got better and better with the passing of the years, winning age group tournaments all over the globe. Their planned destination this time around was Paris, with 77-year-old Felicity taking part in a veterans’ tournament in February. Paris is a lovely destination at any time of year of course – although especially at this time of year with Valentine’s Day just around the corner! – but it’s just one of a host of exotic locations that Felicity has visited in pursuit of her love of tennis. She’s played in New Zealand, Italy and Florida to name just a few places and has no thought of giving up the globetrotting any time soon. And yet in her formative years it was cricket and not tennis that caught her attention. “I was living in Hove and I was a bit of a cricket all-rounder,” she said. “I bowled medium pace. “ I d o re m e m b e r t a k i n g p a r t i n a tennis tournament. It was in a park in Hove and I didn’t take it very seriously. I don’t remember how I got on. “As a teenager I combined cricket with lacrosse, but lacrosse became my main sport from when I was 20 till about 30 wherever I was living – in Sussex , Kent , Warwickshire and Gloucestershire. “Though I played tennis occasionally, I did not join a tennis club as such until about 1968 in Leamington Spa. Then I joined East Glos Club in Cheltenham a year later. “That’s when I started playing tennis competitively and I enjoyed it.” S h e m a r r i e d G o rd o n i n 1 9 6 4 – “We’ve done the 50,” she laughed – and Gordon’s job as a bank manager b ro u g h t t h e m to C h e l te n h a m i n t h e late 60s. East Glos were just a big forehand d r i v e f ro m w h e re t h ey we re l i v i n g and she is still a member to this day. And a very active member she’s b e e n to o w i t h t h e c l u b b e i n g t h e springboard for all the success she has

enjoyed in recent years. “I remember a few of us took up coaching almost for a laugh,” she said. “But then I got into it and I took it to the next stage. “From there I was very lucky because I got into the county team and it all went from there really. That gave me the experience of playing against good players.

Tough Tough b baptism aptism “My first opportunity to play county tennis was in 1974 when the county of Avon was created. All the existing Gloucestershire players came from the new Avon, so Gloucestershire had to start virtually from scratch. “It was a tough baptism because we had to continue playing in Group T h r e e – o u t o f s ev e n – w i t h n o - o n e who had ever played at county level. I was aged 33 at that time.” That is quite an advanced age to be making your Gloucestershire debut, of course, so does Felicity regret not taking her tennis more seriously at a younger age? “My father asked me that,” she said. “If I had, I don’t think I’d have enjoyed it as much.” As it was, Felicity played for Gloucestershire for 20 -odd years and came up against some decent players along the way. “I remember playing Jo Durie,” she said. “She was playing for Avon and was only 14.” So how did she get on? “She beat me,” she chuckled, “she

hit the ball far too hard. I also played Judy Murray. She was known as Judy Erskine then and was playing for North of Scotland. “I don’t remember who won but she was very competitive!” Although she enjoyed some success at county level it was once Felicity entered age group tournaments that her career really started to take off. “It was when I started playing in the veterans’ tournaments for over-55s,” she said. “It ’s much easier when you’re playing people who are the same age as you. “ I t h i n k I wo n m y f i r s t v e t s ’ tournament in Eastbourne. That meant a lot to me because I believed I could now do it.” And she was right because over the years she has collected a stack of titles a n d i s a m u l t i p l e B r i t i s h a g e g ro u p champion at singles and doubles. S o w h a t a re h e r s t r e n g t h s a s a tennis player? “I’m not very tall but I’m quite fast,” she said. “I cover the court well for my age and I like to volley. I never give up!” That never-say-die attitude has served her well on all surfaces and although she has had her best results on grass, she admits that she really enjoys playing on clay. “It ’s more of a battle,” she said. “You’ve got to think about what your strategy is because the ball keeps coming back . It’s not like grass where you can hit more winners.”

B Be eM Myy Valentine Valentine ’Tis the month of romance and sales of Milk Trays and red roses as we welcome Valentine’s Day this year. Of course, Valentine’s Day isn’t just for couples, and if you happen to be single that’s no excuse not to want a bit of self-love. With all the handy gizmos that happen to be circling the shelves of giant stuffed teddy bears and heart-shaped sweets, you can be sure to treat yourself this year. Unless, what you really want is a life-sized bear with an ‘I Love You’ Tshirt...

G Gourmet ourmet G Gadgetry adgetry CChocolate hocolate FFountain ountain F l o we r s m i g h t b e t h e t y p i c a l go-to gift for your girlfriend or wife on Valentine’s Day, but if you’re a guy looking f o r s o m e t h i n g to s h a re with your spouse, then this product will work a treat! With its fancy title, the Gourmet Gadgetry Chocolate Fountain creates a certain appeal of luxury, w h i c h i s h e l p e d by i t s stainless steel tiers and statement piece effect . Available at £32.99, it ’s

both show-stopping and easy to clean, with the tiers being easy to remove and wash. If you want to attempt to be healthy, you can always include some fruit to dip, or if you’re s i m p l y a n h o n est chocoholic, just grab a straw and go to town. For best results, you’ll need at least 900g of chocolate. After the chocolate is melted, pour it into the chocolate fountain bowl and switch the mode to ‘Heat Motor’ to get it going. After all, a bouquet of roses might look pretty, but chocolate is always practical.

It’ll soothe all your a c h e s a n d p a i n s w i t h i t s r e m o te controlled heat technology, letting you choose where it needs to work . And with its 25% extra back coverage, you can literally sit back a n d l e t i t d o a l l t h e h a rd w o r k . Remember to enjoy some self-love a m o n g s t a l l t h e s m u g h a p py couples!

Sustainable Sustainable e energy nergy The future of sustainable energy is looking bright : after last year ’s success of going a whole day without burning coal for energy, the U K i s i n v e s t i n g m o re t h a n ev e r i n renewable and sustainable energy. But why are we now putting such a fo c u s o n t h e s e e n e rg y t y p e s, a n d what exactly are the benefits?

TTypes ypes o off SSustainable ustainable EEnergy nergy I n 2 0 1 2 , 1 1 . 3 % o f a l l o u r p ow e r came from renewable sources. However, in 2017, this skyrocketed to nearly a third of all of the e l e c t r i c i t y d u r i n g s u m m e r m o n t h s. Overall electricity generation was lower than normal – thanks to longer days and warmer nights – but was largely driven by wind farms and relatively high wind speeds. In 2016, 11.5% of the total energy c a m e f ro m w i n d , a n d t h i s h a s substantial benefits: there’s less air pollution, it ’s more cost effective than fossil fuels, and it’s completely abundant and sustainable. This is the same with solar power, although this has had less success due to temperamental weather in the UK . Biomass is the least green of the renewable energies, as it relies on burning waste, and therefore still releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

The Local Answer

A SSustainable ustainable U Utopia topia Sustainable sources produce little to no CO2 within their life cycle (which i n c l u d es t h e m a k i n g , i n st a l l i n g , l i fe t i m e a n d r e m ov i n g o f t h e i r equipment) in comparison to what is produced by burning fossil fuels. If all sources, or even a large majority, were sustainable, then we would be able to remove the most damaging unsustainable sources and reduce the rate of global warming. This then leads to increasingly healthy air, water and land as it is

tainted with less pollution (currently linked with cancer and respiratory problems), and allows for us to live within healthy environments, even in big towns and cities (especially if this energy is used to power electric cars!). Equally, it can help to stabilise energy prices, as renewable sources are always there, meaning we are n ot s o d e p e n d e n t u p o n t h e fluctuating prices of oil or gas. Some energy providers work with more renewable suppliers than o t h e r s, a n d m o v i n g f ro m o n e to a n o t h e r c a n b e a s i m p l e sw i t c h . However, away from the power p l a n t , t h e re a re o p p o r t u n i t i e s to i n ve s t i n y o u r ow n s u s t a i n a b l e energy. Having rooftop solar panels fitted allows you to generate power during the day, which can be stored and t h e n u s e d w h e n yo u g e t h o m e to heat your water and cook your food. Avoid oil heaters and opt for electric ones instead, and have your home well insulated to avoid excess energy being used to heat the air a r o u n d y o u r h o u s e. L i t t l e c h a n g e s can lead to you being much greener, and possibly saving a few pounds!

No, this is a question of how a company employing 20,000 people crosses the line from being an expanding provider of services in various parts of the public sector to a disgraced company in liquidation that has left many smaller businesses in something of a mess.

Money Money M Matters atters

Overtrading is a phenomenon that has plagued growing businesses for centuries. Companies that have aggressive expansion plans can be the darlings of industry and government , with confident , plausible entrepreneurs at the helm. Some of the companies succeed and are wellmanaged, but for others, the goal becomes size at all costs and the iceberg is just around the corner. An overaggressive attitude to growth too often leads to a company being unable to obtain sufficient finance for its operations, which will eventually lead to it simply running out of money. Sadly, before they start to see the bigger picture of the failure for which they are heading, companies that are overtrading will take short-term actions that they believe will help them through the cash flow difficulties they are facing. Actions such as slowing down the payment of bills to suppliers. Ultimately they achieve nothing more than delaying the inevitable for the company concerned, but the impact on their suppliers who have not been paid can b e c a t a s t ro p h i c . M a n y o f t h o s e s u p p l i e r s a r e s m a l l businesses that can ill afford customers such as Carillion taking 30 days to pay their bill, let alone the 90 or even 120 days that major companies seem to consider their right to take to settle their account . Sadly the eventual impact on some of these small businesses will be that they are forced to close.

TThe he w warning arning ssigns igns a are re o obvious bvious The warning signs to those small businesses are obvious, but there is often nothing that they can do about it without putting their activity with that major customer at stake. In the end they may prove to have been better off without that big company ’s business, but by the time they work that out it’s too late. It’s long been good business practice not to have all your eggs in one basket and that remains true today. Regular readers of this column will be well aware of what I think of the business practices of large businesses, all of which are bullies to small local ones. I just hope the fall out from Carillion won’t do too much damage to the county’s small business economy.
