IIngredients: ngredients: For the pastry: 60g diced soft unsalted butter; 60g golden caster sugar; 1 medium egg yolk; 125g plain flour; 15g ground almonds; a drop of milk. For the apple filling: 3 eating apples; 75g diced soft unsalted butter; 115g golden caster sugar; 3 medium eggs; 180g ground almonds; ¾ tsp baking powder; 30g flaked almonds. Icing sugar for dusting on top after baking M ethod: Method: 1 To make the pastry: In a food processor cream together the butter and caster sugar, add the egg yolk, then the sifted flour, almonds and a drop of milk to bring the dough together. 2 Wrap in greaseproof paper and chill for two hours. 3 Pre-heat the oven to 170°C fan (190°C/gas mark 5). 4 Knead the dough, then roll it out on a lightly floured surface to fit a 23cm x 3cm deep loose bottom tart tin. 5 Line the pastry with greaseproof paper and fill with baking beans. Bake for 15-20 minutes, remove the paper and beans, then continue to bake for five more minutes.

6 Whilst the pastry is cooking, make your filling. Peel, quarter and core the apples, then slice thinly lengthways. 7 In a food processor, cream together the butter and caster sugar, then gradually add the eggs one at a time, followed by the ground almonds and baking powder. 8 Put the mixture into a large bowl then stir in half the apple slices. Spread over the base of the pastry case, arrange the rest of the apple slices on top and scatter over the flaked almonds. 9 Put in the oven for 35-40 minutes, but keep an eye on it and cover with a bit of foil if it is getting too brown. Leave to cool. 10 10 Dust with icing sugar and serve with a dollop of thick cream or ice cream.

La La Rochelle: Rochelle: c’est c’est formidable! formidable! From somewhere, French chanteuse Sylvie Vartan sings ‘Novembre à La Rochelle’ as you pull into the Parking Vieux Port Ouest after driving south. Moments later, as the sun falls towards the Bay of Biscay, you’re strolling the old port beneath La Tour St Nicholas and Tour de la Chaîne, and admiring the striking murals on harbour-side buildings to the accompaniment of chattering rigging and dancing waterlights on snow-white yacht hulls.

We loved this relaxed seaside community with its easy access to central La Rochelle, proximity to the sleepy waterways of Parc Naturel Régional du Marais Poitevin, and stunning sunsets. It also has convenient access to the swooping bridge leading to Île de Ré’s extensive beaches, Phare des Baleines lighthouse, salt marshes and sleepy fishing villages – make sure to visit La Flotte.

La Rochelle’s location between Esnandes’s mussel nets and the oyster beds of Le bassin de Marennes means seafood reigns supreme. That said, all tastes should be delighted with restaurants such as Le Gaburon, Prao and A 2 Pas Du Marché covering every culinary base. Why Why you you shouldn’t shouldn’t llet et your gum! your dog dog chew chew g um! Feeding your dog chewing gum may not be a regular indulgence, but every year dogs are poisoned by inadvertently ingesting a sweetener called xylitol that is in many ‘sugarfree’ products. One of the most common sources of accidental poisoning is chewing gum, but xylitol is also found in ‘sugar-free’ sweets, mints and even some brands of peanut butter. Recently, Starburst launched a new range of gums containing a high concentration of the sweetener.

D Dogs ogs ccan an g go o iinto nto a h hypoglycaemic ypoglycaemic ((low low ssugar) ugar) ccrisis risis When xylitol is ingested, the dog’s body thinks it is getting a ‘sugar hit’ and starts producing the hormone insulin to process the sugar. However, as insulin only works on actual glucose, the body’s real sugar supplies get rapidly depleted and the dogs can go into a hypoglycaemic (low sugar) crisis. This can result in seizures, vomiting, loss of consciousness and liver failure. Symptoms can occur within hours of ingestion or up to 12 hours in some cases. Treatment usually consists of a glucose drip until the symptoms have passed, although more severe cases may require sedation or anti-seizure medication. Deaths have sadly been known to occur after ingestion of products containing xylitol.

Look L ook o out ut ffor or ‘‘sugar-free’ sugar-free’ versions, versions, w which hich ccould ould ccontain ontain x xylitol ylitol Owners often smuggle tablets or medications into dogs in peanut butter, or mix dog treats with peanut butter and pack them into ‘kongs’ as a way to give a dog a longer lasting treat. The vast majority of peanut butters are safe, but look out for ‘sugar-free’ versions, which could contain xylitol as a sweetener. Most cases of xylitol poisoning are accidental so make sure you keep sweets or chewing gums containing xylitol well out of your dog’s reach. Page 8

Lifestyle Lifestyle vvs sF Fads ads While Gloucestershire is a fairly fit county, it’s been great to see more bodies head outdoors to run, walk, hike, swim, cycle and more in the beautiful weather we’ve had this summer. Obviously keeping hydrated, sun protected and moist urised in this weather is important, but so is getting out and soaking up all that sunlight and vitamin D! Having worked in the fitness industry as a Personal Trainer, managed a gym and trained PTs, I am saddened by the growing ‘short-term’ (i.e. 6-12 week) body transformation trend that is the current fitness fad. Don’t get me wrong, when the program and process is adhered to and the relationship with the trainer is empowering rather than prescriptive, the results can be nothing short of astounding. What we don’t see however, is where those same people end up six months or a year down the line. Too often, a large number of these people, end up back where they started or worse.

Make M ake ssure ure w whatever hatever y you ou d do o iiss ssustainable ustainable Health and fitness is a lifestyle, not a quick fix. Of course, sometimes you need to go all out to shift some weight, pack on muscle, get beach ready, slim down for your school reunion or fit into a dress for a special occasion. Just make sure that whatever you do is sustainable and can be consistently repeated for the rest of your life. Unfortunately, many of the ‘diets’ on these programs are not sustainable in the long term either. When I ran my first ‘transThe Local Answer

formation program’, my aim as a young trainer was to build a sustainable client base, rather than making short-term money. Everyone’s fitness journey will differ based on their unique situation and individual makeup, so there’s not a ‘one size fits all’ answer. There may be a period of ‘trial and error’, but this is important to find what’s right for you.

P Practices ractices a applied pplied cconsistently onsistently o over ver ttime ime The secret sauce to a positive health and fitness lifestyle lies in a strong foundation based on sustainable practices applied consistently over time. I would highly recommend the following health and fitness ‘laws’ throughout one’s lifespan: 1. Nutrition: Nutrition: a balanced diet 1. consisting of appropriate food groups for your bio-energetic needs. 2. 2. Exercise: Exercise: regular exercise is key. Aim to train at as high an intensity as possible at least 23 times a week. This will help with fat loss, cardio-respiratory health and building lean muscle.

3. 3. Hydration: Hydration: replacing both fluid (water) and electrolytes is critical to optimal neuromuscular functioning. Our bodies consist of approximately 80% water, so it’s crucial to keep topping up. 4. Vitamin Vitamin D: D: spending time in 4. the sunshine and the great outdoors is hugely important to both physical and mental health 5. 5. Balance: Balance: everything in moderation! It’s ok to skip a workout every now and then, or have a drink at the weekend. Just make sure you keep a healthy balance. 6. 6. Rest/recovery: Rest/recovery: getting this right will enable you to sustain an exercise regimen for your entire lifespan. 7. 7. Sleep: Sleep: this is also important to help your body recover and let you replenish your energy for the next day’s activities. Aim for 7-9 hours every night. 8. 8. Variety: Variety: get as much variety into your training and exercise as possible to facilitate continuous adaptation by keeping your body stimulated and challenged.

S September eptember sskin kin ssense ense September is a good month to review our skin. Summer has faded and often left our skin feeling dry and dehydrated. It is the month where perhaps we should consider adding serums into our routine to give the skin an extra boost without overloading it.

Serums S erums Skin care ranges offer so many serums, which we often hesitate to use, thinking they might be heavy or clog our pores, but this is not the case. Serums can be very beneficial as a good skin hydrator before we apply our moisturisers. As always with our skin it is trial and error until we find one that suits our particular skin type. Clarins boast that they have the No.1 anti-ageing serum in the UK. It is a double serum, which is their most complete age-control concentrate. It comes with two formulas which you mix together and apply to cleansed skin. Elizabeth Arden is a good, reliable brand which includes the Prevage range. They have won over 220 beauty awards so you can be assured that if you invest in this range, it may be a bit more costly, but you will get what you pay for. The anti-ageing intensive repair daily serum also does exactly what it says on the tin, which is good to know. Elizabeth Arden also has a City Smart Broad Spectrum SPF50 hydrating shield, which protects against the sun, pollution and future signs of ageing. It is formulated with a powerful antioxidant blend, The Local Answer

which helps to maintain optimum skin health, and is an unusual product in that you apply to the face and neck as the last stop in your skincare regimen. If you’re like me, you might like to try out a product for a month or so, then know if you see and feel the difference to your skin. Often I apply to just one side of my face so I really know when I see a change.

Hyaluronic H yaluronic a acid cid Whenever we see the word acid we think it must be very strong and therefore harsh on the skin. This is far from true; in fact it is very light, waterbased and highly effective on all skin types. I use a hyaluronic acid from a skin care range called The Ordinary, which is reasonably priced. great quality products but without huge price tags. A few drops morning and night makes a big difference to the skin, then add your creams or serums afterwards.

Use U se by by dates dates Now that skin care is becoming more and more ‘high tech’ with their ingredients, it is important that you check the item’s shelf life. If you look at the product you will generally now see a small box with an open lid, indicating how long the product is good for once opened. Shelf life can be anywhere from six months up, with some products being suitable for use up to 24 months after opening. I try to make a note of the date I open my products, as I don’t want to lose their full benefit, which might happen when past the expiry date. Page 1

W What hat aare re ttantrums antrums aallll aabout? bout? I recently had a strange experience that I just had to share with you, which gave me an incredible insight into the workings of a three year old’s tantrum. This stuff is gold dust! Believe me, it feels like a super power – I actually understand the mind of a three year old in the middle of a meltdown! This experience happened recently at the Fantasy Forest Festival, which I attended with a fairy-loving friend. We arrived in ‘light costume’ and e n j o y e d p e r u s in g t h e s t a l l s i n the first area, ooh-ing and ahing at the wonderful creativity, artistry, designs, magical creations and wonderful costumes of the other attendees. We sat by the lake admiring the mermaids, met a couple who had just got married there and drooled over expensive things we could not afford – like you do! Then we enquired as to the whereabouts of the Mead Hall, only to be directed into ‘the next field.’ What? There was more? Indeed there was and upon entering the next field we were greeted with about 30 more stalls, food, drinks an arena with live music and archery.

like I needed a cry, a hug and a nap, in that order. Of course, as an adult I did none of those things, but shared my feelings with my friend, who suffers from Fibromyalgia so understood perfectly. I suddenly realised why little kids simply lose the plot – especially on birthdays, Christmas, holidays and ‘nice days out’ – and we see parents exasperated having done so much to make them happy, only to see tears and tantrums.

At that moment my inner child stood stock still, overwhelmed, and I felt like I wanted to cry. I had already seen so much; loved so many things; appreciated so much beauty and magic that I had no room for more. I literally felt

Small people feel wildly, deeply and powerfully but, unlike adults, cannot articulate those feelings. They release them in tears, hysterics, dropping to the floor or simply passing out dead asleep.

between the old year and the new. It provides the opportunity to reflect on the twelve months that have passed with one eye on what might lie ahead. Whilst crime throughout the UK is rising, the increase in Gloucestershire has been much less than other comparable areas. This means that despite the impression you might have got from some news outlets, Gloucestershire is still one of the safest places in which to live. As the range and complexity of crimes continues to grow, the answer is further complicated by the additional social issues around mental health and lack of youth provision. With much of the Constabulary’s time now spent as first responders to the mental health crisis that is gripping our country, what you might call ‘conventional’ police work is being squeezed. And whilst the

primary task of all Police and Crime Commissioners, as laid down by the former Home Secretary who defined the role, is to reduce crime, what is apparent is that the role of the Constabulary is now more than just that. As a summary of the twelve months from April 2018-March 2019, this year’s annual report highlights the challenge of

dealing with a growing range and complexity of crimes, complicated by additional social issues around mental health and lack of youth provision. It reflects on key announcements regarding collaboration with bordering forces and Gloucestershire’s Fire and Rescue Service, budget details, award winning services and the continuing success of the Commissioner’s Fund. As Police and Crime Commissioner, I am required to produce an annual report reflecting how I have carried out my responsibilities over the past 12 months and progress in delivering the Police and Crime Plan. Since Accessibility and Accountability is one of my priorities, I am keen the report is circulated as widely as possible.

Tree T ree hole hole hideout hideout As vicious storms strike through our countryside, they often leave a fair bit of destruction. Branches can be ripped from trees at the trunk, leaving a hole from where its leaves once sprung. Holes can also form from fungal attacks and nooks made by the natural growing process. Devastating as it may sometimes seem, this can be quite useful for wildlife. It is, in fact, these tree holes and fallen branches that can create a new sheltered home for many different species. Over many decades the tree holes will often increase in size, offering more space for larger species to call home. This is because the trees often continue to grow and change; therefore, the hole changes and adapts with it. Woodboring insects also play a part by nibbling away at the tree’s new wound, resulting in a size increase.

A Ancient ncient w woodlands oodlands Tree holes can be found in most large trees, especially

those of 50 years and older. Huge beech and oak trees found in ancient woodlands often have the most impressive tree holes, serving up snuggly homes for their wildlife.

Tenants T enants of of the the hollows hollows In the early days, smaller inhabitants tend to use tree holes. These can be woodlice, spiders, beetles and centipedes. Water gathers in some holes, which attracts insects that lay aquatic larvae. Bee and hornet nests are also found in these hollows, which can help them set up a good defence against potential predators. One of the places dormice love to nest in the summer is in tree hollows. They are often small enough to be one of the first inhabitants after a branch has broken off. They later move down to ground level during the autumn to hibernate. To advertise call 01242 510500

Decades llater ater Decades As the years go by, bigger species move into the tree hole, although often with high competition to claim it. Birds are usually the next tenants looking for a safe place to lay their eggs. Woodpeckers, however, have the skill to chisel their own homes from scratch. Although it takes considerable effort, they can guarantee a safe nest every year for themselves in dead or dying trees. Bats also love to take refuge in tree hollows during harsh weather, as they provide a warm place to hibernate. Decades later the holes are finally big enough for a family of kestrels or owls to nest. It can be a lovely idea to grab a pair of binoculars and set up somewhere to keep a close watch on several tree holes to see who their current occupiers are. Year by year, you may get to see how the tenants and the formation of the tree hole change. Just remember to keep your distance so as not to disturb those living there. Page 1ď™Œ

S Student tudent finances finances If you have just started university or college, you may be worried about student finances. It can seem a minefield of monies but reading around the subject can help you gain a better understanding of what you’re eligible for and how to apply. Firstly there are loans – these have to be paid back once you’ve finished your course and you start earning a certain amount of money. Loans are dependent on personal circumstances such as age and nationality, the university you’re going to, and the course you will study.

Check Check tthe he ccriteria riteria tto o see see iiff y you ou a are re e eligible ligible Another way to get funding for your studies is to apply for a grant. Grants do not need to be repaid, but they are only available for students with particular circumstances, so check the criteria to see if you are eligible. There is also additional financial assistance available if you’re on a low income; for students with disabilities or dependents; if you intend to study medicine, teaching, or social work; and if you go abroad to study. There are different criteria and amounts offered for fulltime and part-time students, and for undergraduates and post-graduates – for full details, search on the internet for student finance England or look on the UCAS website. Funding helps to pay for two main areas: tuition fees and living costs. The amount that tuition fees cost is dependent on what course you take and where you study. To help with living costs, you may be able to apply for a maintenance loan, which is assessed based on household income – either your income or your parents’ if you currently live at home. Living costs include rent and bills, food, transport, books and other materials, and of course, socials! Even though being a student is partly about having a fun, wild time, don’t spend all your money on alcohol and partying! It is important to keep up your payments of rent and bills, otherwise you

If you feel you are struggling with your expenditure or getting into debt, don’t suffer in silence, as this can have negative effects on your studies and overall wellbeing. Don’t ignore problems either; be open about it. For advice, speak to someone in your university’s support services such as a student advisor, or talk to family or friends who can offer support. Learn to budget so that you can cut back on unnecessary spending and focus on the important factors. Above all, being a student is not all about issues with money. Make the most of your time at college or university and enjoy student life! Page 21

Tuesday 10th September is suicide prevention day and something I feel very strongly about. People often still associate suicide as a selfish act that someone decides to do without thinking of the impact it will have on other people. Even the wording ‘committed suicide’ implies it is a sin or crime.

Their brain is not processing life correctly or functioning rationally. Taking your own life goes against every natural survival instinct we have, so is not something easily done. It is also important to know that most people who feel suicidal do not actually want to die – they do not want to live the life they have anymore. A healthy, stable brain will process the ups and downs of life rationally and understand that although there can be extremely tough times – financially, physically or emotionally – these are just temporary phases and things will change and improve.

The pair were appointed at the end of last season, a season that saw the Pats drop out of South West Premier after winning promotion in 2017/18. It was a tough campaign for the club but Cape is confident that in Downes and Smith, the club have chosen two men who can help the club enjoy a successful season back in South West One East. Cape says that the club have not set promotion as a target, although they clearly want to be competing near the top end of the table. “Chris and Ben are a really good balance,” said Cape. “Chris as the head coach has an intrinsic understanding of what it means to be an Old Pat. The Rugby World Cup is special, very special, but if this year’s extravaganza in Japan has a downside it’s meant that the start of this season’s Premiership campaign has had to be delayed. Gloucester rugby fans have to wait until the penultimate weekend of October for the opening round of Premiership fixtures. Before that it will be the Premiership Rugby Cup that takes centre stage in September. But after Gloucester’s exploits in the Premiership last season when they finished third, the wait will surely be worthwhile and one person who certainly hopes so is Peter Ford, one of the club’s favourite sons. Dom Dom James James targets targets glory glor y iin n tthis his year’s Cheltenham Cheltenham Half Half Marathon Marathon year’s D o m J a me s is h op i ng t o go one better than he managed last time out when he competes in this year’s Cheltenham Half Marathon. And if he does – this year’s race is on Sunday 29th September – that would be some achievement for the 23-year-old because he finished second in the 2018 running of the race behind his Cheltenham Harriers team-mate Ben Price. And what made James’ performance all the more impressive close on a year ago was that he had only been running seriously for a handful of months. “I always preferred playing football,” admitted James, a youth support worker who lives in Cheltenham. “I played quite a lot at Coventry University, I liked the social side. “I was a ‘leftie’ so they put me on the left wing because I was quite fast, I’m quite a good sprinter. It was quite a good standard, I played mainly in the 2nd team but I also played a few games in the 1st team. “I used to run in straight lines but the more I played the more I realised I wasn’t built for it, it was quite physical.” James had done a bit of running when he was a pupil at Sir Thomas Rich’s, a school where he also played football, cricket and rugby. “I did a bit of cross-country at school but only because I was good at it,” he said. “It wasn’t something I was really keen to do, I always thought running was a bit of a loner sport!” That’s all the more surprising when you consider that his dad Chris was a keen runner. Chris was also a keen cyclist and swimmer and although he wasn’t a member of any clubs, James junior says his dad is “naturally gifted”. It’s fair to say that James junior

Dom James

is a natural runner too because when he ran the Cheltenham Half a couple of years ago he completed in a time of one hour, 19 minutes. That’s pretty decent in anyone’s book, especially when you consider that James had done little or no training. And it was enough to convince him that he should start to take the sport a little bit more seriously, so in January of last year he joined Cheltenham Harriers and it is one of the best decisions he has ever made. “Cheltenham Harriers are a great group,” he said. “Every Tuesday whatever the weather, 25 or 30 turn up to training, everyone is in good spirits. “There’s lots of people to drive you on, it’s quite competitive. There’s a friendly rivalry. Even though they are your mates you still try to smash each other.” James reckons he’s running about 100 kilometres a week every week in training and while that is clearly hard work, the rewards are obvious because he is making rapid progress in the sport. He ran his first race as a Harrier in June last year, recording a time of 33 minutes, 56 seconds in the Chepstow 10K.

“I went off too quick,” he said, “I blew up, it was a learning curve. Racing is all about learning. You need to know your body, how you feel at certain distances and what’s the best speed to go off at.” James’ rapidly improving times suggest that he is a fast learner. He has run a number of 5Ks, 10Ks and half marathons and has a best in the half marathon of one hour, eight minutes, which he clocked at Reading earlier this year. That was two minutes quicker than he went round Cheltenham last year and a full six minutes quicker than when he won the Warwick Half, also last year. He enjoyed winning at Warwick, of course he did, and he’d love nothing more than to be first across the line at this year’s Cheltenham Half. “Last year was great, although I was obviously disappointed to come second, even though Ben is a tough guy and an amazing athlete,” said James. “Then there’s Alex Lee and Phil Beastall, they both run for the Harriers and are top athletes too. “But I’ve told myself I want to win it this year. That’s one of my priorities.” He also believes he can run a lot faster. “We are very lucky at Cheltenham Harriers to have Andy Prophett as our team manager and Dave Newport as one of our coaches,” James continued. “As long as I’m coached by Dave I reckon I can run 64/65 minutes. “That may be optimistic, but with training it’s all about consistency. I think I’ve got the potential to go a lot faster.” The Cheltenham Half starts at 9am and is hosted by Cheltenham Racecourse.

Charlton Kings Parish Council is teaming up with Gloucestershire Constabulary Neighbourhood Watch on Saturday 21st September to hold a second bicycle coding event of the year within the parish. The first event was held in June of this year and attracted 163 bicycle owners, the largest number of attendees at any of the four events held across the town over the last 12 months. The coding is free for local parishioners and takes only a matter of minutes. Cycle frames are etched with their own unique number via a stencil with a chemical compound and then registered on the National Cycle database. Any bicycle found after a theft can therefore be positively identified anywhere in the country and returned to its owner. The coding events are also an opportunity for parishioners to have a conversation on crime prevention with Neighbourhood Watch staff. Advice and guidance on setting up further Neighbourhood Watch schemes within Charlton Kings may also be sought on the day. Charlton Kings has over 27 schemes currently in operation and the parish council is keen to see further schemes established. The costs of running bicycle coding events are currently met by the Gloucestershire Constabulary, using staff from the crime reduction department and volunteers from local Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinators. For further details of this event, please go to www.charltonkingsparishcouncil.gov.uk

Festival Festival set set to to paint paint the the town town The Cheltenham Paint Festival is quickly becoming one of the more popular annual events in the town. Now entering its third year, the festival was co-founded by Andy ‘Dice’ Davies and Angela Parks, with last year’s weekend attracting 120 artists to paint the town. “It amazes me how well Cheltenham has taken to it,” said Andy, also known by his artist name, Dice Sixtyseven. “I always remember when we first did it two years ago, we were painting a wall on Tewkesbury Road and one of the residents came out and complained they didn’t want a black wall outside their house. “We explained we were putting a mural over it, and then when it was done she started taking pictures and said she was going to the council.

Brazilian artist L7Matrix created this piece on Cleveland Street last year

“But only because she wanted CCTV installed so no one could damage it!” This year will feature a similar number of artists to 2018 – “it’s about as much as my head can handle,” says Andy – with the public able to watch them at

work as they create spectacular street art. The artists will be painting at around 25 locations in Cheltenham, in places like The Brewery Quarter and The Wilson. This year the Paint Festival is partnering with the Cheltenham Literature Festival, in celebration of their 70th anniversary. The world’s first literature festival was held in Cheltenham in 1949, and featured an event called ‘Hurrah for Books’, which will be the name of the theme of this year’s Paint Festival. “Quite a few artists have taken to the theme,” said Andy. “There’ll be lots of literature inspired art around.” The Cheltenham Paint Festival runs from Thursday 5th to Sunday 8th September. The The Lion Lion K King ing

Putney P utney by Sofka Zinovieff

We all know the story. Now it’s time to relive the classic. Jon Favreau’s reimagining of Disney’s ‘The Lion King’ is up there as one of the best of the recent series of live action remakes we’ve seen hit the big A young Simba. screen in recent years. Picture: Walt Disney Studios Staying almost perfectly true to the original, the story of course tells of lion cub Simba’s (Donald Glover) coming-ofage, with the tragic loss of his father Mufasa (James Earl Jones), and his journey to becoming king. If not even for anything else, this film is worth seeing for how visually stunning it is. At times, you forget that the characters are animated, and it’s hard to doubt that there are talking warthogs and meerkats parading through the desert singing Hakuna Matata. Full review online.

Sofka Zinovieff ’s second novel is set in Putney and in Greece. The time frame switches from the present day to the 1970s and is set around the relationship between an up-and-coming composer, Ralph, and a young girl, Daphne. Ralph is a friend of Daphne’s parents who set very few boundaries in the upbringing of their children. Zinovieff excels at shifting the tension; what was acceptable in the 1970s is unacceptable today, but she never lets us forget that Daphne was a child and Ralph a grown up. This novel often leaves a nasty taste in one’s mouth, but it is thought provoking and the descriptions of Greece are delightful. Greece is where Daphne is finally able to come to terms with her past and move on with her life. Full review online.

New New collaboration collaboration for for performers performers Fur will fly in a new creative collaboration between a theatre company and a performance storyteller, when they premiere ‘An Audience with Barbara Catland’ at the Stroud Theatre Festival. The show features Chloë of the Midnight Storytellers as Babs Catland and Laura May Attwood of Brick Door Theatre Company as her cat Tabitha. It’s described by Chloë as, “a comedy fantasy that explodes the whole notion of the shabby, lonely, crazy cat lady”, with topical themes and just a whisker of audience participation. Brick Door Theatre Company (BDTC) like to produce shows with a bit of a twist. The company, founded in 2013 by Cheltenham local Laura, specialise in collaborating with local creatives to make inter-

esting and stimulating shows based on a range of topics. “BDTC believe in providing a platform for local artists to collaborate on,” said Laura. “We have produced shows by local writers like Nieves Lopez (The Visit 2014) and Carol

Sheppard (The Drop of a Pin 2015).” An adopted Gloucestershire local, Chloë has been living in the Cotswolds since 1995 and moved to Cheltenham in 2017. A seasoned performer, Chloë co-founded Midnight Storytellers in 1999, going solo in 2006 after illness forced her onstage partner out of the business. She said: “When it comes to the Catland show, I’m as nervous as a long tailed cat in a rocking chair factory. “You see, for 20 years I’ve told stories live, following a theme not a script. “Devising new material like this show is risky – but it’s what I’ve been wanting to do.” Chloë and Laura will be at the Stroud Theatre Festival every night from Friday 13th to Sunday 15th September. Founded in 1996 by Anne Marabini Young and Bryan Evans, the company has grown over the years into one of the most revered opera companies in the UK. “I was a singer and started the company to do a few concerts,” explained Anne. “Bryan came on board after his job with another opera company ended, and we began to broaden it with singers from all over the country.” Over the years the company has staged over 2,000 productions of classic operas. “We are a chamber opera company and perform in a

“ A n d w e p e rf o r m in b e a ut i f ul period costumes – it’s become a bit of a trademark for us and it makes the productions even more special.” Whilst the company is based in London, and travels to perform all over the world, Anne and husband Bryan recently put down roots here in Cheltenham. “We decided to move to Cheltenham,” said Anne, “as we’d been here quite a few times and just fell in love with it.” Diva Opera will be bringing Madama Butterfly to Cheltenham College on Thursday 24th October. If your mint, lemon balm or chives are looking a bit congested, lift and divide them, replanting only the most vigorous section of roots. This will give them a chance to settle down before winter comes and they can burst into life in spring. You can pot up some bits and keep under a cloche, greenhouse or the kitchen windowsill for use through the winter.

colder. I tend to plant an ongoing selection of winter salad leaves in the plastic containers that mushrooms come in, and keep them near the back door. Now is a good time to use a biological control (nematodes) against vine weevil grubs – you know the little beasts that, as grubs, lie in wait in pots of cyclamen, primulas, begonias and other species, and eat the roots away until the poor plant keels over. The adult weevils make unsightly notches on the leaves of plants like rhododendrons, which will not kill them but look horrid. We eevils are the hard-shelled little insects with what looks li ke a li tt le ‘snout’ on their heads. The biological control is good to use on pot plants but is not so effective in the garden, depending on the soil To advertise call 01242 510500

type. You can buy them from the garden centre or online. From what I remember you have to order in advance or send off for them, as they don’t have a shelf life, and they get posted to you. Follow the instructions on the packet and mix up the microscopic nematode with water and drench the pots. Don’t let the compost dry out.

S Sweetpeas weetpeas d don’t on’t take take u up pm much uch sspace pace Buy sweetpea seeds ready for planting next month. Sweetpeas are such a great thing to grow. They grow up a wigwam of sticks so don’t take up much space, and if you enrich the soil with some compost before planting in their final position they will reward you with flowers all summer long to cut. In fact you must cut them so that they keep flowering and you end up with bunches of the little scented jewels all over the house. Heaven! Page 45

Cosy C osy up up for for autumn autumn Autumn is my favourite time of the year. As summer draws to a close, I look forward to the brighter, cooler days, cosy nights in and all the glorious colours of autumn that I love. With the end of summer and the arrival of a new season, it’s a good time to think about making your home warmer and cosier, or introduce some new colour, ready for the chillier months to come.

C Capture apture tthe he sseason’s eason’s n new ew m mood ood A new season opens up a world of possibilities. Interiors are now like fashion brands and the new A/W collections are already appearing in the shops and online. Now is the time to tune into the new styles and pick out a few key items to update your look.

Be B eb bold old w with ith p pattern attern I have always loved wallpaper and it’s great to see it back in fashion – you only need to look in the window of your nearest

Farrow and Ball shop! Check out Pinterest and Instagram, or look at the Cole and Son website for some amazing ideas. If you don’t want to be too daring, you can always start off with a small room, like a downstairs loo, or stick to one wall in your living room or bedroom. I picked up a couple of rolls of end of line (previously very expensive) teal and gold patterned wallpaper in a sale and used it for a feature wall in my dining space – I get so many compliments!

IIntroduce ntroduce a autumn utumn h hues ues The trend for bolder, stronger and richer colours in interiors is perfect for this time of the year, when we are looking to add warmth and cosiness to our living spaces. Try introducing a richer colour palette with warm earthy colours to add character to a room. Think ochre, chestnut or terracotta. A pop of vibrant berry colour on a lampshade or cushions can really pep up an otherwise neutral colour scheme. The Local Answer

C reate a ccosy osy a mbience Create ambience Get ready to snuggle down and embrace all the new season has to offer. Invest in some chunky knitted throws and cushions, add a rich toned rug, and fill generous log baskets with firewood. Search out jewel toned velvets to use as coverings for chairs, fill vases with sculptural branches and bright red berries, or bowls of golden autumn squashes to make a seasonal table centre.

Add Add ssome ome p personality ersonality The fashion for all things natural is set to continue. What could be cosier than sheepskin as the nights get cooler – and it’s not just for slippers. On a recent trip to the Lake District I saw some beautiful sheepskin footstools in the shape of Herdwick Lakeland sheep. My sister would dearly love one for her lakeside cottage. It’s never too early to think about Christmas presents, and what could be nicer than a special gift for the home! Page 49

It may come as no surprise to you that the most popular products were reusable coffee cups and water bottles, with cutlery and straws everywhere you looked too. The question is, are these wonder products, billed as environmentally friendly, really all that good? There was an enormous variety of different cups and bottles available – patterns, metallic, bright colours, folding – and there certainly seem to be different trends, making the humble reusable product a fashion item, encouraging shops to bring out more and more designs. So why isn’t this a great thing?

The Local Answer

Well it can be, but you have to think about one important thing before you buy – can this be recycled? The issue is that many of these items can’t be, and when the inevitable happens and there is a new, shinier cup that catches your eye, or you forget it one day and instead of having a paper cup, you try to do your bit and grab a new one at the counter of your favourite coffee shop, what happens to your old one?

W What hat d do o you you d do ow with ith tthem hem iiff tthey hey ccan’t an’t be be rrecycled? ecycled? The same applies to water bottles. They are absolutely brilliant in theory, and I myself use one often, but I can’t tell you how many my children have lost or broken at school, and then what do you do with them if they can’t be recycled? Often they are made of materials that aren’t accepted at the plants in the UK and so they end up in landfill and the chances are, they will take even longer to break down than thin plastic, resulting in an issue we are very familiar with. They may not be single To advertise call 01242 510500

use items, but they end up being just as bad for the planet.

D Do oy your our rresearch esearch So what can you do? Well, it’s a brilliant thing to have reusable items, but make sure you do your research first. Is it made of a material that can be recycled? Is part of it ok but the lid isn’t?

C Check heck b before efore y you ou b buy uy I was caught out by an amazing sounding bamboo cup, but it turned out that due to the melamine resin it is in, it can’t be recycled at all. There are some that are completely compostable out there, and some that are able to be fully recycled, so just make sure that you check before you buy and make sure you do actually recycle it after. While it’s better to keep a product for as long as you possibly can to get the most use out of it, it’s ok to be swayed by the latest fashion or to simply get bored, as long as the item you’re bored of doesn’t end up making the problem worse. Taxing T axing tthe he highest highest earners earners There have been statements recently from financial folk at both the major political parties about how to tax Britain’s highest earners – statements that suggest a general election is about to happen, although that’s another story. Unsurprisingly the two parties disagree totally on how to approach the subject, but they do appear strangely to agree on one thing – the definition of who they think should be treated as highest paid. Those people running their own business or in the higher end of middle management might be surprised to find that the battle ground is being struck at an annual income of just £80,000. The Tories want that to be the point at which you start paying 40% tax (currently under £50,000). Labour want to increase the tax rate to 45% for anyone earning above that figure. But is it all worth it either way?

50% 50% o off all all income income tax tax is is paid paid by by tthe he ttop op 5 5% %o off e earners arners Surprisingly it is. The old 80:20 principle applies in a pronounced way to income tax collected by the Treasury. HMRC has published information that says 50% of all income tax is paid by the top 5% of earners, with the top 1% contributing 30% of the income tax collected by the Treasury. These are quite staggering statistics. When I did a brief survey in the office, we were all well wide of this mark. In comparison, the lowest 50% of income earners pay less than 10% of the total annual income tax collected, with many contributing nothing at all. It’s no wonder therefore that the political battle lines are drawn at higher income levels. Taxing the highest earners, which many folk think is simply an issue of social equality, is actually fundamental to determining how much income tax the government collects every year. Reading the HMRC publication about the top 1% contributing 30% of the tax take made me wonder what income level you needed every year to join this apparent elite band of Britain’s highest earners. The answer? £160,000 a year – now there’s something for local entrepreneurs to strive for. Become one of the country’s highest earners and make a big difference to the nation’s tax take!
