Decorated Prince George veteran Armand Denicola cut down his family’s Christmas tree for their newly-built house on the homestead in 1966.

“There wasn’t even Gyproc on the walls but we had a Christmas tree,” Doreen Denicola, 94, recalled with a smile.

“This story starts in 1964 while planning to build our new house at the farm on Foreman Road,” she said.

“We thought it was too good to be true.

Our jaws hit the floor because we’ve been talking to countless organizations and well-meaning individuals and businesses, but it has always never come to anything,” said Gustaftson. “Hats off to Reto Steiner because he’s just a wonderful individual with a very generous heart willing to help out so we are very grateful for him and his entire company and everything they’ve been able to do.”

He said a 600 sq ft structure constructed with SIPs can use as little as $30 per month in power for heat in the middle of winter and the structures will even retain warmth just from an occupant’s body heat.

“These things will have a bed in them.

That’s essentially what they are - they’re safe, secure and there will be locks on the doors,” he said.

A Calgary company donated six tiny house structures to unhoused residents of the Moccasin Flats encampments just before Christmas.

Volunteers in Prince George led by Brad Gustafson and Phillip Fredriksson have taken it upon themselves to build shelter structures for unhoused residents living in the encampment.

Reto Steiner, CEO of InGreen Building Systems, heard what they were doing and wanted to help.

“We were approached out of the blue to two weeks ago from a businessman in Calgary, who owns and operates structural insulated panel (SIP) manufacturing plants,” explained Gustafson.

InGreen Building Systems develops and manufactures SIPs, which are high-performance building panels that consist of a rigid foam core insulation bonded between two structurally rated skins of OSB sheathing.

He noted that the units are totally transportable, as well. They can sit on the ground indefinitely or be moved somewhere else without much effort.

Steiner has used this technology to build tiny homes for a few communities in northern Alberta as well, however, those projects were supported with government funding.

“Brad and Phillip were dedicated to this, they didn’t want to do this for any other reason than the community needed this product, and we empathized with that and said we will help you out,” he said.

“I think Prince George has been trying to do this and the politics and the bureaucracy that gets wrapped up around it is what it is.”

In mid-November, the City of Prince

George issued a stop work order on the tiny homes as the shelters Gustafson and Fredriksson were not up to code.

Mayor Simon Yu said it was a liability issue for the city as the structures do not have building permits.

However, the volunteers were determined to keep the project going and continue building the tiny homes regardless.

“In this case, we just looked at it and said we can turn these around quickly and we can get you a solution. We happen to have some product right here on the ground. Let’s just do this. It’s the right thing to do and let’s make it happen,” said Steiner.

“Just do the right thing. If there’s something we can do to help, then why aren’t we doing it?”

He said he hopes this donation will build momentum for the tiny home project with more supporters coming on board.

Including the six donated tiny homes, Gustafson and Fredriksson will have completed about 15 structures so far.

Displaced Ukrainian family puts down roots TED CLARKE Citizen staff

In just one day, on Feb. 24, 2022, the dream Roman Pokynchereda had of living with his family in a house he built in Vinnytsia, Ukraine, was shattered.

They huddled with their neighbours in air-raid shelters for five days before Roman and his wife Maryna decided to pack up a few clothes and leave the city.

They eventually made their way to Bulgaria, where Ukrainian is more commonly spoken, and they stayed for three months.

They had a small apartment and enough money but they wanted something better for their kids.

Half a world away in Prince George, Pat and Brenda Bell attended a church bake sale whose proceeds were going to help Ukrainians who wanted to leave their country. The Bells inquired about sponsoring a Ukrainian family and met Andriy Kuts, who knew the Pokyncheredas, and he gave them their email address.

“That’s why we are here,” said Maryna. “Our family was first - we have a big group from our city here now.”

The Bells gave them a place to live and the Prince George For Ukraine support group stepped up with clothing and personal items.

Roman and Maryna bought a house last spring in the Pinewood subdivision. Their house is close to the Ukrainian St. George’s Catholic Church where many of the 235 Ukrainians from 84 families displaced by the war now living in Prince George meet on Thursday evenings.

The weekly gatherings are especially helpful for

Ukrainian seniors like Roman’s mother Lidiia, where they share a common language and their culture.

Lidiia spent the summer with the Pokyncheredas and went back to Ukraine on Sept. 27 and the Pokyncheredas are hopeful she will be back to live with them soon.

“Her heart was there and she decided to return to understand exactly where she would be better,” said Maryna. “She is doing well now... but we think that she will soon return to Canada for good.”

Roman, 39, was hired shortly after he arrived in Canada as a finishing carpenter for IQ Builders, while 33-year-old Maryna works as an accountant’s assistant for the Bell’s company, Family Fast Foods Ltd. “It’s not easy for me to find English work and it’s a dream to have that job,” sad Maryna.

Maryna’s 82-year-old grandmother and her aunt now live in the house in Vinnytsia, and Maryna says it’s unlikely they will go back to it, even if the war ends.

They like Prince George and their kids --Masha, 14, Yeva,12, and eight-year-old Pasha -- have made a new group of friends. Pasha told his mom he only wants to go back for a summer vacation, not to stay.

“We do not want to return, only with our minds, because we know that there is no future for us and our children, but our hearts will forever remain in the country where we were born,” said Maryna.

‘It was always Mum and Dad’s tree’ Continued from page 1

The Denicola family has been on the land since the early 1900s.

“We moved into the house in the winter of 1966 and of course needed a Christmas tree,” she explained.

“My ever-resourceful husband went looking for one on the farm. As was his custom, he always left the bottom branches of the tree on the stump. He never cut it to the ground. As years passed the little tree grew and the bottom branches were always reaching, reaching, reaching for the daylight. It’s a neat comparison how the tree had to struggle and we had to struggle in order to achieve a

new life. We were starting over and so was the tree.”

Mrs. Denicola enjoyed watching the tree’s growth over the years.

“It was encouraging to see the progress the tree made as we were making

progress building our farm out of a bare piece of ground,” she said.

Soon a big stately spruce tree appeared bearing two trunks.

“It stood over 50 feet tall and it seemed a fitting testimony to the 50 or more years of effort we put into the building and production of our life here on the farm,” she said.

“Sadly in April of 2022 a very severe north wind tore our tree - roots and all from the ground.”

Mrs. Denicola’s son Drew Larson wanted to honour his parents and knew just what he wanted to do.

Armand passed away on March 1, 2019,

at 96 years old, making Drew’s plan an especially poignant memorial.

“It was always Mum and Dad’s tree,” he said.

The minute the tree fell, Drew knew he needed two good-sized logs for his special project.

“It seems the life of the tree and our lives have come full circle because our son has contrived a way to give our tree a very meaningful symbol of the life we built together, 57 years later, when the pace of life has slowed a little, the trees have been transformed into two beautiful benches – a place of rest,” Mrs. Denicola said.

Establishing or expanding a provincial park requires a full-blown legislative amendment and approval from a majority of MLAs. Coxson is happy with the outcome.

“It looks like they pretty much followed our recommendation here,” Coxson said.

Indeed, the province took the 67 hectares Coxson and Senior surveyed and added a 16-hectare dogleg so the site abuts Highway 16 and provides a corridor for wildlife down into the valley.

had also been home to the trailhead for the west end of the Driscoll crossover trail.

It is now about three kilometres further west where it will likely remain.

Coxson is not finished yet.

He is also seeking protected area status for a 986-hectare corridor connecting Ancient Forest-Chun T’oh Whudujut and Sugarbowl-Grizzly Den provincial parks.

“It’s a critical corridor both for caribou activity and old forest values,” Coxson said.

As a result of a complaint to the Forest Practices Board many years ago, the corridor has been designated as a

“candidate” old-growth management area and a pause has been put on any logging planned for the zone.

But Coxson fears the pause is only temporary.

“I would be much more comfortable with that corridor having more formal protections,” he said.

His best bet for seeing that occur appears to be the federal government’s plan to have 30 per cent of the country protected by 2030.

“That could be one consideration for it.

I’m looking more at ecosystem integrity in the Upper Fraser. We know where significant patches of old growth forest are

and where caribou use and occupation areas are; we need to utilize some of our existing information and make decisions in that respect,” Coxson said.

If preserved and protected, Coxson sees a bright future for the old growth that exists in and around Ancient Forest-Chun T’oh Whudujut, even in the face of climate change.

“I’m really pleased with the designation of the Ancient Forest protected area and park because the relatively wet north face of Driscoll Ridge is probably a site where these ancient cedar stands will be able to weather climate change and will be more resilient into the future,” Coxson said.

Rustad is the change we’re all looking for

A

ccording to my editor, I need to begin this particular column with a disclosure: yes, this man, who ran for the BC Conservatives in 2013 against the Minister of Everything, Shirley Bond, and has since written a Citizen column under the heading “Right of Centre” for ten years, has a current membership in John Rustad’s BC Conservative Party.

If this revelation shocks anyone, please send me all of your personal details and banking information: I have a BC Rail lease for you...

With that nonsense finished, let us get down to business: does Rustad, his platform, and the movement he is building across BC earn my endorsement?

Yes, on all three counts.

Why? Because Rustad’s words, deeds, and policy proposals, as well as the candidates he is recruiting, are worthy of my trust.

He is not the messiah but he is the voice of common sense crying out in the BC wilderness.

Shall we not answer his call?

Let’s take this beat by beat. In Canada, party expulsion equals electoral defeat.

Rustad knew this better than most, and yet, when it was demanded he take down his retweet of Patrick Moore, he refused, choosing to stand with his constituents who need fertilizer to feed us.

What was the fruit of Rustad’s refusal to raise his hand against Nechako Lakes?

The party that left him for dead is now entirely eclipsed by the Goof from the Hoof and his motley crew of Tories.

A great underdog story, especially if by election time Rustad’s rebels are competing for government. But what about the fact that Rustad has been elected 20 years, all of that under the BC United/Liberal banner: doesn’t that taint him?

If I have learned anything about politics after a decade, you work with who you have; and our movement won the lottery because we got a well-known, happily married, politically astute Northern British Columbian with the common touch.

So, the momentum and the man in charge are the genuine article. But what about the policies being proposed?

Well if you look through the BC Tory website, the platform is so familiar it’s almost boring: cutting taxes and red tape, increasing affordability for families, fixing public services and infrastructure, as well as facing tough issues like homelessness and drug addiction with

approaches that acknowledge the need for both justice and rehabilitation.

None of that would raise an eyebrow in any chamber of commerce in Canada. What got folks squawking this fall was Rustad and chiropractic Dr. Bruce “Backcracker” Banman showing that all is not well at your schools, hospitals, or gas pumps: anti-human ideology has captured the ruling parties of the West. Call it what you will, but the results are unmistakable. While the elites virtue signal, costs go up for average folks and services decline or even become hostile.

It took guts to read SOGI materials out loud in the legislature, to state emphatically that holding onto outdated mandates is killing healthcare, to prove with science that taxing people into poverty is not going to change the weather. After years of a dithering opposition and an NDP government running roughshod over our rights in every direction, Rustad and Banman have stolen the show by punching well above their weight. And those swings are connecting.

Would I offer any advice to Rustad? If the election is called early, my only advice is to appeal directly to voters. At the leaders’ debate, in the media, use the words of WAC Bennett in 1952: “on election day, cross the floor with me and bring good government to British Columbia.”

Bennett campaigned tirelessly across BC, building the SoCred movement, as Rustad is doing now for the Tories. Rustad has 2 seats; WAC had 1. After 1952, Bennett was Premier for 20 years.

Lastly, for the folks who have been burned innumerable times: is change finally here?

I suppose there is no way to know for certain, but I can say this: Rustad has shown integrity and consistency in a time of cowardice and chaos.

Perhaps, we can just dare to hope.

Senior, 87, walks almost 18 km each day CHRISTINE DALGLEISH Citizen staff

He’s walked University Way more than 5,000 times in Prince George.

Dave Milne, 87, is an extraordinary walker.

Back in his working years Milne was the northern coordinator for BC Hydro’s Lifestyle Program that encouraged workers to stay fit.

Under Milne’s guidance 92 per cent of the employees participated in the program, he said.

After he stopped working, he just kept going.

“The day I retired on April 7, 26 years ago, I started walking and I’ve walked pretty near every day since,” Milne smiled. “I just love walking.”

Milne said there’s some pointers he can share with those who want to walk up university hill.

“If you walk up university hill, walk on the city side of the hill because the trucks and buses going up the hill produce all

those fumes,” Milne said.

Milne advises that if you’re going to start walking you need to start gently.

“Don’t try to do 10 laps the first day or 10 kilometres the first day,” Milne advised.

“Take your time and slowly get into your walking program and don’t push it so that you wear yourself out.”

Milne also shares his secret on how he avoids any adverse side effects of his flu and covid vaccinations.

“As soon as I get my flu shot or covid shot I walk approximately five kilometres after the needle is in,” Milne said.

“It allows the medicine to get into your system rather than stay in the shoulder.

The shoulder gets sore because it stays dormant. Get out and walk as much as possible - I never had a reaction.”

Milne starts his first walk at 6:15 a.m. and goes for about 1.5 hours and then heads out again in the afternoon for a total of about 18 kilometres each day.

“This is a part of my life and I hate to miss my walking time,” Milne said.

Prof makes splash on underwater hockey team CHRISTINE DALGLEISH Citizen staff

When he plays his favourite sport, he barely keeps his head above water.

But that’s the point because University of Northern B.C. professor Stephen Rader, 59, coaches, mentors and plays for the university’s underwater hockey team, the Timberwhales, where all the other players are less than half his age.

Rader’s fascination with the underwater world started with Jacques Cousteau’s TV show.

Cousteau was an oceanographer who offered a glimpse into underwater adventure with his series The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau that aired from 1966 to 1976.

“So I wanted to be a marine biologist, I wanted to go scuba diving and I had a couple of friends in high school who were licenced for scuba,” Rader said.

So he signed up for classes.

Then his friends told him about the underwater sport they played.

“I said ‘Underwater hockey? That sounds really nerdy, I’m not interested,’ I was one of these cool track kids,” Rader joked. “They kept telling me I should try it and I finally did and I never looked back.”

Underwater hockey sees six players per team playing at once for control of a weighted puck using short sticks. The aim is to get the puck into the opponents’ trough. There is no goalie – nobody can hold their breath that long – and there are 10 players per team.

Captain Naomi Cole offered some insight into the game.

you can imagine, happens very fast,” Cole said.

Assistant captain Ella Stratton offered some perspective.

“So we’re just working on our skills, passing the puck on the bottom of the pool and working on strong kicking to get it to the other side,” Stratton said about what goes on during weekly practice at the Aquatic Centre.

Rader can hold his breath for up to a minute on land but he’s looked at some research, he said, and people are only

underwater for an average of about 11 seconds when they’re playing underwater hockey. There’s a lot of physical exertion that takes place during the game and that takes up a lot of energy, which requires more oxygen.

The team does a lot of drills surrounding the skill of breath holding, he said.

For the future of the sport, Rader would like to see a community team develop to play the university team.

UNBC had a club team back in 2007 and it was super popular, he added. There

were about 40 players on the team back then. Currently, there are only 20 people who have stuck around to develop their skills but the team has seen about 40 people try it and welcome others to give it a go, as well.

“We’re hoping that enough of the alumni team will come back to play the current team,” Rader said.

Lofty goals for the Timberwhales team includes competing at the Nationals in May that is held under the Canada Underwater Games Association guidelines.

Meet a four-generation caregiver for her family TED CLARKE Citizen staff

Heather Mckeand was just a kid when her calling in life came knocking.

She became the primary caregiver in her family and never let go, a job that would eventually span four generations.

It started when she was only seven, cooking meals for her siblings and keeping order in the house while her father tended cattle on their farm, and it’s never stopped.

Now at age 76, Mckeand is still sharing her love and a lifetime of nurturing skills with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, living together in their Prince George townhouse.

She’s raising four special-needs kids under the age of 12, all the offspring of parents with drug problems, and she’s doing it on her own dime, not depending on government handouts to pay the bills.

She feeds and clothes the kids, makes sure they get their homework done and pays for their medications, their field trips and their holidays, living on her pensions and her savings from years of running a day care, money she thought would be set aside for her retirement.

“The children now that are coming to me are hurt,” said Mckeand. “The grandchildren were already impacted, but the drug addiction in my two children wasn’t as profound.

“So as the years pass that drug addiction and the mental illness that goes with it (spawned more severe developmental consequences). When they’re pregnant they don’t take care of the babies properly and when the kids are born they aren’t taken care of properly. So you get this little human that’s already impacted.

“Now I’ve got a bunch of kids with a whole plethora of issues and you can’t throw them on the government’s back.”

Mckeand and her ex-husband Julian share their house with their grandson, Jordan and his fiancée Madison, and their four great-grandchildren - 11-year-old Eva, who is autistic, nine-year-old Jaymee, eight-year-old Michael and six-year-old Terra, all born with disabilities caused by prenatal exposure to alcohol and/or drugs.

and Julian sold her sports car, their truck, their fifth-wheel trailer, quads and motorbikes.

Born in Vancouver in 1947 at the start of the baby boom, Heather was second in a line of five kids Marge and Lou Lyster brought into the world.

“After the war, when the whole country was alive with hope and all that, that was my first breath, so I was predispositioned to be who I am by that breath,” said Heather.

When Heather was just seven, Marge chose to leave the family on the farm near Courtenay and moved to nearby Campbell River. She stayed in touch with her kids regularly but they were raised by their father.

After she left, Heather took on the responsibility of looking after four brothers and sisters. It was a scary environment for her sometimes to try to replace having their mom around, especially at mealtime, and she had to grow up in a hurry.

She went on to have three kids of her own with her ex-husband Gordie before

they split up. Heather took custody of her younger daughters, Janice and Denise, while Gordie raised their oldest, Coreen, who left to be with her dad when she was seven.

Heather worked two jobs in Courtenay to stay on top of the bills and was able to do that without having to lean on her parents for money. She worked as a waitress, a cleaner, auto detailer and took on an assortment of other menial jobs just to keep their heads above water.

Heather moved with her two girls to Edmonton, where her brother lived, and got a job with Blue Heron Support Services Association, working with mentally challenged children and adults with developmental disabilities and brain injuries. Before long, she had another mouth to feed when she took custody of her first grandchild, Maggie, whose mother Coreen was unable to care for her. Rather than see her institutionalized, Heather stepped up to take her in.

Denise, Heather’s youngest daughter, idolized Coreen and went to live with her, and during that time she also developed

a drug addiction which she carried into motherhood. Her kids were about to be taken into care by the ministry when Heather opened her home in Swan Hills, Alta., to her other two grandkids.

Already running a day care, Heather and her second husband Julian became legal guardians to Coreen’s children Maggie, Curtis, Stephanie and Jordan, as well as Denise’s kids, Jayleen and James.

When Julian got a job with Carrier Lumber 30 years ago they moved from Alberta to Prince George. Julian agreed to provide for the family, working at his job while Heather stayed at home to raise the kids, and it worked.

Although Julian and Heather are legally separated, they remain good friends and are still living together.

Denise got her life back on track and quit using drugs and was able to take back her two children, who lived with her until they became adults. James and his partner were into drugs and unable to look after their three kids, all under the age of three, all born with disabilities.

After some more soul-searching, Heather applied through the courts to become their legal guardian and for the past six years they’ve been living with her.

Heather’s grandson Jordan, Coreen’s oldest, was born three months premature with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. He was deaf, blind in one eye and had paralysis on one side. Heather worked with him constantly as a baby, pressing his legs up into his chest until he could sit and crawl on his own. His eyesight remains impaired but he had surgery at BC Children’s Hospital to restore his hearing.

Now 26, Heather refers to Jordan as ‘my hero.” Despite his cognitive issues he races stock cars and holds down a fulltime job. He’s overcome his disabilities to become a role model for his nieces and nephews in their Prince George house.

Heather is proud of the fact all her great-grandchildren, despite their disabilities, are keeping up with the classroom peers, all working at par with the other students academically in their respective grades.

“They’re beautiful children and they aren’t resentful, they don’t feel sorry for themselves,” she said. “My children are really connected to me. They’re really good kids.”

Vet faces lengthy processs to obtain B.C. licence TED CLARKE Citizen staff

In her native Thailand, veterinarian Prangthip Piandee wore several hats in her job taking charge of the health of sick or injured animals.

She was also the secretary who booked appointments, the lab technician who tested tissue samples, the pharmacist who dispensed medication and the cleaner who kept the place spic and span.

“In a hospital or clinic in Thailand it’s just you and one assistant and you do everything, we deal with everything by ourselves, compared to here, where you have a vet tech, a vet assistant, a receptionist – it’s a support team, which is very good,” said Piandee.

“I feel like I have a lot of people that support you and I don’t get work overload like it used to be in Thailand.

When the doctor has to do everything it’s burnout sometimes.”

Piandee, a 31-year-old native of Sisaket, Thailand, was working in a Kelowna clinic as a veterinary technician when she met Matthew Cameron, a 37-year-old accountant-turned-carpenter with roots in Prince George, and he brought her back to his hometown when he took a job at Omineca Fabricating.

Since June, Piandee has been working as a vet assistant at Prince George Veterinary Hospital. She says veterinary skills are the same no matter what part of the world a doctor is working in. The only real differences are related to climate. The diseases animals contract in a tropical area are different from that of a cold-winter climate.

Thailand has nine veterinary colleges and produces about 1,000 graduates annually, compared to Canada, which has five schools that produce 350 graduates.

There’s a Canada-wide shortage of vets and that’s especially felt in Prince George, which does not have enough doctors to offer 24/7 emergency service.

Pet owners not already attached to a vet clinic are unable to get their pets’ health needs addressed because most veterinarians in the city are not taking new patients. The Prince George Humane Society has a backlog of surrendered animals that need to be spayed and neutered but the waitlist is months long due to the scarcity of doctors.

Piandee has friends practicing in Thailand who want to come to Canada but have no way to fast-track the paperwork needed for permanent residency. She’s hopeful the federal government will introduce a visa work program specifically geared toward veterinarians that would allow those doctors to start the process of obtaining Canadian licenses as soon as they arrive.

“A lot of them want to come up here but it’s so hard,” she said. “How can you stay here when it takes two or three years to become a vet again? It’s hard to bring everyone up here because the visa-immigration thing makes it difficult.”

She can’t stress enough to her Thai friends the importance of having proficiency in English.

“It’s a professional job and you have to talk to your clients and your co-workers,” Piandee said. “You need to have excellent communication skills and Thai people or foreign people if they want to work in Canada or the United States have to have that. Communication is the most important thing.”

Piandee practiced for two years in Bangkok after graduating university in 2017.

Two years ago, she married a Kelowna man and came over from Thailand. Their marriage gave her permanent residency status, which has allowed her to pursue the tests needed to prove her veterinary competency.

Piandee passed her English test but failed the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association National Examining Board theory exam she wrote a few weeks ago in Winnipeg. She plans to re-take the test after the mandatory four-month wait period.

By next summer, she hopes to take the North American Veterinary Licensing Exam. There are only 18 seats for the hands-on exam in Saskatoon, which is offered

only for a two-week period in April and during a fourweek window from November-December.

To circumvent the usual two- or three-year wait list just to get a seat for that test, she plans to go to the United States -- either Mississippi or Las Vegas -- where there is no wait.

The next step would be the preliminary surgical assessment and then she would have to pass a clinical proficiency test. The entire recertification process will cost her about $12,000.

She’s hoping by this time next year she will have her Canadian credentials. PG Veterinary Clinic has eight doctors on staff and enough fur-bearing customers to keep Piandee busy.

“It would be lovely to get her up and running, we’ve been trying to recruit doctors non-stop for I don’t know how many years, and we don’t get applicants,” said PG Vet office manager Heather Hannan. “People don’t want to come to this area, they want to go to the big cities where there are emergency centres and things like that.

It’s quite delightful to have somebody apply and we just need to get her through the process.”

Olga Elsie Rosenke, 95 of Clive, Aberta passed away on December 24, 2023, after a short illness.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Marie, a beloved mother, grandmother and friend. Marie left us on December 17th at 94 years old to reunite with the love of her life Stanley. Her infectious smile filled every room she entered, bringing joy to all around her, and for this there will be so many that will miss her. Sweet Marie’s memory will live on with all who knew her and remind us to embrace life with kindness, warmth and love. Our family would like to express their sincerest gratitude to the angels at Parkside for everything throughout the years.

Elizabeth (Betty Anne) Davis

Elizabeth (Betty Anne) passed at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops after battling an infection. She was born in Shaunavon Sask. to teacher parents Russell and Blanche Johnston. In 1945 the family relocated to a homestead at Miworth near Prince George B.C.. Elizabeth excelled at learning and graduated with honours in her early teens. University was not economically feasible so she worked in a clothing store and at a bank, before finding her niche in prehospital care.

City employee Chuck Cadell and his partner Bob Boray took over ambulance service from the Prince George Fire Dept. in the 60’s and Chuck enticed Elizabeth and Herman Penner to work for him. Tragically, while on a call with Elizabeth, Mr. Cadell collapsed and passed away at the hospital after a call.

Elizabeth took the ball and ran with it setting up the Prince George Ambulance with Herman as a homebased business, run in conjunction with raising 5 children.

In 1974 the B.C. Government standardized ambulance service creating the BCAS (British Columbia Ambulance Service). Private operators were given opportunities in the new commission. Elizabeth (Penner) Davis was hired to set up a station in P.G. She was then tasked with the set up and management of the Northern portion of B.C., encompassing 100 Mile House to Bella Coola, North to Alaska including Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlottes) and east to Alberta including Valemount. She set up 42 stations in this region. Once the north was established she was transferred to the Lower Mainland where she helped manage all stations in that region.

Looking for a spot to retire with her husband Keith Hale, they found their spot in Talana Bay (Scotch Creek) and purchased their property. Keith, a paramedic, transferred to Kamloops to start on their home. She then transferred to Kamloops as the coordinator of support services managing and assisting all of the stations in the interior, Kootenays and Okanagan districts.

In 1998 she turned 65 and due to mandatory retirement, left BCAS. They moved into their Talana Bay home in 1992.

Elizabeth was excellent at everything she did and would not back down from anything. Some of her passions and accomplishments included: horse racing, Queen Aurora of the Evergreens, one of the first female Industrial First Aid Instructors, setting up, coaching and managing competitions, softball (backcatcher), Provincial Ladies Champions, Chase Curling Club Nifty Fifty participant, quilting, sewing, gardening, and managing her husband Keith.

While some were taken aback when first encountering her take charge attitude, she was highly thought of by those she worked with in any capacity.

Elizabeth was predeceased by her parents, brother Keith, son baby Herman, cousin Albert Gollem, and first husband John Hretchka. She is survived by her sisters Dorothy (Seiter), Barbara (Robb), brother Donald Johnston, cousins Edward and George Gollem, children Desiree (Towle), Catanna (Dale) Glennen, Russell (Jan) Penner, Lavinia (Paul) Reid and Wade (Marianna) Penner, with step-daughters Candace Hale, and Leslie Florell. Her grandchildren number 15 and her great-grandchildren 17 and numerous nieces and nephews.

The lake house was often very full and Elizabeth delighted in having family and friends to entertain. She touched many lives and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

An internment service will be held in Prince George in Spring 2024, with plans for a Celebration of Life at her home in Talana Bay in Summer 2024.

A huge thank you to the staff of 6North, RIH, and a special thanks to Dr. S. Montgomery and Dr. L. McIver.

Elfie (Elfriede) Georgina Wolf (nee Greib) was born June 16th, 1946 in Schalchen, Austria. She passed away December 18th 2022 in Koblenz Germany fortified with the sacraments of the Catholic Church, in the presence of her sisters Ulrike and Roswita and her goddaughter Angelica. After a funeral Mass, Elfie was laid to rest beside her husband in Koblenz, Germany.

A Mass of memorial was held in Canada on December 30th, 2023 at 10:30 am in Sacred Heart Cathedral, Prince George, BC. Elfie was predeceased by her loving husband Willy Wolf, her sister in law Margaret Greib, a daughter and two prematurely born babies, her parents Georg & Petronella Greib, her parents-inlaw Florian & Dorothea Wolf and brother-in-law Matthias Werner Wolf.

She is survived by her siblings: Kunibert Greib, Ingrid & Rudolf Bernath, Roswita & Herbert Auracher, Georg Greib & Anna, Ulrike & Reiner Eichenberg, Hans-Walter & Ute Wolf, and numerous nephews, nieces & their families, and her Godchildren: Angelica LeFebvre, Jacob LeFebvre & family.

CHRISTY, Sylvia Dorothy (nee WARE) peacefully passed away on November 18th, 2023 at Gateway Lodge in Prince George, BC. Sylvia went to be with the Lord at the age of 83.

Sylvia was born in Fort Ware, BC on July 1, 1940, to James and Ada Ware. She married her late husband Albert Christy in Prince George, BC and they had five children together. Sylvia was the proud mother of six and grandmother to eight grandchildren. Sylvia was affectionately known as Sally to her friends and family. Sally was a lifelong bingo player and avid puzzle enthusiast.

She was happy and funny and made friends wherever she went.

Sylvia was survived by her sons Robert Christy (Mary-Ellen) and Leslie Christy.

Her grandchildren; Jennifer Orlinis, Wesley Orlinis, Tina Dalman, Zack Dalman, Brooke Christy, Shaun Christy and Nicole Christy. Her sisters Janet Colville and Shirley Ware. Her son in laws Bill Orlinis and Allan Dalman, and daughter in law Donna Christy.

She is predeceased by her husband Albert Christy, sons Albert Christy, and Vernon Christy, daughters Kathy Orlinis and Jean Christy, grandson Brodie Christy, sister Violet Miller and brothers Raymond Ware and Bert Ware. Shortly before her passing her partner Louis Morin passed peacefully at home.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at the Hart Pioneer Centre from 12:30 to 4:30pm, followed by a memorial service in the late spring of 2024.

Breathe new life into old wooden pallets

Bring a touch of the outdoors inside

Old wooden pallets are typically recycled or thrown away once they’ve outlived their usefulness in the shipping industry.

How­ever, repurposing the wood from these pallets has become an increasingly popular trend, especially when it comes to home renovation and interior design.

More and more people have taken to incorporating a bit of nature into the decor of their homes, and with good reason. Plants provide a nice touch of colour, create a re­laxing atmosphere and help to purify the air in your house. So by fashionably using plants and flowers as decorative accesso­ ries, you’ll be able to breathe new life into your home.

MAKING THE MOST OF ITS VERSATILITY The wood from pallets can be used to make almost anything. Common recycled crea­ tions include tables, shelving units, deco­rative objects, wood flooring, garden structures, temporary shelters and tree houses for children. Depending on your needs, the pallet can be stripped of its individual boards or used as a whole. What’s more, the wood from pallets can be painted, stai­ned or varnished.

A MATERIAL THAT’S OFTEN FREE Big industrial com­panies and hardware stores will fre­q uently throw their wood pallets away or leave them near recycling con­tainers. So with a little resourcefulness, you’ll be able to supply yourself with building materials free of charge. If this isn’t an option, you can always negotiate a fair price with your local hardware store.

NO LIMITATIONS You’re only limited by your creativity when it comes to upcycling wooden pallets. They can be sawed, glued, nailed, screwed, stapled, sanded, framed, water-treated and burned — by design, of course. They style well with various types of wood, different metals and other building materials. And with little cost and effort, you can give old wooden pallets a new lease on life while upgrading your home decor.

Making the inside of your home come to life couldn’t be easier. Simply arrange a clus­ter of assorted plants along a stretch of wall — in your living room or bathroom,

for example — that has a window. Position a low and sturdy table beneath the window and garnish it with an array of exotic plants varying in size and species. You can also place your flora on nested tables or shelves at different levels to create a stunning visual effect.

No indoor garden would be complete without kokedema. A Japanese variant of the bonsai, this art form involves wrapping your plant’s roots in soil, moss and string.

By hanging these charming little gardens from your ceiling, you’ll be able to create a spectacular tableau of greenery virtually anywhere in your home.

Keep in mind that certain plants don’t get along well with others when planning the layout of your indoor garden. You can always consult a horticultura­list if you’re having trouble de­ciding on which plants to use.

SOME GOOD CHOICES The chlorophytum (or spider plant), ficus, ivy, bowstring hemp, philodendron and gerbera are all species that require minimal upkeep and have air-purifying qualities. These types of plants help rid the air of carbon dioxide, formaldehyde, benzene and formalin.
