Eat well, train haard and play harderr!! So here we are, in the last quarter of 2018. How many of us have ticked off all of our fitness resolutions and health goals for the year? Modern life, with all its challenges and interruptions, can be extremely stressful and our ability to cope with this is largely dependant on our ‘readiness’ – physical, emotional and mental health. Life can often get in the way of our best intentions; one of the hardest things in the world is following through and acting on things that we should/ought/want to do. After all, ‘the road to hell is paved with good intentions’.

Keep it simple and do what makes you happy Your decision to book into fitness classes or invest time in your own training program is positive proof that you want to be successful in your life. life Too often, often we g get et caught up in the detail and complexity of things, so we forget to keep p it simple and just do that which makes m us happy, successful, fulfilled and healthy, rather than what we think will please other people.

Let’s nail itt! During the summer months, especially when our toe nails are on display more often, we tend to take more care in the appearance of our nails. Once the cooler weather kicks in and the boots and gloves appear,r, we very often neglect attention to our nails. Why not treat both your hand and toe nails all year round with loving care – they deserve it.

way to ensure this is to use soap and hot water, then ruub with alcohol. Replace naail files regularly as they easily harbour bacteria, and neveer let a nail technician use a file on you that has previously been used on anotheer customer.

Nails

Don’t soak your nails for lon ng periods of time, as this can weaken n them by saturating them with water. Instead, as you soakk in i that th t wonde derful f l bath, b th spare a thought for your nails and keep them out of the wate er. A good book could help with this! It is such a temptation to pull or tear off any rough or hanging skin, but don’t. Pulling at your nails can lead to ripped tissue an nd, again, bacteria can creep in. Insttead, trim any rough skin neatly with nail scissors or clippers. Nails are not tools but we often use them to do jobs tools are made for and our nails ppayy the pprice.

Always wear gloves when washing the dishes, working in the garden or using i harsh h h cleaning l i products. d t Gloves Gl will help protect your nails and finger tips from wear and tear, and any harsh chemicals you may be exposed to. Gloves can be very inexpensive so there is no excuse not to wear them, and your nails will thank you for it.

Manicures and pedicures

Dos and don’ts

Salons are readily available to give you manicures and pedicures, but it is up to you to check the salon you choose is clean, sterile and fully licensed. Warts can often be picked up in salons, l so a sterile l enviroonment is Cuticles crucial. Tools, whether at a salon or at Oils specifically formulated for the ment. Look home, must be kept clean primarily to cuticles are a good investm avoid bacteria. The simple and easy for those containing vitaminn E, jojoba

oil, rapeseed oil or almond oil. Oils protect the skin around the nails which help to improve grrowth and keep them healthy and lookking good. JJust like our skin,, cuticless can gget parched and need some TLC on a regular basis. Should we cut our cuticles? The simple answer is no. When we cut them, we remove the seal at the base of our nails and again this can leave our nails open to infection. Less is more when it comes to cuticles, so do not cut or trim them and do not allow anyone else to do so. Push them gently back after a bath or shower.

Nutrition Our nails are made of keratin, which is a form of protein. A healthy diet can significantly improve the strength of our nails, so include foods in your diet that are rich in zinc, such as lean meats, seafood, eggs, nuts and seeds. Vitamin C is also essential for collagen found in your skin and fingernails.

Nail polish A well manicured hand is a delight to look at and the varieties of nail polish colours are endless. Even a clear coat gives a cared for appearance to our nails Acetone is often us nails. used ed in nail polish removers, but it is harsh and can dry out the oils, so try to always purchase non-acetone prodducts. No matter how tempting it is, never peel your polish off, as at the same time you are removing a nail layer, which weakens the remaining nail. Life after death d There are around 6,000 6 000 people on the transplant waiting list in the UK and, on average, three people in need of an organ transplant die each day. The current method of registering as an organ donor means that you must contact the NHS organ donor register and give them your details. What is surprising is that over 80% of UK adults say they would definitely consider donating their organs, but only 37% are registered as donors. This is a huge difference but luckily the government have taken notice and have decided to put through a new legislation, which they have indicated could be in place by April 2020. The new system will be much like the one already in place in Wales and is known as ‘deemed consent’ or the ‘opt out system’. This means that everyone will be considered a potential donor, unless they have registered on the NHS Organ Donation website to say that they do not wish to donate their organs. There are three types of organ donation:

2. Donation followin ng Circulatory Death (D DCD) This is when a person has irrreversible loss of function of the heart and lungs after a cardiac arrest, from which the person cannot or shouldd not be resuscitated.

3. Living Donation

Whilst you are still alive you can choose h to donate d through h h a medical di l operation. Kidneys are the t most common living donation, annd in some This person would have hadd a severe cases a small section of your liver or brain injury and permanently lost the lung, discarded bone from m a hip or potential for consciousnesss and the knee replacement, or amniotic membrane (placenta) can bee donated. capacity to breathe.

1. Donation followin ng Brain Death (DBD)

The Local Answer

What can I donate? The organs that can be doonated are kidneys, heart, liver,r, lungs,, pancreas and the small bowel. Tissuees such as skin, tendons, bone, heart valves v and corneas can also be donateed to help rebuild the lives of severeely injured people. Having open and honest discussions d with family members abbout your beliefs and decisions is very important, important as they will always be consulted should donation be possibble. Many people find it difficult to disccuss death and worst case scenarioss, but the more we have these frank discussions d the easier they will becomee. To know that their loss haas resulted in someone else being givenn a chance of life again can bring many people comfort, especially as a sinngle organ donor can save up to eight lives and a single tissue donor can enhance the lives of up to 50 people. Whatever laws are in plaace where you live, and whatever your own decision is about organ donnation, this new legislation will take time to go through, but will hopefullyy result in saving thousands of lives. Regardless of who is le earning, a musical education can be expensive, e so how do you manage e if your budget won’t stretch too private lessons?

Choose an easily accessible instrum ment Firstly, choose an easily accessible and popular instrument. The guitar is a great place to start, as these can be found second hand or quite cheaply these days, and you might even find that you can offer a loving home to a friend’s guitar that has been gathering dust. Alternatively, look for used instruments for sale in your local Sales Listings. Next, raid your local charity shops and used book stores to find tab books to guide you through. Whether it is your child or yourself learning, begin with the basics and swallow your pride – everyone begins with ‘Twinkle Twinkle’, there’s no shame! Now you can dive into YouTube for tutorial videos and learn by watching and practising – which, let’s face it, is what you have been doing since birth, so you’re a natural. Why not get the whole family involved? Who knows, you could be the next big thing?

Mental ‘issues’ or mental ‘strength’ – yoou choose h Many things influence the performance of individuals at work. Some of those influences may be work related, but many can be affected by external factors at home; the pressures of caring for family, bereavement, relationships issues, debt, sickness and much more. Whatever the situation, it is essential that employees are supported pp byy an employer p y that understands, and is prepared to do what it takes to support, their employees’ mental health.

Sick staff cost the UK economy £77.5bn a year Britain’s 2017 Healthiest Workplace Survey took 32,000 individuals across a variety of business sectors and found that sick staff cost the UK economy £77.5 billion a year. Wildlife Ma Mat tter rs s with Ma ax xine R Ra agga at tt

A safe haven for winterr One off the O th mostt important i t t things thi about the changing seasons is to ensure we provide the right conditions for our wildlife to thrive. Just as we do, creatures of all shapes and sizes need food and shelter from the harsh conditions winter can bring, but sometimes nature requires a helping hand. We can prepare our gardens with minimal effort and it will cost next to nothing to provide the necessary resources to ensure the survival of many different species.

Use what nature provides The autumn wind will shake many leaves and sticks down from the nearby trees into your garden; you can brush this all to one corner for insects and hedgehogs to use as shelter. By leaving the stems of dried up flowers, you are giving smaller insects a place to hide inside during winter. You can also harvest the seeds from the middle of the dried flower heads and save them to plant next year to add more beauty to your garden.

Pondlife If you have a pond in your gaarden, the best time to clear it out is when activity is at its lowest – this t being between October and January. However,r, you may still find a range of

Page 24

invertebrates trapped in the vegetation you remove. Thhese could be snails or damselfly nympphs, so it is best to leave this vegetation spread on the floor for a day or twoo to allow time for any remaining pondlife to make their way back to where they came from.

produced to provide food for birds throughout the winter,r, as they t need the energy to control thheir body temperature. Small yellow w flowers that also grow on ivy are precious p to insects, as they are one of o the last sources of nectar available until spring.

Don’t prune the ivy

Putting up a bird box and some food is also hugely beneficial for thhe survival off birds, bi d especially i ll during d i snowy s andd icy conditions. Birds not only o enjoy bird seed, but you can alsso put out unsalted peanuts, cheese, apples a and pears. It’s a great idea to have a bird bath so that clean water is avaailable for them. If you find the water freezes overnight, you can float a ball in the water and remove it in thee morning so the birds can drink througgh the hole in the ice. Preparing your garden can be a great family activity, enncouraging children to do their bit for creatures great and small, as each aand every one matters. So remember,r, as tempting as it is to cleann up your garden for winter,r, try to leave at least the outer borders untouuched for animals to take shelter,r, andd leave ivy and bushes untrimmed for extra protection against the elem ments.

During autumn and winter,r, most m trees l lose their h leaves, l b ivy holds but h ld out through the cold months with its evergreen nature. Ivy is, in fact, more beneficial to wildlife than most people first realise – it is not mereely a place for shelter,r, but also food. Berries B are

Apparently, compliance rates in the human medical world can be well below 50% for ppeople p on long-term g medications. People suffering from conditions such as diabetes, asthma or high blood pressure had particularly poor adherence to treatment recommendations. Traditionally in the veterinary world, we haven’t worried as much as our GP counterparts about whether our clients are following our instructions, and maybe, surprisingly, y, with good reason. It turns out compliance rates are somewhat better when it comes to giving pills to a pet rather than taking them ourselves! Various studies have looked at the reasons why humans neglect to follow the medical advice given to them – these can range from a simple lack of understanding of the need of the medication, unwanted side effects, effects inconvenience issues around health and lifestyle advice, and the cost of some medications. In the veterinary world, the financial cost can be a much bigger issue without the assistance of pet insurance, but all the other issues exist also.

In many cases we are more invested in keeping our pets healthy than ourselves It turns out in many cases we are just more invested in keeping our pets healthy and well than ourselves. The pet-owner bond has a lot to do with this – the seemingly unconditional love that we receive earns a sincere affection, which translates to a considerable emotional investment to nurse a sick companion back to health. However,r, before b f we can pat allll vets andd pet owners on the back for their wonderful adherence, there is still some work to be done. Highest levels of veterinary compliance are seen with short courses of medical treatments. Once you start looking at preventative health care such as vaccinations, parasite treatments and dental prophylaxis, then even our veterinary adherence results starts to fall quickly. It comes down to if you can’t see a problem it’s easier to ignore. Not surprisingly, y, the worst area for compliance is weight loss advice – it’s not so easy to resist the dog that begs constantly for food or the cat that meows incessantly to tell you that it needs another meal! The same reason we want to make the them em better again makes it hard to resist giving them thoose extra treats. As human patients and pet owners we w can do a little better. If we would complete a course e of tablets for a pet, we ought to do the same for ourselves, and the next time Fido begs for a biscuit try a carrot stick instead!

Carl Llewe ellyn targets mo ore big-race su uccess Carl Llewellyn knows all about a the thrill of being involved with h big-race winners winners. The two-times Grand Nationalwinning jockey enjoyed a great riding career and is now proving just as successful as assistant to top National Hunt trainer Nigel TwistonDavies. It’s a position the 53-year-old has held for the past nine years – he was a trainer in his own right for three years in Lambourn before that – and though it is now well over 30 years since he rode his first winner under Rules, he admits he still gets a huge buzz from that winning g feeling. g And that winning feeling is just a little more special around this time of year with The November Meeting at Cheltenham Racecourse very much in everyone’s ’s thoughts. It’s a meeting that holds many fond memories for Llewellyn who steered Tipping Tim to victory in the showpiece race way back in 1992 when it was known as the Mackeson Gold Cup.

Carl Llewellyn, right, is a big Cheltenham fan

He was trained by Twiston-Davies, of course, and while there were great celebrations that day, y, they were no greater than those last year when the Tom m Bellamyridden Splash of Ginge held h off the challenge of Starchitect to win the BetVictor Gold Cup for th he TwistonDavies/Llewellyn team. And while Llewellyn waas obviously a big part of those celeb brations, he was just as pleased for the horse’s ’s owner John Neild.

“He was a first-time e owner, r,” said Llewellyn, “he loves his h racing and loves everything aboutt the yard. yard He He’s ’s a great guy.” Neild and everyon ne connected with the Guiting Powerr stable will be hoping for more successs at this year’s ’s meeting of course. Llewellyn and Twiston-Davies have enjoyed a close workin ng relationship for many, y, many years now with one of Llewellyn’s ’s two Grrand National winning rides – Earth Summit in 1998 – being trained d by TwistonDavies, as were 15 of his h 17 Grade 1 winners. Ag good number of those t Grade 1 winners were at Che eltenham and like everyone else involved in the sport, a meeting at Cheltenham remains special for Llewellyn who is certainly looking forw ward to 16th18th November. “We’ve traditionally done d very well at the November meeting,” he said. “It’s ’s a big occasion and a great atmosphere, the crow wd make a big difference.”

Prestbury’s ’s young guns Geaves tribute to t mum Hockey’s ’s masters Prestbury Rovers Football Club have been around for a good many years – they’re 60 years old – but they’ve got a pretty young management team. So says their chairman Grant Clark, who himself has only just turned 25, and is in his second season in the role. All of the management team still play football, said Clark with some pride. Clark is a defender in the club’s first team – although he let slip when talking to The Local Answer that he’d like to play centre midfield! – and he’s in ggood company p y because the club’s secretary Dan Skears and treasurer Robin Bussey are also first-teamers. First-team manager Carl Blake is also part of the management team and he plays in the club’s flagship team, who play in Division Two of the Cheltenham League, while the reserve team manager Tom Surgenor,r, 24, plays for the club’s Division Three team.

People often say that their mum ‘is is one in a million’, but in Fiona Geaves’ case that was so very true. Geaves is the super talented squash player who has made a living out of the sport by playing G left, and coaching in Fiona Geaves, with mum, Jan all parts of the world for more than 30 years. Now 50, she is certainlyy one of the best p players y ever p produced byy this country and at one stage in the 1990s was ranked number five in the world. That’s some achievement, of course, but Geaves, born and bred in Gloucester and these days a coach at East Glos Club in Cheltenham, says that none of the success she’s enjoyed would have been possible without her mum, Jan Geaves.

Brian B i Stokes St k has h just j t turned t d 69, 69 but b t he’s living proof that ag ge is no barrier to playing sport. Brian is a very keen masters m hockey player, a sport he is very keen to champion in this countyy and beyond. So keen, in fact, is he to publicise all that is good about masters hockey that he got in touch with w The Local Answer so that we co ould help him spread the word. Brian, who still plays for Gloucester City, y, has been playing masters m hockey for the best part of a de ecade – “As far as II’m m concerned it it’ss fo or people who are 60-plus,” he said. These days he plays for f Gloucestershire’s masters team, a team who were good enough to finish runnersup in this year’s nationaal masters cup competition. The tougher the event the better for Ironman for Ironman Michael Michael Eli Eliades ades Michael Eliades would appear to be a man on a mission. Over the past three years or so he has taken part in 24 full full-on on, tough events – certainly none of them are for the faint-hearted – and he wants to do more and more. The 35-year-old recently completed the Ironman 70.3 Weymouth and even though he described it as the toughest challenge he has taken on, he has plans at some stage to do an Ironman Triathlon which consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bicycle ride and a 26.2-mile run. Readers with an eye for figures will spot that that is twice the distance that Eliades covered in Weymouth y and he admits that with work and family “it will be difficult”. The Ironman in Weymouth was the second Ironman that he has completed, having taken part in the South Cerney Classic Triathlon in June. It’s a remarkable achievement when you consider that Eliades, who lives in Gloucester and works at his dad’s barber’s in Cheltenham, took part in his first race of any kind only in 2015 when he ran the Cheltenham Half Marathon. And he did pretty well in that event as well. “We’d We d get customers coming into the shop and they said I wouldn’t finish under two hours,” Eliades recalled. “I said I would but they said ‘no chance’. “I was 15-and-a-half stone at the time but I did a bit of training and finished in one hour,r, 50. It was my first ever half and I got a real buzz from it.” And that was how it all started. “I used to do a lot of weightlifting,” he said. “I did all the bodybuilding, the powerlifting. A few of the lads at the gym did triathlon, they’d seen me swim and said, ‘You’re a good swimmer,, whyy don’t yyou do a triathlon?’” So he did, although his first one – the Cheltenham Triathlon – didn’t go exactly as planned. “The swimming wasn’t so good,” he admitted, “I had a panic attack, I nearly drowned! I just needed to get out of the water ASAP, P, I went off too fast.” But Eliades dug deep – “I really

Michael Eliades with some of his medals

enjoyed the bike and running,” he said – and vowed there and then to improve his swimming. “I had thre ee one-on-one sessions with coach Andy Gardner,” added Eliades. “Swimming was my weakest discipline, no ow it’s my strongest with my biking. “Running is my weakest, I’m working on it but I can run.” It’s appare pp ent that Eliades is veryy determined and he showed that when comp pleting the Ironman in Weymouth in very tough weather conditions, even though he had injured both his hips. “That was mental m strength,” he said. “Knowing th hat you can do it even though you are a injured, that was just amazing.” Eliades haas had to show huge fortitude in his h personal life too. His brother Georrge died in a car accident on Leckhampton Hill nine years ago and Eliades admits a it took him a long time to get over his brother’s death. “I was drinking a lot,” he said. “I was grieving and I went through a bad time but I eventually realised I couldn’t keep doing this, it wasn’t fair on my family. y.” And the rest as they say is history. y. Next year he’s already signed up for the Ironman 70.3 Staffordshire in June

and the Cardiff Triathlon Olympic distance two weeks later. That’s pretty tough but surely well within his capability when you consider over the past three years that’s he’s completed two Ironmans, completed a duathlon, run five half marathons, completed sprint and Olympic distance triathlons and a number of crosscountry runs, including the May Hill Massacre. He’s had plenty of support along the way of course – his good friends Lee Bell and Robin Hefter introduced him to triathlons, and he has recently joined Tri Team Glos after being encouraged to do so by another good friend Daryl Stroud. And his family have been big supporters too. His girlfriend Dawn, stepdaughter Chloe, dad Jim, mum Mary, y, sister Elena, brother-in-law Jacob, and nephew Dominic were all there to cheer him on in Weymouth in September. And Eliades has given plenty back too. “I raised £1,000 £ for the St John Care Trust for the t old people’s home in Brockworthh when I competed in South Cerney,” he said with understandable pride. “Every yeear I do something for them. Last year I helped raise money for a minibus whhen I took part in the London Triathlon.”

Venom

Snap p by Belinda Bauer

Superhero films are all the rage right now, w, and although Venom is technically a Marvel film, the title character is not your typical run of the mill hero. The film stars British actor Tom Hardy as renegade TV reporter Eddie Brock. Set in San Francisco and with Hardy doing his best American accent, Brock is sent to interview the billionaire science mogul Carlton Drake, played by fellow Brit Riz Ahmed. The interview sours as Brock dares to question Drake about his company’s experimentations on humans. This results in both Brock and his girlfriend losing their jobs, and subsequently their relationship and his life unravels. As things go on, Eddie ends up back inside Drake’s labs, and is infected by an alien li n “symbiote” “ bi t ” called ll d Venom. V At this point Hardy really ups his perform mance, as he battles the voice in his head which has seemingly given him h supernatural powers. Brockk is then hunted relentlessly by Drake’s goons, and we are taken on a brillianttly destructive motorbike chase. Full revview online.

Armistice 20118 Charlton Kings Rem members 100 years ago, on 11th November 1918, an armistice was declared to end 1,568 days of fighting in i the First World War – the ‘Great War’. During more than four years of war,r, 1,2290 soldiers from Cheltenham were killed, of whom 117 were from Charlton Kings and they are remembered on ouur War Memorial. The last name to be added to the memorial, in 2015, was William Joseph Hopkins of the British Expeditionary Force and he was, sadly, the second resident to be killed in action, just a month after the start of the war. On Saturday 10th November,r, 1,290 people, representing each of the lives lost, will join a WW1 Memorial March from Sandford Park to Montpellier Gardens. Each participant will carry the details (including a photograph where available) of one of the named casualties on Cheltenham’s war memorial. The Charlton Kings centenary Remembrance Day civic service will be held on Armistice Day, Sunday 11th November,r, at 10am by the war memorial. As has been the tradition for many years, residents will gather around the War memorial to ppayy their respects p to the fallen of both World Wars and those who have given their lives in more recent wars and conflicts. The final commemoration will take place from 5pm to 8pm on Sunday 11th where the municipal buildings will be the backdrop for a poignant projection of WW1 imagery and sound.

THE BIRD & DEER PARK PRINKNASH

OPEN 11.00am – 6.00pm

Opens 24th 25th of November – Every Weekend in December; Daily from the 21st – 24th of December Ticket price includes Visit to meet Santa, giftt, meeting the Christmas Fairy, illuminations and entr y to the park

The Bird & Deer Park has been hosting Christmas since 2008, and has been cited by the Huffington Post for its “beautiful lights”, the Sunday Telegraph for being “amongst the top 10 attractions to visit in rural England” and Featured on Points West last year. The Park’s Visitor Centre is lovely at any time, but with the wonderful Gift Shop, Café and great views of the illuminations from the balconies it has become a must for the Cotswolds as a Christmas treat.

If you choose to come when it is still light, then you can enjoy the park and all it has to offfer from the hand tame fallow deer through to feed time with the resident reindeer in the afternoon. However, as the evening closes in the illuminations come into their own, and as you walk around the park the sounds of birds, rushing water and glistening lights are really enchanting until you find the Gypsy Caravan where you will find our Christmas Fairy.

In The G Ga ard ar den with Julia Smith

It’s time to service your garden tools l November often sees the garden being used for Bonfire night parties. Nets of solar powered lights over large shrubs or trees look really effective, as do lanterns hung from boughs. However, there are still jobs that can be done to maintain your garden and ensure that next year it looks even better than it has this year!

Clean your greenhouse to avoid pests and diseases One of the chores in having a greenhouse is that it should really be cleaned every year to stop the build up of pests and diseases, and to keep the glass clean for maximum light. A dry, windy day would be ideal for this. Using a disinfectant such as Jeyes fluid, clean the benches, all the cracks and crevices which could house mealy bugs, and even wash h through th h the th graavell if you have it on your bench topss. This is one of those jobs that hangs over you like a big black cloud, c but once it’s done, it will make e you feel wonderful. You may even e be tempted to bore your family and

The Local Answer

friends by taking them into your clean greenhouse to look around – don’t expect the same inte erest from them! When the mowing has come c to a h lt later halt l t this thi month, th bookk your mower in to be servicced, thus beating the spring rush. No ow is also a good time to clean and oil tools, and send off secateurs to be sorted out if they are in a bit of a state. I must get around to doing mine

again soon. You can usually get them done for around £25 5.

Clear and compost fallen leaves from the lawn l Clear and compost falle en leaves from the lawn. You can le eave them on the borders, as long ass they are not covering evergree ens like heathers, as the worms will pull them down into the soil over the winter and by spring the ey will be gone! Leaf piles also serve e as great places for insects and hed dehogs to shelter in during the winte er months. Evergreen leaves like holly or laurel are something else and will not easily decompose – remove thesee from the borders. You can pput them on the lawn and run over them with the mower to help in the decom mposition, or simply pop them straight in your compost. The deciduous leeaves can be put into large bin bags w with a few holes in – half fill a bag and tie the top, then stack somewhere out of the way and use in your boorders the following autumn.

Serving the community – in every sense Gloucester Carpet Outlet have now been in business for six years during which time they have provided the whole of Gloucestershire with top quality carpet and flooring. A f te r m ov i n g i n to t h e i r h u g e s h ow r o o m a n d warehouse, officially opened by Gloucester MP Richard Graham two years ago, the business has continued to grow w,, with the original team remaining at the core to provide the same fantastic service. 2018 has also brought a nomination for Family Business of the Year at the Gloucestershire Business Awards, and the togetherness and continuity of their team is something owners Dan Leach and Ben Bryon are very proud of.

‘Biggest independent carpet retailer in Gloucestershire’ Dan said: “We’ve had mostly the same people here since the beginning, and now we’re up to 10 in store a l o n g w i t h 1 5 o u t o n t h e r o a d , 6 d ay s a w e e k . Providing good, regular employment for a growing number of local people is very satisfying for Ben and myself.” Every member of the company has a great wealth of knowledge and experience to help you with every step of the process, from choosing a new carpet or flooring, right through to fitting. Dan continued: “We pride ourselves on being the biggest independent carpet retailer in Gloucestershire. We always say ‘come in and get a quote’ – whether it’s for a small bathroom or a whole block of flats, we can sort it out.” Alongside their huge success as a business, Dan is

Gloucester MP Richard Graham (centre) with Dan (left) and Ben at the opening of the new showroom in November 2016

excited to be continuing the company’s great work in the community and with local sports sides, including his beloved Gloucester Rugby club for whom Gloucester Carpet Outlet are a major sponsor.

Making a positive impact in the local area “We still support many community projects and charities, and we love doing that – including things like the Dragon Boat Regatta in Gloucester Docks. We also enjoy delivering a great service to local organisations and have worked on six schools around the county over the summer – the commercial flooring side of the business is really taking off now.” Making a positive impact in the local area is definitely an important motive for Dan, Ben and the team. As Gloucester Carpet Outlet continue to develop and thrive, there is no doubt they will keep serving the community in an ever-improving fashion.

Cut out the middle men You’ll have heard plenty of times that buying locally sourced and produced food is far better for our environment, as it reduces the need to transport the food from farms, to factories, to supermarkets, and then home. However, an even better option is to cut out the middle men and try growing some food yourself! Not onlyy does it mean there is barely any travel involved, it also means you don’t have to use any nasty pesticides that inevitably drain into our soil and our rivers.

What if I’m a beginner? Just remember, everyone starts somewhere! If the idea of starting an allotment or even a garden patch is too daunting, instead try something like a herb garden, where you could grow basil, rosemary or even chillies. Herbs are some of the most unn unnecessary necessary things to buy already cut in plastic bags, which also contributes to plastic waste.

Why not try starting with some of the living herb pots. Many people think that herbs taste much better when they’re fresh, and it means that you’ll never be out of basil for your next spaghetti bolognese. Try putting them in a nice pot on your windowsill where they’ll get lots of sunshine, and remember to wate er them regularly. y. If you’re a beginner bu ut want to try something morre challenging, consider carrots or potatoes. Carrots are larrgely selfsufficient, but the challenge is that you usually cannot see what is wrong without digging them t up. They grow best in cooler weather, w so are perfect for early spring. However, be aware that your soil should be loose enough to allow them to grow downwards without splitting, and try to be pattient with them, as they can take tim me to fully

mature (unless you choose a fastmaturing type). Potatoes, on the other hand, require a lot of sun to maature, but also a lot of rain – approxim mately an inch a week, so make sure to give them a helping hand frrom your water butt if this is not achieved with just rain water. When n planting, try to avoid it being too cold or too wet, otherwise they are unlikely u to grow.

How about a challen nge? If you want a vegetable to show off, consider trying to grow a cauliflower. They are extremely e picky about the weather, meaning that you have to start the em when it’s not too cold but harvvest them before summer g gets to oo hot – something which isn’t aide ed by their long growing season. Alte ernatively, y, try a pumpkin that you can n show off around Halloween. Plant them around mid-June and ccreate an environment which is not too cold, is in a sunny position and h has waterretaining soil to help plump p them up to be carved. The Local Answer

Money Ma at tters with Roger Downes of Andorr ran ra

Disaster Protection For most small businesses, their greatest asset is also their biggest weakness. Well over half of small businesses would soon cease to function if anything happened to the entrepreneur who is running them. Planning business continuity in those circumstances is always going to be trick trickyy. You can surround yourself with a first-class team, but the leader of the gang is all too often an irreplaceable element. That risk is, however, in the entrepreneur’s hands. He or she can put in place systems, share workloads and work smarter, all of which will contribute to reducing the reliance on one person. The financial burden that would be felt by the business leader’s dependents and indeed by the firm itself, can, to some extent, be mitigated by suitable insurance policies.

What about the risks that are outside your own hands? But what about the risks that are outside your own hands? Fire and, in increasing measure, flood are also insurable risks, although whether the level of cover ever really compensates a business is a matter for debate. The loss of business development opportunity and the potentially uncomfortable working conditions whilst the property is repaired are not a lot of fun either. The modern threats to a business are cyber and terrorist attacks. Ask the businesses in Salisbury how their last six months have been since the Novichok poisoning incidents and I suspect you will be greeted with a rude response. And there is probably nothing that they could have done to prevent this happening; it was entirely outside their control.

Cyber attack is a very real threat to all of us Cyber attack is a very real threat to all of us. Those who would cause trouble are becoming more and more sophisticated, and the IT fraternity are having to run quite quickly just to keep ahead of them. Appropriate firewalls and anti-malware protections are a must for any computer equipment you use and there is a growing market in cyber insurance. Whilst that might provide some degree of financial compensation, I suspect the aftermath is as unpleasant in its own way as the flood or the fire. And let’s not even go into the possibility of a combined attack from the terrorist and cyber criminal...
