The Prince George Citizen owners partnered with the Hell Yeah Prince George Facebook page founder, to pull an online April Fool’s Day prank on April 1.

Hell Yeah Prince George administrators came up with the prank and asked founder Dave Mothus to reach out to The Prince George Citizen owners Cameron Stolz and Terresa Randall-Stolz.

Mothus suggested the Citizen owners play along with the idea that The Prince George Citizen acquired Hell Yeah Prince George in its 10th year to carry on the tradition of lifting up our community on a social media platform into the future.

“Hell Yeah Prince George chose The Citizen because of its pro-Prince George

stance of the new owners,” Mothus said.

To that end The Citizen and Hell Yeah PG will continue their partnership beyond the April Fool’s joke to offer newspaper readers the opportunity to see more stories that have only been available online and for Hell Yeah to promote pro-Prince George stories featured in the Prince George Citizen.

“As we have seen in the past when there is a fundraiser in the community, there is always a dramatic response to the cause when the story is published in The Citizen and the expectation is the stories sent to us by Hell Yeah Prince George will gain more traction throughout the community,” Stolz said.

Prince George man sentenced for child pornography charges TOM SUMMER Local Journalism Initiative

A Prince George man has been sentenced for his role in creating and distributing child pornography, and sexual interference.

Shawn Robert Dick, 56, was found guilty at trial, and was sentenced on March 27 in Prince George Supreme Court to six years in jail for sexual interference.

Another 36 months in jail was given for making child pornography, 36 months in jail for distributing child pornography, and 12 months in jail for possessing child

pornography. In total, 1,513 days in custody remain to be served, with a pretrial custody credit of 1,757 days; or just over four years.

The charges of making, distributing, and possessing child pornography were consecutive to the charge of sexual interference, but concurrent with each other.

A 10-year mandatory firearms ban was also imposed, along with a DNA order.

Dick will be registered as a sex offender for the next 20 years, and is banned from attending public parks or swimming areas where persons under the age of 16 are

Dick was co-accused with 45-yearold Jennifer Kathleen Dahl, who was sentenced to nine and a half years in prison for her involvement.

“The motivation of these offences was the sexual pleasure of the offender and Ms. Dahl,” noted Justice Ronald Tindale during Dick’s sentencing.

The incident took place in June 2019 in Prince George, and Dick was charged in July 2019, after suspicions were reported to police.

Notice of Intention to Provide Assistance Pursuant to Section 24 of the Community Charter the Regional District of FraserFort George (the “Regional District”) Board of Directors proposes to provide assistance under a loan agreement to the Fraser Fort George Museum Society (Registration No. S0009084), (the “Society”), having a registered address at Box 1779, Prince George, BC, V2L 4V7.

Two men in Prince George sentenced for drug trafficking TOM SUMMER Local Journalism Initiative

Sentencing has concluded for two men found guilty of trafficking-related charges stemming from a police raid on a Prince George apartment in July 2019.

Marshall Luther Cade, born 1994, and John Jacob Ceal, born 1990, were given jail sentences on March 22 in Prince George Supreme Court, with Cade receiving 38 months and Ceal receiving 27 months.

Orders were also sought against the pair, including a mandatory prohibited and restricted firearms ban

for life, as well as a 10-year prohibition for non-prohibited and non-restricted firearms, a DNA order, and an order forfeiting all cash and items, with the exception of Cade’s cell phone.

The two men had been running a dial-a-dope operation with Shawn Brian Omark Whaling, born 1992, with 23 visits and 19 transactions in Prince George, using vehicles driven by Ceal and Whaling.

Justice David Crerar noted Cade expressed no remorse for his actions, a contrast to Ceal, who admitted both his involvement in the drug trade and key points in the charges brought against him.

“In contrast to Mr. Ceal, Mr. Cade continues to wholly deny that he ever committed a crime. He shows no remorse and no insight; he can thus show no steps towards rehabilitation; or reassure the Court that he poses no further threat to offend,” wrote Crerar. “He blames everyone but himself for his crime and his present circumstances. His assurances of vocational intentions, and his job history since arrest, are vague.”

Both committed their offences purely for commercial gain, explained Crerar, and have shown no tangible steps in rehabilitation.

“Neither are addicts; neither suffers from a diagnosed mental illness. The drugs found in and outside the apartment were voluminous and valuable; the apartment evidenced an active and organized operation for the packaging and distribution of drugs. They did not traffick to feed or finance their own addictions, but were rather motivated by pure commercial gain,” notes the ruling.

“Neither are employed, and apart from not being charged with other crimes since their arrest, neither can display any tangible steps to turn their lives around and reassure the Court that they will not reoffend, based on a proven path of employment and responsible citizenship,” Crerar added.

Cade was found guilty of three charges: unlawfully possessing 186 grams of cocaine, 135 grams of methamphetamine, and 11 grams of fentanyl for the purpose of trafficking. The drugs were packaged in bulk and individual consumption baggies with distinctive patterns denoting volume, with a street value of between $16,300 and $23,600.

Ceal was found guilty of one charge: unlawfully possessing 286 grams of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. The drugs had a street value of between $18,000 and $25,000.

The drugs were discovered when RCMP raided a three-bedroom apartment, with police seizing a cellphone and cash. Cade leapt from a window in an escape attempt, injuring his ankle; $3,940 was found lying in the grass around him. Ceal was then found in one of the bedrooms and also arrested. $1,182 in cash was seized from Cade’s person and another $2,245 in cash was found throughout the apartment.

A search warrant was also executed on Whaling’s 200-block North Ospika Boulevard home, and police seized 61 grams of cocaine, $33,200 in cash and drug trafficking paraphernalia.

Whaling later pled guilty to possessing the cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, and received a non-custodial sentence from the Indigenous Criminal Sentencing Court.

“We have no details of Mr Whaling’s circumstances, or what was presented in the Indigenous Sentencing Court, beyond his guilty plea. We do not know what steps he has taken towards rehabilitation, his expressions of remorse, the effects of colonialism and assimilation on his path to criminal activity, his personal difficulties, or his family supports.

BC Assembly of First Nations supports fight against residential school denialism TOM SUMMER Local Journalism Initiative

The BC Assembly of First Nations (BCAFN) is congratulating the Lhtako Dene Nation and the City of Quesnel for their work fighting against Residential School denialism, commending them in a press release.

In 2021, Tkemlúps te Secwépemc brought forward evidence of unmarked graves at the site of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School, explains the release, noting First Nations across Canada found approximately 1,900 unmarked graves at 16 other former residential schools.

“When it came to light that the wife of Quesnel’s mayor was distributing denialist literature, the council unanimously denounced the denialist book and supported the findings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission,” states the release.

“Residential schools killed thousands of Indigenous children, which is a hard pill to swallow for many non-Indigenous Canadians who continue to believe in national myths of fairness and justice,” said Regional Chief Terry Teegee. “But the Church’s own records confirm thousands of children never went home from these so-called schools.”

“This is part of the history of this country, and denying these facts is extremely harmful to the progress we are making towards reconciliation,” he continued.

According to the release, evidence was found by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of 3,213 deaths of children in residential school records, with the number “unlikely to be a full accounting due to poor record keeping and many records not surviving”.

“Residential school denialism needs to be called out when we see it. This is not a matter of opinion or free speech; it is hateful, harmful, and cannot be tolerated by Canadian society,” added Teegee.

“It is incumbent on our allies among non-Indigenous Canadians to speak up when they are confronted by this poison. The BCAFN applauds the work of the Lhtako Dene Nation and the city of Quesnel in stamping out denialism when confronted by it,” he concluded.

The release further notes that denialists focus on errors in reporting or claim students benefited from residential schools, attempting to create doubt about the reality of harms committed against Indigenous people by the Residential School system.

Renewing the stormwater system is essential to prevent flooding, erosion, sedimentation/degradation of water quality and negative impact on aquatic life.

The Loan Authorization Bylaw is for two million five hundred and fifty thousand dollars. ($2,550,000). The loan agreement with the Municipal Finance Authority (MFA) will be for a term no longer than twenty (20) years. The annual debt servicing costs for borrowing the full amount is estimated to be two hundred and fifteen thousand nine hundred and thirty eight dollars ($215,938.00) and would result in 0.16% of future tax levy increases.

The approved projects from the 2024 – 2028 Capital Financial Plan that will be part of the stormwater system renewal program will include, but not limited to, stormwater green infrastructure, ponds, outfalls, storm mains, culverts, armoring, recharge chambers, catch basins, manholes, service connections, flood pumps, oil grit separators, ditch renewal, electrical, SCADA, communications, property acquisitions and necessary encumbrances.

RESIDENTS AND NON-RESIDENT PROPERTY ELECTORS: In order to sign an Elector Response Form, a person must either be a resident elector or a non-resident property elector of the City of Prince George. For the purposes of the Alternative Approval Process, an elector is a person who meets the qualifications referred to in section 65 or section 66 of the Local Government Act if assent of the electors were sought, either as a resident elector or non-resident property elector.

ELECTOR RESPONSE FORM An Elector Response Form must be in the form approved by the Council of the City of Prince George, or an accurate copy of the form such as a photocopy. Elector Response Forms are available on the 1st Floor or the 5th Floor of Prince George City Hall, 1100 Patricia Boulevard, Prince George, BC, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., on Monday to Friday, excluding statutory holidays. Elector Response Forms are also available on the City’s website: www.princegeorge.ca/aap.

The deadline for submitting an Elector Response Form is 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14, 2024.

What can Prince George learn from the World Happiness Report?

R

ecently the “2024 World Happiness Report” was issued by the World Population Review Organization.

The purpose of this annual report is to review the measuring and understanding of well-being, and to track the quality of lives as they are being lived in 150 countries.

Northern European countries once again dominated the top of the happiness rankings, reflecting strong social support systems, quality of life, and high standards of living.

But one country stands out amongst the top five happiest countries. That country is the State of Israel which, for the sixth year in a row, has been ranked as one of the top 10 happiest countries, despite the conflict taking place there.

In 2024, Canada ranked as number 15. The USA? Number 23, the first time ever dropping out of the top 20 list.

When you read the Under 30 survey results in the report, Israeli young adults scored the number two position. Canada’s young adults? Spot number 58. Could it be that in Israel, the main task of educators of those from ages 6 to

12 is to teach children to communicate with each other, instill a love of learning and unleash the creative potential of each individual?

While in Canada, often our young people’s lives are inundated with messaging and social media predicting that their future is all doom and gloom?

There needs to be funding for elementary school teachers to bus their students to our fantastic public library at least once per month. Access to books, information, youth programs, intellectual pursuits and knowledge are important key factors for young people to grow into being emotionally

I am confident that with a real, collective effort amongst our community to expand the enrichment options for our children, we will come to see a drop in the number of young adults with mental and emotional health problems.

I believe this will also lead to less substance misuse and addiction as our children become young adults.

Here at home in Prince George, my perception is that many young people are feeling less and less content and are experiencing ever-increasing anxiety and uncertainty about their future.

What are some things that we can focus on here that can help address this?

I think continuing to invest in arts, culture and educational enrichment is the best path forward.

I also believe strongly in children and youth being supported to participate in art, music, dance, creative writing, or acting classes.

These experiences do wonders for improving the expression and communication skills of young people, skills they cannot develop through spending an excessive amount of time on social media.

As well, these activities provide a tremendous boost to dignity,

confidence, and self-esteem. Arts activities are the perfect complement to sporting activities aiding in the development of healthy bodies with a healthy mind and spirit.

I am confident that with a real, collective effort amongst our community to expand the enrichment options for our children, we will come to see a drop in the number of young adults with mental and emotional health problems. I believe this will also lead to less substance misuse and addiction as our children become young adults.

Although we may not be able to move Canada up the Happiest Countries rankings, we can improve the happiness of our community. It starts by investing in our children.

When those in public office are next asking for our feedback for what our community needs, we should be asking for a better future for our children. We should be asking them to invest in youth programs and opportunities that will improve their quality of life and improve our community’s happiness.

When Kellie Young left Prince George at 17 years old, she swore she’d never live here again.

Fast forward to 2016 as Young picked up her Niche Clothing & Trading Co. in Jasper, after living there for 30 years and brought the store into the heart of downtown Prince George.

“Where else would I go?” was Young’s answer to the obvious question of why downtown?

“When I was growing up, downtown was really fun,” Young said. “We’d come downtown and it was a different ball of wax. On Third Avenue it was The Bay, you’d go down there and buy yourself a record and across the street was The Northern Hardware and Northern Ski and in that lineup was Sweet 16 – all these stores.”

Young said she looked everywhere in town for a space that would best suit her eclectic home décor and clothing store located at 1388 Fifth Avenue.

“Even as a kid I liked design,” Young said. “Home décor and different clothing.

I just like different things and I always

say it’s Halloween every day.”

Dress however you’d like, it’s part of how people express themselves, she added.

Young said she likes her downtown location.

“It’s off the beaten path a bit - just a block away really (from Specialty Avenue – Fourth Avenue),” Young added.

“I like this space and I like my landlord.

Everywhere else I looked at I just didn’t want to be there. My store doesn’t lend itself to being in a mall, or a strip mall. So what do you do?”

People come to Niche as their shopping destination.

“And I think that’s how a lot of people tend to shop because there has been no good downtown in forever,” Young said.

“Northern Hardware was a destination.

People weren’t wandering downtown.

They’d come downtown to shop at the Northern. I think once people find you and enjoy the store they keep coming back.”

Niche has parking right out front so it’s a short distance to the front door, for those who are reluctant to be downtown.

There have been issues with the unhoused but she treats every customer the same. As soon as someone steps into

And when she finds people hanging out in her back alley where she parks, she gives a friendly greeting and often a cup of coffee or soup is offered to those who are in need.

It’s all part of building community, she added.

When it comes to the most popular items sold in the store, Young said her clothing items are the best sellers.

“In the clothing lines I carry there are a lot of natural fibres and a lot of unique styles with a bit of a boho twist and it suits women from 30 to dead. We’ve got something for everyone.”

“With home décor, the furniture, it comes in cycles,” Young said. “Sometimes I’ll sell 10 quilts in a week and then I don’t do anything in forever it seems and then I can sell four pieces of furniture in a week and then nothing for a while. Everything goes in cycles and I think it’s not just here but everywhere.”

Young considers the store her second home.

“So when people come in it’s like ‘hey, how you doin’?’, bring your coffee, come hang out, sit on the couch in the back,” Young said.

“I want it to be a friendly atmosphere.

I’ve had women meet each other and become friends here just from trying on stuff. And I love that.”

English remains biggest challenge facing displaced Ukrainians in Prince George TED CLARKE Citizen staff

In the two years since the RussoUkrainian War began, Prince George Share Hope has helped 347 displaced Ukrainians from 136 families get settled in northern B.C. Canada’s open-door policy that has provided settlement supports, exemptions and work visas for Ukrainian refugees is coming to an end with the expiry of the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET) agreement on Saturday.

Share Hope and the people behind the volunteer organization fully expect that will bring the flow of new arrivals from Ukraine to a virtual standstill. That has shifted the focus of the organization away from finding new arrivals housing and furnishings, schools, daycares and medical services, to helping those who already here learn English, find jobs and receive mental health support.

“We’ve applied to grants to other

agencies and we hope we are successful and that’s how we plan to continue to help these folks,” Dick Mynen, Share Hope fundraising/donations director, said. He is part of a delegation that obtained city council’s approval to seek more funding to pay for language services and hire professional employment services.

“The need is overwhelming,” he added.

“We recognize we have 300 people we still need to help. Their journey is not over just because they came here and we helped them get an apartment, we need to help them navigate their new life here.”

Many of the more recent arrivals to Prince George are from eastern Ukraine, where English is less commonly spoken and they face larger hurdles learning the language, especially the older generation.

The language barrier has affected their ability to find jobs that match their training and experience.

“We’ve got people who are finding it really challenging to find a job,” Mynen said. “They’re older and learning English is slower and more difficult. Especially

for the guys sometimes, they just want to work so hard and they’re focusing on the job and not the need to learn English.

In Europe, you can get a job as a foreign-speaking person much easier than in Prince George.”

More English teachers are required, especially considering language classes at the College of New Caledonia and Immigrant and Multicultural Services Society are not available in the summer months.

Mynen said finding an employment coordinator to work with the Ukrainians will help them navigate the system and find jobs sooner. He said WorkBC has been helpful but due to high demand clients are having to wait a full month to get help from an employment agency.

Share Hope is working with Oasis Settlement Services to find more English teachers and provide orientation classes to newcomers that will smooth the adjustment to Canadian life. The Ukrainians that are here are safe from the war but live with the fear of what’s happening to their country and loved ones they left behind as the war continues and that creates the need for mental health supports that are also in short supply.

Some of the Ukrainian families are still planning on bringing relatives to the city but it will be harder for those individuals to make a life for themselves with CUAET coming to an end. As of Monday, visits to Canada will be limited to six months and

work permits won’t be received at the point of entry and can only be obtained if they meet general requirements.

In February there were 19 new arrivals to the city and 30 are expected before the end of March. As of March 12 there were still 268 displaced Ukrainians in the city and 306 across north central B.C. Of the 42 who left Prince George, 34 moved to other Canadian cities and just eight returned to Ukraine.

In 2023, Share Hope provided monthly financial support to 13 families, averaging $1,500 per month per family.

“We might have to help them get an apartment once in a while, but not to the degree that we’ve been doing it,” Eva Gillis, Share Hope chair, said. “The people we’ve asked to be their hosts to help them settle, those people are going to move to helping the ones that have been here for a while. My energy has now changed to helping the ones that are here continue to learn English and help them with the mental health side of things and just create events to keep them together.”

Last summer, Share Hope and the Catholic church sponsored 180 Ukrainians to come to Sowchea Bay on Stuart Lake near Fort St. James for an overnight camp. A barbecue at the Central BC Railway and Forestry Museum in September was also well-attended and Gillis said Share Hope will continue to look for other events to help them celebrate their culture.

Absent detailed evidence in this regard, the passing reference to his sentence is of limited utility to the present exercise,” Crerar writes.

In a Gladue report provided to court, it’s noted Ceal admitted the apartment served as a ‘trap house’ for packaging, distributing, and selling drugs. Multiple scales, measuring cups, and other drug measuring and packaging materials were found in the residence, along with baggies of various sizes, with markings corresponding with drug volumes.

“I am satisfied that the totality of the evidence before the Court establishes that these offenders, along with Mr. Whaling, were not mere street-level vendors, but together carried out an organized and concerted drug packaging and distribution operation. The execution of the search warrant interrupted an active packaging session in Mr. Ceal’s apartment,” noted Crerar.

The Gladue report also notes Ceal has Métis ancestry, but Crerar said it had little connection to the crimes committed, with Ceal’s father and Indigenous grandmother becoming estranged - something that occurs within many families, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, rather than an impact of colonialism.

“As best as one can discern from the report, other members of Mr. Ceal’s family have led socially responsible lives,” noted Crerar. “Specifically,

there is little if any connection between Mr. Ceal’s disconnection from his Métis culture and his involvement with the drug trade.”

It’s also noted that Cade identifies as Black, and is the son of a white mother and a Black father. An Impact of Race and Culture Assessment (IRCA) was provided to the court, with Cade also claiming he may have Indigenous heritage, and that he experienced racism which pushed him to make unhealthy choices and connections.

“People who identified as white thought his complexion was excessively dark, while people of African descent thought it was too light, which led to feelings of loneliness and isolation,” notes the assessment, referenced by Crerar.

The assessment mentions that after the divorce of his parents, Cade become estranged from his father, with a supplemental assessment letter indicating the estrangement was due to his father’s mental illness.

“That said, as with Mr. Ceal, there is little evidence linking culture or race in his upbringing with his presence before the Court, either as a Black Canadian, or in respect of his professed Indigenous heritage. The difficult childhood experienced by Mr. Cade as described in the IRCA flows more from poverty and the absence of his father than from direct or systemic racism,” Crerar wrote.

Cougars favoured to oust Spokane Chiefs in WHL first-round matchup

The road to the Ed Chynoweth Cup started Friday at CN Centre.

Fresh from clinching the WHL Western Conference season title, the Prince George Cougars began a quest for their first-ever league championship with a convincing 6-1 win over the Spokane Chiefs in Game 1, then followed that Saturday with a 7-4 triumph in Game 2.

After a record-setting season the Cougars have raised the city’s hockey temperature.

Both games were nearly sold out with fans decked out to form a sea of white and tickets to get through the CN Centre gates remain hot commodities for the remainder of the best-of-seven series or Round 2, whichever comes first.

No other Prince George team broke the WHL’s 100-point barrier like this year’s edition did while winning the West. After an unprecedented 49 wins in

68 games, the Cougars aim to prove they can carry the momentum needed to survive the two-month postseason and win their way into the Memorial Cup. Like most of the other Cougar veterans, Carlin Dezainde has 14 games of playoff experience on his resume, built over two years. But this year is different.

His team is built to go deep into the postseason and he fully expects to go the full four rounds this spring.

“We’re super excited, we’ve worked hard all year for something like this and it’s our favourite time of year,” said the 19-year-old Calgary native. “Everything ramps up in the playoffs, the pace, the physicality, guys get hurt. It’s so hard to explain but it’s so much more than what regular season is and everyone’s bringing their best every night. Everyone wants to win so bad and you can’t afford to take nights off, especially in the playoffs.”

The Cougars scored more goals (316) and gave up fewer (187) than in of their previous 29 years in Prince George. Six

players produced at better than a pointper-game pace and Dezainde would likely have been the seventh had he not missed 17 games with a shoulder injury.

He still managed to score 25 goals and 56 points in 51 games, more than doubling his production from last season.

Dezainde is playing the left side on a line with Riley Heidt and right winger Koehn Ziemmer and that unit is sharing power-play duty with the line of Zac Funk-Ondrej Becher-Terik Parsacak.

Ziemmer appears to be back in game form after missing two-thirds of the season with an ankle injury. He had two assists Saturday and with the 80-assist man Heidt distributing the puck, he and Dezainde are getting their chances.

Last year the Cougars went 10 games deep into the playoffs. They started with a 4-2 series win over the Tri-City Americans and were then swept in four games by the powerhouse Seattle Thunderbirds.

This year, to edge Portland as

conference champions, it took a 17-0-1-1 run to lock up first place. If the Cougars keep winning, they will start each series at home for at least the first three rounds.

“It’s huge, and we really focused on that all year,” said Dezainde. “It’s so big to have home-ice advantage, and to play in front of our fans is something we look forward to every night. It’s going to make a big difference for us.”

Chase Pauls was traded from the Lethbridge Hurricanes to the Cougars on Dec. 27 to become the third 20-yearold on the team, with Funk and Hudson Thornton. Pauls says he’s looking forward to a lengthy playoff run, coming off consecutive four-game series losses with Lethbridge in 2022 and 2023.

“Home ice will be huge, I haven’t had home ice in the playoffs in my career so far, so getting the opportunity to start with the first two at home and hopefully come out with two wins is a great opportunity for us,” said Pauls.

“I think (the Cougars’ playoff experience) has shown through the regular season. Everyone knows the playoffs are a different beast and these guys have lots of playoff series under their belts, so hopefully we can take that and roll with it in the playoffs. It comes down to the little details like getting the puck out and getting the puck in and it can end your season if you’re not on top of those things.”

The six-foot-five, 220-pound Pauls filled that need for a big and tough defensive-minded blueliner who knows his job well after four years in the league. He contributed five goals and 11 assists in 34 games since the trade.

“I bring lot of experience for our back end and I’m a hard defensive guy to play against and I’m looking to accept that role and roll with it in the playoffs,” said Pauls, a native of Osler, Sask.

“Spokane gave us a tough time and won two games in the season series but we’ve really elevated our game since then and I like our chances going forward here.”

The Cougars split their games in Spokane, winning 6-3 on Dec. 2 and losing 4-3 Jan. 26. Both games at CN Centre ended in 5-4 overtime scores with the Chiefs winning the first game March 1 followed the next night by a Cougar win.

The Chiefs (30-32-5-1, eighth place) finished 36 points behind the Cougars (49-15-1-3).

“We’re the Number 1 team in the Western Conference, so the expectations are going to be there for us. We worked hard to get that and deserved it,” said Cougars head coach and general manager Mark Lamb.

“When you have a team like that, you can see light at the end of the tunnel; we were pushing for that because we knew we were good enough.”

Like their hosts, the Chiefs pack a high-octane offence that produced 268 goals (fourth in the West). Led by firstteam all-star Berky Catton, who had 54 goals and finished fourth in the scoring race with 116 points, and second-team all-star Conner Roulette (45-63-108), the Chiefs averaged 3.94 goals per game.

“They’re an offensive team that’s going to give us problems, they’ve got two guys with over 100 points and they’ve got a really good power play,” said Lamb.

“They’ve got real good goaltending, with some depth and some good young players and they’re a team to be reckoned with.”

Catton is ranked by NHL Central Scouting ninth among draft-eligible North American skaters and defenceman Will McIsaac (98th) is also on that list. Catton, 18, centres the top scoring line with the 20-year-old Roulette and Shea Van Olm. Both teams have been stopping the puck well. Cowan, 17, was ranked fifth among draft-eligible North American goalies by NHL Central Scouting in the mid-term report and played in 43 of the 68 Chiefs games.

“He’s been really good, giving us chances to win on nights when we’re not on top of our game and that’s what you need from your goalie,” said Chiefs head coach Ryan Smith. “He’s come along nicely over the last couple years.

It takes a little time for some goalies and Prince George has got the same thing with a young guy (Joshua Ravensbergen) who’s come into his own.”

The Cougars have a solid 1-2 punch in net with the rookie Ravensbergen, 17, who went 26-4-1-1 with a 2.46 goalsagainst average, .907 save percentage and six shutouts, while 19-year-old Ty Young has also looked sharp putting up a 23-111-0-2 record with 2.79 GAA and .903 save rate.

The Chiefs blueliners, including McIsaac (6-21-27), Brayden Crompton (9-48-57), Layton Feist (9-29-39) and Saige Weinstein (10-15-25) have been rewarded with points for moving the puck quickly and they won’t be afraid to lead the rushes or jump into the play.

Weinstein, 18, signed Oct 6 as a free agent with the Colorado Avalanche.

Another player to watch is rookie left winger Chase Harrington, a 16-year-old Prince George native and the Chiefs’ eighth-overall pick in the WHL Prospects Draft, who came on strong in the second half and put up 10 of his 22 points in the past two months, playing with Hayden Paupanekis and Cam Parr.

“It’s a special moment for him,” said Smith. “A month ago he got to play in front of his friends and family and now this, the icing on the cake from him, a hometown guy who gets his first taste

of the WHL playoffs. He’s a young guy who’s found his way and has been steadily improving throughout the year.

There won’t be a lot of Chiefs fans in the stands but I’m sure the Harrington clan will be right behind us, so that will be proud moment for him and his family.”

The Cougars ranked No. 2 in the WHL in power-plays (30.1 per cent) and penalty killing (84.3 per cent), as compared to the Chiefs’ 24.3 per cent power play rate (seventh in WHL) while killing off 74.3 per cent

of their penalties (15th).

Depending on results from games in Spokane Tuesday and Wednesday, which happened after the deadline for the print edition of this story, the Cougars will either be coming home to get ready for the next round or they will be playing Game 5 Friday in Spokane.

Prince George would host Game 6 on Monday, April 8, with Game 7 scheduled for Wednesday, April 10.

The second round would begin on Friday, April 12.

east of Giscome but managed to survive.

S. Cregar, an oiler at Eagle Lake Sawmills, was rushed to Prince George on the night freight train to receive treatment from Dr. Carl Ewert for exposure and mild frostbite on both feet.

Cregar apparently was working at night oiling some tractors and got turned around in the bush trying to make his way back.

He told his rescuers that he fell through some ice into a creek and lost his boots, which surely would have been fatal, had he not located a trapper’s cabin for shelter. That’s where a search party found him. *** The late Pete Miller, whom I had the pleasure of working with at the Citizen when I first moved to Prince George in 1999 to become an associate editor at the paper, took this great photo of Bob Marcy using a bright light to check for fractures in a slice of agate.

The photo appeared in the April 3, 1964, edition of the Citizen along with a story about the 18-year-old was planning to share his expertise in cutting and polishing rocks and gems with a six-session night school course in his home workshop.

In the April 4, 1974, edition of the Citizen, readers were told about 25-year-old Jean Topouzis who was sentenced to two years less a day in jail for the crime of selling wholesale marijuana to several local dealers.

Judge W.D. Ferry said the fact Toupouzis had a clean criminal record before this and that marijuana was not a “hard drug” contributed to the sentence. *** Judy Christianson, 17, was letting John McPherson, 21, do the work on the tandem bicycle as they made their way on the streets near Rainbow Park.

Six Prince George Cougars selected as WHL all-stars Citizen staff

Forward – Egor Sidorov (Vitebsk, Belarus) – Saskatoon Blades

Prince George Cougars forwards Zac Funk and Riley Heidt and defenceman Hudson Thornton, as well as McBride native Tanner Molendyk of the Saskatoon Blades, are Western Hockey League firstteam all-stars.

Funk broke the Cougars’ 30-year-old records for points (123) and goals (67). The 20-year-old from Coldstream finished second in the WHL scoring race and was the league leading goalscorer. He put up 227 points in 228 games dating back to his time with the Calgary Hitmen. His plus-56 rating is an all-time high in the franchise’s Prince George history.

Heidt, an 18-year-old from Saskatoon, collected 37 goals and a team-record 80 assists for 117 points to finish third in WHL scoring. Since joining the Cougars after being selected second overall in the 2020 WHL draft, Heidt has 280 points in 221 games as Prince George’s all-time leader.

Thornton, 20, collected 18 goals and 56 assists was fourth among WHL defenceman with 74 points. This season he set Cougar career records for goals (56), assists (140) and points (196) over a span of 207 games.

The three Cougars join forward Tij Iginla (Kelowna Rockets), defenceman Justin Kirpe of the Victoria Royals and Vancouver Giants goalie Brett Mirwald on the B.C. Division first team.

Molendyk, a 19-year-old picked in the first round by the Nashville Predators in the 2023 draft, scored 17 goals and 75 points in just 52 games on defence for the Blades, helping Saskatoon win the Scotty Munro Trophy as regular season champions.

He broke the Blades career mark for points by a defenceman with 214 points in 203 games.

Three Cougars were named Tuesday as BC Division Second-Team All-Stars, including rookies Joshua Ravensbergen and Terik Parascak, and second-year Slovakian defenceman Viliam Kmec.

Ravensbergen, a 17-year-old goalie from North Vancouver, joined the Cougars from the Vancouver

WESTERN HOCKEY LEAGUE

Prince George Cougars Riley Heidt, Zac Funk and Hudson Thornton were named WHL BC Division first-team all-stars.

Northwest Hawks U-18s and in his first WHL season he tied the league’s rookie record with six shutouts while posting a 26-4-1-1 record with a 2.46 goals-against average and .907 save percentage.

Parascak, 17, led all WHL rookies with 105 points, including 43 goals, to finish eighth in league scoring.

The native of Lethbridge was ranked 14th by NHL Central Scouting among North American skaters eligible for the June draft.

The 20-year-old Kmec scored nine times and 25 assists for 34 points and finished with a plus-39 rating. He also played for Slovakia in the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship. In his two seasons since arriving in Canada the native of Kosice collected 80 points in 180 WHL games.

Coaching connection creates series intrigue in Cougars-Chiefs matchup TED CLARKE Citizen staff

Ryan Smith and Mark Lamb have a deep connection as opposing WHL head coaches in the Prince George Cougars-Spokane Chiefs series.

Back in the summer of 2014, while Lamb was in the process putting together the pieces of a championship-calibre Swift Current Broncos team as their head coach and general manager he hired Smith for his first WHL coaching job.

Now Lamb has the reins as Cougars head coach and GM with Smith on the Spokane side, taking aim at the Western Conference regular season champions.

“It’s special to me, Mark was the one who hired me in this league in Swift Current out of junior A almost 10 years ago and I don’t forget about that,” said Smith. “It’s not an easy league to get into, there’s only a certain amount of guys that get jobs and Mark gave me that opportunity and taught me a lot.

“We’ve continued our friendship and I’ve talked to him over the years about coaching and situations and we always have good conversations. He’s honest and a good hockey man and we’ve had a lot of laughs together. I look forward to talking to Mark after the series is over.”

Smith, 50, got into coaching in 2008 in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League while Lamb was in his seventh NHL season as an assistant with the Dallas Stars. Lamb moved to Swift Current the following season and years later hired Smith from the Humboldt Broncos of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.

They worked two seasons together until Lamb left for Tucson in 2016.

“He did a lot of good things (in Swift Current) after I was gone and got more responsibility and they won a championship,” said Lamb. “He’s a smart coach that’s a players’ coach that has a lot to offer.

“He’s a real good guy and I was happy for him to get a head coaching job because that’s what he’s been working for. We won’t be best friends (during the series), that’s for sure.”

settled in Prince George, Smith started a two-year term as associate coach of the Medicine Hat Tigers, then came to Spokane in 2020 during the pandemic.

After two seasons he was bumped up from associate to head coach in July 2022 to replace former Prince George Spruce Kings head coach Adam Maglio.

“Mark got a chance to go to the American League, but he had a big part to do with the (Broncos) team that ended up winning it a couple years later,” said Smith. “He obviously made some trades and drafted some players.

“His teams are always good, always play hard and it’ll be great to go up against him. It’s as good as it gets on their bench, with Mark and Jim (Playfair), and they’re going to have their team ready. They’ve slowly built this

team through drafts, a few smart trades and free agency and that’s how you have to do it. There’s no magic to it, you have to have patience and they have some young guys now that are starting to turn the corner and they’re reaping the benefits of that with a really strong season on top of the league.”

The Cougars finished first in the West, 36 points ahead of the eighthplace Chiefs and Prince George is the odds-on favourite to win the best-ofseven series. Ever since it became apparent they would be matched with the Cougars in playoffs, Smith and his associates, Stefan Legein and Dustin Donaghy have been cooking up a plan to contain an explosive team that averaged 4.65 goals per game, second only to Portland in the WHL.

“They’re very offensive-minded with 100-point scorers up and down their lineup so we’re looking forward to that challenge and believe the series will be won on the defensive side and who can defend better against the other team’s attack,” said Smith.

“We had a good season series against them, we beat them twice and they beat us twice and we were in Prince George a little under a month ago and had two good games against them. I wouldn’t say we’re overconfident, but we know we can play good games against the Cougars.”

We sadly announce the unexpected passing of Brian Lee Earl Mitchell in Prince George on February 28, 2024, at the age of 66, after a life well-lived.

Brian was born in Edmonton, Alberta on February 11, 1958. The family relocated to Abbotsford later that same year, then to Prince George in 1963, where he spent his remaining years, aside from a number of years in Vanderhoof.

He worked for, or contracted out to, various engineering companies where he designed and oversaw constuction of logging roads and bridges.

Brian ‘was an avid fisherman and lived for those moments at the lake, either solo or with friends.

Over the last couple of years he became an enthusiastic gardener, growing more tomatoes and squashes than he could use, which benefitted family and friends.

He is survived and greatly missed by his sister Judy Gibson (Peter), nephews Chris Gibson (Candy), Shawn Gibson (Janine) and niece Kim Gibson. Also great-nephews Matthew, Gavin and Kallen. Brian never had children, but was the best grandpa to his step-grandchildren. He also had many friends, most notably Jack, Dinah, Gina, Dan and Randy. Also missing him is his canine pal, Maggie.

Brian was pre-deceased by his parents Lionel and Grace Mitchell and partner Kerry.

There will be no formal service. Instead a gathering of family and friends will be held later this year.

Ian Leslie (Jr) 1991-2024

With heavy hearts our family announces the passing of Ian Leslie Junior on February 26, 2024 in Toronto just 18 days before his 33rd birthday on March 15th.

Left to mourn his loss and cherish his memory are sisters Genna and Brandy, brother Tanner, father Ian (Annette) and numerous aunties, uncles, nieces and nephews.

He will be deeply missed by his family and friends in Prince George and Bella Coola.

Bernadette Marie Reay (Dette) 1945-2024 Bernadette Marie Reay (Dette), 78, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2024, in Prince George, BC. Dette was born in the Netherlands on June 25, 1945, and immigrated to Canada in 1952 at the age of seven. She married the love of her life Dennis in Victoria, BC on April 25, 1969. They lived together there for three years before relocating to Prince George in September 1972.

Dette is survived by a loving network of family and friends, most notably her husband of 55 years Dennis, her two children: Kertis Reay (Amber) and Cynthia Thomson (Owen), her four grandchildren: Eileen, Danielle, Tyler, and Molly, her two brothers Robert and Rick, her sister Olga, and her sister of the heart Pauline.

Dette was devoted to her family and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. She also loved to travel. In the early years it was family trips to Disneyland and Vancouver Island. In later years trips to Europe, The Caribbean, Hawaii, and her annual trips to Mexico that she looked forward to the most.

Dette enjoyed the personal contacts, and lifetime friendships she made during her career as a hair stylist.

She was an avid reader, loved music and dancing along with numerous hobbies that showcased her creativity.

We would like to thank all the wonderful staff at Rainbow Lodge Adult Daycare, Gateway Lodge, and the Northern Health team #5. Your Positive attitude and kindness reassured our family that Dette was in good hands and well looked after during her visits.

A very Special thank you to Dr. Devan Reddy. We are extremely lucky to have a family physician that is so committed, caring, and compassionate.

There will be no service as per Dette’s wishes.

She was dealt a “rough hand” but never let it get her down or let it interfere in her ability to give her all to those she loved with all her heart.

Spring cleaning: are you forgetting to tidy these parts of your home?

To guarantee that this year’s spring cleaning is a success, target these often-neglected areas of your home.

• Refrigerator. Remove everything from the fridge and throw out anything that’s past its expiration date. Take out shelves and drawers, scrub them using warm, soapy water and then replace them. Don’t use bleach or other strong cleaning products that shouldn’t come into contact with food.

• Bedding. Wash your duvets, comforters and pillows in the

washing machine using the gentle cycle. Run the rinse cycle twice to be sure all the soap is removed. If your machine isn’t big enough to fit a comforter or duvet, or you want to do it all at once, head to a local laundromat.

• Walls and ceilings. Remove cobwebs caught in the corners using a vacuum and wash the ceiling with an extendable sponge mop and slightly soapy water.

Continue by cleaning the walls in the same way and giving the baseboards a good scrub.

• Blinds. Dust vinyl, aluminum or wood blinds with a vacuum or a microfibre duster on both sides.

If there’s a buildup of dirt, wash with a sponge and a solution of water and vinegar. Fabric sha­des can be vacuumed or brought to the dry cleaner.

Once you’re done, make it a point to re-clean these areas every few months. This will ensure your home is tidier throughout the year and minimize the amount of work to be done next spring.

TYPE There are four main types of window: 1. Casement windows open with a crank and are highly weatherproof.

• PVC is the most common material for window frames. It’s resistant to moisture and corrosion and requires very little maintenance. However, it must be relatively thick in order to withstand temperature variations, leaving less room for the glass pane.

• Hybrid window frames combine two materials to reap the benefits of each (e.g. PVC for the interior frame and aluminum for the exterior frame).

GLASS Glass used in North American windows is typically double-paned, meaning it contains an air pocket that improves insulation, or even triple-paned for further effectiveness. Gases with superior insulating properties such as argon or krypton may be used instead of air. The glass can also be covered in a low-emissivity (Low-E) metallic film that reduces heat loss.

SPACER AND WEATHERSTRIPPING The spacer contours the glass and ensures that it’s watertight. Choose a non-metallic spacer to minimize condensation. As for weatherstripping, it should be made of a material that’s durable and able to withstand temperature variations — rubber is usually a safe choice.
