1.2 Design Approach Our approach to wayfinding design works in four parallel processes which are inter-related and iterative. We begin with spatial analysis to gain a deeper understanding of the project as a spatial system and a framework for movement. This research-based analysis gives us a picture of how users will access and use the site from a topological, top-down perspective which informs decisions about where to place and how to structure wayfinding directions.

WAYFINDING AND ENVIRONMENTAL GRAPHICS STONE TOWERS, CAIRO

The final area of input is the visual identity and design of the environmental graphics. Based on an analysis of the formal language already employed on the project, qualities such as layout, scale, colour, typography, iconography can be defined to coalesce and enhance the visual language already in place.

©

The third strand of our work is the design of information. Users of the site need to both find their way, but also to download information about what and who is around them. Directories, services, level markers all provide information about who and what are where. However, too much or too little information up front can either confuse or lead to disorientation. The information architecture must be such that only the right level and quantity of information is given at the right time and in the right format. For example, research has shown most people find ‘heads-up’ maps more legible.

OCTOBER 18, 2010

However, we are also interested in how the user experiences the site from a bottom up, sensate perspective. What does the user anticipate? What changes their perspective as they approach. How do they build a picture of the space around them and is that process surprising and enjoyable? The use of visual narrative can give identity to places and guide the user’s procession through the site.

WAYFINDING AND ENVIRONMENTAL GRAPHICS

OCTOBER 18, 2010

The architectural design of Stone Towers shows a strong formal and organisational logic derived from the regional landscape, which we would propose to carry through to the level of information and graphics. This formal and organisational logic can be expressed through the concept of “stratification”. Stratification is present in the natural context through geological layering which has built up over millennia, creating the petrified stone forest. Stratification is inherent in the architecture itself: in the facade striation, in the Delta terracing and the landscape banding. From an archeological perspective it has a relation to the written banding seen in the hieroglyphic engravings within ancient local architecture. In the tenant signage proposal that we put forward in December, the application of graphics to the building louvers referred to this underlying logic of stratification. Information, too, will require stratification, as at each junction in the visitors’ journey a different level of wayfinding information must be present. Within the wayfinding design scheme, this concept can be expressed through a variety of means; for example, directional vectors or ribbons pointing the way toward a destination in the landscape, sliding plates revealing information, peeling strips which reveal light, striation of graphics. Some of these design ideas have been elaborated further in the following design study.

Residential Edge

Landscape level -12.0

We would propose to collaborate with a local archaeological and historical expert to work on place naming. By uncovering the stratified layers of history and geology, heritage features of the site can be identified and encapsulated into facts which can be incorporated into the wayfinding and information strategies and re-embedded into the strata of the Delta. Names could be derived from Egyptian geographical regions, types of stone, precious metals, etc. Hieroglyphs were pictographs communicating information which were engraved often in stone. Hieroglyphics were presented in striAHA HADID ARCHITECTS ated rows or columns. The symbols always Zfaced towards the beginning of the line, providing a cue as to which direction to read. This concept can be reinterpreted in the use of iconography at Stone Towers. Both the technique of engraving or embossing pictographs in stone as well as the style of the icons themselves can be utilised to adapt the modern language of iconography to a local character.

Wayfinding and Signage Design brings together several different disciplines. During the concept phase we draw on expertise in graphic design, information design, pedestrian movement analysis and architectural design to inform the wayfinding and signage design process. Each of these areas of specialism are developed simultaneously during the concept design phase of the project. These are considered the building blocks of our design process. Together they are integrated into a coherent signage strategy for Stone Towers.

OCTOBER 18, 2010

Th

Silver (‘hedj’)written with the determinative for precious metal represented the colour of the moon and stars. Silver was a rarer metal than gold in ancient Egypt and held a greater value. It was already used as early as Naqada II, but there is no evidence that the Egyptians themselves mined silver. From ancient records it is thought that silver was imported from Mesopotamia, Crete and Cyprus.

Copper was the most common metal for everyday use in ancient Egypt. Even as early as 3400 B.C., the Egyptians had an intimate knowledge of copper ores and of processes of extracting the metal. By the end of the predynastic era, the Egyptians were in possession of practical, solid copper weapons. Copper in Egypt often contained natural arsenic. Therefore it was particularly hard. Copper ores were mined and melted in the eastern desert and in Sinai.

Bronze is a copper - tin alloy. In Egypt, it is considered that early bronze objects were imported, but there is ample evidence that copper smelting was practiced as early as Badarian times, as finds of pins, and beads attest. There are already some bronze objects known from the Second Dynasty. There are also several well-known bronze objects from the Middle Kingdom (about 2025-1700 B.C.). However bronze was in common use only from the New Kingdom (about 1550-1069 B.C.) on.

Gold represented the flesh of the gods and was used for anything which was considered eternal or indestructible. It was used for jewellery as early as Naqada II. From the Middle Kingdom (about 20251700 B.C.) on the gold deposits of Lower Nubia were mined. Some vestiges of gold ornamentation remain in the hieroglyphs of Sahure, of Egypt’s 5th Dynasty, whose reign is traditionally dated to 2487-2475 B.C. From at least the Old Kingdom the Egyptians exploited mines in the eastern deserts.

Electrum

is a naturally occurring alloy of gold and silver, with trace amounts of copper and other metals. Electrum was often referred to as white gold in ancient times but could be more accurately described as pale gold. Electrum is mentioned in an expedition sent by Pharaoh Sahure of the Fifth dynasty of Egypt and was used as early as the third millennium B.C. in Old Kingdom Egypt, sometimes as an exterior coating to the pyramidions atop ancient Egyptian pyramids and obelisks or for coinage.

Lapis Lazuli also known as Sapphirus in ancient times was an amuletic stone, worn primarily to provide its wearers with good luck and ward off evil spirits. It was common practice to place a lapis amulet, engraved with a chapter of the Book of the Dead, over the area where the heart had been removed, prior to the sealing of the sarcophagus. Given lapis lazuli’s extraordinary role in Egyptian artistic endeavors and its common coupling with gold, it was also highly valued and prized for its beauty. Blue was considered a prestigious ‘divine’ color.

2 DESIGN CONCEPT

17

2.3 Colours and Materials Celestial Properties The word ‘alchemy’ derives from the Arabic (al-klmya’). The origin of the word kimya’, pre-Arabic, is controversial and several hypotheses have been advanced. For some the word came from the Egyptian kemi (black), whence the Greek kemia which might indicate two things: Egypt, ‘the black land’ according to Plutarch - alchemy would be preeminently the science of Egypt; ‘the Black’, the original matter of transmutation, i.e.. the art of treating ‘black metal’ to produce precious metals. Metallurgy in particular was carried on with an elaborate technique and business organization. The systematic mining of metals was an important industry employing many thousands of workers in ancient Egypt.

WAYFINDING AND ENVIRONMENTAL GRAPHICS STONE TOWERS, CAIRO

The palettes at left represent both the metallic colour finish as well as a complementary range of flat colours alongside which can differentiate the five zones above and below ground. Above ground jewel-like metallic finishes can integrate seamlessly into the intricate architectural language. Underground, where the carpark will require a large area of coverage, flat colours can be an economical means of achieving a subtle and coordinated colour scheme.

©

In homage to these religious and magical ideas about metals, we have made a selection of five important metals used in ancient Egypt as a form of identification for the five retail/Delta zones. These are: gold, silver, copper, bronze and electrum. These identifiers can be carried through the wayfinding and identity strategies via several different applications. For example, above ground wayfinding inlays in the pavement and walls can employ each of these metallic finishes and colours, without using the precious metal itself. Below ground, a palette of flat colours that complement the metallics can be used within the carpark to identify the same zones.

OCTOBER 18, 2010

Egyptian and Chaldean mysticism relates precious metals and their properties to the sun and the planets - for example, gold symbolises the sun, silver - the moon, copper - Venus and electrum (a native alloy of gold and silver which was frequently used in architecture and coinage) - Jupiter.

18

2 DESIGN CONCEPT 2.3 Colours and Materials Pantone Colour Matching The set of 5 metallic finishes for the 5 zones forms the basic colour and material palette for the classification of zones in Stone Towers. This metallic palette provides an elegant array of colours and materials which also are rooted in the history of the place. Underground in the car park, colours must be well-differentiated in order to be memorable and clearly recognizable for wayfinding purposes. Additionally, metallic finishes should be used in more sparing quantities for large areas of coverage, such as the basement walls and floors. Here matte paints provide an economical solution.

Š

STONE TOWERS, CAIRO

WAYFINDING AND ENVIRONMENTAL GRAPHICS

OCTOBER 18, 2010

For this reason, each metallic finish has been paired with a set of matte colours which are used as an accent colour. In ancient Egypt, colours were often paired, creating a duality of colours. For example, red and green formed a pair representing Life and Death. Gold and silver formed a pair representing the Sun and the Moon. In the Stone Towers Wayfinding palette, the five metallics are paired with colours which closely complement the metallic finish but are bolder and more instantly recognizable. The Pantone Colour System is the international standard for graphic colour matching. This Colour System has a robust range of colours which have been employed in setting the palette for Stone Towers. The pantone colour system is recognized by printers and can also be matched for finishes to products and for areas of external paint. The palette chosen has been based on pantone solid matte colours. A selection of pantone metallic chips have also been defined for areas in which metallics are to be rendered in paint rather than metal. The table below specifies the specific colours selected for Wayfinding and Signage in Stone Towers.

2.4 Forms and Objects The Wayfinding and Signage scheme aims to integrate into the architecture and landscape of Stone Towers. This means that primarily the signage will be incorporated into the walls, floors and soffits of the architectural design. In the Delta, the luminous wayfinding bands provide a subtle and novel form of orientation within the exterior space. However, at key junctures, especially near the retail clusters larger, more prominent areas of signage will be required which are visible at eye level.

Of the three, Replica is the font which best suits the design language which has evolved in the Stone Towers project. Replica is a recently developed typeface designed by a highly regarded type foundry. It has been designed in the modern Swiss style typified by Helvetica. However, Replica represents a stylised form of the modern classic Helvetica in that it has a special detail at the corners, which are cut on the diagonal. From a distance Replica has a chamfered look, creating a soft impression. However at close range the angular corners become apparent.

The iconography for the Stone Towers scheme is influenced by the written language of hieroglyphics. Hieroglyphics are a 5000 year old formal writing system used by the ancient Egyptians that contain a combination of iconographic and alphabetic elements. As a formal language, they were often engraved in walls of temples and ceremonial places. Hieroglyphics were written in rows and could be read in either direction, depending on which way they were pointing.

3 SIGNAGE OVERVIEW 3.2 Sign Typology Families The following section introduces the Wayfinding and Signage strategy for Stone Towers. As there are different types of signs with differing purposes, the sign types are divided into families. These families of signs can be seen below. Directories list tenants and their locations, Orientation maps provide geographic information that gives the visitor of cognitive overview of their location, Directionals provide cues that aid in navigation, Identification names places and Branding gives visibility to tentants’ logos and brand identity. Within each of these families are a series of basic sign typologies which are to be developed in the Concept phase. These sign typologies each bear specific types of information relating to location, programme and orientation. The information which each sign typology must bear is described in the following location plans. As each of these sign types is developed, this information is integrated into the design.

4 MOVEMENT FRAMEWORK

44

4 MOVEMENT FRAMEWORK 4.1 Visitor Decision-Making Points For the pedestrian, the primary wayfinding arena is the Delta. Here the visitor will first emerge from the underground and will be looking for a means to orient himself. The nexus of pedestrian movement is the Retail Core. It is this node through which most traffic will pass. At peak times, footfall through these cores will be quite heavy. When the visitor arrives at the Delta level he will require cues to direct him through the north or south exit door. From the core, the next point in which the pedestrian has to make a key decision is just outside the core where he will be confronted with many possible paths. This junction of multiple routes, marked in orange below is the secondary decision-making point.

As the visitor approaches a specific office tower, he will then be confronted with a decision as to enter the A-wing or B-wing of that building. Again at the entrance to the first wing, from the Delta- the Bwing, he will make a decision as to whether to enter there or continue on to the following reception area.

STONE TOWERS, CAIRO

WAYFINDING AND ENVIRONMENTAL GRAPHICS

OCTOBER 18, 2010

The end of the retail streets marks the next point where paths diverge. From here a visitor may choose to access one of the office buildings for a meeting, to continue on to the next shopping zone or to find an event in the public space.

4 MOVEMENT FRAMEWORK

45

4.1 Visitor Decision-Making Points For the Visitor arriving by Taxi or Limousine and not using the car park to alight, the key decision point is the ring road and the drop off point at the north point of the North Buildings and on the South end of the South Buildings. Wayfinding is supported on two levels : From the Car large and very legibile text embossed into the building’s facade will identify the building and lead the vehicle to the nearest drop off point.

Once alighted the passenger will be guided to the buildings’s entrance by subtle wayfinding inlays in the pavement to the main lobby.

4 MOVEMENT FRAMEWORK 4.2 Zones of Movement

STONE TOWERS, CAIRO

WAYFINDING AND ENVIRONMENTAL GRAPHICS

OCTOBER 18, 2010

As the primary users of the development get to know their way around, they will seek to park their cars as close to possible to the Retail Core nearest their office building and minimise their walking distance to the core. Once at Delta level, they will find the shortest path to their work, minimising angle changes. At lunch they may become accustomed to eating close to the office and then may often leave straight away after work. This habituated efficiency of movement is natural. However, for the total development it will not serve to activate global movement throughout the development. It is this global movement of people which creates an integrated ‘place’.

4 MOVEMENT FRAMEWORK

47

4.2 Zones of Movement Wayfinding and Signage interventions can activate movement along the spine of the development. These devices not only serve to orient visitors, but also to intrigue and playfully invite movement linking through the development. With both subtle and direct guides indicating where specific buildings, shops and restaurants are, users can be enticed and reminded to venture beyond their specific routine.

5.0 Concept

TOWERS / TREES

The visitors journey from the car park to the offices Towers and Retail Areas - the process of alighting from the underground is the foundation for the way finding strategy.

STONE TOWERS, CAIRO

LANDSCAPE / GROUND COVER

WAYFINDING AND ENVIRONMENTAL GRAPHICS

OCTOBER 18, 2010

This “passage to the light” finds is expression in a continuously refining graphic language. While a carefully selected range of bold and complimentary colours dominates underground these gradually transform into a more finely crafted language above ground. Similar to a tree, with roots, a substantial trunk and a bifurcated leafy canopy.

52

5 APPROACH AND ENTRY 5.1 Gateway Signage As one approaches Stone Towers, they will be awed by the sight rising before them. To name and establish the brand identity for the development a gateway sign is required. This is the entry sign to the development. This sign should be large enough to be visible from the primary approach, the Cairo Ring Road for branding purposes. This sign should also be located at main entrances to assure visitors that they have found the right place. Stone Towers can be approached from several angles and has two primary entrances to the office development. The diagram below shows optimum viewing angles based on these multiple approaches.

5 APPROACH AND ENTRY

53

5.1 Gateway Signage Drawing on the basic idea of Stone Towers rising like petrified trees in the desert, the Gateway signage is formed from 5 metallic panels which grown from the ground. These five plates grow to different heights so that each subsequent plate is revealed behind the next. Displaying the five metals set against each other expresses the identity established for the wayfinding and signage scheme. Each plate terminates at a different angle, echoing the play on angular forms that is seen throughout the wayfinding scheme, illustrating dynamism and growth. Taken together, the sign alludes to architectural forms.

6.2 Basement Colour Concept For most users and visitors, the basement parking areas will be the reception to Stone Towers. This renders their visual appearance and hospitality essential. Additionally, each parking floor is vast and recognition of the route system will not be immediate for users- as it does not follow a grid. For these reasons, pedestrian wayfinding from the car to the lift lobby is very important.

Floor Colour Plan Zoom-In - Gradient Option

Floor Colour Plan Zoom-In - Single Colour Option

WAYFINDING AND ENVIRONMENTAL GRAPHICS

A simple solution to render this gradient concept effectively and economically is to paint each parking space with a specifically-defined colour within a gradated colour palette. Both the adjacent wall and ceiling are also coloured with this hue. Over the length of each zone a gradient is percieved, while each space is marked with a specific colour. Rather than requiring painted lines to define each parking space, the colour itself outlines the area within which a car is to park. This approach may also help the visitor to remember his specific parking slot by identifying the colour of his space.

STONE TOWERS, CAIRO

The gradient colour option uses colour to assist in wayfinding toward the lift lobby entrance, the immediate destination of those parking cars. The gradient leads the visitor ‘toward the light’ which pierces through at the retail atrium, a subtle guide. The further away from the core one is, the more intense the colour and the closer to the core, the lighter. Each parking zone is associated with a colour palette complementary to the metallic finish defined for the retail zone above. In each zone the gradient is comprised of four colours.

Š

The matte colour palette complementing the metallic finishes animates the carpark areas. These colour areas differentiate the parking zones from each other and identify which retail zone a visitor is underneath. At left are shown two design options: a gradient colour option and a single colour per zone option. The single colour option provides a simple, clear and economical colour scheme for the basement parking. Colours have been chosen to be distinct from each other and to evoke the appearance of the metal they are associated with.

OCTOBER 18, 2010

The proposed wayfinding strategy is intended for pedestrians. It is critical that the wayfinding system for pedestrians and vehicles function independently as users require guidance toward different origins and destinations for each.

6.2 Basement Colour Concept

68

6 BASEMENT 6.3 Graphic Language Concept Urban Grain Intensifies at Site The development of the graphic language for the project draws its references from the formal language established through the architecture. As a first move on the site, a diagonal grid was set up with respect to the primary artery through the area, the Cairo Ring Road. This diagonal orientation has then extended through the site, from the overall site layout to the terraced forms, down to the configuration of the parking zones.

69

6.3 Graphic Language Concept A City of Towers Rises out of the Desert Diagonal angular forms appear in section at Stone Towers as well as in plan. Both the North and South Towers create a play of angles as they ascend vertically. These angular forms are perceived as a basic element of the design. They create the impression of a forward-driving momentum and future orientation. Both the degree of the angle and the radius of the fillet therefore become an important consideration in the formal language.

VERTICAL CITY RISES OUT OF THE DESERT

In the following diagrams, the relationship between the angle and radius has been analysed in detail and a matrix of graphic possibilities has been created from this analysis. These studies form a catalogue of basic vectors relating to the architectural language which can be applied in different orientations, sequences and combinations. As the angle increases, the sense of speed increases. As the radius of the angle increases, a softer gestural impression is created. These changes within a single graphic element lend themselves to a sense of dynamism in the environmental graphics.

These basic vector forms have then been combined in different orientations through a series of studies aimed at developing both directional and non-directional graphic patterns for the basement. The patterns tested evoke a sense of acceleration which is meant to orient the visitor toward their primary destination within the basement - the vertical transport core to the Delta. These studies reveal some of the patterns under development.

74

6 BASEMENT 6.4 Exterior End Walls As the visitor descends through a series of perimeter ramps into the basement they will be seeking orientation. At this point, the identification of the five zones through colour is introduced. While the visitor does not yet associate a colour with their destination, they will be primarily seeking information on the location of the office tower that they are visiting or working in. By coupling the highly visible office address on the exterior end walls with the colour and name of the zone, the destination becomes associated with a colour.

These end walls provide simple, memorable information at a critical wayfinding point. Because each end wall is slightly different in length and proportion, the are painted simply with the zone colour to establish zone recognition in as clear a way as possible.

6.6 Atrium Walls Long walls extend along the office cores below the atrium in the basement carpark. These walls form a sort of tunnel due to low ceiling heights. They present a prime surface for vibrant wayfinding graphics which can animate the basement space and provide locational information.

Atrium Wall Gradient Option - Silver

As visitors circulate through the basement parking compartments looking for parking, a key consideration will be to find a parking space near their destination. These walls can therefore provide building identification. Additonally with directional indication signage they can subtly lead visitors toward their immediate destination once they leave their car, to the retail lift core. Around the retail core services, these core wall displays can serve to remind visitors of the zone they are in before they ascend into the Delta and can indicate the direction of the TOWERS STONE lift, stair and escalators.

The retail core must be particularly prominent as it is the prime destination within the carpark. Here again, subtle directional graphics are used to catch the eye and direct the pedestrian around the solid core walls and into the lift lobby. Key information such as the floor level, icons to the lift, escalator and stairs and zone name must be displayed here. The most prominent information is that which directs the visitor to the Delta Level.

An approaching pedestrian would be inclined to think that the glazed double doors in front of the lift cores are entrances when in fact they are exits. For this reason, environmental graphics identifying the lift, escalator, stairs and buildings to be accessed above ground are proposed to attract and redirect pedestrians toward the proper entrance and provide information as to what services are within the cores.

Since the carpark is not laid out on a grid with lift lobbies at the termination of sight lines, pedestrian orientation toward lift cores needs to be accentuated by information. The central retail atrium in fact obstructs views across the space toward other building cores, which may prove challenging if one parks outside of his building zone. The great majority of users will be visiting or working in one of the office buildings and will aim to park close to that building.

ELECTRUM A

Columns within the carpark are to be utilised for place identification. Each column is to incorporate a lit niche with inside faces coloured according to the relevant zone. Additionally, this colour is painted on the sides of the columns enlivening the space and orienting users.

The design of the lift car signage conveys a notion of upward movement - reflecting the vertical structure and progression through the different levels - and supporting the visitor’s intuition of moving upward. The directory is to be laser cut from the back lift wall panel, so as to be read upon entering the lift. The lift becomes a capsule of information as one ascends from below the surface to the light. At each subsequent floor, lighting behind the laser cut panel can be sequenced so as to light up the entire row of information when a particular floor is reached.

The hierarchy of information is clearly expressed through text size and style. In the retail core the zone is emphasised for cognitive recognition. The visitor must be alerted to the fact the he has parked in a specific zone before leaving the retail lift in order to find his way back to his car at the end of his stay at Stone Towers. The colour itself is not sufficient as an aide memoire. The next most important piece of information is the floor level number. The programme on this level is then further described in a lighter style text.

The design of the retail tenant signage is comprised of an elegant and simple glass panel standing to the side of the lobby entrance doors to the north and south. This glass panel is etched with fine directional lines indicating which way the visitor is to turn for each of the nearest buildings. The names of the tenants within that building are listed below. The sliding glass door is to slide behind this screen.

Therefore, it is proposed that signage is incorporated into the Delta Level of the retail core which clarifies the route toward specific companies located in Stone Towers. This signage incorporates both wayfinding and a carefully standardized area for branding sought after by tenants. If a tenant does not lease enough office space to have their signage on the building façade, they can have a second opportunity here. A series of spaces are provided for this signage, offering companies opportunities to display a presence here.

Sign A

Retail Tenant Signage Location Plan Š

1

OCTOBER 18, 2010

Upon reaching the Delta Level, the visitor arriving for a business meeting will require information on how to find the company that he is visiting. Each retail core serves as the vertical transport hub for 2-4 office buildings. In a typical retail core, 3 of these adjacent buildings are accessed through the southern exit from the retail core and the remaining building is accessed via the northern exit from the retail core. This path is not intuitive, as the visitor may have been told by his host to come to a North Building, but should find his way via the southern exit. Furthermore, his host may not have indicated whether the company is located in an A or B wing of the building. Once the visitor arrives at the building, information on which Wing he is looking for will be essential.

111

7 RETAIL AND DELTA 7.6 Retail Void Signage

The directional signage at the exterior void adjoining the retail cores will be very minimal and supports the general upward notion of the space - directing the visitor toward the right floor level. The signage is conceived as extruded characters, extending differing depths from the wall, up to150mm. The size and extrusion of the characters is dependent on the hierarchy of information necessary at that juncture. In this area, the floor level is the most critical information, with icons to vertical transportation and services as secondary information. The most important level information will be emphasized by either metallic paint or a metal edging around the characters, with the metallic finish corresponding to the relevant zone.

Route Network based on Research into Pedestrian Behaviour: 1

People will avoid turning back on their path and will take the most direct route, rather than the route which is shortest in metric distance.

2

People will take the route that has the least angle change from their current path, in heading toward their destination.

4

Additionally, but to a lesser degree, people will give prefer ence to routes which have the fewest number of level changes and instances of going inside to go outside again.

5

In general, if a person can see a direct path to their destinaton, but has obstructions to movement along this path, they will choose this path and make the most direct route around the obstructions. Seeing a direct line to the destination is given priority over a physically accessible path which is hidden.

Building names, retail destinations, feature gardens and subsequent retail zones can be etched into these directional vectors, subtly leading the pedestrian toward their destination.

30°

Likewise building entrances from the Delta are often visually obstructed by the retail clusters and other element, a jewel-like emblem marking the way will significantly reinforce orientation.

CO

Each of these illuminated emblems marks a specific location: a building entrance from the Delta, a lift to the parking levels, a hotel entrance or a retail destination. Each of these plates is to be laser cut with text and arrows and backlit to read both by day and night. A blend of informative, aesthetic & directional markers gives identity to the inner landscape.

Within each retail zone these illuminated plates will be finished in the metallic colour which corresponds to that zone. At prominent junctions, such as outside the retail cores, markers of different metallic finishes lead the pedestrian onward toward the next zone.

As the retail frontages face inwards toward each other and the passages between prevent long views across the site, these markers enhance wayfinding through these passages, dovetailing with the retail strategy, increasing footfall between zones and encouraging chain shopping journeys.

Each embedded wayfinding marker is designed in the shape of a diamond. These diamonds are both a point of origin and a visible marker at key decision-making points. They are laser cut with text indicating the destination of the band as well as an arrow pointing toward the destination. These diamonds markers come together to form junctions organised as a compass of diamonds. Pedestrian paths emanate from each junction and follow a trajectory toward a specific destination. Whenever the line changes direction or turns, a diamond is placed at the turning point to remind the pedestrian where the line is leading.

STONE TOWERS, CAIRO

The end of a path is marked by a termination diamond without an arrow. This termination diamond is finished with a more decorative perforated metal rather than solid metal.

OCTOBER 18, 2010

A diamond leading to the next retail zone is placed next to each retail core, so that the pedestrian is enticed to venture to the next zone.

WAYFINDING AND ENVIRONMENTAL GRAPHICS

The diamonds are designed to match the four primary angles within the landscape and architectural design, 0, 30, 60 and 90 degrees. The diamonds also indicate the distance to the destination, with large diamonds indicating a closer destination and smaller diamonds indicating a further destination.

7.9 Retail Directory

Within the retail zones, signage and maps are required to orient the visitor toward the destinations they may be seeking. Retail shops, restaurants and services are listed in a very simple type of directory, integrated into the landscape furnishings as a horizontal way finding element. A stand a metre high matching the benches designed for the public plazas can display this information. Importantly, this signage enumerates not only the shops, services and destinations within the zone it is located, but also lists all of the shops and restaurants in the other zones. This type of directory is essential in a shopping area. This directory also clarifies for the visitor that the development is comprised of 5 zones which are identified by 5 different metals and locates the visitor within this continuum.

The design arrived at after a series of iterations is an abstracted tree which takes into account the building structure while appearing as an ordered and precise list of tenants. Split into branches for each floor in the building, the directory can accomodate up to 2 tenants on the North Buildings and 3 tenants on the South Buildings. The anomalies in the wing system are not displayed within this structure as this diagram captures the visitor’s perception of a building wing. This directory is to be displayed in the receptions at entrances at the Delta and Dropoff levels in both wings. The tenants in the present wing are emphasized. However, the visitor can also see the tenant list for the other wing, which is displayed in a subordinate position.

The character sizes have been carefully analysed to conform to international standards of viewing distances as well as having been ‘mocked-up’ to visualise the specific scenario. The height of each tenant’s name and logo is to be no less than 13mm which is ample height for reading at a distance of 5-8 metres. The letter “A” denoting the wing of the building is much larger at 180mm so that it can be read from the entrance door to the building from the atrium at Courtyard and Drop-off levels.

8.4 Office Tenant Directory

At the reception in both the A and B wings, the office tenant directory should sit near the reception desk. An installation behind the reception desk against the core wall is proposed, where entering visitors have a clear view the name of the company they are looking for and floor level for this tenant.

Die cut opaque vinyl transfer mask adhered to translucent glass with diffuser

With these objectives in mind as well as the requirement for the tenant signage to be replaceable, a simple and yet elegant solution has been designed. This design uses a custom cut metal sheet which is perforated with the diamond motif over a gradient of densities. This gradient of densities allows the sheet to start as a solid sheet and to gradually become translucent, creating a beautiful and ethereal installation. Behind this removable perforated metal panel is positioned a sheet of translucent perspex acrylic which is backlit throughout the day. Adhered to the acrylic is a mask made of opaque vinyl which is easily die-cut to display the names of the tenants and signage. Thus where the mask is positioned, light does not come through, but where the mask has been cut, light comes through the perforated metal to read the tenants’ names and logos. For each floor level, an individual panel of perspex acrylic with a vinyl die cut mask can be slid in and out for replacement. Because the process of reprinting the mask is common and economical, this system is simple and robust.

The office tenant directory at the reception area is one of the first impressions for a visitor. As the base for welcoming visitors coming to meetings, it must give an impression of quality and prestige. For this purpose, the 5 metals set the perfect tone. Additionally the office reception signage is meant to feel special and bespoke, as an installation.

147

8 OFFICE TOWERS 8.4 Office Tenant Directory

Fabricated in the metallic finish relevant to the zone, a bespoke cut perforated pattern reveals light from behind which illuminates the tenant’s names and logos. The effect is monumental and yet subtle. Steel panels can be anodized to match 5 specific metal tones - silver, copper, bronze, gold and electrum. Since the tone of the finish is created by anodizing the metal, having 5 finishes should not incur additional costs.

STONE TOWERS, CAIRO

WAYFINDING AND ENVIRONMENTAL GRAPHICS

OCTOBER 18, 2010

The 5 tones are a basic wayfinding element. The metallic concept runs through the development and quite subtly breaks down a very large compound into smaller zones. The fact that this is acheived through subtle changes, as between gold and silver, rather than through bold, attention-getting colours such as red and green, underlines the refined and elegant nature of the scheme. For wayfinding, the buildings are primarily identified by their building number and wing letter. The classification by zone serves to break up the monotony and to create a subconscious sense of belonging to a smaller region within the business park.

The visualisations at left show an impression of how the office directory will appear. Through 1:1 mock-ups an ideal ratio of character size to perforation size has been determined, in order to achieve full legibility. A minimum letter height of 13mm is recommeded for office tenants, which allows for a veiwing distance of up to 4 metres. With a laser cutting capacity down to 1mm, each letter is legible through the perforation pattern. While the masks for each individual floor are cut to individual replaceable panels, the mask for the fixed elements of the signage, such as the tree and wing is adhered to a fixed panel.

The office tenant directory is to be visible behind the reception desk from the entrance. As the core walls are solid and run through both levels, this placement is consistent and monumental.

At the lift lobbies where visitors come and go, another tenant directory is advised for wayfinding reinforcement. This directory does not show the opposite wing of the building. Whereas at the reception, guests may still be trying to locate the correct wing of the building for a business meeting, once they access the lift lobby, they should be in the right wing.

Here the directory is envisaged in a simpler and more subtle format. This directory is to be located on the wall between lift shafts. A special backlit metal panel has been designed with laser cut removable panels that read the name of each company.

Within the office stairwell each level is to be numbered. The hierarchy of information is emphasised with the floor level appearing boldest, the wing designation next in the hierarchy and a reminder of which building one is in as the final element. This reminder of the building is suggested due to the large number of buildings in the development. This lettering is to be painted on the same elevation as the exit door.

Using the Architecture

‘Learning from Las Vegas’: the building as a sign

Strips That Read As A Composition Although the louvers are placed 0.5m apart, from the distance at which they are read, both from the human perspective on the ground, as well as from a vehicle approaching on the ring road, an image projected onto them reads as a unified composition. Our minds fill in the blanks in between.

Rather than tacking a foreign element onto the building, the building itself can be embedded with signage. As the building itself is sculptural, the signage should avoid appearing supplemental. Having identified a prominent zone for signage at the corners, louvers on the long elevations can be utilised to display signage. In this way no additional light or views are blocked from the interior.

OCTOBER 18, 2010

In these images, the tenant signage is envisaged in the daytime condition, where a full-colour corporate logo has been transferred onto the front face and underside of each louver in the tenant signage zone. This zone occupies a specific band in the louvered facade where special, removable and replacable panels can be fabricated to accomodate signage. In this zone, special louvers receive an L-shaped metal plate which has been colour coated with a PVDF powder coating. Where signage is to be applied, colour can wrap around the front and bottom edges, anamorphically appearing as the desired shape from human perspective. Where signage is absent, the plate can be powder coated to match the GRC louvers. This plate can be fabricated from perforated metal to allow light to pass through at night. The plate could be clipped, slid or screwed into place and an end cap applied.

Night: Louvers Embedded With An Addressable Grid Of L.E.D.S The concept of utilising the louvers to create the signage dematerialises at night when the corporate logo is made of light. Within the tenant signage zone, louvers are clad at their front and bottom faces with a perforated metal behind which is a grid of L.E.D.s. The field of L.E.Ds is composed of single addressable units which can map any digital image. Once installed, a field of white light, or even coloured light can be reprogrammed via a controller to illuminate a desired pattern. As the perforations in the metal panel align with the L.E.D. grid, new night time signage can be easily altered.

Alternative Concept A: Edge Lit Etched Glass This alternative concept can be used on the prominent areas of clear glazing at the corners of the facade. The signage in this case consists of a custom-etched sheet of glass mounted behind the glass facade. L.E.D.s hidden in the mounting brackets would edge light the glass creating a glowing effect in areas of acid etching. Only areas where the glass has been etched catch the light and glow a whitish colour, whereas the remainder of the glass sheet would remain transparent, letting light into the offices behind. This technique offers an elegant and simple solution.

8.8 Building -Mounted Tenant Signage Alternative Concept B: Translucent Mesh with Etching In the images at right a second alternative concept for tenant signage is shown in which a translucent mesh screen is hung on an armature suspended from the roof and precast facade panel. This woven metal mesh panel can be etched with a customized graphic. By day, the etched areas stand out against the smooth, shiny surface of the metal fabric while letting light through to the glazing behind. At night, the etched areas appear in stark contrast to the reflective wire mesh with help from back lighting. In addition, the woven mesh is fade-resistant and durable. Due to variation in the width of glazing available on each building at visible corners, signage size is based on a lowest common dimension.

The design of the building adress is recessed into the head walls of the office towers in the same fashion as the architectural features. It therefore provides a coherent and minimal solution.
