Do you want a yard full of flowers in April? Consider planting bulbs soon that will pop up next spring. It’s an easy process that relies on finding bulbs that will suit maintenance preferences and ease-of-use. Bulbs should be planted around October. Don’t have the time to dig up the bulbs every year to make sure they’re stored away for the next year? Stay away from tulips, and make sure to buy daffodils, crocuses or alliums. Any of these varieties can be left in the ground with the promise of new blooms every year. “I like putting bulbs in unexpected places,” says Lisa Yunker, owner of City Roots, an urban garden shop located in Over-the-Rhine. “It’s something fun that I get to do when I work in people’s yards. In the spring, they just pop up and it’s a nice surprise.” Yunker offered up a few tips for potential perennial planters. 1. Find an area around a tree trunk or a part of the yard that needs a little beautifying. According to Yunker, a garden bed isn’t the best spot because bulbs only bloom once a year, and that spot will be bare for the rest of the year. If maintenance isn’t an issue, then a garden bed can

Planting bulbs does not require many supplies. These are all available at City Roots in Over-the-Rhine. work because the bulbs can be dug up to make room for other flowers. 2. Use a bulb planter or a digging tool to make a hole that will allow the top of the bulb to be one inch deep. 3. Mix the loosened soil with a small handful of high-phosphorus fertilizer. Organic bat guano or bone meal works best. 4. Place the bulb in the hole, making sure the pointy end is on top (some bulbs look like miniature onions and are from the onion family). This is important.
If you’re unsure which end is up, check the Internet or ask a garden shop employee. We used alliums, and it was easy to tell. 5. Cover the bulb with the loosened fertilized soil. 6. Deer and raccoons can be an issue in a yard planted with bulbs. Cover the ground with a plastic chicken-wire mesh, and it will serve as a deterrent. These animals hate the idea of getting tangled more than they like the idea of eating your bulbs. Human hair scattered around the newly planted site can work too.
