Mission and strategy
Capturing synergies from diversification.
Multiple energy sources across different geographic areas. Falck Renewables develops, designs, constructs and manages energy production plants with the aim of contributing to global needs for clean energy from renewable sources. This is driven by a business plan based on the diversification of production technologies and geographical areas. Thanks to this strategy, Falck Renewables has a flexible investment-allocation policy that mitigates risks while also capturing market opportunities.
Falck Renewables generating plants prevent approximately 550,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year, equivalent to the amount absorbed by 78 million trees. To grow, trees need approximately 7kg CO2 per year. This data changes according to age, species and geographic area.

From concept to operation. The integrated skills of Falck Renewables management cover the entire life cycle of projects spanning international renewable energy markets. During the preliminary phase, the company undertakes development activities, pre-feasibility and feasibility studies, technical specifications and economic evaluations, the design of the project and funding scheme. During the execution phase, Falck Renewables manages a tendering process, negotiates and awards contracts for construction and supervises construction. During the operations phase, its focus is on O&M and energy portfolio management.
Local communities are important stakeholders and Falck Renewables looks to liaise closely with their representatives, from the beginning of the development phase, through to construction and operation of the plants.

Activity - wind energy
The ability to listen to the wind.
Wind farms in Europe. Wind energy is regarded as a “zero impact on the atmosphere” energy source and Falck Renewables is supporting its rapid growth, consistent with the 2008 EU Climate and Energy Package. Falck Renewables currently has an installed capacity of more than 620 MW (end of 2011) in Italy, Spain, France and the UK. A further 100 MW are authorized or under construction. Falck Renewables has recently completed the Buddusò and Alà dei Sardi wind farm in Sardinia whose 138 MW makes it the biggest wind farm in Italy in terms of installed capacity. In addition, Falck Renewables has a further 14 wind farms in operation. At present there are many other ongoing initiatives, mainly in existing core markets and in Eastern Europe.
While developing its projects, Falck Renewables supports initiatives aimed at preserving the quality of the environment.

Activity - waste to energy AND waste management
When waste is a positive answer.
A perfect partner for waste treatment. Falck Renewables believes that waste-to energy is the right answer to the problem of disposing waste downstream of separated waste collection, fully in line with the target of safeguarding the environment. By applying the best technologies on the market, our WTE plants allow us to exploit waste that would otherwise be sent to landfill, to produce electricity and heat. Thanks to the acquisition of two companies active in the field of processing of non hazardous urban and special waste in Gorle (Italy), Falck Renewables which was already present in this field with the Trezzo sull’Adda, Granarolo dell’Emilia and Fusina WTE plants (Italy), now can offer a greater integration in waste disposal and increase its offerings in environmental services to the community. In line with the industrial plan, the company intends to optimise its existing operational waste to energy plants and is monitoring other growing markets in Europe.
The Trezzo sull’Adda and Granarolo dell’Emilia waste to energy plants provide the energy needs of 44,000 households.

Activity - Energy from biomass
From life to life.
Clean energy from nature. Biomass is an organic material that can be used as fuel to produce energy. Biomass is a clean, renewable and neutral resource in terms of CO2 emission: the amount of carbon dioxide produced during the combustion is equivalent to that absorbed during the growth of the biomass itself. Based on the example of the Rende biomass plant in Italy, Falck Renewables actively seeks opportunities to use forest residues, wood chip or other wooden waste as renewable sources to increase the production of energy from this renewable source.
The Rende power plant, which sources only local biomass, produces a saving of 20,000 tonnes of oil equivalent (TOE) or 158,000 barrels of oil per year.

Activity - Solar energy
Energy from the sun.
More than 16 MW of solar plants. The production of electricity from photovoltaic panels takes place without the emission of any pollutant and without using fossil fuels. Falck Renewables is active in this field with more than 16 MW of solar plants. The operational plants are located in the municipalities of Mesagne, Rende, Trezzo sull’Adda, Centuripe, Catania and Vittoria, in Italy. Falck Renewables SpA has also signed two joint venture agreements for the development, financing and building of rooftop photovoltaic installations in Italy. Opportunities are being pursued for the development of further initiatives, both in Italy and abroad.
Falck Renewables solar plants in Siciliy generate approximately 20,000 MWh per year of zero-impact energy.
