Moving your body – and better still being out in the fresh air – increases production of dopamine in the brain, meaning you don’t have to source it elsewhere via food. The harsh reality is that constantly giving in to your cravings isn’t doing you any favours – if you keep eating your favourite treat, the threshold of the reward is raised each time, meaning it will take more and more of the treat to gain satisfaction. Symptoms of both of these conditions can include: • Shortness of breath while completing everyday tasks • Wheezing in cold weather • A persistent cough • Producing more phlegm than usual These symptoms may appear all the time, or get worse when you have an infection or breathe in smoke or fumes. Resisting Resisting bbeing eing ooverwhelmed verwhelmed aand nd tthe he ppower ower ooff ‘‘completion’ completion’ I asked my online community what t o p i c I s h o u l d t a c k l e fo r t h e S e p te m b e r i ss u e a n d t h e re s p o n s e was, overwhelmingly, ‘being overwhelmed’! This is something I think all parents, and indeed most kids, struggle with in one form or another. From parental g u i l t a t n ev e r d o i n g e n o u g h , b e i n g enough or giving enough, right t h ro u g h to c h i l d re n being ov e r w h e l m e d a t m a n a g i n g t h e complex world we live in, social anxiety, endless projects, homework , hobbies and family ‘situations’, all w h i l s t g r ow i n g a n d c h a n g i n g s o quickly they hardly know themselves from one day to the next. S o w h a t o n e t h i n g c a n I o f fe r y o u today to help you ease whichever form you may be experiencing? My answer is ‘completion’. The art of finishing, of finalising, of creating a firm ending to something, no matter what, is one sure-fire way to limit, if not negate, this feeling completely. But how do you go about harnessing this magical mo jo? By simply committing to it and not stopping until it is done.

D Decide ecide w what hat ’’finished’ finished’ llooks ooks llike ike Decide what ‘finished’ looks like. We become overwhelmed when we live in a sense of the never ending; never ending laundry, never ending washing up, never ending arguments about whose turn it is to sit in the front seat. Anything which happens on repeat a n d y o u f e e l p o w e r l e s s to c h a n g e builds up this sense of helplessness. Set achievable targets and share them. For example: ✓ If I do the dishes after breakfast, I have completed. The Local Answer

✓ If I load the washing machine to r u n w h i l e I a m a t wo r k , I h a ve completed. Bring the family into it too. By introducing my old favourite, The Family Meeting, you can get everyone on the same page. For example: ✓ I will wash and dry, then sort into piles. You can then put away your own laundry. ✓ I will shop for groceries, we can share cooking, washing up and clearing the kitchen, and the kids can tidy the lounge before bed. Whatever works for your family, be creative and make it fun! If everyone feels the same sense of achievement for completing agreed tasks, you will see increased harmony within the home, and an increased sense of wellbeing overall. Creating little routines and encouraging everyone to notice what is going on around them can involve e ve r y o n e i n a c h i e v i n g t h e s t a t e o f ‘completion’. The next step is to celebrate and reward all successful

completions. Plan a day where mealtimes, snack times, coffee breaks, playtime, etc. are all rewards and celebrations of the completion already achieved.

CCreate reate rroutines outines where where ‘completion’ iiss tthe he ffocus ocus ‘completion’ By creating routines where ‘completion’ is the focus, life becomes simpler and a little less stressful. In nature, if an animal is under a perceived threat from a predator, chemicals are released by the brain to elicit the ‘fight or flight’ response. The animal then becomes super aware of three things: its body, its environment, and the time it has to get away or fight.

M Most ost p perceived erceived tthreats hreats are are ccreated reated iin no our ur m mind ind The human brain responds to perceived threat in the same way; the only difference is most of the perceived threats are created in our mind. We worry about what has happened and what might happen, rather than what is actually happening. We are scared of losing our job, the presentation we have to do, the car breaking down, getting deeper into debt, or our children not succeeding at school. t h r ow i n g o u r s e l ve s i n t o a state of overwhelm. We are letting fear dictate how we live our life, and how it affects our work . Stress isn’t actually the p ro b l e m ; a f t e r a l l i t i s j u s t the body ’s response to survival. The issue is our perception of danger. There isn’t actually a sabretoothed tiger in the office or classroom, but the brain doesn’t know that . We are telling it there is a life-threatening problem when there isn’t. If we keep going into stress mode, we f l o o d t h e b o d y w i t h c h e m i c a l s and force ourselves into a state where we are not functioning at our best. This, in turn, can create greater levels of fear and distress. Over time we literally hardwire these stress t r i g g e r s i n to t h e b o d y a n d s t a r t seeing m o re symptoms of frustration, irritation, anxiety, anger, confusion, weight gain, weight loss, heart problems, etc. We may even s t a r t l a b e l l i n g t h e s e s y m p to m s a s

LLive ive w with ith a ‘‘creator’ creator’ cconsciousness onsciousness So, what is the answer? What we need to do is stop being so scared of what might happen, and rather decide what we want to happen, and then become the person who m a k e s t h a t h a p p e n . I f we b e l i e v e we are at the mercy of our life, we a re l i v i n g w i t h a ‘ v i c t i m consciousness’ and what we really need to do is live with a ‘creator consciousness’. Our thoughts and beliefs literally s h a p e o u r l i v e s, s o w e n e e d to b e able to identify what we believe and then consciously change our beliefs one at a time. Instead of reacting to l i f e a n d f e e l i n g l i k e a v i c t i m , we need to feel like a creator. Instead of looking to the past we need to look to the future, and become the person who makes it happen. We need to stop focusing on symptoms and start looking towards what we want to achieve and then g e t t h e h e l p we n e e d to s t a r t changing our thoughts one belief at a time. It ’s time to let the sabre-toothed tiger go, so we are free to create something better.

The The SSaturday aturday CClub lub Unveiled by Sir John Egan 30 years ago at the 1988 British International Motor Show, the world first saw a radical concept car from Jaguar. The J a g u a r X J 2 2 0 b e c a m e t h e p o s te r supercar of the early 1990s – I know as it was on my bedroom wall! The concept XJ220, powered by a V12-engine, had four-wheel drive and was designed by ‘The Saturday Club’; a group of 12 specialist e n g i n e e r s a n d d es i g n e r s w h o worked in their spare time with the help of about forty of Jaguar ’s suppliers. The shape of the car was designed by Keith Helfet, the South African born Royal College of Art graduate who had become Jaguar ’s Senior Sports Car Designer, and later designed the XK180 and F-Type concepts.

The cars were to be produced at a facility in Bloxham, Oxfordshire, which later became the Aston Martin DB7 factory. However, the XJ220 was never really intended to be a production car – merely a demonstration of the company ’s abilities – and further engineering requirements resulted in to the significant c h a n g es specification of the car. Most notably the replacement of the Jaguar V12 e n g i n e by a t u r b o c h a rg e d T W R V 6 engine and rear wheel drive rather than all-wheel drive. For many people, who had put down a deposit and also for the motoring press, the reduction in engine size by half, the move from naturally aspirated to

A total of just 281 cars were produced by the time production ended, each with a retail price of £470,000 in 1992, making it one of the most expensive cars at that time. However, in a turn of fate, w i t h o n l y 2 7 5 c a r s ev e r b e i n g produced, it has made the XJ220 even rarer and more collectable. The XJ220 recorded a top speed of 212.3mph (341.7km/h) during testing by Jaguar at the Nardo test track in Italy. This made it the fastest p r o d u c t i o n c a r f ro m 1 9 9 2 t o 1 9 9 3 . According to Jaguar, an XJ220 p ro to t y p e m a n a g e d a N ü r b u rg r i n g lap time of 7:46:36 in 1991, which was faster than any production car lap time before it. Rhys Oakley heads up the coaching set-up while second row Ryan Stephens will lead the side in South West One West after their Western Counties North t i t l e -w i n n i n g campaign last time out. It ’s a level that Coney Hill have played at before and committee man Simon Baldwin is confident they have what it takes to make a success of it this time around. Mind you, it’ss not going to be easy. “Lydney have come down and St Ives have come up,” said Baldwin. “Launceston are in the division too so that’s two Cornish trips straight away! “There are no easy games in this league and I would be very happy if we could finish in mid-table or the top half. We’ve just got to find our feet. “There are going to be a few teams with far more resources than us but they ’ve all got to come to

The current vice-chairman first pulled on the club’s shirt 50 years ago a n d h e h a s b e e n c l o s e l y a s s o c i a te d with them ever since. The players returned to pre-season in early July in good heart after last season’s North Gloucestershire Combination Senior Cup final success at Kingsholm. Their win over Coney Hill made it three in a row and they will certainly be looking to make it a fab four come the end of 2018/19. A top three finish in South West One East would also be good with Price saying: “That’s the aim and anything after that is a bonus.”

Gloucester… they’ll always receive a warm welcome at The Metz Way! “What we’ve got to do is make sure we win our home games and try to win a few away.” The flagship team certainly managed that last season and as well as wrapping up the league they also reached the last four of the RFU Intermediate Cup and the final of the North Gloucestershire Combination Senior Cup. hockey player Lucie Archer spoke to The Local Answer earlier this year the n a m e R oy S m i t h c a m e u p i n conversation. “ A b s o l u t e l e g e n d ” s a i d A rc h e r without a moment’s hesitation. The 25-times capped Welsh star was referring to t h e a m o u n t of wo r k S m i t h h a s d o n e t o d e ve l o p hockey in Gloucestershire since he moved to the area in 1980. Roy Smith Smith has played and coached hockey all over the county – he still coaches today – and is a l s o a p a s t p re s i d e n t o f t h e Gloucestershire Hockey Association. He is currently vice-president of the GHA and the evidence of the hard graft he has put in over the years is plain to see.

“If we can show the same attitude as last season we should do okay,” added Baldwin. “We need to have the attitude of let’s go out and give it our all. When we come off the pitch we should have nothing more to give.” B a l d w i n i s d e l i g h te d t h a t R h y s Oakley has taken on the head coach role. Oakley, a back row, has enjoyed a stellar career which includes three caps for Wales. He numbers Bristol, Newport Gwent Dragons, Yorkshire Carnegie, CS Bourgoin, Northampton and Birmingham Moseley among his former clubs before joining Hartpury for the start of the last campaign. And Baldwin is grateful for the support his club receive from Hartpury. “We have to thank John Barnes and Mark Cornwell,” he said. “Without the continued support of those two guys we wouldn’t be able to achieve what we have achieved.” Full story online. H i s a c h i ev e m e n t s a re m a n y b u t when told of Archer ’s comment he said modestly: “I’m not a legend.”

Sharples h Sharples hoping oping G Gloucester loucester make ffast ast sstart tart tto on ew sseason eason make new Charlie Sharples is one of those players who, in the nicest possible way, seems to have been around for a long time. But he’s only 29 – and a young 29 at that because he’s only just had his birthday – and that means he has plenty more years left at the top level of the game. That’s great news for Gloucester and their fans of course and it’s great news for Sharples himself who is very much hoping for an injury-free season after t h e s t o p - s t a r t n a t u re o f h i s l a s t campaign. Injuries meant he was unable to get o u t o n t h e p i tc h i n f ro n t o f t h e Kingsholm faithful as much as he would have liked in 2017/18. And it’s the thought of running out onto Gloucester ’s pitch that is one of the things that has driven Sharples on in pre-season training over the past few weeks. He’s done it many times before – he’s played more than 240 games for the club – but this season it will feel just that bit different because he will be running out onto the club’s spanking new ‘HERO’ hybrid surface which is a mixture of natural grass and artificial grass fibres pitch and which was installed this summer. “Yes, I’m very excited about playing on the new pitch,” said the four-times capped England wing. “Kingsholm has always had a good pitch but for obvious reasons it wasn’t always so good in the middle of the winter. “The new pitch should be brilliant for

s p e e d g u y s l i k e m e. I t s h o u l d h e l p everyone to be fair and will really suit the style of play we want to adopt.” That expansive style of play introduced by head coach Johan Ackermann was seen to great effect for large parts of last season and the arrival of England fly-half Danny Cipriani has only heightened the level of anticipation at Kingsholm ahead of the new season.

““This This iiss a vvery ery e exciting xciting ttime ime ffor or Gloucester Gloucester ffans” ans”

“I don’t like setting targets,” a d m i t t e d S h a r p l e s, “ b u t o n e t h i n g I will say is that this is a very exciting time for Gloucester fans. We’ve got the new pitch, the rebranding of the club and all the new signings.” Those new signings include a host of players from South Africa – Franco Mostert , Jaco Kriel, Franco Marais, Ruan Dreyer and Gerbrandt Grobler – as well as former England back Matt Banahan, but it is the arrival of Cipriani that has captured the imagination of many fans. “He’s an exciting player,” said Sharples. “He showed exactly what he’ll bring us when he played for Wasps last season and now he’s back playing for England. But we’ve got two top 10s in Danny and Owen Williams. They’ll be fighting to play and it’s great for the club.” Sharples is also desperate to play – particularly after the frustrations of what was his testimonial season – and w h i l e h e s e es h i m s e l f p r i m a r i l y a s a winger he’s happy to p l a y a t f u l l - b a c k as well if it means a place in the starting line-up. He has already started preparing for that future by linking up with Team-i – a company who have launched a brand new series of training courses for businesses. The company is the brainchild of Gloucestershire-based Tim Thurston and Exeter back row Kai Horstmann and the training courses give an insight into the teamwork and planning strategies of professional r u g by p l ay e r s a n d h ow t h ey c a n b e applied to the workplace. The training programme – called Team-i Training – features interactive and fun classroom modules, coupled with keynote appearances from p ro f e s s i o n a l r u g b y p l ay e r s o n t h e courses, which is where Sharples comes in. Sharples helps to coach and develop delegates as part of their coursework and he said: “Rugby is, I believe, the ultimate team sport and it has been great to work with Team-i to demonstrate to businesses how the skills and experience I have learned as a player can be transcended into the workplace. “It’s something I enjoy doing.” Full story online.

Newent Onion Fayre, described as Gloucestershire’s greatest, largest and most successful one day free festival, returns again this year for the 23rd consecutive year on Saturday 8th September 2018. From a charter granted to Newent by King Henry III in the 13th Century, it has now become a street festival o f fo o d , d r i n k , m u s i c , e v e n t s, exhibitions, fun fair, activities and merriment, which regularly attracts more than 15,000 visitors each year. The Fayre is a very big draw for visitors with in excess of 150 stalls around the town, a large Food Hall, two stages for music bands and a separate ‘Funion Zone’ near the lake especially for children. The Onion Show, staged in the Memorial Hall, is also unique – class exhibits can only be from the Onion Family, and there are children’s classes as well. Exhibitors come from all over the UK to compete for the cash prizes and trophies, making for fierce competition. The Onion Eating Contests for men and women attract many entries each year and take place in the afternoon on the main stage. The Onion Show is affiliated to the National Vegetable Society and therefore always has a reputable NVS judge for the exhibits. For all information on the Fayre, and especially for entering the contests, please visit newentonionfayre.org. A Ann important important m month onth September is an important month for the city for many reasons, including that Gloucester Day falls within it . Gloucester Day represents the lifting of the Siege of Gloucester during the Civil War and although historically it falls on 5th September, we tend to celebrate it now on the first Saturday of the month. The marking of the event was reintroduced a few years ago by Town Crier Alan Myatt and now includes a church service and a parade through the city. Adding to the spice of the occasion, this year Gloucester Rugby start their Premiership campaign at home to Northampton Saints that day.

This year we mark the 375th anniversary of the Siege. The city’s Parliamentarian forces, under the command of Colonel Edward Massie (often written as Massey), held out against a much larger Royalist army, changing the course of the war and thus our country’s history. Massie was an interesting character to say the least. He was aged only 23 during the Siege, which he directed from what is now The Old Crown pub at the bottom of Westgate Street. He later switched sides to the Royalists, was knighted by Charles II and went on to be a Member of Parliament for Gloucester. Legend has it he was offered the post of Governor of Jamaica (nice work if you can get it!) but never took up the position. His mother Ann was sister of Richard Grosvenor, the 1st Baronet and ancestor of the Duke of Westminster. As part of the Gloucester History Festival, one of Massie’s successors as MP for Gloucester, Richard Graham, will be giving a talk on him entitled “Hero, Traitor or Opportunist”. It takes place at Blackfriars Priory on Sunday 9th September at 2pm. Tickets are £8 and available from www.gloucesterhistoryfestival.co.uk or the Tourist Information Centre on 01452 396572.

I did invite the current Duke of Westminster to join us to celebrate one of his forebears. Apparently he is busy that weekend but sends his good wishes for the event. The Siege of Gloucester is one of the most important chapters in the city ’s rich history. Some say we have n e ve r b e e n fo rg i ve n f o r t a k i n g t h e s i d e o f t h e Parliamentarians. Charles II wreaked his revenge by knocking down our city walls. We may not have much of them left to show, but this anniversary is a great way in which we can bring our history to life. @ @cllrpauljames cllrpauljames

Jeff continued: “My neighbours were both policemen, they took me along to a concert as a guest. I joined in singing a few songs and from there they asked me if I’d

like to join. That was 15 years ago. There’s no limit on membership and we’re always keen to welcome new faces to the choir. You don’t need to have any association to the police, if you’re keen to sing we’d love to hear from you.” The undoubted highlight of the year for the choir comes in the shape of their annual tour, which took them to north Wales and Liverpool this year. Jeff continued: “Every year we go away for three or four days and squeeze in as many performances as we can. In April this year we stayed in Llandudno and sang at the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral which was just a spectacular setting. “The building itself was incredible, it’s not a traditional cathedral, in fact it was built in the 20th century. After our performance at Liverpool we sang at Chester Cathedral on our way back to Gloucestershire.” Full story online.

A new ‘Mission: Impossible’ entry brings another opportunity to see what kind of ridiculous stunts Tom Cruise will put himself through for our viewing pleasure. The sixth instalment of the popular franchise comes in the shape of ‘Mission: Impossible: Fallout’. The film brings all the action, stunts and special effects we’ve become used to and it could end up being one of the best action films released this year. Cruise, now 56, is fantastic in his role as Ethan Hunt, a man for whom actions speak louder than words. The story is very simple to follow and focuses more on amazing stunts and perfectly choreographed fighting scenes. The two and a half hours flew by which is always a good sign. There are several incredible action scenes that simply have to be seen on the big screen, including an epic final sequence, which takes place over the Kashmir mountains. It ’s definitely worth the cost of a cinema ticket for that scene alone. Full review online.

This is a far cry from the usual memoir. Maggie O’Farrell, author of ‘The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox’ and ‘The Hand That First Held Mine’, which won the 2010 Costa award, has written of her own seventeen brushes with death. The book is not written in chronological order and each chapter is headed by a part of t h e b o d y – l u n g s, i n t e s t i n e s, cranium, etc. – which relate to the incident being described. Some chapters are finger tingling and others just touch on near escapes. One wonders if she should really stay clear of the sea! She has an encounter with a knife thrower, her plane suddenly loses height, she has a machete held a g a i n s t h e r t h ro a t , a n d t h e o p e n i n g c h a p t e r i n vo l ve s meeting a man on a walk who tries to strangle her with his binocular strap! She escapes and reports it to the police who are disinterested, but the man finds another victim with disastrous consequences. Full review online.

FFamed amed musician musician tto op play lay G Gloucester loucester g gig ig Acclaimed musician Steve Pledger says he’s excited to make his debut performance in Gloucestershire this month. It’s been a particularly busy year for the award-winning musician, who has been touring all over the UK playing tracks from his three albums. On Wednesday 5th September he will be p l a y i n g a t C a fé R e n é , o n e o f Gloucester’s premier music venues. “I’m really looking forward to visiting Gloucester and playing at such a great venue,” Steve said. “I’ve heard so many great things about Café René f r o m m u s i c i a n s w h o h av e p l a ye d t h e re b e f o r e. I set out it wasn’t with the aim of winning awards, I just wanted to write and play music, but to get recognised by industry media and fans means the world to me. I love what I do, I still get excited every single time I get on stage and perform, whether that ’s playing at a small venue in front of a few dozen people or performing for hundreds of people at a larger event.” One of Steve’s most memorable performances came earlier in the s u m m e r w h e n h e o p e n e d fo r B i l l y Bragg at Durham Town Hall. Steve continued: “That was a very special gig. Billy is a musician I admire, there was an amazing crowd in who were really supportive, it was one of those perfect nights every musician dreams of. A lot of the songs I write are quite political so to be able to step out in front of Billy ’s audience was a very special occasion.” Full story online.

This year the autumn equinox takes place on Sunday 23rd September. This is when the length of night and day is a l m o st e q u a l a s t h e s u n s h i n es directly on the equator. For me, autumn is my favourite time of year. There is a chill in the air where the crisp leaves dance, but there is still enough warmth from the sun to enjoy those everchanging woodland walks.

Let Let n nature ature g grow row iin n your your home home As we start to head towards autumn and winter, the idea of gardening in cold and wet conditions may not be particularly appealing. There is, however, a way to overcome this – bring your garden indoors. T h e re a r e m a n y b e n e f i t s o f introducing plants to your home, and it doesn’t have to cost the earth. Whatever your budget, timeframe or experience, you can make your h o m e p l a n t f r i e n d l y w i t h r e l a t i ve ease.

CColour olour A vase of fresh flowers is a simple way to give an instant burst of colour to any room in your house. Whether you coordinate the flowers with your interior colours, or simply opt for your favourite bunch, they’re sure to keep the rooms in your home bright as we head into the darker months of the year. If buying a bunch of flowers every week is out of your budget, why not opt for artificial flowers instead? They require little maintenance and can

be displayed for however long you wish. Some look so authentic, your guests may have difficulty deciding if they’re real or not! Try rotating your f l ow e r s b e t w e e n r o o m s e ve r y month or so as an easy way to keep yo u r i n te r i o r s f r e s h , w i t h n o additional cost.

Mental M ental H Health ealth We’re all aware of the positive feeling we get after spending time in nature – whether that’s a walk in the countryside or a stroll along the beach. Plants do wonders for our mental health, so it’s only right that we should dot them around the house, especially the rooms in which we spend most of our time. S t u d i e s h a ve s h ow n t h a t a s we l l a s p u r i f y i n g t h e a i r i n o u r h o m e s, houseplants can increase positive feelings and reduce sadness, anxiety and stress. They enhance feelings of c a l m , a n d h av e b e e n fo u n d to improve our focus and productivity – great for people who work from home.

Those of you who don’t have regular access to a garden or green space of your own could significantly b e n e f i t f r o m i n t r o d u c i n g p l a n t s, flowers or even a mini herb garden to your interiors.

Green G reen FFingers ingers If you simply can’t live without a bit of gardening in your life, having h o u s e p l a n t s c a n h e l p to k e e p t h a t connection to the outside world. You can make it as simple or complicated as you like – there are houseplants out there for all abilities, so don’t be scared if you’re not naturally gifted with green fingers. If you’re a gardening novice, start with one plant in one room and go from there. If you’re well-practised in the art of horticulture, you can be a little more adventurous. The Royal Horticultural Society has a great guide for choosing the right plant(s) fo r y o u r h o m e o n t h e i r w e b s i t e (www.rhs.org.uk) – it ’s called ‘Houseplants: choosing the best’. Remember, we’re not trying to recreate Jumanji in our homes – you don’t want plants to take over your property and your life! Even a small a d d i t i o n o f g re e n to yo u r i n t e r i o r s can go a long way. Please note that some plants are toxic to pets (and humans), so a little research before purchasing is advised.

Watch Watch yyour our w water ater uusage sage Hot weather inevitably leads to water shortages in the UK , especially after such hot summers like the one just past. These tips will help to reduce your water consumption at a time where it is really needed, and if you implement them year-round, they could also lead to much lower water bills!

What What sshould hould I a avoid void doing? doing? Hosepipe bans, while an inconvenience for avid gardeners, ensure that hundreds of litres of water are not used when only a few would be necessary. Try instead to use watering cans (especially on areas l i k e f l owe r b e d s ) to l i m i t t h e amount of water that is spread over t h e g a rd e n . B e a s s u r e d t h a t t h e grass, while looking dry and brown, will become green again once it rains, and doesn’t need additional watering. A l s o t r y to avo i d t a k i n g l o n g showers which, although tempting to cool down, use between ten and twenty litres of water a minute. Have a go at timing your average

s h ow e r l e n g t h a n d t h e n shave a minute or two off t h e t i m e. A l s o i n t h e b a t h ro o m , av o i d f l u s h i n g anything other than toilet paper down your toilet, as i t u s u a l l y r e q u i r e s m o re water to get it through the p i p e s , a n d i f yo u h ave a dual-flush toilet , always t r y to u s e t h e l ow e s t setting first.

What What ccan an I adapt adapt tto o save save water? water? Try using a cistern displacement device, which most water companies p rov i d e f re e o f c h a rg e . This displaces around a litre of water in the cistern of your toilet , meaning it f l u s h e s w i t h o n e l i t re o f water less (which mostly isn’t needed anyway). In the kitchen, always try to run the dishwasher on a full load of dishes; wash up any that you need immediately with a little water and washing up soap. If your dishwasher has an ‘eco’ setting, try this

o u t , a s yo u m ay f i n d t h a t i t g i v e s t h e s a m e re s u l t s w h i l e u s i n g l e ss water! B e t te r s t i l l , t r y to g e t i n to t h e habit of washing kitchen items by h a n d , to s av e n e e d i n g to u s e t h e dishwasher at all. Remember to always fill up your sink with water to clean your dishes instead of letting the water run continuously, as this saves both water and soap.

What What a about bout d drinking rinking water? water? In hot weather, this is the most important use of water! If you only want to drink very cold water, try p u t t i n g a f u l l b ot t l e o r j u g i n t h e fridge, as this prevents wasting water while you wait for the tap to run cold. Only put what you need into the kettle, as this avoids the water becoming stagnant and being thrown away, or boiled several times, which wastes energy! The Local Answer

VAT VAT CChanges hanges oonn tthe he W Way ay Next April will be a key time in the life of VAT, as it reaches its 46th birthday in the UK . It seems to have been around for a lifetime longer than that. First it will have to cope with all the changes that our exit from the EU brings. At the same time HMRC is demanding that most VAT-registered traders comply with their new rules for Making Tax Digital (MTD). As if those two changes weren’t enough, the government is consulting on the benefits of a significant reduction in the VAT registration threshold. Far be it for me to proffer a view on the impact that the UK’s exit from the EU will have on businesses. The government doesn’t have a clue what the terms of our departure will be and there is still a strong chance that we will end up with what the British public actually voted for – leaving Europe. Full stop. MTD is going to make life very interesting for any business that is over the VAT registration threshold and registered for VAT. All such businesses, whether companies or selfemployed traders, will have to keep their VAT records and complete their returns every quarter using digital software. If they don’t have it, but engage an accountant, he/she will have to do the online work for them. It applies from 1st April 2019 to any business that is obliged to be registered; interestingly those who opt to be registered, but whose t u r n o ve r i s c u r re n t l y l e ss t h a n t h e £ 8 5 , 0 0 0 m a n d a to r y registration level, can choose not to comply with MTD and keep their records/submit their returns as they have always done. Slightly bizarre, but that ’s what the Treasury has elected to do.

M MTD TD w will ill b be eg good ood ffor or b businesses usinesses Once we’ve got over the initial hiatus, MTD will be good for businesses as it will improve their record-keeping and produce more management information to help proprietors to make informed decisions. It ’s a shame that it takes a piece of government legislation to make some business owners see those benefits. A change to the VAT registration threshold would have a significant impact on small businesses. The government is not threatening to tinker; it is planning a wholesale change. Options being considered include a reduction in the threshold to maybe half (yes half!) of the current level. The argument is based on the fact that our threshold of £85,000 is substantially higher than other countries in the EU/OECD, where the average level is £29,000. If the threshold is reduced, logically it should increase the VAT take for the Treasury. However, there must be a risk that it will fuel the black economy and drive traders who will be competitively disadvantaged by the change to resort to measures that have largely become a thing of the past to manage their recorded turnover below the registration limit. This would be a retrograde step and the government should think long and hard about such an impact. They have taken a strong stance to date in helping the smallest of businesses to minimise red tape and stay within the tax rules. Let’s hope they don’t bow to European pressure one last time!
