Sabba4cal leave is a faculty benefit available to professors who have served the University for a significant period of 4me. The root word of sabba4cal is Sabbath." It means to rest and worship. Sabba4cal leave is a 4me given for a change from rou4ne du4es. It provides opportunity for the recipient to reflect, re-­‐visit and renew one’s strength and energy for con4nued service.

DR. VINSON SUTLIVE RECEIVES SABBATICAL LEAVE

Dr. Vinson Sutlive has been granted sabba4cal leave for the spring 2013 semester. The 4tle of his research project is Anastomosis: Three Unique Partnerships that Helped Shape the Course of Modern Medicine. Dr. Sutlive plans to visit archives at the Schools of Medicine at Vanderbilt, Johns Hopkins, and Duke Universi4es, as well as the University of Minnesota. He is also planning to visit South Africa to gather addi4onal informa4on if funding can be arranged. Dr. Vernease Miller, Interim Dean for Health Related Programs, says that she is “excited about Dr. Sutlive’s opportunity to travel and ac4vely engage in research that will add to the body of knowledge in the field of Health & Exercise Science. Pfeiffer students and faculty will certainly benefit from Dr. Sutlive’s research and we will look forward to receiving his full report to the faculty in February 2014. We wish him well.”

In the spring, Clipboard Notes will con4nue to honor students and alumni who are realizing great rewards following comple4on of their undergraduate and graduate degree programs. DR. DONNA SHALALA, PRESIDENT, UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI

NURSING FACULTY ATTEND SHALALA LECTURE

Pfeiffer’s Nursing Department faculty aYended a lecture presented by UNC Chapel Hill's 2012-­‐2013 Ethnic Minority VisiIng Scholar, Dr. Donna Shalala, President of the University Miami and Chair of the InsItute of Medicine Report on the Future of Nursing. Her presentaIon, "PracIcing to the Full Extent of One's EducaIon: ImplicaIons for Providers, Diversity & the People of North Carolina" was informaIve and Imely as our state and naIon prepare to meet workforce demands associated with health care reform. Dr. Dianne Daniels, Chair and Associate Professor of Nursing said, “Dr. Shalala was very inspiring and it made me very proud to be a part of a profession that will be helping to lead healthcare iniIaIves.” Dr. Shalala served for eight years as Secretary of Health and Human Services in the Clinton AdministraIon.

INTERNSHIP LEADS TO EXECUTIVE POSITION During his internship at United Hospital Center (UHC) in Bridgeport, WV, Mike Maddix worked directly with Bruce Carter, President and CEO of the hospital on several major projects including feasibility studies for opening bariatric, vein and surgery clinics. Mike also had the opportunity to work in the public relaIons department of the hospital. He was given the opportunity to write press releases, as well as publish arIcles in local newspapers, and prepare internal 'white papers.' He also coordinated live interview segments with local television staIons, while planning a series of hospital-­‐sponsored events. These experiences gave Mike the chance to see, on a first hand basis, the mulIple dimensions of hospital administraIon. As a result of this organizaIon-­‐ wide exposure, and his successful performance across these many arenas, Mike was offered, and accepted, the posiIon of Assistant Administrator/Project Manager at UHC.

BRUCE CARTER, PRESIDENT AND CEO OF UNITED HOSPITAL CENTER AND MAKE MADDIX, PFEIFFER MHA STUDENT AND UHC INTERN United Hospital Center is located in the heart of north central West Virginia, in Bridgeport. It is a private, 292 room, not-­‐for-­‐ profit, acute care facility. It also has 24 observaIon rooms and a medical staff consisIng of more than 200 primary care and specialty physicians. We wish Mike success in his new posiIon.

4TH ANNUAL DELTA KAPPA RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM By Dr. Pearl Wong, Assistant Professor, Marriage & Family Therapy Program On Thursday, November 29, 2012, the Rose Jay Dining Room on the CharloDe campus came alive with Delta Kappa’s 4th Annual Research Symposium. Students from Dr. Pearl Wong’s Research Methods class in the Marriage and Family Therapy Program showcased their invigora4ng research findings for their fellow students, faculty, staff, community service providers, friends, family, and a special panel of judges through posters and crea4ve handouts.

Early in the semester, students created research ques4ons and embarked on their own literature review to highlight their areas of professional interest. The Research Symposium showcased their review of literature and knowledge of the findings. Each student explained their research to visitors, and answered ques4ons.

Dr. Jim Leist and fifty graduate students will travel to London in January during the semester break as part of the Comparative International Health course. They will visit the Medical Society of London, St. Thomas Hospital, and the Florence Nightingale Museum. They will also receive lecture presentations from leading providers of integrated health and social care services. Safe travels!

UPCOMING INTERNATIONAL TRIP MEETINGS

The Liberia trip meeting will be held on January 26, 2013 in the Rattstube Conference Room on the Charlotte Campus, 10:00 – 2:00pm. All students registered for the Liberia trip must attend. Dr. Vernease Miller is the trip leader. Please bring passports with you. The Canada trip meeting will be held on February 2, 2013 on the Charlotte campus. Dr. Carol Vogt is the trip leader. She will send additional information directly to students registered for that class.
