Introduction

W

elcome to the 19th Pf Awards’ Post Awards Brochure. The Pf Awards are the most prestigious awards in the pharmaceutical industry for sales, fieldbased and head office colleagues alike. On the 14th March, we came together, at the Royal Lancaster Hotel, to recognise the top performers in our industry. Every year, the Pf Awards bring together the best and the brightest of the pharmaceutical industry. However, it wouldn’t be possible without the incredible organisational support that we receive from those people who truly care about our industry. I’d like to extend my thanks to our sponsors of Pf Awards. Without them, the Pf Awards would not happen, and our candidates wouldn’t have the chance to prove themselves. Also, thanks must go to our independent judges, a mix of former industry professionals and clinicians who give up their valuable time at the Pf Awards Assessment Day to ensure that the highest standards of quality and professionalism are upheld. I would also like to thank every company that enters the Pf Awards and, of course, the candidates. Our industry makes a massive difference to patients’ lives and, with the quality of candidates we have seen this year, we should all be very proud. I hope you enjoy this Post Awards Brochure showcasing the fabulous winners who now go on to join our exclusive Pf Award Winners Club. Finally, I cannot believe that next year will be the 20th anniversary of Pf Awards. Exciting times are ahead and we hope to see you there next year. MEL ANIE HAMER Founding Director, E4H

The Judges “It was a real pleasure to be part of the judging team again this year. I was once again very impressed with how much the candidates demonstrated pride, passion and professionalism in their presentations of their work together.” Kathy Toogood, Strengths Focused Leadership Ltd “The standard this year was the highest I’ve seen in this category.

40 | Pf Awards Brochure 2019

Each call was more conversational and tailored than I have seen in previous years. The HCP thoroughly enjoyed each and every interaction and was impressed with the level of knowledge and engagement demonstrated. It is a pleasure to spend the day with so many passionate and professional people and I look forward to next year’s 20th anniversary!” Annie Dingley, Dingley Development Ltd

“It was my first year judging and I was blown away by some of the talent that we have in the industry. The pharmaceutical industry gets a lot of cynicism thrown its way but when judging the ‘Payer Engagement’ category it was clear to me that we deliver many initiatives that we can be proud of and that make a genuine difference to the lives of patients and the care given by the NHS. Not only that but Melanie and the team work tirelessly and passionately to ensure that these individuals, teams and projects are recognised for their outstanding achievements. I would urge anyone that thinks that they are doing special work or something that little bit different to submit and share next year – you never know, next year it could be you!” Emma Clayton, Grey Bear Consultancy

“E4H has established our industry’s leading awards event for Pf that recognises sales talent across a number of categories. This year’s event was a real challenge and there were many great examples of how the best candidates had to up their game to demonstrate their expertise in a relatively short period of time. The result led to a thrilling evening in London giving the finalists a night to remember and the winners an accolade that will last for a lifetime. Looking forward to next year’s 20th anniversary!” Stephen Lewis

“The Pf Awards are a fabulous showcase of the passion, dedication and talent that is within the industry and an opportunity to recognise outstanding performance. Being a judge was an honour and allowed me to witness first-hand the calibre and tenacity of the candidates who are setting the standard for the future of health care. Believe me when I say ‘the future is bright’!” Debbie Gordon, M & E Healthcare Consultancy Ltd

“I’m constantly impressed by the passion exhibited when candidates articulate the compelling initiatives they have developed and implemented in order to achieve a differentiating commercial impact.” Tony Toks Akiwumi, Kasocio Ltd

“Arriving at the judging feels like the first day of term; some nerves, lots of excitement, meeting up with old friends and new. Judges have a huge responsibility because this is not only about awards, it’s about fame and careers too. Winners at Pf Awards go on to be winners in life and it is a great privilege to meet so many passionate people and such a thrill when you see that something special that deserves the award!” Nic Hallett, Excel Communications “The Pf Awards Assessment Day at the King Power Stadium has once again maintained the highest standard of candidates, judging and process. It is always a pleasure to be involved in such an industry leading event. An event which is held in such high regard within the pharmaceutical industry.” Sue Tomlinson

The Winners

“The Pf Awards were really enjoyable and being nominated was incredible recognition within Novartis, but winning the category was truly an incredible feeling in a room full of industry peers. The entire awards process was extremely positive and enjoyable and leaves you feeling proud of the results you’ve achieved!” Mudeer Khwaja, Novartis, Commercial Impact Award

42 | Pf Awards Brochure 2019

“I was honoured when I won the Pf Award in the e-Representative category this year. I was the first Republic M! e-detailer in the UK and have seen first-hand how utilisation of the channel has massively taken off. It is not without its challenges when encouraging customers to change to new behaviours, especially as the environment into which we sell has evolved. More and more companies now fully integrate remote working into their multi-channel approach. The Pf Award organisers were among the first to recognise the value in the channel, so much so that in 2014 we got our own award category. The industry as a whole now places an increasing value and importance on the remote channel as there has been a demonstrable impact on sales growth when remote selling is implemented well, especially as it can synergise with all other channels from digital to face to face to deliver a comprehensive package. Personally, I have found the remote way of working has benefitted me enormously. I can continue with my passion for selling and delivering better patient outcomes while working from the convenience of my home.” Judith Lowry, Republic M! UK Ltd, e-Representative Award

“Winning the Secondary Care Specialist category was a huge surprise for me. The Pf Awards 2019 process was tough, but also very enjoyable; stretching my sales skills, business planning process and presentation technique to their maximum alongside the best talent within the industry. Having been in the pharmaceutical industry for just under two years this award provides fantastic recognition and provides me with greater confidence in the skills that I have. It also highlights the excellent work that my direct colleagues and wider team at AbbVie have done in supporting, coaching and mentoring me through my transition from an NHS clinical role into becoming a strong Account Specialist and I cannot thank them enough for this.” James Perry, AbbVie, Secondary Care Specialist Award

“I am delighted to have been involved in this initiative with the Scottish Ambulance Service, the Fife Diabetes Centre and SCIDiabetes and to win an award for this is an incredible honour and I’m very proud to represent the project on behalf of my NHS and MSD colleagues. The project has significantly improved patient care, reduced pressure on ambulance services and the accident and emergency department and now will be launched across all the other health boards in Scotland.” Neil MacDonald, MSD, Joint Working Award “To win an award in the Nurse Advisor category at the Pf Awards 2019 is a fantastic achievement! Ostomy care is often the forgotten speciality, but receiving this award has put it in

the spotlight. I am proud that the work I do within Coloplast, and the difference we make to our patients’ lives on a daily basis, has been recognised and rewarded within the pharmaceutical industry. Tracey Hart, Coloplast, Nurse Advisor Award “I am absolutely delighted to win Experienced Account Manager of the Year at the Pf Awards 2019, particularly as I was shortlisted in the New Account Manager category in 2018. It was an extremely challenging but rewarding process to be a part of and the standard of the other candidates was incredibly high. It genuinely took me by surprise when I was announced as the winner and is an achievement I am immensely proud of.” Tom Marlow, LEO Pharma, Experienced Account Manager

“I didn’t really know what to expect when entering the Pf Awards and I am still a little dazed at winning. However, I found the whole process a great experience and would encourage everyone to apply if they can. The assessment centre was intense but overall a lovely atmosphere and it was great to catch up with colleagues from other companies. I feel privileged to have gone through and it is a real honour to win in a field of such amazing candidates.” Emma Reynolds, Roche Products Ltd, Secondary Care Specialist Award

“The Pf Awards are one of the largest events in the pharmaceutical industry calendar, so to have the opportunity to network with the best in the industry was a fantastic experience, and one that will stay with me forever! To then go on to be awarded both the Future Leader Award and Outstanding Performer Award is an absolute honour. The support and opportunities that I get at Ashfield, with less than three years of industry experience, is phenomenal and something that I am truly grateful for. I am excited to see what the future holds for our incredible industry, and even more excited to be a part of it.” Lorna Towndrow, Ashfield, Future Leaders Award / Outstanding Performer Award

44 | Pf Awards Brochure 2019

“I have always taken great pride in the relationships I build with healthcare professionals and truly believe that strong working relationships are key to improving outcomes for patients, the NHS and industry. The culture at MSD supports and encourages the desire to achieve such outcomes. Diabetes is a growing challenge in the UK, and from a patient perspective I believe the condition should not define nor prohibit a normal lifestyle and I believe that nobody should be denied the opportunity of living a normal healthy life. The calibre of entrants within this category was astonishing; and to be recognised for my efforts in trying to make a difference is something that I am sincerely proud of.” Sam Singh, MSD, Primary Care Specialist Award

Raheel: “‘Develop and train people to an exceptional standard so they could leave, but treat them well enough so they want to stay’ – one of my favourite quotes. I am overjoyed to have won the Learning & Development Award for an unprecedented second time. I absolutely thrive off the challenges that learning & development (L&D) provides and the people I work with on a day to day basis make it all the more enjoyable. It’s a great accolade to win this category as there are some exceptional L&D practitioners in our industry. Thanks to all involved at Thornton & Ross for engaging in the L&D strategy and making the journey all the more exciting.” Kay: “It’s a fantastic feeling to have won this category with a piece of work that we were already very proud of. To compete against top names in the industry and win is true recognition of Thornton & Ross’s commitment to developing and retaining talent.” Raheel Mirza & Kay Varlas, Thornton & Ross, Learning & Development Award “I am very proud to have represented Roche and the whole team I work alongside at the Pf Awards in the New Account Manager category. Thank you to all those involved in the nomination and assessment centre process.” Julie Van Es, Roche Products Ltd, New Account Manager Award

“I am totally overwhelmed to have won Best Newcomer at the Pf Awards 2019. I can’t believe how much I have enjoyed the whole process from start to finish, despite the nerves. It was incredible to be surrounded by so much talent, and to be standing alongside them receiving an award, despite being relatively new to the industry was an honour. I am so excited about

my future in the pharma industry and this has already opened many more doors for me and given me a great platform to continue my success. Thanks to all involved at the Pf Awards, and to my wonderful judges who made the whole Pf Awards Assessment Day very enjoyable.” Shannon Travers, CHASE on contract to GSK, Best Newcomer Award

“Being recognised by your own company is great but recognition from colleagues across the wider UK pharma industry is a real honour. The awards were really well organised and the Pf Awards Assessment Day had a really positive atmosphere. After our presentation we felt it went well but our assessors made us feel like we should be really proud of the work we had done.” Richard Jarvis, Novartis, Commercial Impact Award

“I am so pleased and proud to have won the first ever Pf Award for the Payer Engagement category. From start to finish, the whole event was an enjoyable and fun experience. To have had the honour of representing Novartis at such a prestigious event as the Pf Awards was truly amazing. To have then gone on to win really was the icing on the cake!” Karen Swarbrick, Novartis, Payer Engagement Award

“I was surprised but delighted to win the Field Manager Award this year, it is one of the highlights of my career so far. To say I enjoyed the Pf Awards Assessment Day might be stretching the truth, as it was challenging, but it was great to represent Thornton & Ross against the best of the best in our industry. Throughout the day I was keen to demonstrate my passion and commitment to making a team successful and I found all of the judges to be just as keen to ensure that they got the best from me. I met several of the other Field Managers on the day and I was impressed with their dedication and knowledge, hence my surprise at winning. The awards evening was excellent, ably (and amusingly) hosted by Hugh Dennis with a great atmosphere throughout the evening and all the winners, runners up and the wider audience being exceptionally supportive of each other. It was also a great opportunity to network, catch up with colleagues from across the industry and to make new friends. I am extremely proud to have represented Thornton & Ross at the Pf Awards this year. As I am sure any people manager would say, the team are the reason I am doing so well and I was pleased to win for my team as much as for myself.” Dave Lampard, Thornton & Ross Ltd, Field Manager Award 46 | Pf Awards Brochure 2019

“I am truly thrilled to have won the ‘Future Leader’ and ‘Outstanding Performer’ at this year’s Pf Awards. To be recognised by industry experts and winning this award based on the work that you do is a humbling feeling. There are many people who have contributed to my journey so far and without them this achievement wouldn’t have been possible. I am proud to work in this industry and for a company that plays such a pivotal role in helping to protect our population, past, present and future.” Jack Worts, MSD, Future Leaders Award / Outstanding Performer Award “To me, winning the Pf Award was very much about recognition of what I value the most in my job: the right engagement with my internal and external stakeholders. During the process I paused and thought about my role, the impact I have and the value I bring to the organisation, NHS, clinicians and most importantly the patient. I am personally very happy to be in a job that aims to support all of these aspects. It hasn’t always been easy, but this award brings a personal perspective that what I do matters and is being recognised both internally and externally.” Benoit Raymond, Novartis, Medical Scientific Liaison Award

We were delighted to be short listed for ‘The Cross-Functional Team Award’ and embraced the assessment process whole heartedly. At the Pf Awards Dinner we both felt overwhelmed by winning such a prestigious award and are extremely proud of our achievement.” Katrina Lyons & Sue Foster, LEO Pharma, Cross-Functional Team Award
