H Hockey’s ockey’s Roy Roy Smith Smith is is an an ‘absolute ‘absolute legend’ legend’ When one-time Wales international hockey player Lucie Archer spoke to The Local Answer earlier this year the name Roy Smith came up in conversation. “Absolute legend” said Archer without a moment’s hesitation. The 25-times capped Welsh star was referring to the amount of work Smith has done to develop hockey in Gloucestershire since he moved to the area in 1980. Smith has played and coached hockey all over the county – he still coaches today – and is also a past president of the Gloucestershire Hockey Association. He is currently vice-president of the GHA and the evidence of the hard graft he has put in over the years is plain to see. His achievements are many but when told of Archer ’s comment he said modestly: “I’m not a legend.” Born in Birmingham, the father-of five played much of his hockey while he was in the Royal Air Force. His job took him all over the world – Germany, Cyprus and Singapore to

The club in question are Tewkesbury Athletic – a team formed by a group of ex-Tewkesbury School pupils and who will be competing in the Cheltenham League in the coming campaign. They will line up in Division Four alongside 12 other teams and John Griffiths, one of the driving forces behind the new club, can’t wait for the season to get started. “We’ve got about 20 to 25 players,” said 24-year-old Griffiths, who is hoping to play in centre midfield. “I think the aim is to finish in mid-table and maybe have a good cup run, that would be nice. We’re hoping to have a solid season.”

But he’s only 29 – a n d a yo u n g 2 9 at t h at b e c a u s e he’s only just had his birthday – and that means he has Charlie Sharples plenty more years left at the top level of the game. And it’s the thought of running out onto Gloucester ’s new ‘HERO’ hybrid surface that is one of the things that has driven Sharples on in pre-season training over the past few weeks. My son Stuart played alongside me and now coaches in New Zealand. “I was very proud to play with him in the same team, it was great to wear the same shirt as him.” Pretty soon Smith senior was coaching as well as playing. And while Smith’s coaching skills were obvious, his administrative skills were just as impressive because he ran county tournaments for under-11s and under-13s for boys and girls for 20 years from 1990. James H James Hillier illier llooks ooks aahead head to to new new sseason eason w with ith cconfidence onfidence Things are certainly moving on apace a t C h e l te n h a m T i g e r s R u g b y C l u b a s they look ahead with some confidence to the new season in Western Counties North. One of the things that hasn’t changed is the 1st XV captain – James Hillier will lead the side for a fifth season and that ’s most definitely a positive as well because although he lives some 20 miles away in Upper R i ss i n g t o n , t a l k to H i l l i e r fo r a fe w minutes and it ’s clear he is a Cheltenham Tigers man through and through. The 26 -year-old, who plays in the second row or back row, first played for the club’s under-11s in the early noughties and apart from a two-year spell with Cheltenham Saracens – when he helped them win a p ro m o t i o n – h e h a s b e e n w i t h t h e club ever since. “Cheltenham are a really, really good club,” he said. “I started with them when I was quite young and went all the way through the minis and juniors and then into the Colts before playing for the first team.” A lot has changed at the club since he first started – not least the move to their current home at The Newlands some 10 -plus years ago – but Hillier is certainly not one of those people who is anti-change. Quite the opposite in fact and he is excited by what the club’s new-look management team can add to the flagship team this season. Two of them – Ross Nelmes and Leroy Hughes – are Cheltenham boys through and through while the third, Jack Petelo, is a cousin of Gloucester legend Terry Fanolua and has joined the club from Old Richians. N e l m e s h a s t a k e n o n t h e ro l e o f first-team manager while Hughes is the club’s new head coach. Petelo, who was born in Samoa and has played rugby in New Zealand, has joined as a coach. “We’ve got a really good management team,” enthused Hillier. “Ross Nelmes was involved with the United and has always been a Cheltenham man, just like Leroy,

Cheltenham won the Cheltenham Combination Senior Cup in April

who played in the first team alongside our chairman Steve Ratcliffe back in the day. “And Jack Petelo is a really good b l o k e w h o s a i d h e l i k e d w h e re t h e club are going.” And Petelo, who lives in Bishop’s Cleeve, will certainly have been impressed by the new artificial grass p i tc h t h a t w i l l b e u s e d f o r t h e f i r s t time at The Newlands this season as we l l a s t h e s p a n k i n g n ew c h a n g i n g rooms that have just been built. “ T h e n ew p i t c h w i l l s u i t o u r s t y l e 100 per cent,” added Hillier. “We play an expansive style of rugby so it will be ideal. It ’s a privilege to call The Newlands our home ground with all the new facilities.” Cheltenham’s supporters will be hoping that the performances on the pitch reflect the new-found confidence at the club and the signs were certainly good at the back end of last season. A four-game winning run in March and April saw them secure their place in Western Counties North for another season and they also won the Cheltenham Combination Senior Cup, while the 2nd XV won the Junior Cup. While that was obviously a good way to finish, it couldn’t hide some of the problems that the club had faced for much of the league campaign –

most notably the fact that they conceded 872 points in their 26 games. “We had a meeting and we know we must address our defence,” admitted Hillier. “We conceded the most points in the division and it cost us dearly. We struggled for player consistency in terms of availability but we’ve addressed that and identified what we want to achieve.” So what is the aim this season? “We want to be in the top four by Christmas,” said Hillier. “If all is going well, who knows, we could push for the top two. There’s no reason why we can’t , there is so much talent at the club. We want to make Newlands Park a bit of a place to come, a bit of a fortress. It ’s really important for morale to go up to Christmas unbeaten at home.” Hillier clearly believes that the good times are just around the corner for the club. “We’ve had a hard three or four years but we’ve stabilised,” he said. “There’s a lot going on at the club and i f w e g e t s o m e g o o d re s u l t s t h a t should help us to attract new players. “That will help us build and it could have a snowball effect . It ’s a long term thing but we want to get Cheltenham back to where they were – in the national league.”

Ia am, m, I a am, m, I a am, m, SSeventeen eventeen Brushes Brushes with with Death Death by Maggie O’Farrell

A new ‘Mission: Impossible’ entry brings another opportunity to see what kind of ridiculous stunts Tom Cruise will put himself through for our viewing pleasure. The sixth instalment of the popular franchise comes in the shape of ‘Mission: Impossible: Fallout’. The film brings all the action, stunts and special effects we’ve become used to and it could end up being one of the best action films released this year. Cruise, now 56, is fantastic in his role as Ethan Hunt, a man for whom actions speak louder than words. The story is very simple to follow and focuses more on amazing stunts and perfectly choreographed fighting scenes. The two and a half hours flew by which is always a good sign. There are several incredible action scenes that simply have to be seen on the big screen, including an epic final sequence, which takes place over the Kashmir mountains. It ’s definitely worth the cost of a cinema ticket for that scene alone. Full review online.

This is a far cry from the usual memoir. Maggie O’Farrell, author of ‘The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox’ and ‘The Hand That First Held Mine’, which won the 2010 Costa award, has written of her own seventeen brushes with death. The book is not written in chronological order and each chapter is headed by a part of t h e b o d y – l u n g s, i n t e s t i n e s, cranium, etc. – which relate to the incident being described. Some chapters are finger tingling and others just touch on near escapes. One wonders if she should really stay clear of the sea! She has an encounter with a knife thrower, her plane suddenly loses height, she has a machete held a g a i n s t h e r t h ro a t , a n d t h e o p e n i n g c h a p t e r i n vo l ve s meeting a man on a walk who tries to strangle her with his binocular strap! She escapes and reports it to the police who are disinterested, but the man finds another victim with disastrous consequences. Full review online.

New Gloucestershire N ew term term for for G loucestershire cchoir hoir One of Gloucestershire’s most active choirs is gearing up for a new term of rehearsals and performances. The Choir Factor has become synonymous for providing opportunities to enthusiastic vocalists across the county, and their members are p re p a r i n g f o r a n o t h e r b u s y te r m which gets underway on 3rd September. The Choir Factor ’s Musical Director and Founder, Esther Bettis, has been a music teacher for over 20 years as well as being an accomplished pianist , guitarist and violin player. Her early career was spent as a piano teacher in Surrey, which continued when she moved to Gloucestershire in 2003. It was in 2007 that Esther devised her plan to create her very own choir. She explained: “I wanted to run a choir for a very long time. I first had the idea when I was young, probably the same time I started secondary school. It was the day that Diana and

Choir members alongside G4

Prince Charles got married, The Sound of Music was on the TV and I vividly remember being blown away by it . I knew from that very moment that music and singing was what I wanted to b e i n v o l ve d i n . I s e t u p a c h o i r when I was at school and we used to sing at all the music festivals in Kent, we had a great time. “We start a brand-new term during the first week of September. There’s f o u r we e k l y c h o i r s h e l d i n

Tewkesbury, Cheltenham, Quedgeley and Gloucester. Our singers pay a fee every term which then entitles them to turn up to as many rehearsals as they want at our four venues. Some singers attend two or three sessions a week which shows the enthusiasm they have. “We sing a lot of modern pop songs from artists like Paloma Faith, and e ve n s o n g s f r o m f i l m s s u c h a s ‘ T h e Greatest Showman’. Our whole ethos i s b a s e d a ro u n d h av i n g f u n , s o rehearsals and performances are always very relaxed as well as being educational.” E s t h e r h a s m a n y fo n d m e m o r i e s from the last decade, with several performances that will stay long in the memory. She continued: “We’ve performed alongside G4, a four-piece vocal group who reached the final of the X Factor back in 2004 and have gone on to be a really successful group.” Full story online.

entertainment that would have been around during the First World War, then after the interval we’ll be performing dramas based on the events of the Second World War. I’ve written three short dramas based around the two wars which we’re going to act out. “There’s a great mix of stuff going on, it’s going to be a wonderful evening of entertainment. It would be great to get a big crowd in to raise money for such a fantastic charity. We’d love to sell more than one hundred tickets, I’m sure the people of Gloucestershire will support us. “I’ve been involved with the Bishops C l e ev e P l ay e r s f o r j u s t o ve r t h r e e decades. If you’re a gardening novice, start with one plant in one room and go from there. If you’re well-practised in the art of horticulture, you can be a little more adventurous. The Royal Horticultural Society has a great guide for choosing the right plant(s) fo r y o u r h o m e o n t h e i r w e b s i t e (www.rhs.org.uk) – it ’s called ‘Houseplants: choosing the best’. Remember, we’re not trying to recreate Jumanji in our homes – you don’t want plants to take over your property and your life! Even a small a d d i t i o n o f g re e n to yo u r i n t e r i o r s can go a long way. Please note that some plants are toxic to pets (and humans), so a little research before purchasing is advised.

Watch Watch yyour our w water ater uusage sage Hot weather inevitably leads to water shortages in the UK , especially after such hot summers like the one just past. These tips will help to reduce your water consumption at a time where it is really needed, and if you implement them year-round, they could also lead to much lower water bills!

What What sshould hould I a avoid void doing? doing? Hosepipe bans, while an inconvenience for avid gardeners, ensure that hundreds of litres of water are not used when only a few would be necessary. Try instead to use watering cans (especially on areas l i k e f l owe r b e d s ) to l i m i t t h e amount of water that is spread over t h e g a rd e n . B e a s s u r e d t h a t t h e grass, while looking dry and brown, will become green again once it rains, and doesn’t need additional watering. A l s o t r y to avo i d t a k i n g l o n g showers which, although tempting to cool down, use between ten and twenty litres of water a minute. Have a go at timing your average

s h ow e r l e n g t h a n d t h e n shave a minute or two off t h e t i m e. A l s o i n t h e b a t h ro o m , av o i d f l u s h i n g anything other than toilet paper down your toilet, as i t u s u a l l y r e q u i r e s m o re water to get it through the p i p e s , a n d i f yo u h ave a dual-flush toilet , always t r y to u s e t h e l ow e s t setting first.

What What ccan an I adapt adapt tto o save save water? water? Try using a cistern displacement device, which most water companies p rov i d e f re e o f c h a rg e . This displaces around a litre of water in the cistern of your toilet , meaning it f l u s h e s w i t h o n e l i t re o f water less (which mostly isn’t needed anyway). In the kitchen, always try to run the dishwasher on a full load of dishes; wash up any that you need immediately with a little water and washing up soap. If your dishwasher has an ‘eco’ setting, try this

o u t , a s yo u m ay f i n d t h a t i t g i v e s t h e s a m e re s u l t s w h i l e u s i n g l e ss water! Remember to always fill up your sink with water to clean your dishes instead of letting the water run continuously, as this saves both water and soap.

What What a about bout d drinking rinking water? water? In hot weather, this is the most important use of water! If you only want to drink very cold water, try p u t t i n g a f u l l b ot t l e o r j u g i n t h e fridge, as this prevents wasting water while you wait for the tap to run cold. Only put what you need into the kettle, as this avoids the water becoming stagnant and being thrown away, or boiled several times, which wastes energy! The Local Answer
