Sites dedicated specifically to Pfeiffer’s Misenheimer, Charlotte and RTP campuses allow users to choose the site they are most likely to visit based on their individual needs.

“A university’s website is far and away the tool most used by prospective students as they make decisions about higher education,” said Michael Poll, vice president of marketing and enrollment. “The ability to tell Pfeiffer’s story in a way that resonates with today’s students is essential to the university’s continued success for all its programs.”

Dear Alumni and Friends: It’s certainly true that time flies when you’re having fun. Over the past year since I became president of Pfeiffer University, it’s been thrilling to witness Pfeiffer’s progress.

Our campuses have new life. In Misenheimer, the recently announced ICARE program (page 4) and gifts from other sources are making possible such campus improvements as new signage throughout campus, sidewalk and window replacements, and refreshing paint for a number of campus buildings, including the Merner Gymnasium. In addition, our Charlotte campus has updated its classroom configuration and is gearing up for a much-needed HVAC system replacement. Updates such as these provide not only a facelift to our facilities but an uplifting of spirits for students, faculty and staff who live and work here.

Academically, Pfeiffer continues to deliver a proven product for undergraduate students in Misenheimer and our Adult Studies population in Charlotte as well as for graduate students on both our Charlotte and Research Triangle campuses. In Misenheimer, our first class of Nursing students is entering the clinical portion of its education and training, after completing preliminary experience in Pfeiffer’s new simulation lab (page 14). Our master’s degree program in Marriage and Family Therapy expanded this fall from Charlotte to RTP, exceeding its

enrollment goals on both campuses (page 17), while our Master’s in Health Administration program, including its hospital-based cohort groups, continues to expand its influence and scholarship in this needed field.

The successes in these programs and others are leading us through the reaccreditation process of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS), the regional body for the accreditation of degree-granting higher education institutions in the Southern states. This year-long process, which has been coordinated expertly by staff and faculty throughout the entire institution, will culminate later this winter in a site visit by SACS officials that will help determine Pfeiffer’s areas of strength and help inform our work for the future to improve the quality and rigor of Pfeiffer’s curriculum.

An important area of administrative growth for Pfeiffer is our ongoing relationship with the United Methodist Church. We are searching actively for an ordained and experienced professional to lead the newly established Office of Church Relations, a role that will encompass recruitment of students from UMC congregations, building relationships with friends of Methodism that ultimately lead to support for Pfeiffer, and serving as associate pastor to The Village Church. In short, the person who fills this position will have a vital role in the life of Pfeiffer University as well as our history and future as a model UMC churchrelated institution.

The latter part of 2011 has brought a change in board of trustee leadership. We welcome Dave McIlquham to the chairman’s position after three years as a trustee (and five months in 2010 as interim president). Not only does he know Pfeiffer well but he is singularly committed to the institution’s growth and success. At the same time, we extend thanks and gratitude to Greg Hunter for his service to Pfeiffer, which spanned nine years, including four as chairman.

Finally, this issue of Pfeiffer’s alumni magazine includes the 2010-2011 annual honor roll of donors, the generous contributors for whom the entire University is grateful this year. Without your commitment, faith and support, this institution could not thrive.

The Silent Auction, sponsored by the Alumni Association, featured dozens of donated items that brought in more than $14,000 to apply to the purchase of outdoor furniture for the patio outside Pfeiffer’s cafeteria.

Homecoming 2011: Return to Sender in Misenheimer Take a look at just some of the events that made Homecoming 2011 memorable

he rain during Homecoming weekend, Sept. 23-25, could not dampen the spirits of Pfeiffer University alumni, friends and students through class reunions, Alumni Association Silent Auction, 5K race, and Elvis-themed activities that brought several hundred people to Pfeiffer’s Misenheimer campus.

“Rain or shine, Homecoming is Pfeiffer’s premier alumni and community event of the year,” said Pixie Klein Gentle ’83, president, Alumni Board. “A chance to remember why Pfeiffer is special is what drives so many people back to Misenheimer year after year.”

On Saturday morning, Alumni Association President Pixie Klein Gentle ’83 presented awards to deserving friends and alumni.

Notable Alumni Awarded

Alumni inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame at Homecoming included the 1961 men’s soccer team; Candace Phifer ‘00, women’s basketball and cross country; and Jim Fritz, coach for men’s lacrosse 1990-2002 and women’s cross country 1991-94. With them are Mary Ann Sunbury, athletic director, and Jack Ingram, sports management.

The class of 1966 gathered on Friday for a mixer and Saturday for dinner. Among them were Adele Roach Colston, Mary Ann Campbell Magee, Jeannie Alfano Moretto and Diane Harmon Lamont.

The 2011 Outstanding Alumni Award was presented to Harold “Mackie” ’63 and Mary Earnhardt (’64) Eagle for their generous and longtime support of various Pfeiffer University programs and projects. The Eagles, who are retired (Mr. Eagle is a former state revenue officer and trainer and Mrs. Eagle is a former middle school teacher), are avid Falcons basketball fans and enthusiastic Falcon Club members. In fact, one of the two endowed scholarships they have established at Pfeiffer is for men’s basketball; the other is academic.

Greensboro residents, the Eagles are members of Guilford College United Methodist Church.

Kevin DeSanctis ’74, who is chairman and chief executive officer of the Atlantic City, DeSanctis N.J.-based Revel Entertainment Group, LLP, received the 2011 Distinguished Alumni Award. The Trenton native and former Accounting major who lives in Wyomissing, Penn., started his career with the New Jersey State Police.

Since that time, Mr. DeSanctis has served in leadership roles with several New Jersey hotel and casino corporations.

Paul E. Clark, who was appointed associate vice president for Advancement on Sept. 1, was named an honorary alumnus during the Alumni Awards ceremony.

Mr. Clark joined Pfeiffer in 2007, originally as director of annual giving and alumni relations, until becoming director of development in 2010. He accepted the award from Alumni Association President Pixie Klein Gentle ’83 and was congratulated by his wife, Terri, and President Mike Miller.

A Chance to Show How Much You Care About Pfeiffer ICARE: Curb Appeal Restoration and Enhancement Campaign

A

new giving opportunity is available for alumni, parents and friends of Pfeiffer University to make an immediate impact on the institution based on their specific and individual interests. The ICARE (Curb Appeal Restoration and Enhancement) campaign, proposed initially by Trustee Dave McIlquham, offers the chance to support a wide range of “pet projects” at Pfeiffer, from large capital projects such as painting and sidewalk replacement to smaller classroom and office improvements.

Donors who make possible the completion of designated ICARE projects will be acknowledged if they wish on Pfeiffer’s website and in the 2012 Honor Roll of Donors. Naming opportunities will be decided on a project-by-project basis. Work on individual ICARE projects will begin when funding for an entire project has been received. class recently were given a chance to share their opinions about ways to fix—or at least boost—the struggling U.S. economy. Their thoughts, which range from decrease spending to tax the rich and everything between, reflect the current debate among the general population.

“I knew the students, many whose families are experiencing unemployment and other challenges related to the current economy, would have a lot to say about the situation,” said Professor Pickler, self-employed farmer who has taught economics at Pfeiffer for 50 years. “Through this experience, they are learning valuable life lessons that will remain with them throughout their lives.”

Students’ thoughts include the following: “Consumer spending is a great way to pump more money into the economy…but since it’s hard to boost spending in a down economy we need to get consumers from other countries to do the spending for us, basically import consumers from cash-rich countries to come and spend money here. Experts say the effect could be up to 1.3 million new jobs and $860 billion into the economy over the next decade.” — Michael Blair “I think government officials could start taking a few days out of the year off without pay…If they take maybe just four or five days off without pay then the government would save quite a bit of money. It seems like middle class workers are taking pay cuts and having their hours cut, so why can’t Congress do the same?” — Amber Cottrell “The most immediate ways the country can help solve some of the issues is by…increasing spending on infrastructure, reduce military spending and raise taxes. By investing in infrastructure, government not only puts people back to work but also creates opportunities for companies to invest in equipment needed to build things.” — Ian Levine “We should increase taxes on things that are unhealthy for our bodies…tobacco products, alcohol, sugar-loaded food and soda…Everyone has to feed their habits so people will continue to purchase taxed items even with the tax increase.”

— Jodie Lemons “The government needs to decrease spending. By doing so the government would require fewer taxes now and in the future. Lower taxes encourage work, saving and investments.

Lower spending overall is a benefit even if taxes are not lowered. Less government spending would encourage investment and growth in areas of the economy that need to be more solid to create a balanced scenario.” — Luis Villalta

Betting on Student Success First-Year Experience Eases Transition to College Life and Promotes Academic and Life Success

S

ince fall 2009, the First-Year Experience has helped incoming students transition successfully to all aspects of college life, a factor that often determines a student’s willingness and ability to persist with higher education through graduation. During the year, students participate in a series of activities in addition to their academic courses designed to engage them in and connect them to life at Pfeiffer. A recent grant from The Charles A. Cannon Charitable Trusts (see adjacent story) will support this program by providing related and ongoing training for mentors and advisors from Pfeiffer’s faculty and staff so they are prepared to support students through the experience.

“Because a successful transition to college life is a major contributor to overall college success, it’s vital to integrate these activities from the start of a student’s college experience,” said Deborah Burris, chair of

Pfeiffer’s Communications Department and director of the First-Year Experience program. “Support from The Charles A. Cannon Charitable Trusts allows us to enhance our ability to meet the needs of young people as we create a ‘culture of coaching’ through these services.”

Early support for the notion of student-centered mentoring at Pfeiffer can be found in Trustee Rob Knapp’s 2009 Convocation speech. He challenged the audience to imagine a culture of servant leadership, an environment where students are assigned a professor or coach mentor who would guide them through their four years at Pfeiffer, meet with them regularly and help them develop their talents.

“Everyone involved would be putting others before self,” he said. “How many schools can say that? None.

The result would be higher standards and higher achievement.”

Components of the First Year-Experience include: • Pfeiffer Journey, a yearlong course, focuses in the fall on subjects

This effort was supported by a grant from the North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU). In the first round of Keys to Success, 25 students participated on a first-come, first-served basis; plans for future sessions include the ability to accommodate more students.

• During 2011-2012, all freshmen will read the novel Blood Done Sign My Name by Timothy B. Tyson and participate in a series of discussions and cultural activities that spark critical thinking and in-depth discussion about the book and the human condition.

Pfeiffer University Receives $197,000 Grant from The Charles A. Cannon Charitable Trusts to Help Meet the Needs of First-Year Students Pfeiffer University has received a $197,000 grant from The Charles A. Cannon Charitable Trusts to improve the effectiveness of its First-Year Experience program for incoming students.

Currently, freshmen at Pfeiffer participate in a series of activities, including a course called The Pfeiffer Journey, designed to ease the transition to college life and accelerated academic expectations. The grant will provide additional support to deepen those services, providing tools and training for staff and faculty so they can determine more precisely each student’s level of preparedness for college life and coach them according to their specific needs. This customization of services, as indicated by both measurable and anecdotal research, increases the likelihood that students will persist with their education through graduation.

“Because students enter college with differing degrees of maturity or ‘emotional intelligence,’ a one-size-fits-all model isn’t necessarily most effective for addressing their needs,”

said Deborah Burris, professor of Communications and director of the First-Year Experience program. “Coaching students in a personalized way is much like executive business coaching in the professional world; it increases success not only for those less prepared or less emotionally mature but also helps a more emotionally mature student make the most of available opportunities, resulting in a more satisfying and valuable collegiate experience for all students.”

Assuring that students are prepared to persist through graduation is a priority for colleges and universities as an increasingly global and technological job market demands highly educated workers. According to a March 2011 study by the Stanford University Department of Education, customized coaching, in addition to leading to increased retention rates, has a greater impact than financial aid on motivating students to stay the course.

Presidential Perspective Mike Miller Reflects on His First Year in the President’s Office Mike Miller became Pfeiffer University’s ninth president in December 2010. After a career primarily in banking, Mike, an Asheboro resident, is leading Pfeiffer toward educational success for the 21st century. Here he reflects on the past 12 months, shares what he’s learned and continues to learn, and discusses what it will take for Pfeiffer to achieve new heights in a competitive higher education environment.

What about Pfeiffer led you to become its president?

My chief interaction over the years with Pfeiffer University had been through graduates I encountered in the business world or who had been employed by my church. It was an alumnus who first informed me of Pfeiffer’s search for a new president and suggested—and later insisted—that I throw my hat into the ring.

When I learned more about the opportunities and challenges, particularly that I would have the chance to make a difference at an institution with such a rich history and heartfelt support, it proved to be a call I could not resist.

A year into your presidency, what are your impressions relative to what you expected?

I learn more each day. Never have I been part of a school that has engendered feelings or created life-changing experiences that alumni and others describe in such sincere, warmhearted detail.

At the same time, because the world moves at such a fast pace and higher education is extremely competitive, academic and co-curricular programs must continue to be strengthened for both undergraduate and graduate students if Pfeiffer is to continue changing lives. It’s also clear to me that dedication of the extended Pfeiffer community is impressive and greater than I could have expected.

From your perspective, what are Pfeiffer’s greatest strengths?

Pfeiffer provides terrific individual attention to students at all levels.

I’ve witnessed remarkable interaction among faculty, staff, coaches and students. I’ve been very impressed with the Pfeiffer alumni board’s dedication and the interest that members demonstrate toward our students. Academically, Pfeiffer offers a number of graduate and undergraduate programs that meet the needs and demands of the world today and in the future.

Where lies its greatest potential?

Pfeiffer possesses an exceptional capacity to provide value-added educational experiences that prepare students for productive,

satisfying careers and active citizenship and service to their communities. To accomplish this, Pfeiffer must be strategic in recruiting the right students, thoughtful about enhancing its mentoring programs, and serious about increasing the scholarship activities of faculty as well as research and internship opportunities for students.

What are your short-term and long-term goals for the University?

This winter, Pfeiffer will complete the reaffirmation of its accreditation, and over the coming months continue “freshening up” and reinvigorating the Misenheimer campus. We have also begun a comprehensive, institutionwide strategic planning process that will provide a detailed roadmap leading to the achievement of long-term goals and objectives. This will not only inform the work and direction of all academic and administrative departments but also outline the ways the board of trustees and alumni board can support the institution in achieving its goals. Overall, my aspiration for Pfeiffer is to build its academic reputation so it becomes an “in-demand” university—for all its campuses and online.

How will you know you’ve succeeded?

While partial success is enjoyed with each graduating class or cohort, realistically, no longstanding, high-quality institution is ever finished developing state-of-the-art programs, growing topnotch graduates or providing outstanding service to the community, state and nation. Success will lie in Pfeiffer’s ability to consistently provide relevant academic programs and build and sustain enrollment while remaining true to its mission.

Nick Haigler is working as a service and outreach coordinator at the L’viv United Methodist church, which serves a large downtown population of young people in L’viv, Ukraine; Joy Prim is serving with the Mission for Migrant Workers, an organization dedicated to helping migrants in crisis in Hong Kong; and Alex Devoid is a facilitator for communications and visiting mission volunteers at Acción Médica Cristiana in Nicaragua, which provides pro bono services to people in impoverished communities. Annual Convocation Ceremony Opens Academic Year

Pfeiffer University Adopts 100 Percent Tobacco-Free Policy

Pfeiffer University opened the academic year on Sept. 9, welcoming Colonel Arthur J. Athens, director of the Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership at the U.S. Naval Academy, as keynote speaker for the 2011 Academic Convocation.

Col. Athens, whose daughter, Katherine, is a Pfeiffer sophomore and a member of the women’s lacrosse team, retired in 2008 from the U.S. Marine Corps after more than 30 years of combined active duty and reserve service. As a Marine Officer, he commanded units in the 3rd and 4th Marine Aircraft Wings, served with the U.S. Space Command and instructed at Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron 1, the Marine Corps’ equivalent of the Navy’s Top Gun School. Additionally, he was a White House Fellow under President Ronald Reagan; special assistant to the NASA Administrator following the Space Shuttle Challenger accident; executive director of OCF, a worldwide nonprofit organization that helps military personnel integrate their faith and profession; commandant of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, and the U.S. Naval Academy’s first Distinguished Military Professor of Leadership.

Aside from his professional responsibilities, Col. Athens has been a volunteer lacrosse coach at the high school and collegiate levels and has been recognized by the Washington Post as its High School Coach of the Year. He and his wife, Mistina, have 10 children.

“It’s fitting for new students to hear from a leading voice such as Colonel Athens’s as they pledge to maintain high standards of integrity in their higher education pursuits,” said Mike Miller, president, of the tradition new students participate in at the ceremony. “We’re honored to welcome a servant leader of his caliber, as his personal and professional accomplishments reflect the high bar that Pfeiffer sets for collegiate and lifelong performance.”

Beginning Jan.1, 2012, Pfeiffer University will become a healthier place for students, staff and visitors. The Pfeiffer University Board of Trustees recently passed a policy that prohibits tobacco use anywhere on the grounds of Pfeiffer’s campuses. In doing so, Pfeiffer joins more than 30 public and private colleges and universities statewide to pass a tobacco-free policy. North Carolina is a national leader in the number of tobacco-free colleges, with more than one-third of the state’s colleges and universities having adopted the tobacco-free policy.

“Our goal in initiating this policy is to improve the environment at Pfeiffer for everyone – faculty, staff, students and visitors alike,” said Dr. Russ Sharples ’75, vice president for Student Affairs and dean of students. “We all know the inherent dangers of tobacco use and now we, as a community, will be taking a stand to educate and support better health for everyone affiliated with the University.”

The 100 percent tobacco-free policy applies to everyone on campus, including administrators, students, faculty, staff, visitors, vendors and contractors. The policy also prohibits the sale, distribution and/or advertisement of tobacco products on campus.

To support students, faculty and staff members’ efforts to quit smoking, Pfeiffer is promoting cessation resources such as phone-based coaching provided by QuitlineNC, funded by the North Carolina Health and Wellness Trust Fund, which works with colleges and universities across the state to pass and implement health-related policies. This service is available free to all North Carolina residents by calling 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669).

Faculty and Staff Notes Undergraduate Faculty Dr. Dianne Daniels (Nursing) presented a poster at the North Carolina Governor’s Conference on Aging titled “Aging Awareness, Knowledge, and Attitudes in Pre-health Professional College Students,” Oct. 2010.

Dr. Tracy Espy (Provost) has concluded her term as editor for Partnerships: A Journal of Service-Learning and Civic Engagement, publishing between 2008-2011 vol. 2, no. 1 and vol. 2, no. 2. This peer-reviewed journal explores how theories and practices can inform and improve partnerships, connections, and collaborations and recognizes that successful engaged learning depends on effective partnerships among students, faculty, community agencies, administrators, disciplines and others.

Dr. Dane K. Fisher (Biology) is involved in a research collaboration with Garden Genetics, LLC in Bellefonte, Pa., and the Department of Environmental Horticulture at the University of Florida to develop and evaluate lines of tomato for flavor and culinary use, and recently participated in discussion and presentation of research at the Independent Plant Breeders Conference at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pa. Results from more than 12 years of plant breeding research on tomatoes has recently included the release of two new inbred lines of tomato for the local culinary market, the most recent of which is a dark fleshed tomato developed from the germplasm of the Russian plant breeder Tarasenko. He is currently working with three Milton Rose undergraduate fellows in the Steve Dial Greenhouse on the Misenheimer campus to develop molecular markers to use in tomato breeding and to teach techniques in cross pollination.

Sylvia Hoffmire (English) presented “Experiential Revision Practice” at the Associated Writing Programs Conference, Washington, D. C., and published a short story titled “Carrying the Day” in the literary magazine R.KV.R.Y. Laura Y. Lu (Computer Information Systems) has written an article about IT capabilities and organizational agility, based on research she conducted on IT management and IT business value in organizations, which will be published in December in MIS Quarterly.

Dr. Patty Meyers (Religion) published an historical and biographical paper for the Religious Education Association and presented it in November as well as a scholarly article that compares and contrasts the cosmologies of Rudolf Steiner and Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and explores the implications for religious education.

In addition, Dr. Meyers and Dr. David Kirby (Music) composed “The Nature to Serve” for choir, soloist and wind ensemble, which premiered at the 2011 Fall Convocation on the Misenheimer campus, featuring the Pfeiffer Concert Choir and Wind Ensemble with baritone soloist Joe Judge ’87 (Music).

The piece will be published later this year.

Dr. Gerald Neal (Education) presented “The Doorway to Success: Classroom Climate and Management” at the North Carolina Middle School Conference, Greensboro, March 2011.

Dr. Enoch Park (Distance Learning) presented “Campus Tool Kit for Facilitating Adult Student Success” at the fall 2011 North Carolina Adult Education Association (NCAEA) Conference, University of North Carolina Charlotte, which outlined Pfeiffer’s best practice of using tools and resources to support adult students for success in undergraduate and graduate studies. He

presented “Cloud Telephone Assistance for Every Faculty: No PBX Required,” at the Northeast Regional Computing Program (NERCOMP) annual conference, Providence, R.I., March 2011. Dr. Park reported the use of cloud-based telephony services such as Google Voice and Skype as alternatives to analogue telephone service for faculty to use as a course hot-line for student inquiries. Also in March, Dr. Park attended the NASA STEM Educators Annual Workshop, in Charlotte, where he made connections to the North and South Carolina schools and STEM programs for collaboration opportunities with Pfeiffer.

Upon completion of the workshop, Park was certified to check out and handle moon rock specimens from NASA for exhibitions at Pfeiffer and local area schools.

Falcon Club Gliding to New Heights New Directions Include Gatherings at Both Men’s and Women’s Home Basketball Games in 2011-2012

he Falcon Club, long established at Pfeiffer University primarily to support scholarships for student-athletes, is taking on new life under the leadership of Allen Snook, head athletic trainer and assistant athletic director.

For years, Falcon Club members, whose levels of membership range from $25-$2,500, depending on individual, family or corporate status, have enjoyed a variety of benefits during Falcons’ basketball season, including half-time get-togethers at men’s home basketball games (now to include women’s home games as well). Throughout the organization’s history, fees and other contributions from members have been applied

solely to Athletics scholarships. Now, with an expanded organizational structure, its purpose will diversify.

“Given the high percentage of Pfeiffer students who participate in NCAA Division II sports, the historic approach to funding scholarships exclusively has been appropriate,” said Mr. Snook, who joined Pfeiffer in 2002. “At the same time, needs arise frequently that affect the quality of our student-athletes’ experience or our ability to attract and retain high-quality talent to Pfeiffer’s athletic programs. With a proposed adjustment to the guidelines for dispersing contributions, the Falcon Club, hopefully, will gain the ability to address a broader array of Athletics needs.”

Under the auspices of a new Falcon Club board of directors, Athletics staff and coaches as well as the Student Athletic Committee (SAC) would have an opportunity to submit proposals every spring for the funding of Athletics projects related to the upcoming academic year. Upon review of the proposals, the Falcon Club board will determine how funds above and beyond $30,000, an amount that will continue to fund scholarships before any additional money is diverted to other proposed projects, should be allocated.

“Our aim is to find ways to enhance the entire Pfeiffer experience for student-athletes,” continued Mr. Snook, who will complete a doctoral degree in health sciences in March from A.T. Still University. “Being a part of a tradition such as the Falcon Club is a great way for alumni and friends of Pfeiffer University to demonstrate the importance of athletics in the lives of so many of our students.”

Cheerleading Returns to Pfeiffer Basketball for a Second Season Boosting school spirit during basketball season this winter, the 2011-2012 Pfeiffer University cheerleading squad is focused on energizing Falcon fans at all men’s and women’s varsity home games.

Having been absent from Pfeiffer since 2004, the cheerleading squad made its return during the 2010-2011 basketball season. Since tryouts in September, this year’s squad of ten students has practiced three times weekly in the Knapp Health and Fitness Center perfecting a number of new cheers and dances. At games, they are donning new uniforms and gear, thanks in part to the contributions of former Pfeiffer cheerleaders.

“We are blessed to have such a dedicated and enthusiastic group of students on the squad,” said Erica Norris (’04) Burroughs, Pfeiffer development officer and former Falcon cheerleader. “Without the generous backing of our former Falcon cheerleaders, these young men and women would not have the opportunity to carry on this great Pfeiffer tradition.”

She’s Got Game Freshman Rachel McCarthy Brings Her “A Stick” to Pfeiffer What started out as high school science fair project has become big business for Pfeiffer freshman Rachel McCarthy. When she set out as a high school freshman to compare the effectiveness of wood lacrosse sticks to metal ones, she couldn’t know that a passion for her favorite sport would lead the following year to an extension of her original experiment, the International Science and Engineering Fair and the United Technologies Award.

This distinction gave her the confidence to take a next bold step: manufacturing and selling lacrosse sticks based on what she learned and refined through her science projects. During test marketing phases, Rachel gave sticks that she crafted from hickory, ash, bamboo, and purple heart to teammates to try out. The results?

“They were pleased by the bruises on the opposing team’s arms and by the fact that their sticks never broke,” said Rachel.

Working with her father, Rachel continues to make and market custom, handmade lacrosse sticks through their company HIKSTIK (hikstik.com), named for hickory wood, which is based in their hometown of Austin, Texas. Their impressive client list includes Hollywood movie producer Anthony Katagas, some players in the Major Lacrosse League, and a group of lacrosse-playing American soldiers stationed in Iraq as well as dozens of high school and college lacrosse players across the U.S.

Rachel’s secret? Like any successful entrepreneur, she doesn’t reveal much except to say that she is patient, careful, willing to work with the wood, make mistakes and learn from them.

“This experience has taught me a lot about management and how to work with customers,” she said.

While Rachel’s tuition is covered by her athletic scholarship, HIKSTIK profits pay for room and board on Pfeiffer’s Misenheimer campus. Quite an accomplishment for a student-athlete still waiting for her first collegiate lacrosse season to begin.

Leading the Pack: Pfeiffer’s Nursing Program Serves Students and the Region

W

ith an aging population that exceeds statewide trends, Stanly County will need to employ more nurses with bachelor’s degrees over the next several decades to meet anticipated needs. This projection and the fact that most nurses work in the geographic region where they are educated are among contributing factors that led to a decision to launch a bachelor of science in Nursing (BSN) program at Pfeiffer University.

In addition, a 2007 review of BSN programs within a 50-mile radius around Stanly County confirmed that those closest were in Charlotte and Greensboro. With several regional and community medical centers in close proximity to provide clinical training and jobs, a BSN program at Pfeiffer made sense. The program

welcomed its first students in 2009 after a year of preparatory work.

“Clearly, we have a perfect opportunity to serve Stanly County and those surrounding it by helping to increase the number of highly educated nurses in the local workforce,” said Dr. Mark McCallum, professor of Biology and dean of the School of Natural & Health Sciences. “Studies indicate that nurses educated at this level can elevate the quality of care in general.”

Those with a desire to become a registered nurse have three choices for entry into the field. A diploma of nursing, which is often offered through hospitalbased nursing schools, provides a basic entry to the field; an associate degree in nursing (ADN) is typically

“A BSN is required for public health, military, and forensic nursing as well as management on every level,” said Dianne Y. Daniels, Ph.D., M.S.N., R.N., C.N.E., associate professor and chair of Pfeiffer’s Department of Nursing. “Most important, it is required for graduate level study. A master’s degree is often required for teaching and is essential for nursing programs in any community or region to be able to continuously train new BSN candidates.”

Terresa Park ‘13 — With a desire to pursue nursing since 1998 after her mother died from cancer, Terresa Park put her goals on hold due to other life obligations. When the opportunity to study nursing presented itself in 2009 with the launch of Pfeiffer’s BSN program, Terresa jumped at the chance. “The personal attention at Pfeiffer makes me feel like a real part of the program rather than just another student.”

“Physicians and other professional health care providers regularly receive their lab coats in a ceremony but rarely do nurses,” said Dr. Daniels. “It’s fitting that nurses participate in this milestone marker, given their position on the front line of patient care.”

Agreements with area medical institutions such as CMC-Union Regional, Stanly Regional Medical Center, Stanly Manor, Moore Regional Hospital, and Rowan Regional Medical Center give students excellent opportunities for a broad range of supervised clinical experiences.

“Pfeiffer’s first class of nursing majors has entered the clinical portion of their training prepared and confident of their abilities,” said Dr. Daniels. “The faculty are very proud of what they are accomplishing and how they represent Pfeiffer University in the community.”

At the risk of overstating the obvious, Pfeiffer University recognized and seized an opportunity four years ago when it hired Susan Wilkie-McHale LPC, LMFT, AAMFT Approved Supervisor, and LPC Supervisor, to research, write, and launch its master of arts degree in Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) at the Charlotte campus. Not far behind came the Pfeiffer Institute, a community-based therapy and treatment clinic located next to Pfeiffer’s Park Road location that offers confidential counseling services to individuals, families and couples, and the opportunity for students in the program to gain valuable experience in a supervised environment.

With the program’s reputation for academic rigor building, they knew high-quality students in the Research Triangle area would seek and choose the program. In August 2011, the program expanded to Pfeiffer’s Morrisville campus, surprising no one when initial recruitment goals were exceeded.

“Our research indicated that most adult students who attend large four-year universities live nearby or enroll in daytime cohorts,” said Professor Wilkie-McHale, who serves as program director. “With accredited MFT programs at Appalachian State and Eastern Carolina so far away, working adults in the Raleigh area had no practical options for pursuing a degree in this field.”

In both Charlotte and Morrisville, the MFT program is designed to accommodate the academic and everyday needs of its students.

Full-time and part-time options are available; in most cases students graduate in three to four years.

The academic course load is demanding, to meet and sustain the requirements of accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Education (COAMFTE) and the North Carolina MFT licensure. Pfeiffer’s program requires a greater number of course credits than many other programs in addition to a total of 500 minimum clinical face-to-face hours and 100 hours of supervision during a minimum of three consecutive semesters.

High standards apply also to faculty. All full-time and adjunct professors are approved supervisors of the American Association of

Marriage and Family Therapists and licensed marriage and family therapists in North Carolina and, in some cases, other states as well.

Faculty members understand the value of ongoing professional development and engagement.

They encourage MFT students to participate in field-related activities and help provide plenty of opportunities to do so. For example, those who qualify are eligible to become members of Delta Kappa Honor Society which promotes awareness of scholarly research; leadership positions are available in graduate student associations; and an annual retreat, research symposiums and community projects are designed to bring students together to network and exchange ideas.

“The notion of servant leadership, whether it’s serving clients, colleagues or the field, is important for both students and faculty to learn and practice,” said Dr. Pearl Wong, LMFT, AAMFT Approved Supervisor, assistant professor and faculty advisor for Delta Kappa.

With several years of experience required before qualifying for doctoral programs, most Pfeiffer MFT graduates are working for community agencies, schools and hospitals.

he Pfeiffer Institute for Marriage and Family Therapy, 4805 Park Road, Charlotte, is a nonprofit clinic that provides training opportunities for Pfeiffer’s master’s level graduate students and counseling services for individuals, couples and families. It adheres to the rules and regulations of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy Codes of Ethical Principles.

In addition to serving clients on site, interns volunteer with a number of community organizations, including Carolina Medical Center, Presbyterian Hospital, United Family Services, Monarch, Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center, and others.

MFT Program Offers New Opportunities for a Long Island Native

W

hen considering her choices among COAMFTE-accredited master’s degree programs in Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT), Deidre Henggeler, who was accepted to every program that she applied to, chose Pfeiffer University.

“I could have taken an easier path with a program that required 54 credit hours,” she said. “But Pfeiffer’s 66 credit hour requirement indicated to me that there is more to learn.”

After earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., in 2009, Deidre moved home to Long Island, knowing she would pursue a master’s degree in either marriage and family therapy or substance abuse counseling.

Now, with a semester of master’s level study completed and a graduate assistantship with the

Pfeiffer Institute to offset the cost of tuition, Deidre realizes that her choice to come to Pfeiffer and Charlotte was the right one.

“While I can’t yet see patients in the clinic, my work in the clinic offers tremendous opportunity to become familiar with the environment and what it takes for a facility to operate effectively,” she said.

“While I don’t know exactly where life will lead me, I know that I will be licensed to practice in North Carolina, which is just fine with me.”

Fueling the Pipeline New Bachelor’s Degree Completion Program in Human Relations Qualifies Students for MFT and Other Master’s-Level Programs

A new addition to Pfeiffer University’s School of Adult Studies (SAS), the bachelor of arts degree in Human Relations, will allow working adults with an associate of arts, associate of science, or associate of applied science degree to complete undergraduate degree requirements in five semesters and prepare them for master’s level programs in a number of fields, including marriage and family therapy. Students who possess 58-64 transferrable credit hours may also complete their degree in Human Relations in the same timeframe.

Pfeiffer’s first cohort of students in the Human Relations program will begin next spring, taking all their courses as a group whether they are classroom based, online or a hybrid. The class will earn their degrees by spring 2014.

“The Human Relations degree prepares students to work in human service fields such as law, child and family advocacy, substance abuse counseling, gerontology, communication, business and education,” said Patrick Meadors, Ph.D., LMFT, AAMFT Approved Supervisor who serves as the Human Relations program coordinator and is an assistant professor with Pfeiffer’s master of arts in Marriage and Family Therapy program. “After completing their degrees, students will be qualified for a variety of master’s degree programs; our hope, of course, is that many will enroll in Pfeiffer’s MFT program.”

Working in partnership with several area institutions that offer two-year degrees, including Central Piedmont Community College, Gaston Community College, Stanly

Community College and Mitchell Community College, the Human Relations program plans to draw students who have associate’s degrees in social and behavioral sciences, human services and related degrees.

“While the interdisciplinary nature of the program gives students an opportunity to discover where their individual talents and interests lie, the requirement for a large number of human relations-specific credits drives their focus toward becoming prepared professionals who are ready to work and qualified to pursue further education,” said Dr. Meadors.

Dear Friends: When I first arrived in Misenheimer in August 1979, I had no idea that Pfeiffer would continue to bless me in 2011. Back then I never even thought about 2011; it seemed so far away. Today, 1979 doesn’t seem so long ago!

I have been blessed in many ways by Pfeiffer as I’m sure you have been.

I developed deep friendships with classmates, roommates and teammates that endure today.

I continue to learn from wonderful, caring professors who pushed and encouraged me to grow personally and academically. I even met my husband through my extended Pfeiffer Pfamily and he didn’t even attend Pfeiffer; such is the reach of Pfeiffer’s blessings.

And the blessings multiply. I have been truly blessed to get to know my fellow Alumni Association board of directors. A harder-working group that truly loves Pfeiffer cannot be found.

I’m also blessed to get to know Pfeiffer’s current students and I encourage you to find an opportunity to meet the newest generation

of our Pfeiffer Pfamily. They are remarkable; not only are they engaged in campus life but in service to the local and global community. They embody the Pfeiffer spirit that is in all of us.

As Pfeiffer has blessed each of us, we can bless Pfeiffer in return. As with any organization, a lot of work needs to be done. Building maintenance and improvements, grounds maintenance, program enhancement, athletics equipment, and technology advancements are all important. Perhaps you can bless current students by helping to improve our alma mater.

Bill Quick ‘52 was named pastor emeritus of Gibson United Methodist Church, Laurinburg, N.C., in June, in recognition of his efforts to re-open the parish, which had been closed by the North Carolina Conference in 2009. The church re-opened as the Gibson Chapel Mission in June 2010 but has since been re-chartered as Gibson UMC. He served Methodist churches in North Carolina for 20 years prior to being called to serve the Metropolitan Church of Detroit in 1974. Following his retirement in 1998, he has continued to teach at Duke University Divinity School.

Don Maddox ‘64 has been honored by Leadership New Mexico as a recipient of the 2011 Distinguished Leadership Award.

The award recognizes individuals who have used their leadership abilities to improve the quality of life in New Mexico. Don practiced law, in private practice 1968-2000, and served as a New Mexico State District Court Judge 2000-2010. He has also served on the board of directors of the J.F. Maddox Foundation for over 40 years.

Paul E. Clark ’11 (Hon.), who has served Pfeiffer University since 2007, initially as director of annual giving and alumni relations and since 2010 as director of development, has been named associate vice president for advancement. In his new role, which took effect Sept. 1, Paul provides leadership in fundraising activities designed to increase financial support for the University through major restricted and unrestricted giving, annual giving, planned giving and special projects.

In addition, he is responsible for developing sustainable relationships with potential and existing donors through strong programming and networking opportunities.

“Over the past several years, Paul has not only provided a constant and productive presence for Pfeiffer’s advancement team, but proved himself to be an astute steward of the valuable human relationships that are essential to successful fundraising,” said President Mike Miller. “Paul’s input and leadership will be vital to Pfeiffer’s growth over the next several years.”

George Thompson ‘65 retired this year after eight years as superintendent of Charlotte’s 53 United Methodist churches and over 40 years as a Methodist minister. He was also named a trustee emeritus of Pfeiffer this year, after having served the University as a trustee since 1998.

George Singleton ‘69 received the Professional Photographers of America master of photography degree, last January. He was also featured in the March 2011 edition of

Southern Exposure magazine, in an article that looks at his life of service as well as his time at Pfeiffer as its first residential African-American student. David Joyce ‘75 has been appointed as the 13th president of Brevard College, in Brevard, N.C., and will assume his duties on Jan. 1, 2012. He has more than 30 years of experience in private higher education and has served as president of Ripon College, in Ripon, Wis., since 2003.

Al Kaye ‘78 has been named a 2010 Health Care Hero by the Greater Knoxville (Tenn.) Business Journal for his commitment to helping people with disabilities live challenging and fulfilling lives. He is a clinical specialist/ recreation therapist for the Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Center at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville.

Bill Moore ‘80 presented his Playing Your Best seminar series on the Misenheimer campus in October. The seminars are designed to help participants enhance human performance across performance domains such as music, sports, business, and life. As president of Moore Performance Consulting, Bill helps athletes, performing artists and business leaders improve their performance under competitive stress.

He has published a number of books on performance psychology for athletes, coaches and musicians.

Ruth Moose ‘84 is the author of TEA and Other Assorted Poems, published in 2010 by Main Street Rag. She has taught creative writing at UNC Chapel Hill since 1996 and written two books of short stories, as well as five other poetry collections. Her poems and stories have appeared in Atlantic Monthly, Redbook, Prairie Schooner, Yankee, The Nation, and Christian Science Monitor.

Mike Cerino ‘88 has been named the first head coach of the Charlotte Hounds, an expansion team for Major League Lacrosse.

Most of his coaching career has been spent at Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C., where he led the men’s lacrosse team to an NCAA Division II national championship in 2000.

Mike Downs ‘83 has been named county manager for Cabarrus County (N.C.). With Cabarrus County government for more than 25 years, he had most recently served as deputy county manager.

Alicia Randolph Rapking ‘83 has been appointed director of the Upshur Cooperative Parish House in Buckhannon, W.V., after having served United Methodist churches in the West Virginia Annual Conference for the past 22 years. Upshur Parish House is a mission project of the Conference.

Ryan Bennett ‘97 is the new principal at Anthony Elementary School, in Ocala, Fla. He joined the school district in 1998 as a special needs teacher and most recently served as assistant principal for Maplewood Elementary School.

Tammy Fesperman ‘99 earned the master of social work degree from Winthrop University in May 2011. She was named one of five Child Welfare Scholars in the State of South Carolina and has obtained her provisional license as a clinical social worker.

Robin Whitley ‘83 works at Southwestern Community College, in Sylva, N.C., as a student success coordinator. She is choir director at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church and has authored In a Southern Closet, which was published by Regal Crest Books in 2011.

Sandy Booth George ‘84 was named Principal of the Year for 2010-11, in the Mount Airy City School District. Under her leadership as principal of Mount Airy High School, the school has been ranked in the top three percent of high schools in America for the past two years and had the highest academic performance of any traditional high school in the five-county region, in 2009-10.

Bo McSwain ‘99, a detective with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, is one of several detectives featured on A&E’s new series “The First 48.” The show follows detectives during the first 48 hours of murder investigations, and Bo was featured during the debut segment. The Pfeiffer criminal justice graduate said it was surreal seeing himself on television. “It was a good

Wynter Sexton ‘99 has been named Teacher of the Year by The Arc of North Carolina. The award recognizes her as a leader in providing education to students with various disabilities.

She is an exceptional children’s teacher in the Kannapolis (N.C.) City school system and was awarded The Arc of Cabarrus County’s Teacher of the Year award in 2010.

Patricia Heard ‘00 MBA has been elected president of the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB). She had served as treasurer since 2007 and previously chaired the association’s Finance Committee. ASWB is the organization of the boards in the U.S. states and ten Canadian provinces that license and regulate social workers. Patricia is executive director of the BRIDGE Jobs Program, a United Way program based in Charlotte.

Anne Conover ‘05 MCE earned the doctor of ministry degree in May 2011 from Wesley Theological Seminary. Bear Frazier ‘05 and Jason Parnell ‘06 have produced The BAM Theory, a 13-minute short film that explores the loss, hopes and dreams of characters in the world of mixed martial arts. The film will be used to sell the story to a production house, with the ultimate goal of putting a movie in theaters.

Pandora Holloway ‘05 MBA has been promoted to fill a new permanent role as chief compliance officer at WakeMed Health & Hospitals in Raleigh, N.C. She has worked at WakeMed since 1982 and has been serving in this position on an interim basis since last year.

Freddy Garrido ‘07 MBA was named health services administrator, in July, at Federal Medical Center of Lexington, Ky. The center is one of five throughout the nation that houses some of the sickest inmates in the U.S. Ashlee Bennett ‘08 MHA is the new patient access manager for Lakeshore Internal Medicine, a new internal medicine practice in Mooresville, N.C. junior and senior years as softball coach for Albemarle High School. She will also teach math and coach girls’ tennis at East.

Robyn Zickmund ‘09 MCE is serving as a missionary in Namur, Belgium. She and her husband are establishing a cafe ministry, Le Coracle, in the center city.

Mr. Marvin W. Burke, Professor Eneritus of Music, 1967-1996 died on Feb. 6, 2011 at age 75. He gave voice lessons and taught music history, conducting, vocal methods and music appreciation at Pfeiffer for 29 years, before moving on to teach at East Carolina University in 1996. He was a member of the American Guild of Handbell Ringers and had sung solos with many of the major orchestras across the United States. He performed at Carnegie Hall 13 times with

He received an Army Commendation Medal for organizing and directing the Fort Knox Soldier Choir. He leaves his wife, Melva, who served as chair of the Teacher Education Department at Pfeiffer for 19 years, as well as two sons, David (Kim) and John ’89 (Marcie ’96), and two grandchildren.

John “Jack” Dahl, 78, former assistant coach for men’s and women’s golf, died on June 4. Born in Chicago, Jack was an accomplished track and field hurdler in high school and for St. Olaf College in Minnesota. He served for two years in the U.S. Army and graduated from Roosevelt University in Chicago. After a long sales career with National Gypsum Company and living in several states, Jack and his family moved to Charlotte in 1976 and to Old North State Club in New London in 1993. He is survived by his wife, Janet, daughter Karen Kramer, son John (Amy Lundy), and four grandchildren.

On April 22, Dr. Robert Barber, who served Pfeiffer for more than 15 years as an adjunct professor in the master’s of health administration program, lost his life tragically in a shooting while walking near his home in south Charlotte.

Originally from Albuquerque, Dr. Barber earned an undergraduate degree from the University of New Mexico in 1969 as well as a master’s degree in public administration in 1977. After moving to Greensboro, N.C., in 1985, his career in health care administration included positions at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Nalle Clinic and Mercy Hospital. For Carolinas Healthcare System, he worked in managed care, finance and administration and was chief financial officer and chief executive officer at CHS affiliate hospitals. In 1999, he earned a doctorate in health administration from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). In addition to teaching at Pfeiffer, Dr. Barber held adjunct positions at UNC Charlotte, MUSC and Central Michigan University.

A member of the New Mexico National Guard and the U.S. Air Force Reserves, Dr. Barber retired after 33 years of military service with the rank of Full Colonel. He was a fan of NASCAR, motorcycles, classic cars and competitive running. A lifelong Rotarian, he was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. He is survived by his wife, Deborah, who is a graduate of Pfeiffer’s masters of health administration program, and stepsons Eric and Brian.
