The The recovery recover y process process Following on from last month’s articles where we looked at some conceptual issues around recovery, this article is geared toward helping you with a reference point to manage a recovery routine to optimise your health and wellness.
C Cool ool d down own The recovery process begins as soon as you have completed a training session or physical activity, and starts with your cool down. This is a vital part of the recovery process, as it promotes the distribution of oxygenated blood around the body and helps to restore a ‘normal’ joint range of motion and length-tension in muscles. It is also an ideal time to review the session and get feedback from your body. What felt good, and what could be improved in your next session?
A Alcohol lcohol The next thing to manage for optimal recovery is your alcohol intake. If you enjoy a drink or two then you’re probably fine, but regular bouts of heavy drinking will play havoc with your recovery and overall health. Alcohol reduces protein synthesis in the body, along with levels of certain vitamins, while promoting dehydration. A worst-case scenario is heavy drinking after a game or training, with poor food intake and only a few hours’ sleep. Combining the dehydration and energy sapping effects of high intensity activity with a high volume of alcohol and lack of sleep has a massive negative influence on your recovery process. The 100-point Recovery Checklist is easy to build into a busy The Local Answer

Trending T rending ttrench rench coats coats April showers bring spring flowers; so the saying goes. 2020 brings the return of the old classic trench coat.
B Burberry urberry If you were to purchase a Burberry, this would be considered an investment, as they are priced outside most people’s budgets. However, they have certainly moved with the times and alongside the classic beige with chequered lining or adornments, this season if you have a spare £1,890 you can have yourself a very smart black Burberry trench coat with a gorgeous leopard trim. I never tire of saying animal prints are here to stay for the foreseeable future.
The Burberry heritage range is slightly kinder on your wallet at £750, but it is a classic and will stand the test of time. When you purchase a Burberry ‘Mac’ you are buying into a small slice of history. Thomas Burberry founded his first shop in Basingstoke in 1856, and went on to supply weather-proof gabardine coats to the WW1 soldiers in the trenches; hence the name trench coat. Now we have the likes of Billie Eilish who, at only 18 years of age, has a number one hit with her new James Bond song ‘No Time to Die’. At the recent BRIT awards she was kitted out head to toe in Burberry – even her fingernails. This is great advertising for the brand, as it is desired worldwide by all age groups and is easily recognisable.
Aquascutum A quascutum This is another understated British style brand also famed for their rainwear. Aquascutum actually pre-dated Burberry by five years as it was founded in 1851 – the year of the Great Exhibition. The tailor John Emary opened a high end menswear shop in Regent Street, now sadly closed, but an Aquascutum shop can be found at 24 Great Marlborough Street in Soho, in case you want to indulge when you are next in London! Prices are slightly more reasonable than Burberry for a good quality classic men’s and The Local Answer

women’s beige raincoat. Expect to pay in the region of £695 and up for ladies’, and the men’s can range from £650 for a short jacket style rain coat. One must bear in mind these are quality garments and this is what you are paying for.
French F rench C Connection onnection Men who do not want a classic trench coat look can find a great navy and black biker jacket with lots of stylish quilting in the French Connection premium line for £395. Match this with their premium quality stretch jeans for £70 and you will have the look of the season.
Primark P rimark At the other end of the market, Primark has rainwear in classic beige for under £30. In fact, all the high street shops are well stocked in every colour and price range, for both men and women; so who cares if it rains! Enjoy browsing and finding a style that works for you. Page

R Raising aising children children in in the the digital digital age age Like many parents, I daresay you read the headlines about the evils of modern technology. Maybe you are of the ‘no TV, no devices’ approach, preferring your children to read, make things and play outside. If that is the case, then all power to you, but for many, screen time is a mainstay of modern life and it looks like it’s here to stay. So what is the best way to support your children, allow them to navigate the virtual world without turning grey?
E Establish stablish b boundaries oundaries As always, the first port of call is establishing boundaries. Although most effective when introduced at an early age, it is never too late to change and reaffirm the boundaries you want to maintain. Rather than approaching the issue as a struggle to overcome, it is easier for everyone if screen time is incorporated into a wider plan of action. Linking screen time to certain times of the day and creating a sense of pride in the kids for

following the rules is highly effective. Children who actively look forward to their ‘screen time’ and can self regulate – turning off when a programme has ended or when a certain game level is reached and receiving praise and affirmation for their choices – will grow up confident a n d w i t h a n i n n a t e ab i l i t y t o trust themselves. However, a lack of clear boundaries or understanding as to what is expected of them can leave our kids feeling lost and confused, leading to parental involvement being repeatedly negative, critical and frustrating. Finding points of connection where you can listen to them and let them know you are available is key, so try to avoid only ever talking to your teen to tell them to clean their room or have a shower! A cup of tea and a heartfelt ‘I love you’ goes a long way with our older offspring, and it makes you feel good too!
C Children hildren n need eed a rrange ange o off llearning earning e experiences xperiences With little ones, there are many great children’s programmes and games that they will enjoy, and that will indeed aid their learning. As long as they are supported with physical play and a wide range of learning experiences in life, they will thrive. But remember, your phone is no replacement for your attention, so while it may keep your toddler quiet for a while, eye contact and conversation is so much more valuable. Sharing screen time and mummy/daddy time is a sure-fire way to keep your young ones on track as they grow up in the digital age. Page 11

Revision Revision techniques techniques aand nd sstrategies trategies Learning is an ongoing process, but when exams are looming, revision of topics is required so that information is fresh in your mind. You may groan or cower at the mention of revision, and it may seem monotonous, but there are ways to make it more compelling. Do you know what kind of learner you are? There are three main learning styles: visual, auditory and kinaesthetic.
V Visual isual learners learners Visual learners like reading, pictures, diagrams and colours. When revising, write out key points onto flash cards, make them colourful and draw pictures to help you remember important facts.
A Auditory uditory llearners earners If you are an auditory learner, you prefer hearing information rather than seeing it, so listening to talks on videos or podcasts may be your preference. To review your past

learning, speak aloud so that your ears hear the information again; record key facts onto an electronic device so that you can play them back to yourself over and over. You might use different voices to make it more interesting.
K Kinaesthetic inaesthetic learners learners Kinaesthetic learners like to feel and be doing. To aid your memory, use your hands to make models; walk about as you read or speak and use your body to provide actions that emphasize essential ideas. In essence, the best way to learn is by using all three of these modalities – use colour and pictures, sounds and videos; use movement and get creative with making things. It may seem obvious, but the more extravagant you can make your revision aids, the more memorable the information will be. Other general advice for revision includes not leaving it

all until the last minute! Start weeks in advance and pace yourself – maybe create a schedule of what you need to revise and when. Setting a timer can be useful so that you revise in short bursts. Take breaks in between revision sessions, get away from your desk, and do something completely different to take your mind off it. This also gives your brain time to consolidate the information you have just been looking at. You could also think up some incentives to get yourself going, and after you’ve done some revision make sure you treat yourself with something you enjoy like messaging friends or playing a game, or something that’s good for you such as a walk in the park or a healthy snack. Exam time can be stressful for families as well as students themselves, so it helps when parents support their youngsters and encourage them to work hard and do well – without putting too much pressure on them. Give your children time alone to study, but also urge them to get on with it if they are being too lax! Page 15

A Alabama labama R Rot ot – in in tthe he p press ress aagain! gain! Alabama Rot, or Cutaneous and Renal Glomerular Vasculopathy (CRGV), continues to strike fear in pet owners up and down the country. In 2019 there were 29 cases, bringing the total to 219 confirmed cases since it was first diagnosed in the UK in 2012. It has a worryingly high mortality rate of about 80%. To date there have been six cases in Gloucestershire with a single confirmed case in Cheltenham.
IItt ccan an ccause ause u ulcerative lcerative skin skin lesions lesions The condition was first recognised in Alabama in the US (hence the name) and seemed to affect mostly greyhounds. It is thought that a toxin produced by certain strains of bacteria caused ulcerative skin lesions but then progressed to cause irreversible kidney damage. Efforts to determine the exact bacteria or toxin that causes the condition in the UK have so far been unrewarding, so as a result there is no vaccine available and treatment is aimed at resolving the skin lesions and monitoring and supporting kidney function. Diagnosis is also difficult and often only possible on post mortem.
A Associated ssociated w with ith wintery/muddy wintery/muddy w walks alks iin n the the countryside countryside 90% of all cases are diagnosed in the colder/ damper months of November through to May. Often it is thought to be associated with wintery/ muddy walks in woods or the countryside, but the exact triggers are still to be established. Significant research is ongoing. General advice is to wash off muddy paws at the end of a walk to reduce potential bacterial exposure. If your dog does develop unexplainable skin ulcers or sores then you should take them to your vet straight away, but be reassured it is still an extremely rare condition.

Why W hy C Charlton harlton K Kings ings iis s tthe he P Place lace tto o be! be! Charlton Kings Tennis Place has always prided itself on the fact that it provides something for everyone. If you want to play fun tennis you can, if you want to play serious tennis you are just as welcome, and for those who want to get better there is a top drawer coaching programme in place. Now the club, which is based at Balcarras School in Charlton Kings, is offering even more because they have been able to more than double the number of courts they’ve got from three to seven. “This season is really exciting for us as we will be using an additional four courts that were constructed last autumn at the school,” said Simon Thomas, who helps run the club with his wife Ruth. “This is great news for us as previously we have been close to capacity so we weren’t

able to push for new members.” The club, which was formed in 2008, currently has some 160 members but Thomas is hopeful that number could increase in years to come. “I’d like to get it up even further in the next three to five
years, that’s the aim,” said 52year-old Thomas. “The club has really developed since it was formed, it’s been fantastic.” And the club really has developed because last year they won Gloucestershire LTA’s community and parks venue award and two years ago Balcarras School, with whom the tennis club work very closely, won the national LTA education award. “We’ve also won coach and club of the year awards so have built some recognition,” added Thomas. Indeed they have. The club operates from April until the end of October although from September it is weekends only. They have two teams competing in the Gloucestershire Ladies’ Summer League and one team in the men’s county league and also offer an extensive coaching programme. Full story online.

Ryan Ryan Higgins Higgins fired fired up up for for new new sseason eason Ryan Higgins is one of those real top drawer all-rounders. s When you see him bat you think he’s a batting all-rounder and when he’s bowling you think he must be a bowling all-rounder. The figures don’t lie – the 25year-old has enjoyed huge success since joining Gloucestershire from Middlesex for the start of the 2018 season. He has made runs aplenty and has also been a regular wickettaker with his bustling, sharper than medium pace. And the great thing from Gloucestershire’s viewpoint is that he has been producing standout performances in all formats of the game – in the four-day county championship, in 50overs cricket and in T20. And in a few months’ time there’s every chance we’ll be adding a fourth specialism to his impressive CV because he’s been selected to play for Welsh Fire in the much-heralded Hundred competition, where he will line up with and against some of the biggest names in world cricket. And it’s not just in the quickest of quickfire formats that he will be taking on some of the world’s finest in 2020 because for the first time since the midnoughti es, Gl oucest ershi re will be competing in the top flight of the county championship this season. It’s no wonder Higgins can’t wait for the new campaign to start. “It’s really exciting,” he said. “When I first came to Gloucestershire one of the aims was to get into Division One, now we’re there we are all very happy.” And since winning promotion, Gloucestershire have worked hard to strengthen the side, with former West Indies fast bowler Jerome Taylor and all-rounder George Scott joining on longterm contracts, India Test batting star Cheteshwar Pujara linking up for the early part of the season, and Afghanistan leg-spinner Qais Ahmad signing up for the second half of the campaign.
Ryan Higgins has been in outstanding form since joining Gloucestershire
“It shows the intent of the club,” said Higgins. “It shows that we want to stay up and cement our place in Division One. “We don’t want to be there for just one season, we don’t want to be a yo-yo club.” While Scott and Ahmad have bags of potential, Taylor and Pujara are proven on the biggest stages, with Pujara still a major player in Test cricket. And they’ll certainly strengthen Chris Dent’s largely youthful team as they go toe-to-toe with the likes of champions Essex, Surrey and Yorkshire in the purest form of the county game. Higgins played a handful of games in Division One for Middlesex in 2017 and is certainly not daunted by moving up a level this season. “I was talking to some of the players from Kent and they were saying that there isn’t as big a gap as you’d expect,” he said. “There are obviously two or three players in each team who stand out and the standard is going to be a step up, but the pitches will be better which will help the batters, although it may be a bit tougher for the bowlers.” Higgins has proved over the past couple of years that there’s nothing he likes more than a
challenge and that’s going to stand him in very good stead in the coming months because he’s entering uncharted waters this season once the new Hundred competition kicks in in the middle of July. And that tournament is a challenge that Higgins can’t want to take on. He’s in a Welsh Fire squad that includes world class Australian duo Steve Smith and Mitchell Starc, as well as England batting star Jonny Bairstow. Gloucestershire left-arm seamer David Payne is also in the squad and Higgins said: “It’s very exciting. “I remember watching the draft and to get selected was awesome, it was an amazing feeling.” The eight-team tournament, which starts on Friday 17th July, features many of the best players in the world and Higgins added: “I just need to make sure that when I get the chance I play well.” Gloucestershire’s county championship season gets under way against Yorkshire at Headingley on Sunday 12th April (11am) and their T20 campaign begins on Friday 29th May with a floodlit tie at Somerset (6.30pm). All All ssystems ystems g go o ffor or L London ondon M Marathon arathon It’s probably a good job that James Bingham will have a number of running mates with him when he heads to London for the city’s showpiece marathon in a few weeks’ time. That’s because, whisper it quietly, just over a month ago Bingham didn’t make it to his intended destination in the capital after leaving his home in Cheltenham. “I caught the 6am train for a meeting in London,” said Bingham, who works for a local IT firm. “But I got distracted helping an elderly lady off the platform during my change at Bristol… then watched my luggage disappear off into the sunset to Paignton! “GWR were great, but then began my treasure hunt via Cross Rail to track down my luggage.” Fortunately, Bingham has a very good boss – the meeting was rescheduled – and it’s also fair to say that he’ll be more alert when the London Marathon comes around on Sunday 26th April, a race that gets under way a little later than 6am! His three running mates on that big day will be Alex Lee, Dave Aubrey and Rich Dare, who, like 42-year-old Bingham, are members of Cheltenham Harriers. Bingham was something of a latecomer to the sport – he didn’t join the Harriers until 2012 and the London Marathon will be only the second time he has run 26.2 miles. “The first time was in Snowdon – talk about picking an easy one! – in 2011, I wasn’t really a runner back then,” he said. “I’m hoping to improve on that performance, I ran 3.05 or 3.06,
James Bingham
I’m hoping to knock half-an-hour off that.” And there’s every likelihood that he will because since joining the Harriers his running career has certainly taken off. “They’re such an excellent club,” said Bingham. “It’s a close, tight-knit group of like-minded people. We’re very individual but there’s a very strong team camaraderie.” Bingham, who was born and raised in Northamptonshire, wasn’t particularly focused on any given sport before he got bitten by the running bug, so how did he get into running? “I entered a fun run for charity in 2008 or 2009,” he explained. “It was the Mud Runner at Eastnor Castle, it was your classic muddy charity run but I really enjoyed it. “I found out that I was quite competitive and I wanted to get better, that was the trigger.” And he was soon making up for lost time.
“I finished around 150th in that first race,” he said, “but over the course of the next two years I became their series champion, I won every race.” And Bingham, who discovered only a couple of years ago that his late grandfather was a good cross-country runner back in the day, still likes running in the mud today. “I would say crosscountry is my strength,” he said. “I find running in the mud the most interesting and I recently got a bronze in the Gloucestershire County Championships. “I’ve had better results off-road than on-road, I’d say I’m probably most competitive over 10K.” The stats would back that up because he placed first in his age category at the Gloucester South West Inter-Counties 10km Championships and he has clocked up some seriously good times. He has also recently been crowned the Gloucester Cross Cou ntry Leag ue M40 cha mpion for the four-race series. His personal best – at the time of writing – for 10K is 32.22, a time he recorded in January, and he’s got some other pretty impressive numbers too. “My PB for the half-marathon is 1.12.27 and 15.56 for the 5K,” Bingham said. They are all good times but running a marathon is a step up in distance so what persuaded Bingham to take on the big challenge that is the London Marathon? “I was motivated to do it because I know what a privilege it is to take part in the race,” he said. C Chris hris Burns Burns took took on on game’s game’s finest finest It’s not far short of 30 years since Chris Burns, one of Gloucestershire’s finest ever footballers, went toe-to-toe with some of the very best players from one of the great clubs, not once, but twice at the semi-final stage in the game’s leading club knockout competition. The competition was the FA Cup of course – and back in 1992 it was a trophy that every club in the land was really desperate to win – and the now 52-year-old Burns, a Brockworth boy through and through, was in the Portsmouth side who went so, so close to producing one of the great cup upsets. Only a goal four minutes from extra time by Ronnie Whelan denied Portsmouth victory in the first game at Highbury – it ended 1-1 – and the then Division Two club took the Anfield giants to extra time again eight days later at Villa Park. Again there was nothing to separate the two clubs after 120 minutes – the game was goalless – but it was Liverpool, with their greater experience of the big occasion, who edged the penalty shootout to book their Wembley final place, a final that saw them beat Sunderland 2-0. That Liverpool team were chock-full with some of the great names of the game – Ian Rush, John Barnes, Bruce Grobbelaar, Steve McManaman and Ray Houghton to name just a few – but to this day Burns believes it was a tie that Portsmouth should have won. In those days Burns was playing in centra l midfield – former Arsenal and England man Michael Thomas was directly opposite him – and he featured in all 240 minutes against the mighty Reds. “It’s the one we let get away,” he said. “Over the two games we were the better side, we should have won. “They were a fantastic team, so experienced but we had a really good team – Darren
Chris Burns played for Portsmouth against Liverpool in the FA Cup semi-final in 1992 and, right, in his Gloucester days. Picture: Tony Hickey
Anderton, Mark Chamberlain, Andy Awford, Kit Symons.” And Portsmouth certainly weren’t overawed by their illustrious opponents. “Not at all,” said Burns, “we didn’t think like that. It may have been Ian Rush and John Barnes but we had a job to do, we wanted to win the game. “I just had to be as good as them on the day, I was up against Michael Thomas and over the two games I thought I was better than him, that’s what our manager Jim Smith told me.” So does Burns look back at what might have been? “No, not at all,” he said. “No regrets, I had a great career.” He certainly did. The one-time Cheltenham Town, Gloucester City and Forest Green Rovers player made 90 appearances for Portsmouth from 1990 to 1994 and also played for Northampton Town, Swansea City and Bournemouth. Born in Manchester – he came into the world two months earlier than expected when his parents were visiting the city – he learned his football in what was then a little village just outside Gloucester, the place that he has always considered to be ‘home’. That village was Brockworth of course and he said: “My uncles used to play for Brockworth United.
“In those days there were two Saturday teams in Brockworth – Brockworth AFC and Brockworth United, they both played in Division One of the Cheltenham League. “I remember one year they both got to the final of the Senior Cup at Whaddon Road,” adding with a laugh, “Brockworth AFC won, my uncles didn’t perform that day!” His uncles were Colin, Dave and Phil Thomas – they were his mum Jean’s brothers – and they and his grandad Alfred played a big part in the life of the young Chris Burns. And a big part of those early years was spent playing football. “I was kicking a ball from an early age, I was kicking a ball before I could even walk,” laughed Burns. He also supported Manchester United from a young age – well, he was born in Manchester! Brockworth United wore the same red shirts as Manchester United and Burns recalled: “I grew up with Steve Coppell, Gordon Hill, Lou Macari, Martin Buchan, they were all top players.” Burns played his junior football in Gloucester and had a few adult games in Brockworth before spending a season with Sharpness ahead of his big move to Cheltenham at the age of 19. Poetry Festival Poetr y F estival celebrates celebrates landmark landmark Poets and writers from across the country will be flocking to Cheltenham this month to celebrate a very special event. This year marks the 10th annual Cheltenham Poetry Festival, and founder Anna Saunders says she never imagined the event would be as successful as it has been. “No, I didn’t dream when we launched in 2011 that we would be lucky enough to have a decade of festivals!” she said. “We have been incredibly lucky really, we have very supportive audiences that come back year after year.” Over the years the festival has hosted some huge names from the world of poetry, including John Cooper Clarke and Kim Moore, and this year will be no different, with one of the UK’s most beloved poet laureates set to appear.
Carol Ann Duffy
“We decided to have a big celebratory party for our 10th year,” continued Anna, “and we have invited Carol Ann Duffy to headline – she will be reading with three other acclaimed poets.” Whilst the festival does bring poets from all over the country,
Film Film Review Review – Joe Joe K Kennett ennett
there is also a focus on promoting local Gloucestershire creatives. “We have always aimed to provide a stage to internationally acclaimed visiting writers and to some of the exciting, emerging and established names that live in the area,” said Anna. “Gloucestershire is an absolute hotbed of talent! We have some revered names living in the area as well as a flourishing ‘open mic’ scene.” And Anna – herself a five-time published poet – will be releasing a new collection of poetry at the festival. “It's called Feverfew and is due out on Thursday 16th April with Indigo Dreams (publishers),” she added. ‘Onward’ follows brothers Ian (Tom Holland) and Barley (Chris Pratt) as they embark on an old world quest to retrieve an almighty gem capable of bringing their dad, who passed when they were too young to remember him, back to life to spend a final 24 hours with them. Pixar humanises figures of fantasy, bringing suburban life to a community of elves, where unicorns are akin to cats who screech at each other over scraps of food, and dragons are overexcitable dogs who bound around causing chaos, creating the perfect balance of relatable realism and wacky fantasy. Laugh-inducing and tearjerking from beginning to end, ‘Onward’ encapsulates what Disney Pixar does best. Bring tissues and get ready to fall in love with a new host of unlikely f riendships. Local EP L ocal band band excited excited ffor or E P rrelease elease Local band THIEVES are looking forward to releasing their first ever EP this month. Made up of friends Matthew Cooper (vocals), Conor Robertson (guitar), Harrison Stanford (bass) and Matt Wright (drums), THIEVES formed back in 2018. “We all met via college and friends of friends,” explained lead singer Matthew. “We formed THIEVES because we wanted to each express our passion for writing and performing music.” The boys are well known on the music circuit in Cheltenham, and they say that their eclectic music tastes mean the music they play is quite distinctive. “We’d describe our sound as fairly unique,” continued Harrison. “Each of us has a pretty different taste in music and we all draw our inspiration from

very varied sources – when it all comes together, it becomes difficult to put us in a genre.” The process of coming up with new tracks is something the boys enjoy, and they will be playing some of their latest tracks when they launch their brand new EP later this month. Matt added: “After vigorous debate between an album and an EP, we decided a summer album would be more fitting.
“It’s been written over the course of a couple of years, ensuring we were 100% about all decisions, without overthinking and just letting it flow. “We’re extremely excited to get it out into the world and let everybody know what we have been working on for so long.” THIEVES will be launching their EP at The Frog and Fiddle on Friday 10th April. K Kim im C Cypher ypher on on her her ‘For ‘For Mum’ Mum’ project project April marks Jazz Appreciation Month, so it’s no surprise that popular saxophonist, vocalist and composer Kim Cypher is as busy as ever. She is currently touring her latest album ‘Love Kim x’, and has been for well over a year, performing in venues in Cheltenham, London and beyond. Kim has recently released a new song, entitled ‘All For You’, in tribute to her late mum, which she first performed at a special concert at the beginning Kim Cypher and Ray Gelato. Picture: Ron Milsom of March. I decided, rather than decline “I was offered a gig at the the gig, I would instead plan a prestigious Pizza Express Live big charity concert to celebrate Soho,” explained Kim. my mum’s life.” “I noted that the date signified The concert saw Kim perform the 20th anniversary of losing alongside her band – including my mum so was unsure whether husband Mike – and jazz legend to accept the gig. “However, after some thought, Ray Gelato.
“It was an amazing night, but it was all a bit of a blur,” she continued. “Coming back from London it hit me how well the evening had gone and I felt very relieved and proud.” The concert, combined with a JustGiving page set up by Kim, has managed to raise just shy of £2,500 so far for The Brain Tumour Charity. Kim says it was only fitting they should raise money for the charity on the night dedicated to her mum, who passed away due to a brain tumour. “It was quite emotional,” confessed Kim, “but I was determined for it to not be a sad occasion but a celebration. The audience was superb – a lot came down from Cheltenham by coach – it was very overwhelming.” Full story online.

ne lectric C Considering onsidering aan electric ccar ar – is is it it e nough? enough? I’ve been feeling incredibly guilty about my vehicle emissions for a while now. Every time I drive for the school run (often with this terrible weather lately) I watch the fumes from the cars around me swirling up into the ether and am consumed with angst about the fact that my car is doing the same. So I started researching electric cars.
Think Think ccarefully arefully a about bout which m which model odel you you go go for for One of the biggest issues for me is range. Unless you have a very big budget and can afford a car that does hundreds of miles and recharges in minutes while you drink a coffee in a service station, you need to think a bit carefully about which model you are going to go for. I’m terrible for planning and I also get a lot of anxiety about

trips at the best of times and would be really worrying about the chargers not working at the service station, or (which I think would be more likely these days!) them all being in use! So that has led me to look at hybrids. A battery meaning I can do all my local running around emission free, and then if the worst happens and I can’t recharge for whatever reason on a longer journey (I feel I’d struggle on my trips back through Wales) I have the backup of an engine. But then I start to question myself again – is that good enough? And I think that sums up the way I feel generally about the environment at the moment. Is what I’m doing, or attempting to do, good enough?

We recycle and we try to find alternative routes to school, I’ve made a whole heap of changes to how we buy and live but ultimately, we are certainly leaving our mark on the planet as a family, despite our efforts. And with the local flooding and the terrible fires recently in Australia, it can feel as though we, as a world aren’t doing enough.
It’s It’s important important tto oa also lso look look for for the the positives positives But then maybe it would all be so much worse now without the things we have done. It’s important to also look for the positives. There are incredible initiatives reported every day – plastic bag equivalents made from plants that break down to nothing, amazing inventions to clean up the sea, people talking about the environment and doing their best to do better. I’m trying to take comfort from that, and continuing to educate my children on how they can live a more sustainable life. I hope by making small changes daily, and making bigger changes where I can, soon I will be able to feel much less guilty. Page 41

The The nodding nodding heads heads of of bluebells bluebells At last spring is really here and everything is bursting with life. British gardens typically look at their best in spring and early summer when everything seems to be gearing itself up for a spectacular display of colour. As daffodils finish flowering, the faded flowerheads can be removed. The small daffodils which are being grown to naturalise can be left to form seedheads. Don’t cut off the foliage – it needs at least six weeks’ dying to replenish the bulb underneath so it can flower the following year. Also, don’t tie up daffodils in strange bundles with elastic bands, as this can damage the leaves as well as being very odd-looking!

will be coming out this month. Unfortunately, they are under threat from the Spanish bluebell, which is grown in gardens as it was considered more decorative than its English cousin. How to tell them apart? Well the English bluebell (Hyacinthoides non-scripta) has scented flowers borne on one side of the stem, the anthers are cream-coloured and unequal, and the flower spike is nodding. The Spanish bluebell (H.hispanica) has unscented flowers borne on all sides of the stem. It has blue equal anthers and an upright flower spike. So take care with what you plant (under no circ u m s t a n c e s h a rv e s t a n y from the wild!), sourcing them from reputable retailers, and you too could enjoy the fragrance of your own little bluebell patch. Keep a lookout for the red lily beetles on newly emerging lily shoots. Pick them off and squash them, and if you are not averse to the use of chemicals, use a systemic spray like Provado Ultimate Bug Killer to keep them safe for up to six weeks.
Feed F eed your your fruit fruit b bushes ushes With having such a wet winter it might be a good idea to feed your fruit bushes – the rain washes all the goodness from the soil. A balanced general fertiliser such as Gromore or blood, fish and bone can be applied at about 70g per square metre to give them a boost. Now is the time to make successional sowings of beetroot, chard and radishes outdoors ready for gathering in July and August. Follow the instructions on the packet, sowing in an area where the soil has been carefully raked to a fine tilth and don’t forget to label the rows! Page 45

W Wake ake up up to to spring spring It feels like spring has been a long time coming. If you’re like me, you start to crave more light and colour when the sun starts to stream in after the long, grey months of winter. The good news is, homeware shops are brimming with new fabrics, wallpaper and furniture. Celebrate the new season by following my tips to give your home a spring update.
P Pastel astel p perfect erfect An easy way to brighten up your home is to introduce pastel colours into a neutral scheme. Think petal inspired hues. Blush pink looks great matched with grey sofas for a midcentury living room scheme. I paired a soft, greyish-lilac with taupe in my bedroom – it feels so calm and restful. Fresh green walls with white tiles look clean and chic for a bathroom. For a warm welcome, paint your front door a sunny daffodil yellow and accessorise with grey metal planters.
Floral F loral cchic hic I am a bit of a fan of florals (my first home was all Laura
Ashley). The good news is that flowers feature strongly in the new spring fabric and wallpaper collections. Inspired by a trip to Japan earlier in the year, I am particularly drawn to the oriental style wallpapers. Little Greene’s lovely Belton design would look stunning in a hall or small bedroom, or for a real statement think about a wallpaper mural. Check out the gorgeous chinoiserie designs at www.surfaceview.co.uk or visit www.rockettstgeorge.co.uk for more inspiration. And remember you can always pick up a contemporary floral design on a single chair or a cushion.
Spring S pring blooms blooms Fresh flowers bring spring into your home and are a sure-fire way to lift your spirits. There are so many glorious spring flowers to choose from and you may find some growing in your garden that you can harvest. Mix daffodils with forsythia, masses of dark purple tulips, or white hyacinths always look stunning. Add some pussy willow branches for height,
Image: Little Greene
then dry them and create a year -round sculptural arrangement.
Natural Natural selection selection The new spring furniture ranges feature lots of natural cane and rattan – perfect for a lighter spring/summer natural look for your décor. There are some great cost-effective pieces available online – check out the rattan fold up dining chairs at H&M, or the round black bamboo mirror at Trouva. Be sustainable by searching out old pieces and make them look this season by revamping them with a lick of paint in jade green, coral or on-trend classic blue.
Easter E aster tablescape tablescape For that seasonal finishing touch, dress up your lunch table for Easter. Create an Easterthemed table with pastel hued napkins and coloured glasses, then scatter around cute and charming eggs, chicks and bunnies. For a quick and stylish decoration, arrange white painted branches in a large vase and hang hand painted eggs on it – great fun to make with the kids. Happy Easter! The Local Answer
