W Welcome elcome ttoo FFebruary ebruary ...... This is the month of love and it’s possible that you have plenty of plans for romance up your sleeve. However, if you do need a little help, have a read of this month’s ‘Gadgets & Gizmos’ editorial for some gift inspiration or treat your loved one by making them this month’s ‘Delicious Dish’. It’s also a good time to show yourself some love, perhaps by making sure that the health of your heart is a priority. Holly Hannigan has some great information about this in ‘Medical Health’. If it’s your house that’s crying out for some TLC, have a read of Jade Wilce’s ‘Interior Design’ artical for some great furniture up-cycling project ideas. As always, there’s lots going on across the county this month so you’ll certainly be entertained, whether or not there’s someone special in your life! Check out our What’s On section for details of events near you. Whether or not you’re a fan of Valentine’s Day, all of us at The Local Answer hope you have a lovely day!

TTechnology: echnology: helpful helpful oorr hharmful? armful? It is a sad fact that books are becoming o u t d a te d . However, nowadays the i n te r n e t and technology provide the wealth of resources and information that books once did as they become more and more a part of people’s daily lives. There are undeniably divided views on this though. Technology can be great for education – teachers can use it as a tool for learning. However, more and more people are dubbing technology a harmful influence as it seems we are turning into a society of robots. On the one hand, apps such as Duolingo, used fo r learning languages, can be extremely helpful. When learning, would you rather leaf through a huge dictionary to learn n ew w o r d s o r s i m p l y o p e n u p yo u r app and learn vocabulary in a fun, interactive way?

There have been many occasions that I’ve attempted to help m y yo u n g e r b ro t h e r w i t h h i s homework and he’s struggled to look up from his phone. As most young people have grown up with and are used to using screens, technology being part of their educational environment may
provide them with more motivation for learning. In turn, they may enjoy it more and possibly achieve higher academic performances. Perhaps more significant than this though is the evidence found for the overuse of technology causing issues s u c h a s d e v e l o p m e n t a l d e l ay s, anxiety, depression, sleep issues and obesity. Too much time in front of a screen means children are also struggling to develop social skills.
SStrike trike a b balance alance Phones being used for both leisure and learning surely amounts to a h o r r i f y i n g a m o u n t o f s c re e n t i m e . According to the BBC , the average five to sixteen-year-old can spend around six and a half hours in front of a screen every day. Should we really be adding more on to this at school? Maybe it’s better that the child has a chance to disconnect while in a learning environment. Like many things in life, it ’s probably best just to strike a balance. If used in moderation, with children being taught early on that it’s healthy to have a limit, technology can be a helpful learning aid. That doesn’t mean everything has to be done with the help of a screen though.

R Robinswood obinswood H Hill il l I have fond memories of Robinswood Hill when I was growing up – from junior school trips climbing to the top, to running around it for cross country afternoons when I was at The Crypt School. It has also, literally, been a beacon for Gloucester on occasions such as the new Millennium and The Queen’s Golden and Diamond Jubilees. There is probably no better vantage point from which to look down over the city. For a while, though, it did feel like an asset that we weren’t making the most of. As city-dwellers, we are very fortunate to have the hill and a 250 -acre country park just a couple of miles or so outside the city centre.
TThe he H Hill ill h has as b been een a awarded warded Green G reen FFlag lag sstatus tatus In recent years improvements have taken place, driven by Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust, the Friends of Robinswood Hill, Councillor Colin Organ and our committed team of rangers who look after the hill. These range from a new wooden education shelter to some stunning wood sculptures. This year the Hill has been awarded Green Flag status – the benchmark standard for parks and green spaces. In July 2016, we held my daughter Eirys’s 1st birthday p a r t y o n t h e h i l l a n d a n u m b e r of t h o s e w h o c a m e along were surprised at how much better the hill was than the last time they had been. Its events programme is improving all the time with everything from 4x4 rides to the top, to dawn chorus walks and night time nature safaris. It almost goes w i t h o u t s a y i n g t h a t R o b i n sw o o d H i l l i s i m p o r t a n t f o r nature conservation in our city too, providing a home for wild orchids and bluebells and a habitat for many creatures, such as badgers, foxes, two types of deer and birds including Red Kites. On the other side of the Hill, it ’s great news that Gloucester Golf Club has been saved from its threatened closure by the Club Members taking it over and running it themselves. So the next time you’re stuck for something to do, when you fancy some fresh air, feel like a bit of exercise and don’t want to travel too far, why not pay a trip to Robinswood Hill? Like a lot of my family, you’ll probably come away thinking it was even better than the last time you’d been there. @ @cllrpauljames cllrpauljames

Why Why M Marc arc R Richards ichards iiss rright ight m man an ffor or CCity ity It may be stretching it a tad to say that Marc Richards has been preparing for the job of manager of Gloucester City all of his adult life, but he’s certainly eminently qualified for a role that he took on in the final days of 2017. You see the 36-year-old, as well as being a decent footballer who played for a number of clubs in and around Gloucestershire, has spent much of the 21st century coaching footballers at all levels of the game. And it is that playing and coaching background that will surely stand him in good stead over the next weeks, months and hopefully years at the National League South club. As a player he numbers Tewkesbury Town, Cheltenham Town, Gloucester City, Cinderford Town, Weston-super-Mare, Swindon Supermarine, Cirencester Town, Chippenham Town, Shortwood United and Evesham United among

Tim Hancock “I’ve been going to the same place for the past 26 years ever since I started playing cricket for Gloucestershire,” he chuckled. “I don’t have to tell them what I want, they just cut it.” So any particular style? “No,” he laughed, “I’ve had the same haircut for the past 20 years, it’s your classic number three on the back and sides with a bit more left on top.” And while there were obviously no highlights in the Hancock barnet when he left the barber ’s in Bristol, there were certainly plenty of highlights in h i s to p - l e v e l c r i c k e t c a r e e r w h i c h spanned 15 years with his adopted

his former clubs in the area. And as a coach, he has worked alongside Tim Harris at Gloucester for the past three-and-a-half seasons and also has experience as a player/coach during a three-year spell with Manly United in Australia. Add in his work as the current assistant director of elite sport at Hartpury College and two summers coaching in the USA in New England and California in between studying
at university and it ’s not surprising that the top brass at Gloucester saw him as the heir apparent once Harris had decided to call time on his near four years in charge. And he’s got some impressive qualifications too, holding an MSc in coaching science as well as his UEFA A licence coaching badges. He’s also ambitious. “The one thing I would say is that Gloucester is a big city not to have a Football League club,” he said. “If everyone gets behind the club, who’s to say that Gloucester City can’t take off? “Let’s see how far we can go. It’s so important for the club to get back to t h e c i t y i n te r m s o f t h e atmosphere and togetherness. There are some pretty good job titles going around these days. Work for a bespoke travel company and underneath your name on the business card could read ‘beach consultant ’. Or work for a fashion company and you could be ‘head of style’. Sean Bailey, who lives in Gloucester, has a decent job title too and he must be rated pretty highly by his bosses because he is a ‘quality manager’ for a firm in Gloucester! “It’s alright unless anything goes wrong,” laughed Bailey, w h o a l s o h a p p e n s to b e c a p t a i n o f Rodway Hill Golf Club. TThe he legend legend that that iiss JJohn ohn B Bayliss ayliss John Bayliss is an entertainer.r He was an entertainer on the rugby pitch for Gloucester in the 60s and 70s and he’s still an entertainer today, delivering almost as many punchlines in a onehour-plus interview as he did crunching tackles back in the days when he was one of the men who put the ‘King’ into Kingsholm. He was a centre of some repute – rough, tough and uncompromising, taking on all-comers whether he was a t t a c k i n g o r d e fe n d i n g a n d n e ve r taking a backward step. He was renowned for his tackling – he was as hard as the terraces where the Gloucester faithful stood and watched in awe – but he could play a b i t a s w e l l a n d j u s t l i k e fe l l o w Gloucester legends Mickey Booth and Dick Smith, he was desperately unlucky not to win an England cap. Born and bred in Gloucester, Bayliss, 75 in March, was always going to play rugby in a city that lived and breathed the sport. “I first had an interest in rugby when my dad, Jack , took me down to Rotol to watch them play,” Bayliss said. “My dad played for them and I’d be about three or four. He was a big guy and played in the second row. He also had a few games for Newport which is where he was from. I thought he was pretty good although you always think that your dad is good, don’t you! Bayliss’ earliest memories of playing rugby were pretty basic. “We’d put two coats down at each end of a pitch,” he chuckled. “I’d be about eight years old. I was always a bit of a devil in the tackle.” It wasn’t long before Bayliss was playing proper rugby and his first game was for Fielding and Platt , the engineering firm in Gloucester. H e e n j oye d p l ay i n g fo r t h e m b u t although the young Bayliss clearly had something about him, he was soon to discover that rugby could be an unforgiving game. “We went up to London to play,” he recalled. “I was only 11 and was younger than everyone else. The home team were a player short so I got put on the wing to play against Fielding and Platt. “I was supposed to be marking my cousin Trevor Lawrence, who although

three years older was only an inch taller than me. But they put me on the wrong wing and I was up against John Burrows who was 6ft 2in!” He survived that ‘little v large’ showdown of course and it wasn’t too long before he was getting a runout in the club’s 2nd XV. And by the age of 15 he was deemed ready to play for the 1sts. “I’d always played in the centre,” he said. “Basically I was an inside centre and I took a lot of crash balls. But I’d also make a lot of dummy runs and get the opposition to think I was going to take the ball. “I was very quick over 10 -15-20 yards. At outside centre you needed to run 60 yards, you needed a lot of legs.”
IImpressing mpressing rrugby ugby ffolk ol k u up p a and nd d down own tthe he ccounty ounty Bayliss’ all-action style was impressing knowledgeable rugby folk up and down the county, and he was s t i l l sw e e t 1 6 w h e n h e g o t h i s f i r s t taste of the big-time when he received a call-up to play for Gloucester United. In those days it was much easier for Gloucester-born players to play for the club of their dreams and it saddens Bayliss to see so few players from the city wearing the Cherry and White shirt these days. “Nowadays it’s very difficult for the 15 and 16 -year-olds in Gloucester to break through,” he said. “But those p l ay e r s a re s t i l l o u t t h e re . A l l t h e Gloucester legends – John Watkins, Steve Boyle, Mike Burton, Terry Hopson, Peter Ford – were bred in Gloucester. “My first game for Gloucester was against Leicester at Kingsholm. I was
17 and I was a late replacement after Jeremy Taylor withdrew. The captain Peter Ford sent his usual telegram... ‘Be at Kingsholm for 2pm!’“ So how did Bayliss get on? “I was brilliant for 40 minutes,” he l a u g h e d , “ a n d t h e n m y l e g s we n t . I t was a much faster pace than anything I’d been used to. I’d put so much into the game but in those days there were no subs so after half-time I had to start again.” Bayliss’ obvious quality soon shone through even at this level and within a year of his Gloucester debut he was lining up for Gloucestershire against Monmouthshire. “It was always an honour to play for Gloucestershire,” said Bayliss, who was capped more times by his county than anyone else. “In those days it was a step up, all the internationals played in the county championship. It was almost like an England trial.” Although he was never capped by E n g l a n d , B a y l i ss h a s a b s o l u t e l y n o re g re t s w h e n h e l o o k s b a c k o n h i s career. “I was always in the top four England centres and was a reserve for England’s tour to South Africa in 1973,” he said. “At one stage I was thought to be the hardest tackling centre in the country.” He also captained England Youth at Kingsholm in 1960 and has a record that most players from this area can only dream about. “I played 58 times for Gloucestershire and in five England trials,” he said. “I was never dropped by Gloucester. I played 430 -odd games for them.” Full story online.

Sustainable Sustainable e energy nergy The future of sustainable energy is looking bright : after last year ’s success of going a whole day without burning coal for energy, the U K i s i n v e s t i n g m o re t h a n ev e r i n renewable and sustainable energy. But why are we now putting such a fo c u s o n t h e s e e n e rg y t y p e s, a n d what exactly are the benefits?
TTypes ypes o off SSustainable ustainable EEnergy nergy I n 2 0 1 2 , 1 1 . 3 % o f a l l o u r p ow e r came from renewable sources. However, in 2017, this skyrocketed to nearly a third of all of the e l e c t r i c i t y d u r i n g s u m m e r m o n t h s. Overall electricity generation was lower than normal – thanks to longer days and warmer nights – but was largely driven by wind farms and relatively high wind speeds. In 2016, 11.5% of the total energy c a m e f ro m w i n d , a n d t h i s h a s substantial benefits: there’s less air pollution, it ’s more cost effective than fossil fuels, and it’s completely abundant and sustainable. This is the same with solar power, although this has had less success due to temperamental weather in the UK . Biomass is the least green of the renewable energies, as it relies on burning waste, and therefore still releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
The Local Answer
A SSustainable ustainable U Utopia topia Sustainable sources produce little to no CO2 within their life cycle (which i n c l u d es t h e m a k i n g , i n st a l l i n g , l i fe t i m e a n d r e m ov i n g o f t h e i r equipment) in comparison to what is produced by burning fossil fuels. If all sources, or even a large majority, were sustainable, then we would be able to remove the most damaging unsustainable sources and reduce the rate of global warming. This then leads to increasingly healthy air, water and land as it is
tainted with less pollution (currently linked with cancer and respiratory problems), and allows for us to live within healthy environments, even in big towns and cities (especially if this energy is used to power electric cars!). Equally, it can help to stabilise energy prices, as renewable sources are always there, meaning we are n ot s o d e p e n d e n t u p o n t h e fluctuating prices of oil or gas. Some energy providers work with more renewable suppliers than o t h e r s, a n d m o v i n g f ro m o n e to a n o t h e r c a n b e a s i m p l e sw i t c h . However, away from the power p l a n t , t h e re a re o p p o r t u n i t i e s to i n ve s t i n y o u r ow n s u s t a i n a b l e energy. Having rooftop solar panels fitted allows you to generate power during the day, which can be stored and t h e n u s e d w h e n yo u g e t h o m e to heat your water and cook your food. Avoid oil heaters and opt for electric ones instead, and have your home well insulated to avoid excess energy being used to heat the air a r o u n d y o u r h o u s e. L i t t l e c h a n g e s can lead to you being much greener, and possibly saving a few pounds!

TThe he FFine ine LLine ine The full ramifications of the recent collapse of construction giant Carillion are still to become clear, but it reminded me of, amongst other things, the fine line between success and failure. This is not the platform for political comment a b o u t t h e w h y s a n d w h e re f o re s o f w h e t h e r C a r i l l i o n should have been awarded some of the recent contracts that it got – there will be plenty of column inches allocated to that in other publications. No, this is a question of how a company employing 20,000 people crosses the line from being an expanding provider of services in various parts of the public sector to a disgraced company in liquidation that has left many smaller businesses in something of a mess.
TThe he g goal oal b becomes ecomes ssize ize a att a all ll ccosts osts Overtrading is a phenomenon that has plagued growing businesses for centuries. Companies that have aggressive expansion plans can be the darlings of industry and government , with confident , plausible entrepreneurs at the helm. Some of the companies succeed and are wellmanaged, but for others, the goal becomes size at all costs and the iceberg is just around the corner. An overaggressive attitude to growth too often leads to a company being unable to obtain sufficient finance for its operations, which will eventually lead to it simply running out of money. Sadly, before they start to see the bigger picture of the failure for which they are heading, companies that are overtrading will take short-term actions that they believe will help them through the cash flow difficulties they are facing. Actions such as slowing down the payment of bills to suppliers. Ultimately they achieve nothing more than delaying the inevitable for the company concerned, but the impact on their suppliers who have not been paid can b e c a t a s t ro p h i c . M a n y o f t h o s e s u p p l i e r s a r e s m a l l businesses that can ill afford customers such as Carillion taking 30 days to pay their bill, let alone the 90 or even 120 days that major companies seem to consider their right to take to settle their account . Sadly the eventual impact on some of these small businesses will be that they are forced to close.

The warning signs to those small businesses are obvious, but there is often nothing that they can do about it without putting their activity with that major customer at stake. In the end they may prove to have been better off without that big company ’s business, but by the time they work that out it’s too late. It’s long been good business practice not to have all your eggs in one basket and that remains true today. Regular readers of this column will be well aware of what I think of the business practices of large businesses, all of which are bullies to small local ones. I just hope the fall out from Carillion won’t do too much damage to the county’s small business economy.
