IIngredients: ngredients: 300g puff pastry; olive oil; 1 finely chopped shallot; 100g baby spinach (remove the thick central stalks); 100g watercress (only use the leaves); 40g cream cheese; 2 tsp chopped dill (put the rest in the freezer to use next time); 1-2 tbsp creamed horseradish, depending on your taste; extra flour for rolling out; 2 salmon fillets at about 250g each, or as I used, a pack of 4 from the supermarket (490g) – remove the skins; 1 beaten egg; salt and pepper. M Method: ethod: 1 Wash the spinach and watercress leaves and tip onto a clean tea towel to dry. 2 Heat a drop of oil in a frying pan. Add the spinach, watercress and salt, and toss until the greens have just wilted. Tip into a sieve and squeeze out the water, transfer to a bowl. 3 Add another drop of oil and gently sauté the shallot, then add this to the spinach and watercress, leaving it all to cool. Then add the cream cheese, horseradish and dill and stir until it’s nicely mixed together. 4 Pop a sheet of greaseproof paper onto a baking tray then roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface into a 30cm square.

5 Pat your salmon fillets dry with kitchen towel then season with salt and pepper. Place your one or two fillets in the middle, then top with the spinach mixture. Pop the other one or two fillets on top. 6 Use both hands and lift the pastry to meet at the top so it just overlaps, trimming off any excess. Brush the edges with beaten egg and press firmly to make a seal. Brush both short ends and press together, cutting off any excess. There should just be a small gap between the salmon and the pastry seals. 7 Pop the parcel of salmon onto the baking tray with the seal on the bottom. Brush all over with the beaten egg and chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes. 8 Preheat the oven to 220°C (200°C fan/gas mark 7). Put the Wellington in the oven for around 35 minutes until golden brown. Leave to rest for a few minutes before slicing. I served mine with salad leaves and plum tomatoes.

Taking T aking a gap gap year year For young people with academic minds, there can sometimes seem to be a natural progression from school to college or university, or a drive to study a particular subject further in order to pursue a specific career. For others, there may be an uncertainty over which direction to take, or a calling to explore the big wide world. In this case, taking a gap year may be the way to go. If you are a young person coming to the end of your studies or an adult between jobs looking for a chan ge, you may have considered taking a year out to explore your options.

IImmerse mmerse y yourself ourself iin n o other ther ccultures ultures Travel is a great way to immerse yourself in other cultures and experience new things. Going to foreign lands can help you to gain an insight into other countries, their peoples and their customs, where you can see distinctive architecture, hear different languages, and savour diverse cuisines.

The Local Answer

Another idea could be to try out ideas – maybe careers you have considered but aren’t sure about. Therefore, you could do work some volunteering, shadowing or get a short-term job to get a taste of what’s out there and make some contacts for the future. Or you could combine travel with volunteering. If you search the internet, you will find there are numerous organisations you can book with, and you could go to wonderful places and work with an array of people – ideas could include elephant conservation in India, fruit picking in or New Zealand, teaching English in Peru. If you choose to volunteer with animals, ensure you have done thorough research and choose a reputable organisation to work with. Though before you pack in your employment or quit your studies, ensure you have prepared for your break. Have a solid plan To advertise call 0122 510500

in mind so that you don’t waste the months away – know your reasons for taking time out and have some aims of what you want to achieve. Save up some money – research what you want to do and the costs involved, then set a target to save up enough to fund your activities.

Consider C onsider b benefits enefits and and drawbacks d rawbacks Also consider the drawbacks as well as the benefits of having a year out. These may include finding it harder to readjust to the daily grind of work or study when you return, or paying out more than you expected, which could make you financially worse off than you were. Bear in mind that a gap year doesn’t have to be a whole year – you may choose three or six months to have some thinking time. When you do start to apply to university or look for paid employment, wider experience looks great on your CV, as it highlights you have gained many transferrable skills. So don’t just dream it, do it! Page 

IIntolerant ntolerant to to food! food! Over recent years there has been a dramatic rise in the number of people suffering with a food intolerance. We sometimes take for granted the amazing variety of food we have available to us in the UK, but this can often be processed and full of refined sugar. Nearly all foods require an enzyme for proper digestion. According to the British Allergy Foundation, enzyme deficiencies are a common cause of food intolerance. Certain chemicals in foods and drinks can cause intolerance – for example, amines and some foods have naturally-occurring chemicals that can have a toxic effect on humans. Food intolerance and food allergies are very different and the following ways show why.

Food Food A Allergies llergies • A reaction from your immune system as it mistakenly treats proteins found in food as a threat • Can rapidly trigger typical allergy symptoms, such as a rash, wheezing and itching,

after eating just a small amount of the food • Common food allergies in adults are fish, shellfish and nuts, and in children it’s usually milk, eggs, peanuts, other nuts and fish • Can be serious

pain, bloating, diarrhoea, migraines, vomiting and lethargy after eating, and they usually come on within a few hours after eating the food.

Food F ood IIntolerance ntolerance

The symptoms of a food intolerance can also be related to a number of other health conditions, so if you are experiencing them it is important to visit your GP to find out the cause. Your GP may ask for a skin prick test or order some blood tests to find the cause, neither of which are 100% reliable. Therefore, keeping a food diary is the best way to try to figure out what you might have an intolerance to. Note what you eat, what symptoms you experience and how long after eating the food they appear. Once you have a good idea which food is the problem, eliminate it from your diet for 2-6 weeks to see if the symptoms improve. Then if you want to, you can reintroduce the food gradually and see if the symptoms return.

• Does not involve your immune system – there is no allergic reaction, and it is never life-threatening • Causes symptoms that come on more slowly, often many hours after eating the problem food • Only results in symptoms if you eat reasonable amounts of the food (unlike an allergy, where just traces can trigger a reaction) • Can be caused by many different foods As food intolerance is not as serious as a food allergy, many people often ignore the symptoms and continue to suffer whilst eating the foods that might be causing the problem. Prom Prom perfection perfection A few months ago, my niece asked if I could review something that would also work for me to take her and some friends to their high school prom. Thinking cap on, we quickly agreed on the refined luxury of a Jaguar XJ. While the long-wheel base version would have offered more leg room, the shortwheel base version is still massive, so room for three prom-bound girls and their dresses in the back without issue. The ride was perfect – refined, elegant, luxurious, wafting along the roads with only a barely detectable rumble from the twin exhausts to bely the power that was on tap, should it be needed. Not that you would have heard the exhaust with the 825 watt stereo (complete with subwoofer) at the hands of my niece, whose music taste is actually very good as it turns out. I’ve kept the playlist she had prepared, but I listen at a slightly lower volume!

It’s easy to see why this is the car of choice for the British PM – comfort, space, luxury, but boy can it move if it needs to! The Local Answer

As far as gadgets go, it has plenty (including a TV tuner in the touchscreen display). Adaptive speed limiter with road sign recognition, 360 degree parking cameras and cross-traffic warnings for blind junctions – necessary with such a long car, in my opinion – and a really quite relaxing seat massager system. But that’s not what really grabbed my attention.

If you did take this beast on that journey, you can be assured you’d get there relaxed, in comfort and with plenty of luggage thanks to the spacious boot.

Comfortable C omfortable ffor or b both oth drivers and drivers and passengers passengers Usually when I review cars, I try and balance the features I liked and think are worthwhile by highlighting one or two things that I think are either unnecessary or that could work better. With this Jag though, I fear I may be beaten. It’s comfortable for both drivers and passengers, has plenty of space and all the refinement and technical know-how you would expect from the brand, and it goes like stink, should you need it to, as well. Yes, the price is a bit steep at just south of £75k, but it really is a master of many different tasks and in reality, the only complaint I have on that price tag is that I can’t afford it, but that’s not really something I can criticise the car for, is it? E Elizabeth lizabeth Morris Morris excited excited ffor or film film release release Growing up in Gloucestershire, Elizabeth Morris pursued her love of performing. After earning her ATCL diploma aged 18, she went on to study performing arts at the University of Gloucestershire. Elizabeth graduated in 2011 and, like many students leaving university, wasn’t sure on what the next step was. “When I left uni, I moved down to London not sure what I wanted to do. I’d always enjoyed writing so I started producing scripts, and it was around that time I met Martin Owen,” she explained. “We talked and started writing together and made our first film, ‘Abducted’. “We’ve now written four filmscripts together, three of which have been made.” ‘Abducted’ was the beginning of a great working relationship

Seth Johnson, Elizabeth – who also stars in the film – and Martin, who directed it, spent around a year perfecting the script. Following the completion of the script, the production company, Goldfinch, began the casting process, and brought on board Hollywood stars Gary Oldman and Jessica Alba. “It was amazing, my favourite filming experience yet,” said Elizabeth. “I spent a day handcuffed to Jessica Alba in a strip club for a scene! “She’s one of the nicest people I’ve ever worked with. “And to see Gary Oldman delivering lines you’ve written is surreal – that was a real ‘pinch me’ moment.” ‘Killers Anonymous’ is out in theatres and On Demand soon. ‘Yesterday’ follows Jack (Himesh Patel), a failing musician, who wakes up in a world where e v e r y o n e h a s f o r g o t t en The Beatles. So, naturally, as any struggling musician would, he desperately remembers all the lyrics to just about every Beat- Himesh Patel as Jack Malik. les single ever released, Picture: Working Title Films and, surprise surprise, becomes the biggest singer/songwriter in the world. Patel makes his film and singing debut as Jack Malik, and offers up a refreshing performance as a character with real soul, despite being stuck in many moral dilemmas. Writers Jack Barth and Richard Curtis ace the pace of the story, and the film is rife with intimate, heartfelt moments, which restore some joy in a world where The Beatles don’t exist. Eustace is an only child, brought up in an old people’s home in Weston-super-Mare. He escapes from his solitary existence by taking up the cello. His teacher, Carla Gold, introduces him to a new world of music, art and above all, friendships. Eustace’s parents, who have difficulties with their own relationship, have very little understanding of their son’s personality or his musical ability. Now in his fifties, Eustace tells this story whilst receiving radioactive iodine therapy for cancer of the thyroid. Patrick Gale perfectly describes the angst of an adolescent growing up and discovering his sexuality. The descriptions of cello playing are fascinating. Every character in the book is beautifully described. Full review online.

Exiled Exiled on on their their busy busy musical musical summer summer When Max Clutterbuck, Henry Robinson and Ethan Reeves used to sneak into the music rooms at Katharine Lady Berkeley’s School they may have imagined themselves performing to huge crowds, with adoring fans singing along. A few years down the line, and with the addition of guitarist Jack Berry, that dream has become reality as Exiled prepare to play at Y Not? Festival and Tramlines – two of the country’s biggest indie music festivals. “It’s unreal man,” said lead singer Max. “Me and Eth went to Y Not last year and watched bands play the stage we take to this year. It’s just nuts. “Being announced for Tramlines was a particularly proud moment; knowing BBC Introducing have picked your music

out of thousands of artists to best represent our region is huge.” Although the guys are now strewn around the country with their various day jobs, Exiled began here in Gloucestershire. Ethan and Max hail from Wotton-Under-Edge, and Henry from nearby Wickwar, whilst Jack originates from slightly

further afield in Brownhills near Birmingham, having joined the band later on. The boys describe their music as “a cocktail of indie, britpop and surf rock”, citing an array of influences from the world of music. Jack said: “We all draw on quite a wide range of genres, for example Henry is a big fan of EDM and I’m quite into heavier music than indie. “But we are all influenced by bands like You Me at Six and Catfish and the Bottlemen undoubtedly.” In a short space of time, Exiled have built up an impressive following. “Seeing and hearing people singing along is such a buzz,” said Ethan. “I can never stop grinning when I see it from the stage.” Full story online.

Stroud S troud Fringe Fringe returns returns after after year year o off ff The Stroud Fringe Festival returns this month with a host of shows, events and activities. The festival is organised and run entirely by volunteers, and due to its success and growth – visitor numbers reached around 25,000 in 2017 – the team took a fallow year to take stock and look ahead to 2019. “Because the event had got so big it was taking up huge amounts of time,” said Julie Howe, who is part of the organising group. “It also costs around £100,000 to put on the festival safely, with a large proportion of that going on things like health and safety, security and infrastructure. We wanted to take the time to make sure we were doing everything as well as possible and to look at a fundraising strategy.”

Action from the 2017 Stroud Fringe Festival

The festival has been running for over 20 years, having been first held in 1996. This year the Stroud Fringe will be held over the Bank Holiday weekend, from Friday 23rd to Sunday 25th August. “It’s the people who come that

make it special – it’s such a great atmosphere,” continued Julie, a graphic designer by trade. “We work very hard to bring a really varied programme, mixing local talent and national artists across many genres of music and arts. “There will hopefully be something for everyone – from music and comedy to kids workshops and street food. “Stroud Fringe is ultimately a community festival, it’s about celebrating the area we live in, the people and talent that’s here and bringing people together. “The five valleys is a vibrant and creative place and Stroud Fringe aims to showcase that and to present a wide variety of arts to as wide an audience as possible.” Full story online.

Add Add a splash splash of of colour colour I know that I keep giving you jobs to do in the garden, but one thing I would say is that you must make time to be able to sit out and enjoy your plot, no matter how big or small it is. Make sure you have a comfortable cushioned seat and a small table to place your cup of tea on – or glass of something cool and refreshing – and just sit and enjoy. This is what all the hard work is about!

K Keep eep w watering atering rregularly egularly Now for some more jobs. Pinch out the tops of tomatoes that are grown outside when there are three trusses of fruit, and keep on removing side shoots (unless they are bush tomatoes). Keep watering regularly or you could end up with blossom end rot where the ends of the tomatoes go brown. Keep watering and picking runner beans, as if you leave the pods on the plant it will stop producing flowers. Get neighbours to help themselves if you are away on holiday – it can be a bribe to get them to water the garden! Stand pots in the shade or in a child’s

If it is ready it should come away easily from the spur. Now is the time to cut back summer-fruiting raspberry canes such as ‘Glen Ample’ or ‘Malling Admiral’, as their harvest should be over. to stop pests and diseases taking over and to promote new canes to grow. At this time of year the garden can become a little boring. Sometimes a garden is really pretty in spring and early summer, but come August everything has flowered and finished and it looks tired.

B Brighten righten u up p a ttired ired b border order If this describes your garden you can do something about it by popping in some Annuals from the garden centre. They are full of delicious looking pots of Cosmos, Zinnias and others which will brighten up a tired border. Think about planting some of the later flowering perennials such as Echinacea purpurea (the mauve cone-flower), Rudbeckia (a lovely yellow daisy), and Asters (the good old Michaelmas daisies), which will flower well into autumn and come in colours that look stunning in the early evening light, and early mornings covered in dew. S Save ave the the red red squirrel squirrel Red squirrels are native to Britain, but the Victorians introduced the grey squirrel to the UK from North America. There are around 130,000 red squirrels left in areas of Wales, Northern England, the Isle of Wight and Scotland. It is a common misconception that grey squirrels kill the reds; in truth, the reds are more aggressive. The decline in red squirrels is partly due to the greys because they carry squirrel pox. This pox virus is often fatal to reds, but most greys that carry the virus are not affected by it.

The T he rred ed ssquirrel quirrel With a chestnut red coat that sheds twice per year, adult reds are about 20cm tall with an 18cm tail. During the autumn they gain about 12% of their body weight to prepare for winter. They have a white underbelly, and during the winter they have very pointed tufty ears. The Local Answer

They enjoy insects, seeds, bark, nuts, fruits, mushrooms and pine seeds or cones. Red squirrels love green acorns but so do the greys who often scoop up all the young acorns, so the reds don’t even get a look in.

The T he g grey rey ssquirrel quirrel Their grey coat can often have red patches, and their tails edged with white strands. Greys are bigger at around 30cm tall with a 25cm tail. They breed between January and April but can often have a second litter in the summer, just like reds having 3-4 kits at a time.

The T he b black lack ssquirrel quirrel There are about 25,000 black squirrels in the UK. They were first spotted over here about 90 years ago. Black squirrels are just a genetic mutation of grey squirrels.

How you How you can can help help red red ssquirrels quirrels There are things you can do to help red squirrels thrive. To advertise call 0122 510500

Feeding areas must be high up, especially if you have cats and dogs. In summer, food is much scarcer for squirrels, as the spring shoots have disappeared and autumn berries have not yet arrived. You can put out hazelnuts in the shell, sunflower seeds, pine nuts, apples and carrots. The most important thing is not to put food out if you also have grey squirrels visiting your garden. This is because they may spread the pox virus, which is fatal to the reds so you will be doing more harm than good. Also, if a road lies between your garden and a red squirrel nesting site, then please don’t put out food as they will have to cross to get to you, which is very dangerous. You can also plant raspberry, wild cherry, dog rose and crab apple in your garden to attract squirrels. Growing thorny plants will also deter any predators from attacking feeding squirrels. B Bring ring F French rench chic chic to to your your h home ome Whenever interior designers are asked about their sources of inspiration, they invariably say travel. Just back from my annual trip to Paris, one of my favourite cities, I have to agree. I have returned with a different perspective on my home and am bursting with new ideas. Here are my thoughts on what French style means to me and how you can bring some ‘French chic’ to your home.

S Simple imple e effortless ffortless sstyle tyle The French approach to decorating their homes reflects the way they dress – simple, minimal and uncluttered. Subtle colours and carefully curated accessories are key components to looking chic. Think white or grey walls and simple curtain treatments, accessorised with a favourite decorative piece or a few wellchosen modern artworks (they don’t have to be originals!).

An neutral eutral p palette alette w with ith a pop p op o off b bold old ccolour olour

items of furniture with contemporary pieces – and the French do this so well. Spotting bargains in flea markets is a national sport and they are not afraid to mix eras and styles. One friend has modern white leather sofas in the same room as an old vintage desk inherited from her husband’s family – they look great together.

Wall colours in French homes h ave tra di tio na ll y be en whi te , but I’ve noticed other neutrals are also being used like everpopular grey, but offset with sage green or chalky pink. They are also not afraid to use strong colours, such as teal, ochre or terracotta. I saw some vintage chairs covered in a bright gold and red striped fabric material and they looked amazing. Using vibrant, contemporary fabrics to recover old chairs always works.

I have noticed that my French friends don’t necessary spend any more money overall on their homes – but they use quality, natural materials wherever possible. Items in a Parisian home, particularly the kitchen, are always useful but lovely to feel and look at too. Linen bedding was in all the shops in Paris – and it doesn’t even matter if it looks crumpled!

on a more contemporary feel – think old garden furniture mixed with plain linen napkins, or mismatched dining chairs painted in soft chalky colours. Items of vintage china, basketware (preferably old) and traditional kitchen utensils. Old glasses and vases filled with bunches of meadow flowers or grasses complete the look. Furniture with a history is key, it really doesn’t have to be new or expensive. Secondhand or reclaimed is good – and, of course, very much in tune with the current approach to saving the environment. I am already planning to rummage around my local antiques market and second hand shops for bargains to upcycle! Wherever you are this summer, come home from your break with a new and fresh perspective on your living space. It may even lead to a new hobby. Page 2

A Are re you you being being misled misled byy packaging? b packaging? I recently discovered that there was an enormous issue with the green entwined arrows or three arrow outline recycling symbols (the Green Dot and the Mobius Loop if you would like to look them up) that you see on packaging on the shelves of most of our shops in the UK. The two arrows in different shades of green, green and white or black and white, and the three arrows in a circle are synonymous with recycling. I’ve always believed it to mean that the item of packaging can be recycled, however a recent video I saw exposed the truth and really shocked me.

Companies Companies p put ut m money oney b behind ehind rrecycling ecycling iinitiatives nitiatives Very often the items marked with these symbols can’t be recycled in the UK at all. The green arrows actually symbolise that the company that

The Local Answer

produces the product has put money behind recycling initiatives in other European countries, and in the case of the outline arrows, that the packaging is capable of being recycled, but maybe not in your local recycling plant, or even in our country. In fact, the Green Dot symbol is basically meaningless in the UK and yet you see it all the time. The main problem is that people see the symbol and automatically assume that you can put those items into the recycling boxes – I’ve done it myself on many occasions. Then they go off to the plants and cause havoc, as they actually can’t be recycled at all and someone has to remove them all.

Mislabelling M islabelling iiss a adding dding tto o the the confusion confusion So why do we still have them? Many of the companies that use this symbol have

vowed to take it off to prevent further confusion, but how long will it be until they are gone, and what about the companies that don’t remove them? This mislabelling is actually adding to the problem by jamming up the plants that are already overwhelmed with the scale of our waste. So next time you see this symbol, don’t be fooled into thinking that the packaging is automatically suitable for the recycling bins, as the chances are that they aren’t. Equally, don’t assume that they can’t go in – it’s probably best to just ignore it and check on your local council’s website to see.

With so With so many many different different policies, p olicies, it it can can seem seem overwhelming o verwhelming As if knowing what can be recycled isn’t tough enough without misleading symbols like that to throw you off! There are so many different types of packaging available now and so many different councils with different policies that it can seem overwhelming to even try. Luckily, a lot of the packaging we see on the supermarket shelves nowadays is clearly marked with a single line circle with an arrow at the end, and usually tells you in plain text as well. Hopefully the rest of the food producers that sell their products in this country will take note and follow suit to make it easier for us all to do our bit. Page 2

B Business usiness cconfidence onfidence The ‘B-word’ has divided the country and, at a macro-level, has created division and debate within communities, businesses and even families. It’s become synonymous with having no idea what the future holds. Any business that is stuck in such uncertain times, and there is an argument that all businesses are directly affected, struggles to deliver its business plan with any confidence. I have some sympathies for them, although I’ve met a few business owners who are simply blaming the ‘B-word’ for what are essentially their own management failings. When you’re running a business, the best thing to do is to manage those things that are within your control and contingency plan for those things that are outside it. Far too many business owners are blaming circumstances over which they can never have control for their own failings of business planning and/or management. For some it’s a crisis of personal confidence in an uncertain world, over which they feel they have no control. They are missing the point; they need to go back to the reasons why they set up in business in the first place and start backing themselves to delivering their original plan.

The key is to believe in yourself. If you don’t who is going to do it for you? I remember from cricketing days, if a bowler dropped a catch off his own bowling, how could he expect his colleagues to catch if it came their way. The same applies in business – take that catch off your own bowling and believe in yourself as a business leader, and those around will show support by taking their catches too. Of course, the B-word isn’t the only uncertainty that faces small businesses in the UK today. Concern over the impact of, and compliance with, new digital reporting rules to HMRC, increasing legislation (despite promises from successive governments to reduce red tape) and the ability to recruit skilled staff can all hold back a business entrepreneur who does not either have the expertise or experience to manage a situation. The message is clear – don’t stop believing in yourself and your ability to drive your company forward, whatever the outcome of those matters outside of your control.

R Rob ob S Stephens tephens h happy appy tto o llead ead ffrom rom ffront ront Rob Stephens is well known in Gloucestershire golf circles. Firstly he’s a very good player and, secondly, he’s also captain of the county’s seniors team. It’s a role that the just turned 58-year-old took on at the start of the season, having become eligible to play seniors golf three years ago. And Stephens, who plays for Minchinhampton Golf Club and helped Gloucestershire to reach the final of the county championship in his first season as a senior, thoroughly enjoys playing at the level. “There are some extremely good players,” he said, “the standard is very good and it’s getting better all the time.” Stephens, who plays off three – he played off one under the old handicap system back in the day – has been playing golf for well over 40 years. “I started when I was 14,” he said. “I could have played earlier because my dad and grandad

The 25-year-old took over from the long-serving Nick Trainor at the start of this season and although promotion back to Premier One of The West of Eng la nd P re mie r L eague is o ne of the stated targets after last season’s relegation, it is by no means his only aim. “Nick [Trainor] asked me about halfway through last season if I’d like to take over as captain this year and after a bit of thought I said ‘yes’, as long as I could do things a certain way,” explained Qureshi. “I want to look after the young players – Will Naish, Alex Russell,

both played, they were very good. It was a couple of weeks before my 14th birthday and I didn’t know what I wanted as a present so I said I’d like a set of golf clubs.” And Stephens, who hails from Shropshire, has never looked back, even though golf has never been his number one sport. “I played rugby for a long time,” he said, “rugby was my first love. If someone had told me after I’d played my last game Jack Worgan, Chad Trainor, Harry Senior. They are the future of the club.”

He’s not the only one who has done so much good for the sport over the years, of course, but the current chairman of Gloucestershire Table Tennis Association has certainly played his part in making sure that the game is readily accessible to anyone who wants to play it. JJoseph oseph Mills Mills wants wants Forest Forest G Green reen R overs tto ob uild o n llast ast sseason eason Rovers build on Joseph Mills ticked every box and more with Forest Green Rovers last season – his first with the League Two club. He helped the club reach the end-of-season promotion play-offs while firmly establishing himself as one of the best attacking full-backs in the division. The 29-year-old also ended the season as manager Mark Cooper’s choice as captain, so it’s fair to say that 2018/19 was a pretty good campaign for a player who had spent the previous two years playing more than 9,000 miles away in Australia. He played 44 games for Perth Glory – the same number as he played for Forest Green last season – and while he quickly adapted to the A-League Down Under, he just as quickly re adjusted to the cut and thrust of full time football in this country as well. That’s the sign of a good player, of course, and Mills said: “On a personal level it was good to play so many games last season and I was delighted to g e t th e ch a n c e t o c a p t ai n th e side.” And the captain’s armband is something th e one-time Southampton and Reading player would be happy to take on again this season if asked. “I think I can bring something to the team with the experience I have got,” he said, “but whether I’m captain or not I’m still the same player.” And while last season ultimately en ded in disappointment – they missed out on Wembley after losing 2-1 to Tranmere on aggregate in the play-off semi-finals – Mills is convinced there will be no ‘hangover’ when they get their 2019/20 campaign under way at home to Oldham Athletic on Saturday 3rd August. “It was good to reach the play-

Forest Green Rovers manager Mark Cooper

offs and although it was gutting at the time to lose it was a big achievement to get there,” said Mills. Indeed it was because the goahead club finished the season in fifth place, just five points off an automatic promotion spot and a dramatic 27 points and 16 places better off than the previous season, their first in the Football League. “If there is a down side to what we achieved last season, then it’s that some of the players get put in the shop window,” continued Mills. “We’ve lost a couple of last season’s squad but we’ve also signed a few as well. “The recruitment before last season was so good, you just have to trust the process. “We have got good players coming in and we just need to learn the lessons from last season.” So where do they need to improve? “We started off last season very well,” said Mills. “We were undefeated for a long time but we drew quite a lot of games

and quite a few of those we could have won. “We were ahead in quite a lot of games and we let leads slip. Maybe we have to be a bit more streetwise and be a bit more clinical to see out games. “If we can manage that better we should do well.” Mills believes that the playoffs are again a realistic aim. “If we don’t target that then we are selling ourselves short,” he insisted. “After last season the expectations have gone up but we know what we want as a squad. “The play-offs are the target but if the automatic promotion places are within reach at the midway point then we can reassess.” And for all the glory that comes with a Wembley play-off final win, Mills has been around the game long enough to know that winning promotion automatically is the best way to go up. “It’s a lot more stress-free,” he said. “Okay, so you haven’t got the euphoria of a play-off final win at Wembley, but if you win promotion automatically it’s all boxed off, it’s a great way to end the season.” Mills is spot on of course, although he knows it is a lot easier said than done. “We’ve got to build on last season,” he said, “there are some very good teams in this division.” After their opening day game against Oldham, Forest Green travel to Walsall seven days later. Rovers host Newport County on Saturday 31st August and four weeks later they travel to play Salford City on Saturday 28th September in another big game. Mark Cooper’s men travel to Cheltenham Town on Saturday 2nd November with the return game on Saturday 28th March.
