MHA CLASS PRACTICES SERVANT LEADERSHIP

DR. CAROLINE HOHENSEE (CENTER FRONT) AND MHA 710 CLASS On October 9th, Dr. Caroline Hohensee and her MHA 710 class teamed up with Presbyterian Hospital to lead a community volunteer project at a Crisis Ministry. Crisis Ministry is a non-­‐profit organiza,on in CharloIe commiIed to providing assistance and advocacy for people in financial crisis, helping them to move toward self-­‐sufficiency. The class received, sorted, and hung donated items for the store. Upon arriving, the clothing racks were empty. When the class was finished, the racks were full and ready for the approximately 150 individuals who come daily to "shop" for free for necessary clothing and home items. Thank you, Dr. Hohensee and the Pfeiffer MHA servant leaders for volunteering at Crisis Assistance Ministry in an ongoing effort to help our community, one person at a ,me.

FROM THE DEAN’S DESK I am ohen asked about job opportuni,es for students. While most Pfeiffer health students are gainfully employed in health-­‐related jobs, our academic programs are increasingly aIrac,ng workers who are entering the field for the first ,me. They are interested in either changing careers or taking advantage of the an,cipated job growth in the healthcare industry over the next 10 years. Regardless of mo,va,on, students can benefit from the health-­‐related programs Pfeiffer offers. In the first instance, I would recommend that persons who are interested in changing careers consider our health cer,ficate program in Long-­‐term Care or Prac,ce Management that are offered through the Center for Professional Advancement. Anyone who has an associate degree can obtain a cer,ficate in one year that would qualify them for placement in a variety of mid-­‐level clinical sejngs. Credits accrued in the cer,ficate programs can be applied toward the full Bachelor’s degree. This strategy will also work for students who have a Bachelor’s degree in Business or other non-­‐health related disciplines. For students who are employed, and would like to advance their current careers, I suggest using the internship or prac,cum experience. This would allow you to explore work environments capable of providing new and different job skills designed to increase your value to the market. For example, this spring, the Department of Health Administra,on will offer MHA795, Applied Research. This class can be subs,tuted for the MHA 790 Prac,cum in Health Administra,on. Dr. Sanggon Nam will teach the course during which students will par,cipate in a research project with a major medical group. This is a great opportunity for serious students to learn research design skills. The course will prepare students to adapt basic research findings and applied research theory to specific situa,ons. The knowledge gained in this course will be very aIrac,ve to major employers. Any student considering pursuing further graduate educa,on, for example, at the doctoral level, should certainly take advantage of this new course offering. I can’t stress enough the importance of establishing good rapport and consistent working rela,onships with your advisors so that they get to know you and your career goals. Develop posi,ve rela,onships with the faculty in your department, and seek opportuni,es to network with your classmates. They are an excellent source for job leads. I will con,nue to publish all known job opportuni,es in Clipboard Notes for internships, networking events, educa,onal programs at other universi,es and academic compe,,ons that can all lead to future employment opportuni,es. Par,cipate in professional student organiza,ons, and remember that Pfeiffer students can use the College Central Network Job Line at no cost. . PFEIFFER GRADUATE STUDENT ACCEPTS POSITION IN QATAR

Valerie David is a Clinical Supervisor of Respiratory Care Services at the Cone Health System in Greensboro, North Carolina. She is a leader with demonstrated exper,se in the areas of clinical management, leadership training and development, performance improvement, and strategic planning. Valerie has over 25 years of experience and success as a leader and manager of clinical services including acute care, ambulatory care, and home health. She led numerous performance improvement and quality improvement ini,a,ves as well as mul,disciplinary teams to achieve performance improvement in clinical outcomes, staff and pa,ent sa,sfac,on. Valerie has a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She is an ac,ve member of the American Associa,on of Respiratory Care, the North Carolina Respiratory Care Society, and is a Na,onal Asthma Educator.

Valerie’s love, passion, and dedica,on to excellence led her to further her educa,on in Health Care Administra,on at Pfeiffer University in CharloIe, North Carolina. She is in her last year of the MHA program and will graduate in August 2013. In October, Valerie will begin an exci,ng job as Project Leader for the de-­‐ velopment and implementa,on of a 450 bed Women’s Hospital in Doha, Qatar. The hospital is part of the Hamad Medical Corpora,on and will open next spring. She has signed a two-­‐year contract and is looking for-­‐ ward to a fabulous opportunity to learn and grow in health care man-­‐ agement.

Dr. Dianne Daniels, Dr. Miller and Michael Vaccaro, RN, BSN, MHA/MBA aIended the North Carolina Nurses Associa,on Awards Luncheon Celebra,on held in Concord on October 3, 2012. Dr. Daniels graduated from the first NCNA Leadership Academy Class of 2012 and Michael, a graduate of Pfeiffer’s MHA/MBA program, was recognized as the 2012 Nurse of the Year in the area of Administra,on. Daniels and Vaccaro are excellent Pfeiffer nurse leaders, and we are excited about their accomplishments.

Pfeiffer’s Department of Health Administra,on prepares servant leaders to help shape the future of healthcare locally, na,onally and globally. Valerie is a great success story and we wish her well.

NEWS FROM THE NURSING DEPARTMENT The Nursing Department dedicated its new suite of offices and labs in the Harris Building during Pfeiffer’s Homecoming weekend. President Mike Miller gave remarks, and visitors were treated to a tour of the new facili,es. The Department was also recognized this month as a Hallmark Workplace. The NC Nurses Associa,on Hallmarks of Healthy Workplaces recogni,on program was created to recognize workplaces with posi,ve environments for nurses in North Carolina. We are proud of this NCNA seal of approval.

The Junior Nursing Class of 2014 held its White Coat Ceremony on October 5, 2012 in the Stokes Community Room. The White Coat Ceremony signifies the beginning of the student’s journey into professionalism as they enter clinical studies. Dr. Miller offered words of encouragement. “You have come a long way since your arrival at Pfeiffer and you should be very proud of your accomplishments. From this day forward you will be recognized as a valued member of the health professions. Your clothing will become an outward symbol of the clinical training you have received and the service you are now entrusted to render to your future pa,ents.” Family and friends joined in the rite of passage celebra,on which began last year with the Class of 2013. The ceremony was ini,ated by Dr. Mark McCallum, Interim Dean for Arts and Science. He aIended again this year to lend his con,nued support for the program. DR. JOEL VICKERS HONORED AS PFEIFFER GEM The Grandover Resort was the regal sejng for the first Pfeiffer Gems event. Professor Joel Vickers, re,red Coach Joe Ferebee, and the late Assistant Professor Ray Harrington were all honored for their extraordinary contribu,ons over the course of extended careers with the University. Vernease Miller was given the privilege of introducing Dr. Vickers. In her remarks, she noted that Dr. Vickers is a true ‘gem’ because of his insight and vision; leader-­‐ ship; energy; warm and invi,ng spirit; and his passion for people. She also complimented and thanked Mrs. JeanneIe Vickers for her quiet behind-­‐the-­‐scenes presence. Mrs. Vickers has been a tremendous support to faculty and students, and is affec,onately referred to as the department “den mother”. Dr. Vickers received a plaque from the University and a framed photograph of himself in academic regalia from the Department. Some students and faculty were not able to aIend the event in Greensboro. The Department will host another luncheon on the CharloIe campus in the spring for those who would s,ll like to personally thank Dr. Vickers for his 17 years of dedicated service.

SPOTLIGHT ON HEALTH AND EXERCISE SCIENCE Exci,ng things are taking place in the Department of Health and Exercise Science. First, the Department’s name was changed at the last Faculty Assembly mee,ng from Exercise Science to Health and Exercise Science. The major is now part of the Division of Health-­‐ Related Programs and Programs; including 'health' in the name will beIer reflect the emphasis on preven,on, health and wellness pro-­‐ gramming that is already part of the major’s curriculum. Secondly, Dr. Blake Jus,ce, Assistant Professor, is in his second year at Pfeiffer. He recently had a book chapter published in Weight Management by Gaskill, P., Mohr, D.J., & Townsend. Dr. Jus,ce is very passionate about preparing students for careers in fitness and health promo,on.

VINSON SUTLIVE, III, Ph.D. AND BLAKE JUSTICE, Ph.D.

Dr. Vinson Sutlive is in his 12th year of service to Pfeiffer. He is a full Professor who is highly respected by his colleagues as an academic leader and expert in the scien,fic study of the structure and func,on of the human body. He has been granted sabba,cal leave for the spring 2013 semester to conduct a major research study on “Anasto-­‐ mosis: Three Unique Partnerships that Helped Shape the Course of Modern Medicine”. The informa,on obtained from this research will be used to inform his teaching and and enhance the mentoring of students when he returns to the classroom. The Exercise Science curriculum is science-­‐based and requires all students to take general and upper level laboratory science courses, including biology, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, as well as a exercise physiology, kinesiology/biomechanics, exercise tes,ng and prescrip,on. An important component of the major is that all students engage in some type of undergraduate research project. Students are responsible for the design, data collec,on, and analysis of the research project. In addi,on, all majors complete a field experience at an off-­‐campus facility. Upon gradua,on student will work or do graduate study in the areas of: • Exercise Science • Health Promo,on • Nutri,on/Wellness • Community Health and Fitness • Physical Therapy • Science Educa,on • Sports Medicine • Cardiac Rehabilita,on • Nursing The Department is working on two projects that will offer Exercise Science students increased exposure and professional opportuni,es. A major revision of the Fitness Leadership concentra,on has been submiIed to the Curriculum Board for considera,on that will increase field experience and opportuni,es for students to gain professional cer,fica,on as cer,fied personal trainers. Jus,ce and Sutlive have also been working on a nutri,on and physical ac,vity program for United Methodist clergy. Look for more on both of these developments in the next Clipboard Notes.
