Is Is tthere here a ttiger iger in in tthe he ooffice? ffice? S t re ss a n d we l l - b e i n g a re h u g e t a l k i n g p o i n t s i n b u s i n e ss e s r i g h t now, and yet so few people seem to know what they are dealing with, let alone how to manage it. In nature, if an animal is under a perceived threat from a predator, chemicals are released by the brain to elicit the ‘fight or flight’ response. The animal then becomes super aware of three things: its body, its environment, and the time it has to get away or fight.

M Most ost p perceived erceived tthreats hreats are are ccreated reated iin no our ur m mind ind The human brain responds to perceived threat in the same way; the only difference is most of the perceived threats are created in our mind. We worry about what has happened and what might happen, rather than what is actually happening. We are scared of losing our job, the presentation we have to do, the car breaking down, getting deeper into debt, or our children not succeeding at school. We are literally t r i g g e r i n g o u r s t re s s re s p o n s e a n d

The Local Answer

t h r ow i n g o u r s e l ve s i n t o a state of overwhelm. We are letting fear dictate how we live our life, and how it affects our work . Stress isn’t actually the p ro b l e m ; a f t e r a l l i t i s j u s t the body ’s response to survival. The issue is our perception of danger. There isn’t actually a sabretoothed tiger in the office or classroom, but the brain doesn’t know that . We are telling it there is a life-threatening problem when there isn’t. If we keep going into stress mode, we f l o o d t h e b o d y w i t h c h e m i c a l s and force ourselves into a state where we are not functioning at our best. This, in turn, can create greater levels of fear and distress. Over time we literally hardwire these stress t r i g g e r s i n to t h e b o d y a n d s t a r t seeing m o re symptoms of frustration, irritation, anxiety, anger, confusion, weight gain, weight loss, heart problems, etc. We may even s t a r t l a b e l l i n g t h e s e s y m p to m s a s

depression, chronic anxiety, posttraumatic stress, dyslexia or OCD.

LLive ive w with ith a ‘‘creator’ creator’ cconsciousness onsciousness So, what is the answer? What we need to do is stop being so scared of what might happen, and rather decide what we want to happen, and then become the person who m a k e s t h a t h a p p e n . I f we b e l i e v e we are at the mercy of our life, we a re l i v i n g w i t h a ‘ v i c t i m consciousness’ and what we really need to do is live with a ‘creator consciousness’. Our thoughts and beliefs literally s h a p e o u r l i v e s, s o w e n e e d to b e able to identify what we believe and then consciously change our beliefs one at a time. Instead of reacting to l i f e a n d f e e l i n g l i k e a v i c t i m , we need to feel like a creator. Instead of looking to the past we need to look to the future, and become the person who makes it happen. We need to stop focusing on symptoms and start looking towards what we want to achieve and then g e t t h e h e l p we n e e d to s t a r t changing our thoughts one belief at a time. It ’s time to let the sabre-toothed tiger go, so we are free to create something better.

Resisting Resisting bbeing eing ooverwhelmed verwhelmed aand nd tthe he ppower ower ooff ‘‘completion’ completion’ I asked my online community what t o p i c I s h o u l d t a c k l e fo r t h e S e p te m b e r i ss u e a n d t h e re s p o n s e was, overwhelmingly, ‘being overwhelmed’! This is something I think all parents, and indeed most kids, struggle with in one form or another. From parental g u i l t a t n ev e r d o i n g e n o u g h , b e i n g enough or giving enough, right t h ro u g h to c h i l d re n being ov e r w h e l m e d a t m a n a g i n g t h e complex world we live in, social anxiety, endless projects, homework , hobbies and family ‘situations’, all w h i l s t g r ow i n g a n d c h a n g i n g s o quickly they hardly know themselves from one day to the next. S o w h a t o n e t h i n g c a n I o f fe r y o u today to help you ease whichever form you may be experiencing? My answer is ‘completion’. The art of finishing, of finalising, of creating a firm ending to something, no matter what, is one sure-fire way to limit, if not negate, this feeling completely. But how do you go about harnessing this magical mo jo? By simply committing to it and not stopping until it is done.

D Decide ecide w what hat ’’finished’ finished’ llooks ooks llike ike Decide what ‘finished’ looks like. We become overwhelmed when we live in a sense of the never ending; never ending laundry, never ending washing up, never ending arguments about whose turn it is to sit in the front seat. Anything which happens on repeat a n d y o u f e e l p o w e r l e s s to c h a n g e builds up this sense of helplessness. Set achievable targets and share them. For example: ✓ If I do the dishes after breakfast, I have completed. The Local Answer

✓ If I load the washing machine to r u n w h i l e I a m a t wo r k , I h a ve completed. Bring the family into it too. By introducing my old favourite, The Family Meeting, you can get everyone on the same page. For example: ✓ I will wash and dry, then sort into piles. You can then put away your own laundry. ✓ I will shop for groceries, we can share cooking, washing up and clearing the kitchen, and the kids can tidy the lounge before bed. Whatever works for your family, be creative and make it fun! If everyone feels the same sense of achievement for completing agreed tasks, you will see increased harmony within the home, and an increased sense of wellbeing overall. Creating little routines and encouraging everyone to notice what is going on around them can involve e ve r y o n e i n a c h i e v i n g t h e s t a t e o f ‘completion’. The next step is to celebrate and reward all successful

completions. Plan a day where mealtimes, snack times, coffee breaks, playtime, etc. are all rewards and celebrations of the completion already achieved.

CCreate reate rroutines outines where where ‘completion’ iiss tthe he ffocus ocus ‘completion’ By creating routines where ‘completion’ is the focus, life becomes simpler and a little less stressful. For example: ✓ A piece of homework before and after dinner, rather than dinner followed by all the homework . ✓ A few jobs around the house, then a coffee break and a magazine rather t h a n w o r k i n g n o n - s to p a l l d a y a n d n e g l e c t i n g y o u r s e l f u n t i l yo u f e e l frazzled and exhausted. Now turn your attention to yourself. How can you feel complete, that your day is done and it is time to chill out? R e l a x i n g i n a h o t b a t h p e r h a p s, o r maybe some meditation? Watching your favourite series on Netflix? Whatever ‘completion’ looks like to you, sit back and enjoy it, you earned it!

L LEARN EARN SO SO YOU YOU CAN CAN EARN EARN – BECOME BECOME A PROFESSIONAL PROFESSIONAL Life seems more hectic than ever and ‘time poor ’ is a phrase that many of us now use to describe our lifestyles. With an increasing number of people being expected to work long hours, it ’s not surprising that some of us are reevaluating our work-life balance. We now live in a society where we don’t have to stick with one job for life, so retraining is an option if you want to try a different career. The number of people choosing

to have more than one job has also increased. For some, it ’s a much-needed way to increase a wage, yet for others, it ’s a way to improve fulfillment in their lives. The service industry is booming as the number of selfemployed continues to rise. The benefit of many service industry roles is that they allow for part-time as well as full-time hours, providing greater flexibility around other life commitments. At Cheltenham School of Complementary Therapy & Beauty, we aim to help you achieve

a renewed lifestyle with qualifications in massage, facials, reflexology, aromatherapy, waxing, lash manicure, brow and treatments and much more. Being a Complementary Therapist or Beauty Therapist is a great role. Feeling like you are making a difference in someone’s life, however small, makes working something to look forward to.

We’ve been analysing our decisions with the aim of making better ones when we’re fatigued. “We’ve got to be a lot more clinical when we get opportunities to score.” Those opportunities are likely to be fewer than last season, of course, because the Pats will now be playing in South West Premier after last way, seems to have been around for a long time. We’ve been quite successful at this level for a few years in the past and we’d like to reestablish ourselves in the division.” The step up means an even greater commitment by the players and that i s s o m et h i n g t h at T h o m p s o n , w h o has been playing 20 -odd games a season for the club since he made his debut in 2009, is fully aware of. “Yes, it is an unwritten rule,” said t h e c l u b c a pt a i n , “ b u t at t h e s a m e time no one gets paid to play at the Pats. The 25-times capped Welsh star was referring to the amount of work Smith h a s d o n e t o d ev e l o p h o c k ey i n Gloucestershire since he moved to the area in 1980. Smith has played and coached hockey all over the county – he still coaches today – and is also a past president of the Gloucestershire H o c k ey A s s o c i a t i o n . H e i s c u r r e n t l y vice-president of the GHA and the evidence of the hard graft he has put in over the years is plain to see. H i s a c h i ev e m e n t s a r e m a n y b u t when told of Archer ’s comment he said modestly: “I’m not a legend.” Born in Birmingham, the father-of five played much of his hockey while he was in the Royal Air Force. His job took him all over the world – Germany, Cyprus and Singapore to name a few countries – and it was while he was in Cyprus that he first showed an ability to innovate, an a b i l i t y t h a t h a s s h o n e t h ro u g h f o r many decades. “I started a hockey league for mixed teams in Cyprus,” he said. “There were 13 teams but I introduced one simple rule – only ladies were allowed in the D. “It was such an important rule because when you watched men p l a y i n g m i x e d h o c k ey t h ey n e ve r passed to the ladies, they always wanted to do it all themselves. “But by allowing only the girls to go in the D it meant they had to pass otherwise their team wouldn’t score goals. “It also meant you didn’t have the m e n s m a s h i n g t h e b a l l a g a i n st g i r l goalkeepers.” Smith was very much still playing hockey in those days – “I started off as an inside left and ended up at leftback ,” he chuckled – and he continued t o p l ay w h e n h e m ov e d to

Dancing Dancing lleaves eaves and and conker conker ttrees rees A s t h e b r i g h t f l o we r s o f s u m m e r begin to fade, the rust-coloured charm of autumn begins. This year the autumn equinox takes place on Sunday 23rd September. This is when the length of night and day is a l m o st e q u a l a s t h e s u n s h i n es directly on the equator. For me, autumn is my favourite time of year. There is a chill in the air where the crisp leaves dance, but there is still enough warmth from the sun to enjoy those everchanging woodland walks.

Horse chestnut trees bud in the winter and are covered in a sticky residue. In the spring, as the

air starts to warm, the glue-like residue begins to melt away, and the bud starts to open revealing the flower structure and large leaves. The flowers blossom into drapes of y e l l ow a n d w h i te t h r o u g h o u t t h e tree, the yellow of which turns to pink once pollinated by insects. A robust green skin forms, housing a soft , creamy substance which squirrels love to eat, so spikes grow on the outside to deter them from breaking through and eating what will soon be a shiny new conker. By the arrival of the autumn, if they haven’t already due to infection, the conkers will be ripe and ready to fall to the ground. At this time squirrels will eat the ripe conkers but also bury others that may turn into future horse chestnut trees if buried before they dry out.

Our new neighbours always complement us on our well behaved dogs as we walk them calmly past, as their own two dogs strain at their leads, barking and carrying on with ferocious frenzy. They assume that my veterinary skills extend to faultless animal training and behavioural control, which I confess is more than wishful thinking! Tassie, the older dog, took years to calm down and walk sensibly on a lead, and even now in her more senior years she shows a distinct lack of patience for young, excitable puppies who she will snap at or growl at if they approach with puppy happiness and enthusiasm. Bart is much more disappointing in terms of model behaviour. Even after 6 years he pulls persistently on his lead, loves to sniff people’s crotches and thinks that any dog his size or bigger wants to eat him. He’s still prone to jumping up at people in excitement, which for a 30kg dog is not ideal, and the noise both dogs make when the front door is knocked is deafening. Still, on the list of undesirable behaviour their own failings are mostly bearable. They aren’t aggressive – after some initial excitement they generally settle down when we have friends over – and the majority of their walks are off lead so the pain of being pulled down the road is usually short lived.

N No od dog og iiss sso ow well ell b behaved ehaved that that some some e embarrassment mbarrassment iisn’t sn’t inevitable inevitable In all honesty I don’t know any dog owners who don’t wish their dogs were better behaved on some level. No dog is so well behaved that some embarrassment isn’t inevitable occasionally. Some dogs bark incessantly, some are neurotic, some believe the best defence is a good offence, and some rub their bottoms along the living room carpet just when guests arrive for dinner. In the vet clinic some need muzzling just to have their nails cut and a few need sedating just to get close enough to examine safely. Like children, they have the potential to make us feel like failures in our ability, or lack thereof, to train them effectively, but for all of their (or our) failings we wouldn't swap them. Their behavioural oddities are part of what makes them so endearing. That’s not to say improvement is not to be aspired to, and your vet clinic can recommend dog trainers or classes that can improve even the most delinquent of dogs. However, if it’s any consolation, we all share a sense of failure when it comes to our pet’s behaviour occasionally and we should console ourselves that their idiosyncrasies are also part of their appeal. Only Bob the cat in our household seems to avoid leaving me feeling inadequate as a pet owner on a regular basis, but only because, like most cat owners, I am aware that he trains me and not the other way around!

Charlton Kings Kings Pa Parish rish C Council ouncil CK Charlton Newent Onion Fayre, described as Gloucestershire’s greatest, largest and most successful one day free festival, returns again this year for the 23rd consecutive year on Saturday 8th September 2018. From a charter granted to Newent by King Henry III in the 13th Century, it has now become a street festival o f fo o d , d r i n k , m u s i c , e ve n t s, exhibitions, fun fair, activities and merriment, which regularly attracts more than 15,000 visitors each year. The Fayre is a very big draw for visitors with in excess of 150 stalls around the town, a large Food Hall, two stages for music bands and a separate ‘Funion Zone’ near the lake especially for children. The Onion Show, staged in the Memorial Hall, is also unique – class exhibits can only be from the Onion Family, and there are children’s classes as well. Exhibitors come from all over the UK to compete for the cash prizes and trophies, making for fierce competition. The Onion Eating Contests for men and women attract many entries each year and take place in the afternoon on the main stage. The Onion Show is affiliated to the National Vegetable Society and therefore always has a reputable NVS judge for the exhibits. For all information on the Fayre, and especially for entering the contests, please visit newentonionfayre.org. Alternatively, for general enquiries contact: onions@newentonionfayre.net

Conservation Conservation iin n Charlton K ings Charlton Kings C h a r l t o n K i n g s h a s r i c h a rc h a e o l o g i c a l a n d h i s t o r i c interests, containing three each of Cheltenham’s six scheduled ancient monuments and seven conservation areas. The parish also has over a hundred listed buildings and structures. The St . Mary ’s conservation area has two distinct character areas. The ‘old village’ relates to the area around the church which gives a feel for the rural origins of a village that grew alongside Cheltenham to provide agricultural produce and labour to its bigger neighbour. The roads are narrow – not designed for today’s traffic – with circulation around a church that has dominated the heart of the old village for over 800 years. Additionally, the rows of red brick houses on and around Copt Elm Road were planned and built, as one, at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries as housing for the growing middle class in Charlton Kings.

A fforgotten orgotten a and nd ssecret ecret place place The Bafford conservation area contrasts with the suburban sprawl that has subsequently surrounded it . The character is of a forgotten and secret place, protected by narrow lanes and high walls, sitting in the bottom of the wooded valley created by the Lilley Brook , where the alms houses and their green surroundings hark back to an earlier time. Cudnall Street is the third conservation area, which was known as London Road before the New London Road was built in 1825. It was once part of the main route between Oxford and Cheltenham, although this is hard to believe when looking at the volumes of traffic on the A40 today. More suited to horse traffic, Cudnall Street and the small, steep streets leading off it retain the scale and character of an earlier time. This is also the location of perhaps the most famous of Charlton Kings’ many literary associations. Lewis Carroll and Alice Liddell were regular visitors to a house in Cudnall Street that was owned by Alice’s grandparents. Alice was the heroine for ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’, and the mirror that inspired the story ‘Through the Looking-Glass’ is said to be in that house. The Parish Council’s Parish Plan will highlight the fascinating history of Charlton Kings which will be promoted and made readily available to residents and visitors.

A new ‘Mission: Impossible’ entry brings another opportunity to see what kind of ridiculous stunts Tom Cruise will put himself through for our viewing pleasure. The sixth instalment of the popular franchise comes in the shape of ‘Mission: Impossible: Fallout’. The film brings all the action, stunts and special effects we’ve become used to and it could end up being one of the best action films released this year. Cruise, now 56, is fantastic in his role as Ethan Hunt, a man for whom actions speak louder than words. The story is very simple to follow and focuses more on amazing stunts and perfectly choreographed fighting scenes. The two and a half hours flew by which is always a good sign. There are several incredible action scenes that simply have to be seen on the big screen, including an epic final sequence, which takes place over the Kashmir mountains. It ’s definitely worth the cost of a cinema ticket for that scene alone. Full review online.

This is a far cry from the usual memoir. Maggie O’Farrell, author of ‘The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox’ and ‘The Hand That First Held Mine’, which won the 2010 Costa award, has written of her own seventeen brushes with death. The book is not written in chronological order and each chapter is headed by a part of t h e b o d y – l u n g s, i n t e s t i n e s, cranium, etc. – which relate to the incident being described. Some chapters are finger tingling and others just touch on near escapes. One wonders if she should really stay clear of the sea! She has an encounter with a knife thrower, her plane suddenly loses height, she has a machete held a g a i n s t h e r t h ro a t , a n d t h e o p e n i n g c h a p t e r i n vo l ve s meeting a man on a walk who tries to strangle her with his binocular strap! CCheltenham heltenham b band and m making aking tthe he rright ight noises noises ‘The Strays’ have built up a strong following in Gloucestershire in recent years. Known for their high energy performances, the band are looking to build on the success of 2018, a year that has seen the Cheltenham-based quartet earn plenty of plaudits for their crowd-pleasing performances. With recent gigs at the Witney Music Festival and a headline performance at Cheltenham’s Summer Jam event , the band are enjoying a real breakthrough year and lead singer Estelle Chamberlain is certainly enjoying the extra attention that comes with their increased popularity. She said: “We’ve had a really hectic summer so far, it’s been an amazing few months. We’ve performed pretty much every weekend, it’s been very busy but at the same time a whole lot of fun. We played at the Lechlade Festival earlier this summer which was a great experience, the crowd

were great, and the atmosphere was really positive. We were invited to several other festivals and we’ve also been playing at some great pubs and music venues across the county as well.” The band’s recent performances have caught the eye of many astute j u d g es h e re in musical Gloucestershire, with two awards

finding their way onto Estelle’s mantelpiece. She continued: “2018 has been an amazing year for us. We managed to win the Tadstock Battle of the Bands and we were voted best band at Sounds of The Cotswolds 2018. “All the hard work that we’ve put in is starting to show. There are so many great music festivals here in Gloucestershire that we’d love to play so the awards are very helpful in increasing our profile. It means a lot to get recognised.” Estelle is joined in the band by Sam Cordery, Gary Chamberlain and Krisztian Jakab, and the flamboyant lead singer says her band mates complement each other well. She continued: “Our current line-up has been in place for nine months. We welcomed our new bassist, Krisztian, into the band at the start of the year.” Full story online.

Let Let n nature ature g grow row iin n your your home home As we start to head towards autumn and winter, the idea of gardening in cold and wet conditions may not be particularly appealing. There is, however, a way to overcome this – bring your garden indoors. T h e re a r e m a n y b e n e f i t s o f introducing plants to your home, and it doesn’t have to cost the earth. Whatever your budget, timeframe or experience, you can make your h o m e p l a n t f r i e n d l y w i t h r e l a t i ve ease.

CColour olour A vase of fresh flowers is a simple way to give an instant burst of colour to any room in your house. Whether you coordinate the flowers with your interior colours, or simply opt for your favourite bunch, they’re sure to keep the rooms in your home bright as we head into the darker months of the year. If buying a bunch of flowers every week is out of your budget, why not opt for artificial flowers instead? They require little maintenance and can

be displayed for however long you wish. Some look so authentic, your guests may have difficulty deciding if they’re real or not! Try rotating your f l ow e r s b e t w e e n r o o m s e ve r y month or so as an easy way to keep yo u r i n te r i o r s f r e s h , w i t h n o additional cost.

Mental M ental H Health ealth We’re all aware of the positive feeling we get after spending time in nature – whether that’s a walk in the countryside or a stroll along the beach. Plants do wonders for our mental health, so it’s only right that we should dot them around the house, especially the rooms in which we spend most of our time. S t u d i e s h a ve s h ow n t h a t a s we l l a s p u r i f y i n g t h e a i r i n o u r h o m e s, houseplants can increase positive feelings and reduce sadness, anxiety and stress. They enhance feelings of c a l m , a n d h av e b e e n fo u n d to improve our focus and productivity – great for people who work from home.

Those of you who don’t have regular access to a garden or green space of your own could significantly b e n e f i t f r o m i n t r o d u c i n g p l a n t s, flowers or even a mini herb garden to your interiors.

Green G reen FFingers ingers If you simply can’t live without a bit of gardening in your life, having h o u s e p l a n t s c a n h e l p to k e e p t h a t connection to the outside world. You can make it as simple or complicated as you like – there are houseplants out there for all abilities, so don’t be scared if you’re not naturally gifted with green fingers. If you’re a gardening novice, start with one plant in one room and go from there. If you’re well-practised in the art of horticulture, you can be a little more adventurous. The Royal Horticultural Society has a great guide for choosing the right plant(s) fo r y o u r h o m e o n t h e i r w e b s i t e (www.rhs.org.uk) – it ’s called ‘Houseplants: choosing the best’. Remember, we’re not trying to recreate Jumanji in our homes – you don’t want plants to take over your property and your life! Even a small a d d i t i o n o f g re e n to yo u r i n t e r i o r s can go a long way. Please note that some plants are toxic to pets (and humans), so a little research before purchasing is advised.

Watch Watch yyour our w water ater uusage sage Hot weather inevitably leads to water shortages in the UK , especially after such hot summers like the one just past. These tips will help to reduce your water consumption at a time where it is really needed, and if you implement them year-round, they could also lead to much lower water bills!

What What sshould hould I a avoid void doing? doing? Hosepipe bans, while an inconvenience for avid gardeners, ensure that hundreds of litres of water are not used when only a few would be necessary. Try instead to use watering cans (especially on areas l i k e f l owe r b e d s ) to l i m i t t h e amount of water that is spread over t h e g a rd e n . B e a s s u r e d t h a t t h e grass, while looking dry and brown, will become green again once it rains, and doesn’t need additional watering. A l s o t r y to avo i d t a k i n g l o n g showers which, although tempting to cool down, use between ten and twenty litres of water a minute. Have a go at timing your average

What What ccan an I adapt adapt tto o save save water? water? Try using a cistern displacement device, which most water companies p rov i d e f re e o f c h a rg e . This displaces around a litre of water in the cistern of your toilet , meaning it f l u s h e s w i t h o n e l i t re o f water less (which mostly isn’t needed anyway). In the kitchen, always try to run the dishwasher on a full load of dishes; wash up any that you need immediately with a little water and washing up soap. VAT VAT CChanges hanges oonn tthe he W Way ay Next April will be a key time in the life of VAT, as it reaches its 46th birthday in the UK . It seems to have been around for a lifetime longer than that. First it will have to cope with all the changes that our exit from the EU brings. At the same time HMRC is demanding that most VAT-registered traders comply with their new rules for Making Tax Digital (MTD). As if those two changes weren’t enough, the government is consulting on the benefits of a significant reduction in the VAT registration threshold. Far be it for me to proffer a view on the impact that the UK’s exit from the EU will have on businesses. The government doesn’t have a clue what the terms of our departure will be and there is still a strong chance that we will end up with what the British public actually voted for – leaving Europe. Full stop. MTD is going to make life very interesting for any business that is over the VAT registration threshold and registered for VAT. All such businesses, whether companies or selfemployed traders, will have to keep their VAT records and complete their returns every quarter using digital software. If they don’t have it, but engage an accountant, he/she will have to do the online work for them. It applies from 1st April 2019 to any business that is obliged to be registered; interestingly those who opt to be registered, but whose t u r n o ve r i s c u r re n t l y l e ss t h a n t h e £ 8 5 , 0 0 0 m a n d a to r y registration level, can choose not to comply with MTD and keep their records/submit their returns as they have always done. Slightly bizarre, but that ’s what the Treasury has elected to do.

M MTD TD w will ill b be eg good ood ffor or b businesses usinesses Once we’ve got over the initial hiatus, MTD will be good for businesses as it will improve their record-keeping and produce more management information to help proprietors to make informed decisions. It ’s a shame that it takes a piece of government legislation to make some business owners see those benefits. A change to the VAT registration threshold would have a significant impact on small businesses. The government is not threatening to tinker; it is planning a wholesale change. Options being considered include a reduction in the threshold to maybe half (yes half!) of the current level. The argument is based on the fact that our threshold of £85,000 is substantially higher than other countries in the EU/OECD, where the average level is £29,000. If the threshold is reduced, logically it should increase the VAT take for the Treasury. However, there must be a risk that it will fuel the black economy and drive traders who will be competitively disadvantaged by the change to resort to measures that have largely become a thing of the past to manage their recorded turnover below the registration limit. This would be a retrograde step and the government should think long and hard about such an impact. They have taken a strong stance to date in helping the smallest of businesses to minimise red tape and stay within the tax rules. Let’s hope they don’t bow to European pressure one last time!
