B Birthday irthday cake! cake! W We e couldn’t couldn’t let let our our 10th 10th Birthday Birthday pass pass without without sharing sharing a birthday birthday cake cake recipe, recipe, could could we?! we?! Ingredients: Ingredients: 225g caster sugar; 225g butter or margarine, softened to room temperature; 4 large eggs; 225g sponge flour, sifted; whipped double cream and raspberry jam for the middle; icing sugar to decorate. M Method: ethod: 1 Heat the oven to 200°C (fan 180°C/gas mark 5). Grease two 8 inch sandwich tins and then dust with flour. 2 In a large mixing bowl, beat the sugar and butter until you get a creamy texture. 3 Add the eggs one at a time and beat the mixture until it is combined. If there is a bit of separation in the mixture, just add a tablespoon of flour. 4 Fold in the flour a few tablespoons at a time. 5 Divide the mixture between the two sandwich tins and make sure the surfaces are level. Bake for about 20 minutes, or until the sponges are golden and a skewer comes out clean. 6 Once the sponges are cooked, leave them in their tins for 5-10 minutes and then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely. Whilst THE LOCAL ANSWER
you are waiting you could whip the double cream. 7 Spread a layer of jam on the bottom sponge, foll owed by a layer of cr eam . C aref ul ly pl ace the second sponge on top. 8 Dust the cake with some icing sugar to decorate and add the candles when you’re ready to sing Happy Birthday! T ips: Tips: 1 1.. Don’t open the oven to check your cakes until you are at least two thirds of the way through the total bake time. You don’t want to risk the sponges not rising properly. 2.. Using sponge flour instead of self-raising flour 2 makes the cake extra light. 3. 3. Because eggs can vary so much in size and weight, you can weigh them together and then use that amount for each of the sugar, butter and flour measurements. 4. 4. Whether you like to smother your cakes with butter cream, design magnificent creations using fondant icing, or prefer a simple dusting of icing sugar to finish your masterpiece, make sure you have fun while baking and decorating!

Anniversary Anniversar y jewellery jewelle The romantics among us will be aware of the age-old tradition of giving wedding anniversary gifts that have a different theme each year. Paper for the first anniversary, cotton for the second, leather for the third, and so on. As the years go by, gemstones and precious metals come to the fore, which can result in some really beautiful gifts being exchanged. Different anniversaries hold special meaning for different people, but I will highlight three of the major milestones where precious stones can be given to remember that very special day.
P Pearl earl – 3 30th 0th A Anniversary nniversary Pearls can be natural or cultured and it is often hard to distinguish between the two except in the price, natural being the more expensive. Pearls have historically been given to celebrate important milestones and they have rarely gone out of favour. A fascinating story of pearls dates back to 1918 when Lady Northcliffe, the wife of a press baron, had the wonderful idea of a fundraising campaign to support the war effort. She asked all her aristocratic friends
THE LOCAL ANSWER
to donate a single pearl – most ladies in that era wore them. The donated pearls would be restrung and auctioned to raise much needed funds for wounded troops. It became known as The Red Cross Pearl Appeal. Queen Alexandra was one of the first to donate and she was quickly followed by most of British society. The huge success of the appeal inspired women from all walks of life to participate and this extended across the globe. ‘Pearls before Poppies’ is a fascinating book by Rachel Trethewey about the Appeal and is well worth reading. Perhaps the book could accompany your pearl anniversary gift.
Gold G old – 5 50th 0th A Anniversary nniversary The first evidence of gold dates back to ancient Egypt. It was prized by pharaohs and even the capstones of the Giza Pyramids were made from solid gold. California in 1849 was known for the famed gold rush, so when you next buy an item of gold jewellery give a thought to the history. Gold comes in several carats,
TO ADVERTISE CALL
24 being the purest, folllowed by 18 carat at 75% pure and 14 carat at 58.5% pure. The price of gold changes according to the carat purity. Gold bars are seen as an investment in the uncertain currency markets, however I doubt if many of us are buying gold bars as an anniversary gift! Instead, perhaps a gold chain, cufflinks or earrings would put a smile on your loved one’s face.
Diamond – 6 Diamond 60th 0th Anniversary A nniversary Diamonds are not called a girl’s best friend for nothing! They are a magnificent, hardy stone and come in so many brilliant settings; certainly there is one out there to suit every style and budget. It is worth bearing in mind the four Cs of diamonds; cut, colour, clarity and carat weight, which are all reflected in the price. If you can afford the real thing then it can often be seen as an investment. For those on a tighter budget, simulated diamonds are now so well made that you’d often need a jeweller to distinguish the fake from the real deal. Many people often now travel with simulated jewellery, which looks wonderful and eliminates the worry of losing an expensive item of jewellery. Whatever anniversary you are celebrating this year, nothing beats the magic of opening that special box and seeing someone smile! PAGE

T The he yyoung oung band band with with big big ambitions ambitions Some bands get together just to have fun playing music with friends, with no real ambitions of ever taking it further than a hobby. For local band Marauders however, the aim is to get right to the top. “Our motives for starting the band were to make great music, have fun, and eventually headline Glastonbury festival,” says lead singer and guitarist Ollie Leyfield. Ollie and bandmates Jakob Hamley-Round (drums) and Ben Marshall (bass), met at Katharine Lady Berkeley’s School in Wotton-Under-Edge. Jakob and Ben, both aged 15, live in Wotton, while Ollie, 16, lives a few miles away in Hillesley. He continued: “We formed the band in mid 2017 and immediately began putting together a

set of half covers from our various influences, and songs I had written prior to meeting the boys in the band.” Marauders are still in the early days of their musical journey but have developed a sound well beyond their years, with influences from some of the most iconic names in rock.
FFilm ilm Review Review – Joe Joe K Kennett ennett Green Green Book Book
Based on a true story, pianist Don Shirley embarks on a tour of the Deep South in the 1960s with Tony Vallelonga serving as his driver/ bodyguard. Viggo Mortensen (Vallelonga) and Mahershala Ali (Shirley) both earne d Oscar nominations for this film and play two distinct opposites. Don has no respect for Tony to begin with, and vice versa – they make an agreement that Tony is working for Don, and nothing more. Every stop on the tour presents a different challenge for the duo, and they grow with each stop. Before they depart, Tony is given the Green Book, a guide to where is safe for black travellers to eat, drink and sleep. When Don strays from the book’s defined path, he faces trouble. The acting is superb and the pace is perfect. The film has all the attributes of an awardwinning picture. Full review online.
Ollie said: “Our musical style would probably be described simply as Rock ‘N’ Roll with influences such as The Rolling Stones, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Led Zeppelin and Pearl Jam. “We currently plan on recording an EP and releasing it by the end of the year, but we are yet to decide a moniker for it or what songs are going to go on it,” he added. “But I am positive that it will be good fun.” For now the boys are just enjoying the thrill of playing music with their mates, a sensation that Ollie thinks you can’t beat. “Being on stage is the best feeling in the world and playing in a band makes for a great creative outlet for any frustrations that one may have.” Full story online.
Book B ook Review Review – Aloÿse Aloÿse of of Daylesford Daylesford Book Book Club Club E Educated ducated by Tara Westover Tara Westover’s memoir is a powerful story of a Mormon upbringing in rural Idaho during the 1990s. She realises at an early age that the only way to escape her extraordinary and brutal family is to leave home, get an education and find her own way. Tara, the youngest of seven children, had no birth certificate, no medical records and no schooling. Her father, a religious fanatic who was convinced the world was going to end at the millennium, was controlling in the extreme. She writes with compassion. Her prose is exceptional, the story compelling. There is no blame, just a sadness that in order to achieve her goal she must sever all ties with her family. Tara was saved by the power of books or as she herself puts it in the last line of the book – “an education.” Full review online.

Stroud Stroud Orchestra Orchestra begins begins new new season season The Stroud Symphony Orchestra (SSO) has been one of the area’s most popular music groups for nearly 40 years. With a repertoire ranging from classical composers to ballet and film scores, the orchestra performs three concerts a year, often with guest soloists and sometimes including specially commissioned works. “My wife and I joined the orchestra in 1995 when we moved to Stroud,” explained Andrew Pemberton, who plays French horn. “So we’ve been playing in SSO for over 20 years now.” The orchestra is self-sustaining, financially speaking, thanks to member subscriptions and ticket sales, so use their concerts to raise funds for good causes. “It’s traditional for us to hold a retiring collection for charity at our concerts,” said Andrew.

“During the interval a representative from the chosen charity will briefly have the floor to explain what their cause is all about, then following the show the audience has the chance to donate. “Over the years we’ve raised thousands of pounds for various charities, both locally and further afield.” The SSO begins their 2019 season on Saturday 30th March
at Holy Trinity Church in Stroud. “We’ll be playing pieces by English composers,” continued Andrew, “including Elgar, whose piece ‘Nimrod’ is quintessentially English music. “We’ll also be doing ‘The Wasps’ Overture by Vaughan Williams, Butterworth’s ‘The Banks of Green Willow’ and Frederick Delius’ piano concerto.” Full story online.
Sounds S ounds ffor or a Small Small Space Space returns returns Sounds for a Small Space (SfaSS) is a series of monthly events, with musicians from all over the country coming to Stroud to perform. Founder Alex Caminada, a photographer and videographer by trade, explains how the event came to be. He said: “I had been looking for places to perform and found that it was difficult to find suitable venues. “I approached the Museum in the Park and found that they were keen to provide the Garden Pavilion.” Alex, who was born in the Netherlands but has now lived in the UK for over 40 years, is a keen musician and is especially interested in electronic music, a

genre that often appears at Sounds for a Small Space. He continued: “The name (Sounds for a Small Space) stems from the genre of music – ambient, electronic, electroacoustic and experimental
music often benefits from an intimate or small space.” The Museum in the Park in Stratford Park is home to a range of different exhibitions throughout the year, and Alex says the Garden Pavilion creates a special atmosphere for live music. He said: “The simply shaped long building has sliding glass walls which open up to the garden in the summer, creating a wonderful connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces. “The unique space attracts artists from far and wide, all keen to experience the venue. Their response is inevitably one of delight and they’re pleased that the audience is so much part of the performance.” Full story online.

Celebrating C elebrating aatt h home ome In our celebratory issue it’s an opportunity to think about planning special get togethers with family and friends. There’s nothing nicer than entertaining in your own home, and while it can sometimes feel overwhelming, it doesn’t have to be if you plan ahead and keep it simple. Follow my tips to take the stress out of entertaining and be sure that everyone has a good time – including you!
Aw warm arm welcome welcome Make sure your guests feel relaxed as soon as they arrive. Light up the path to your door with solar lights and create a welcoming atmosphere in your hallway with tealights and candles. Add that extra decorative touch with fresh flowers – a seasonal flower arrangement will help set the scene. A welcome drink never fails to get everyone in the party mood, so why not create a special welcome cocktail or have a tray of glasses of fizz at the ready? I borrowed a huge silver punchbowl for a housewarming party
once, filled it with homemade punch, and it really got the party going.

I’ve always thought drinks trolleys are so cool and stylish – and they are currently on trend. I love the idea of creating your own party drinks station as a focal point where guests will want to gather, and a drinks trolley would be perfect for this. Just assemble some colourful bottles and drinks paraphernalia and hey presto – you have your own relaxed cocktail bar!
Your house needn’t look like it does on a daily basis – create a special party atmosphere. Light the fire, clear clutter, light candles, and review your seating arrangements. Now’s the time to replace your tired sofa or invest in that cool new chair you saw, but remember your guests don’t all have to be seated, they just need to be able to move around easily. And always be sure to have plenty of side tables available for drinks.
A table table dressed dressed for for guests guests Keep things simple and stress free for your food prep; I always find buffets work best. Presentation is everything so channel your inner stylist by using interesting, different sized serving bowls and pretty platters. A tablecloth reflecting your chosen theme will anchor the look, and try adding some extra touches like bunches of fresh herbs, flowers or sparkly accessories. Don’t forget to THE LOCAL ANSWER

Create C reate a party party v vibe ibe To create a magical atmosphere, hang lots of fairy lights around the rooms in which the party will be hosted. And for that final touch, take a tip from the Chinese – they certainly know how to celebrate – and hang some colourful paper lanterns. I was in Singapore over Chinese New Year and I loved the vibrant red Chinese lanterns hanging everywhere, it felt so exciting. Now that your house is party ready, dim the lights, put on your special playlist, grab that glass of champagne, and let the fun begin! PAGE

As The Local Answer celebrates its tenth anniversary, in addition to passing them our congratulations, Money Matters wonders how many of its contributors and advisers have been with them throughout those ten years. We suspect it’s quite a few. We remember Dave Kingscott asking us for an article for one of its very early editions. Naturally, Money Matters obliged, little knowing that this innocent first request would lead to a monthly contribution. Here we are happily working together ten years on. Last year my firm celebrated twenty years in business. Whilst it was a fairly low-key celebration, we reflected on the loyalty shown to us by the many businesses and people who had been with us for these two decades.
A ttwo-way wo-way ccommitment ommitment b between etween employer e mployer a and nd employee employee It isn’t just customers/clients that show loyalty to anyone providing the top class service that we all strive to provide, it’s also the staff, where two-way commitment between employer and employee adds greatly to the working experience. Loyalty shouldn’t be misplaced or misinterpreted, leading to complacency, of course. I’m sure that most businesses are only too well aware of the need to encourage and reward their staff. A happy team is a loyal one! It’s only when I get on to the role of recruitment agencies that I wonder whether everyone believes this theory, but that’s another story… Enough of that, let’s finish on a positive note. Congratulations to The Local Answer and best of luck for the next ten years.

Good G ood ttimes imes a are re rreturning eturning ffor or P Painswick ainswick Painswick captain Craig Mayo has been with the club for 19 years and as with anyone who has spent that amount of time with one club, he has known some peaks and troughs. Happily, Painswick are on an upturn and have been among the leading clubs in Gloucestershire Two North this season. Mayo, a fly-half who can also play full-back, joined the club as a 17-year-old and has been a loyal servant ever since. He is in his fourth season as skipper and as positions on the field go – he describes himself as “more of a kicking fly-half” – the number 10 position is a pretty good place to lead the side. Not that the 6ft Mayo has always been a fly-half because when he was growing up he played at no.8. That was at Marling School
Festival F estival cchallenge hallenge Ask anyone to name two or three National Hunt trainers in Gloucestershire and the chances are that they’ll come back with Jonjo O’Neill, Nigel TwistonDavies or Slad’s Tom George. But while they have been very successful over the years, they are by no means the only bighitters in the world of racing in the county. There are other trainers who are making names for themselves, including Ben Pauling who is based near Bourton-onthe-Water in the heart of the Cotswolds. Pauling moved to this part of the world in 2013 and has been making very good progress. He’s been clocking up the winners consistently and with the Cheltenham Festival just round the corner he’s certainly looking for more. “We’ll be taking a select team

and during his time at Stroud Rugby Club when he played for the juniors and the Colts. So why did he switch from the pack to the backs? “I stopped growing and everyone else carried on,” he laughed. “At school I was fairly big but when I got to 17 or 18 I wasn’t anymore.” He was a good no.8 too, good of four or five horses to the Festival,” he told The Local Answer. “Every horse that we take will have a chance of getting a place.”
A ffootball ootball lleader eader It has become more and more apparent over the past 20 years or so that you don’t need to have been a good footballer to be a good manRoger Burden ager. Think Fergie, Mourinho, Klopp, Wenger – top managers all of them but by no stretch of the imagination could any of them be considered top players. The same applies on the administrative side. Certainly that’s the case with Roger Burden, the man who has done so much for football for 50-plus years in Gloucestershire and nationally as well.
enough to play for the county at age group level, but says he’s very happy he made the switch to fly-half! He’s also happy not to have the place-kicking duties this season – inside centre Tom Powell is a specialist place-kicker and Mayo said: “That lessens the pressure a bit.” And Mayo says that there is no pressure on Painswick to win promotion this season, even though they were playing in Gloucestershire Premier not so long ago. “We’ve not got huge aspirations to climb the leagues,” he said. “If we stay in this division for a couple of seasons that’s not a drama, we’re not looking to dominate Gloucestershire rugby. Our aim is to be a stable community club which can field two sides every week.” Full story online. Now 72, Burden is still chairman of the Gloucestershire Football Association and is a former vicechairman of the Football Association as well as serving as acting chairman of the FA for nine months from May 2010. “I was never the best player,” admitted Burden, but that never stopped him becoming one of the leading figures off the field in England’s national game.

Stonehouse Wheelers are a cycling club who were formed in 1948. They are not competitive but that doesn’t stop them getting out and about a couple of times a week and having fun. Carol Kambites, who has been their chairman for the past 10plus years, said: “We’re a nice, friendly club, we’re not out for speed.” For full versions of all these stoories viisit www.thelocalanswer.co.uk

GB G B sstar tar Z Zoe oe D Davison avison aiming aiming high high Fast rising Great Britain modern pentathlon star Zoe Davison was in Hungary when she spoke to The Local Answer. She was preparing for the Budapest Indoor Competition – part of a 12-strong senior GB team that included recently crowned men’s world champion and one-time Balcarras School pupil Jamie Cooke. Budapest is just one of many places visited over the past year or so by Zoe, who is still young enough to qualify as a junior. The recently turned 20-yearold’s sporting prowess in the multi-discipline event has taken her pretty much all over the globe – Cairo, Prague, Rome, Barcelona and Mexico City to name just a few – so much so that once her career as an elite athlete is over she could easily set up her own holiday travel business! Not that Zoe is thinking that far ahead, of course, far from it. Born in Stroud, the one-time Beaudesert School and Wycliffe College pupil first became interested in multi-discipline sport when she started doing tetrathlon, a team competition organised for its members by the Pony Club. That obviously involved riding and she was a good rider from a young age. She considers that still to be her strongest suit and of the other four disciplines that make up modern pentathlon – swimming, running, shooting and fencing – she says the swimming is her next best event. She was good at all sport of course – “I played all the team sports at school,” she said – but it was always the multidisciplined events that really grabbed her. And it’s easy to see why because she made her international debut at the age of just 15 in a Great Britain youth international. That was just the start. Two years later she was an individual bronze medal winner and a team gold medal winner in a Great Britain youth international, and

last year – her first as a junior – she hit new heights. And some roll of honour it is too because she was selected for her first ever World Cup in Cairo in March, won silver medals at the Milan Kadlec Junior Memorial in Prague in April and at the British Junior Modern Pentathlon Championships in June, and became the Junior European women’s relay champion alongside Charlie Follett. She also claimed a 16th place individual finish at the Junior European Championships in Barcelona in June before finishing fourth at the Junior World Championships in the Czech Republic in August and gaining selection for the World Championships in Mexico in September. Not surprisingly, Zoe, who is now based at Pentathlon GB’s national training centre at the University of Bath, is loving life. “It’s been my dream to be a full-time athlete since I was a lot younger,” she said. “I’m very happy, I love it. The last two years, especially the last year, have been phenomenal.” The standout performance was that fourth-placed finish at the Junior World Championships,
although she admitted that when she crossed the line she had no idea she was in the top four. “I was so in the zone,” she said. “I was completely unaware that I was fourth.” It meant she just missed out on a place on the podium and despite her outstanding performance, she admits: “I am rather gutted that I missed out on a medal by five seconds.” But fourth place is certainly a pretty impressive achievement and the Pentathlon GB powersthat-be certainly thought so because a month later Zoe was competing in the senior world championships in Mexico against all the biggest names in the sport. “That was an incredible experience,” she said. She finished about 40th, which is no mean feat in itself, so what are her aims for 2019? “It’s going to be a hectic season because I’m hoping to perform not only in the juniors but also the seniors,” she said. “My aim is to finish in the top three in the junior worlds and junior Europeans, and to be selected for the senior worlds and senior Europeans.” Full story online.
