STAINED GLASS WINDOW BISCUITS
Delicious Dishes
1 Preheat oven to 180C, fan 160C, gas 4. Line 2 baking trays with baking parchment. 2 Using an electric hand mixer, beat the butter and sugar together in a large bowl until pale and fluffy. Beat in the egg and add the vanilla extract. 3 Fold in the flour and stir until combined. You may need to add a little extra if it is too sticky, but don’t over mix. 4 Halve the dough and roll into 2 flat discs. Wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge for 1 hour.
Makes approx 30. Something for the children to make to hang on the christmas tree or to give as a gift to friends or family.
Ingredients: 175g unsalted butter, softened 200g caster sugar 1 medium egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 400g plain flour, plus extra for dusting 1x 250g bag of clear fruits (boiled sweets) coloured ribbon, for hanging biscuits on tree
5 On a surface dusted with flour, roll out the pastry to a thickness of 0.5cm. Using a 10cm star-shaped cutter, cut out stars and place on the baking trays. 6 Stamp out a small hole in the middle of each star, the same size as the boiled sweets. Place one sweet into each hole. Using a skewer, make a small hole in the top of each star (to hang on the christmas tree later). Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until turning golden. Cool on a wire rack. 7 If hanging your biscuits, thread some ribbon through the hole in each biscuit and tie a knot in the end. Keep in an airtight container until needed.

Cheltenham
The name of our town of Cheltenham comes from the small river which rises in the hills to the east and eventually flows into the Severn. It was only a hamlet during the 10th Century – part of the Kingdom of Mercia – and had a population of around two hundred people. In 1226 a weekly market was established by Royal Consent – presumably on the site of Market Street, just off the Gloucester Road. This drew-in people from surrounding areas to trade and establish relationships. It was a farming area, and slow growing in terms of population. Four hundred years later only about 1,500 people lived here. A Grammar School was founded in 1578 and the area had become well known for brewing, tanning and general leather working.
Becoming a ‘Spa’
Discovery of the mineral waters (1740s) changed the area forever. After King George III visited in 1788, new springs were sought out and established, and Cheltenham became a very fashionable place for the gentry to build second houses to which they migrated during ʻthe seasonʼ. The population had doubled to around 3,000, but the arrival of these new would-be home owners meant that this expanded rapidly – they all needed servants, tradesmen, merchants and suppliers of all kinds of goods. By 1850 Cheltenham had grown to accommodate 30,000. Many fine new buildings were erected such as Royal Crescent, The Promenade, the various Pump Rooms and both the Gentlemanʼs and Ladies Colleges.
Trams in the main streets
Mains services – water, sewerage and gas were laid down and electricity arrived in 1895. The turn of the 20th Century saw the population rise to over 50,000 – trams ran in the main streets and seven railway stations established. For the first time there was light engineering here and the firm of HH Martyn built its fabrication works at Suningend – eventually employing a workforce of over 1,000. During World War II, the population of Cheltenham grew tremendously – the Government moved some of its most secret establishments here, and ʻshadowʼ factories of companies manufacturing vital war supplies followed – mainly allied to the aircraft industry – to be largely out of the range of regular aerial bombardment. The workforce needed to operate these resulted in a serious shortage of accommodation. Workers were billeted with local families by compulsion, as the population nearly doubled. Today, the size of Cheltenhamʼs residents has stabilized at around 110,000 as it struggles to avoid merging with the nearby City of Gloucester.

Success for our junior players at the Old Patesians RFC is very important to us. We want every one of our 400 young players to enjoy their rugby and feel that they have succeeded in achieving their best in this great game. We believe that by focusing on developing the players as individuals, success as a team will come. ‘Tis the season to be jolly’ etc. etc, and hopefully it will be a lovely crisp bright month with plenty of sun. There is even time to do some planting still before the coldest weather of the season arrives in January/February, so if it’s suitable and not too waterlogged or frozen, container grown deciduous trees and shrubs can still be planted. Now, Christmas trees. I’m sorry but it has to be a real tree as far as I am concerned – the drop resistant ones are lovely, although quite pricey but probably worth it if you don’t want to be picking needles out of the shagpile till Easter! However whatever tree you buy if it has a cut end it will need watering every day. Saw off the bottom few inches when you get it home as you would with cut flowers and put the base in a container of water and top up regularly. Plant of the month has to be holly or to give it its proper name Ilex. The variegated variety grown as a standard (like a pom-pom) will be full of berries and looks so lovely flagging a nice front door. Now for some ideas for Christmas prezzies for the lovely gardener in your life or even to buy yourself (go on, you deserve it - you’ve been tending that garden all year!) Things that I would like in my stocking, right firstly Sarah Raven does brilliant plant labels which are black and the pack of 10 with a white pen comes in at £7.50 a pack. Next I use the cheapest gloves for gardening and the ones I like are Showa 310 gloves which are sold for builders etc. Look at the webpage www.bexpress.co.uk/showagloves. They are great value at only just over £2 a pair so to make the postage and packing worthwhile you need to buy several pairs at a time. Now for something expensive and lovely how about a personalised solid oak bench £355 from www.notonthehighstreet.com? Of course if you really want to show how much you love your other half why not buy them a garden replanting design, or makeover? This could ensure that your garden is easy maintenance in the future (and thus cut down on your workload – think about it!), see my website for details. In April 2013 we will witness the biggest change to the Pay As You Earn system since its inception just after the second world war. It始s called Real Time Information (RTI for short) and will require all employers to inform HMRC before or at the same time as any wage payment is made. All sound simple to you? Not in business and therefore nothing to do with you? Wrong on both counts. We are told that the system has been designed as part of the Government始s crackdown on benefit cheats. Of course if it helps to achieve that, we are all in favour. Quite whether and how HM Revenue and Customs will be able to use all the data to good effect is yet to be proved. For employers it will mean changing business disciplines to ensure that they have the relevant information available, that their software will cope and that their employees are aware of the data that is being submitted about them. Will those changes to business disciplines affect you as an employee? There may be alterations to pay frequency (especially if you are paid weekly), to the way in which you are paid or an increase in questions from the authorities, especially if the information flow within HMRC is not 100% fluent. I have always thought that it is best not to take too much credit for reducing crime because you never know what is around the corner and any blame for an increase will find a home at your door; treat the peaks and troughs with the same degree of suspicion. So, all I will do is give you a few figures and let you make your own mind up about whether we are doing a good job for you or not. Crime is down 22% Tim Waterhouse from 1st April 2012 Cheltenham South LPT. Inspector compared to last years period which means we have had 750 less victims in the first 8 months of this year. We are detecting 36% of all crimes, which means that for most offences where we have some clues we do a pretty good job of getting some kind of justice, whatever that looks like. The problem always comes with the reported offences where we don’t have clues, such as the insecure car entered at three in the morning with its satnav stolen. They call it acquisitive crime, and this is why I keep banging on about locking your property. You would be amazed at how much time these thieves spend wandering around in the middle of the night looking for an opportunity; we know as we watch them occasionally and their chaotic meanderings. This is why we have spent so much time on targeting the individuals themselves as this seems to be more effective than just chasing the offence and trying to detect it after the event; being proactive and less reactive. It is working at the moment, but we do know that it only takes the release of 2 or 3 key individuals from prison for an increase in crime. We will have a new Police and Crime Commissioner in place by the time you read this. Fingers crossed that they will have the same view as myself that neighbourhood policing in all its many guises is something we should keep and nurture as it clearly works if staffed by people who care and want to make a difference. Your team at Cheltenham South do care and do try to make a positive difference to your lives. Hopefully this years crime figures reflect on that in a good way. Keep them doors locked and keep safe.
