Introduction
Hey there! I’m Forrest the fox. I’m the new Kentucky State Park Foundation mascot. Not only are foxes a trendy animal, but I will also give children and adults a face to go along with the Kentucky State Park Foundation Education Sector.

I care a lot about education. Learning as much as possible about the environment is vital in order to become a resonsible citizen of planet Earth. I’m here to help. This booklet offers ideas. To spark a curriculum, if you willl. Curriculum requires organization, and that is why I compiled a list of ideas for you in this booklet! (You’re welcome.) There are several different ways you can run with this, but I only have one objective here. I want children to leave here excited about Kentucky State Parks with their goody bag. In the goody bag, there will be a voucher. The parents will inspect the goody bag (as all good parents should do) see the voucher, then donate money to the Kentucky State Park Foundation. With their help, children will always have a safe haven with the Kentucky State Parks— a place they will grow to love, and have memories for years to come. So please. Become aquainted with this book. I live in these parks. I don’t want to lose my home!

Lesson Plan Lesson Objectives: Students will learn to respect state parks more, as well as learn what wildlife is common in Kentucky. Materials: KSPF coloring book, crayons, 1. Students will be welcomed in a conference room or awning (at non-resort parks) at the park they will be visiting. They will receive a 16 page coloring activity book, which will contain a scavenger hunt, coloring pages, and a page with a perforated Junior Park Ranger pledge page with a perforated badge 2. Volunteer from the parks will explain to children the importance of maintaining parks, keeping them clean, and how important the Kentucky State Park Foundation is to all of the parks in Kentucky (by raising money to fix things, create exhibits so people can learn about Kentucky’s history, etc.) 3. Instructors or volunteers will hand out coloring book to children 4. Volunteer will describe the book in its entirety to the children, including identifying some of the animals and plants in the book. They will explain that they may possibly see some of these on their hike. They will not explain the final page, and tell the children they must finish the hike before they can advance to this section. 5. Volunteer will lead children on an easy nature hike where they will use their coloring books to identify wildlife they see on their way. The hike should be no longer than a mile. Volunteer and instructor will throw out the words “scavenger hunt to give children a vibe of friendly competition, but cheating is not acceptable. The children will circle what wildlife they see. 6. Older students either break for lunch and continue, or the younger ones return to the conference room or where they started 7. Volunteers explain the importance of the pledge page, and have a community box of crayons they can use to decorate the badge/ other pages in the book. 8. Volunteers thank the children for coming and hand out the goody bag, and tell the children they should put their coloring books in the bag.

I, ________ promise to stay true to Kentucky State Parks. I promise to take care of wildlife by not littering, even at home. I will respect animals and the habitats they live in. I will encourage others to play outside, and I will spend less time on electronics and more time in the fresh air. I promise to share my experiences today with my family and friends, and to be a true Junior Fox Ranger.
