The Fundraising Gala Auction Evening is the highlight of the Festival of Trees and is presented by Northland Auto Group on Friday, November 28th. This promises to be a wonderful evening of celebration, sparkle and a few surprises as the major Fundraiser for the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation. Tickets are $150 per person, to what we anticipate will be another sold out premiere event of the Festival.

To celebrate our 21st year, we are presenting a Black Tie Evening, with delicious appetizers and dinner beautifully prepared by Chef Jorges Soares, followed by an exquisite Festival of Trees dessert! As well, Jim Jungers from Stokes Auctions will join us. The evening features a live auction, which includes a great selection of trees and special gift items, plus a few surprises, making for a lively and fun event. Each year, we also feature “Fund-An-Item”, an opportunity to raise money for a much needed piece of equipment for the healthcare in our community. This year we are closing the gap on the final funds needed to fund the Diagnostic Spect CT. We are grateful to our Live Auction guests who donate so generously every year.

Family Day SUNDAY, November 23RD Festival of Trees started in 1994 and has been a “Family Tradition” for many families in Prince George. This year, our 21st year of Festival of Trees, we are “Celebrating an old fashioned Christmas” and are excited to present Family Day Sunday, November 23rd noon to 8:00 pm. Sponsored by Telus, this is an excellent opportunity to enjoy the Festival with your family and participate in our fun filled day of entertainment and crafts. Come join the Festival of Trees Sunday, November 23rd for Family Day. It is an event targeted for families and there will be lots of fun filled events.

Family Fun Run

Sunday, November 23rd

The Annual Family Fun Run, sponsored by The Movement Group Fitness Mecca, will be starting at 1 pm. $25/family or $10/person which also includes entry into the Festival of Trees. Bring the whole family for a fun 5 km run, stroll or walk around the Fort George Park area. Santa will be there to send the runners off. After the run, warm up by sipping some hot chocolate and come on in to see all that the Festival has to offer.

Family Brunch Sunday, November 23rd We are thrilled to bring you this perfect opportunity to gather the family for Brunch, on Sunday, November 23rd from 10:00 until noon. Senior’s Lunch Monday, November 24th On Monday November 24th from noon until 2:00 pm. A great place to enjoy a full holiday luncheon with your friends, relax in a beautiful setting and listen to the entertainment we have lined up for you. This year’s luncheon has its’ very own Valet Service courtesy of the Medichair staff. Seniors who traditionally use walkers and need assistance to their table can now park their walkers in the Medichair “Parking Lot” inside. The staff of Medichair will be there to assist you in any way and are excited to be spending a couple of hours with you! They have even lined up a lift and recline chair as a Door Prize!! Tickets are $10 each and will sell out fast and will not be available at the door. Your tickets can be purchased at the Atrium at the Hospital or by calling (250) 565-2515.

The majority of the beautifully created Trees and Wreaths are available for sale through the Silent Auction that closes at 4:00 pm Sunday, November 30th. For these silent auction items it is always a good idea to be at the Festival near closing time on Sunday to make that final bid on your favourite item.

Purchase a raffle ticket for a chance to win one of three designer decorated trees.

That’s Entertainment

The People‘s Choice

The Festival of Trees is pleased to continue to present a wide array of live local entertainment to add to the festive atmosphere. Centre stage performances will be presented throughout the Festival and a full schedule will be posted at the front entrance. Please join us in celebrating our talented local entertainers. A big thank you to Judy Russell for coordinating.

Fest Cam Once again this year is our Live Fest Cam powered by Curtis Elite Security. Wondering what’s happening at Festival of Trees? Go to www. spiritofthenorth.ca and click on the Curtis Elite Fest Cam button during festival to check out the magic live.

Raffle tickets will be available until 4:00 pm, November 30th. The winner will be announced at 4:30 pm.

Every visitor to the Festival of Trees is given the opportunity to vote for their favorite Big Tree, Little Tree, Wreath and any of the other wonderful items. You can let us know yours by completing a People’s Choice ballot available at Admissions. Our designers are not formally judged on their submissions, so this is a wonderful way to let them know who you think has this year’s most popular creations. Watch for the winners in our thank you ad!

Coat Check

The Barracuda Swim Club will once again be volunteering in the Coat Check, with all proceeds (by donation) going to help with their expenses throughout the year. Please consider utilizing this area of Festival to help minimize the awkwardness of carrying your coats and heavy items as you visit the Festival. This area is ideal for School Groups, Choirs and visitors to our special events. Thanks to the Swim Club for helping with this area.

Frosty the Snowman Frosty the Snowman was a jolly happy soul, With a corn cob pipe and a button nose, And two eyes made out of coal.

Frosty the Snowman is a fairy tale, they say, He was made of snow, but the children know, How he came to life one day.

There must have been some magic, In that old silk hat they found, For when they placed it on his head, He began to dance around.

Frosty the Snowman knew the sun was hot that day, So he said, “Let’s run and we’ll have some fun now before I melt away.”

Senior’s Tea Thursday, November 27th A favourite event with our seniors & one of our longest running events is the Scotiabank Tea, held Thursday November 27th from 1-3pm. The staff from Scotiabank volunteer their time to prepare the treats, assist seniors with their seating and serve tea, as well as take the time to ensure their guests have a wonderful afternoon.

A wonderful opportunity to visit with friends, view the trees & enjoy the entertainment that we have lined up.

This event sells out quickly in advance and tickets are not available at the door. Tickets are $10 each and available at the Spirit of the North office in the Atrium at the Hospital or by calling (250) 565-2515.

Teddy Bear Breakfast Sunday, November 30th The Teddy Bear Breakfast, sponsored by TD Financial, is one of our most successful events! As in the past, we ask families to bring a new, unwrapped child’s toy to the breakfast and in return, each child receives a Teddy Bear from Santa. The new toys are donated to Northern Health and distributed to children in hospitals throughout the region this Christmas. What a great way to share the spirit of Christmas with your children or grandchildren.

This delightful event will occur Sunday, November 30th from 8:30 am to 11:00 am among the trees.

Tickets are only $20/Adult, $15/12 & under and include a hot buffet breakfast and admission to the Festival for the remainder of that day. page 17 — 2014

Wreaths & Little Trees

One of the most popular and endearing features of the Festival has been our display of homecrafted Wreaths, Centrepieces, Seasonal Planters and Little Trees, which are donated to us for sale

by Silent Auction. They are perfect for decorating the smaller spaces of an office or apartment or to add a special touch to every room of your home. Take a stroll through this colourful area, and make a silent auction bid. Bids close 4:00 pm Sunday, November 30th.

Community Enrichment Celebration Evening Each year the many people who make the Festival of Trees a successful event for the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation and healthcare in our region, are recognized and honoured for their many contributions. The Festival would not exist without community sponsors and volunteers; including the tree designers and organizing committee chairpersons. It is a team effort worthy of celebration.

Children’s Workshop

We invite you to visit the Tim Horton’s Children’s Workshop. Here children can visit a series of individual kiosks to create that one of a kind gift for someone special.

Bea’s Tree

O

ur Special Little Tree was purchased by Bea Dezell in the 50’s and was used to celebrate Christmas with the Brownie packs in Prince George.

After the Brownies, the tree was used by the PG Weavers and Spinners at Studio 2880 for several years and then was sold in a garage sale and bought by Shirley Gratton.

The tree re-surfaced at her garage sale and the Festival of Trees committee, led by Shirli-Gene Sadowick,decided that this little aluminum tree had a history that required preserving.

Christened Bea’s Tree it was decided that each year at the Festival of Tree’s Gala Auction night, the little tree would be sold to the highest bidder.

Winners are able to display and keep the tree through the holiday season. It is then returned to the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation, for use again at the next year’s Festival of Trees. Winners receive a commemorative photo and special ornament and have their story added to the history of the little tree.

Bea’s Tree has become part of the family tradition of the Prince George Festival of Trees.

Sadly on March 6th of this year, Bea passed away at the age of 105 in hospice after a decline in health during the previous month.

Born July 7, 1908 in North Vancouver, the second of three children to Robert and Mabel Hendrie. Predeceased in 1972 by her husband Garvin who owed much of his business and political success to her support and intelligence.

She lived her life helping others and was a great role model for her all her extended family. Her ability to overcome adversity and her constant optimistic outlook gave us all something to strive for. She was an active member of this community as a Girl Guide leader, a member of the Royal Purple and, in her later years, a strong supporter of the White Cane Club and the Canadian National Institute of the Blind.

Her positive attitude and use of technology even after the age of 80 allowed her to read and communicate in spite of her visual impairment.

She was a great help to others who were struggling to cope with visual and hearing difficulties.

We are so pleased to let you know that that the tradition will continue, and in addition to Bea’s Tree, for this year only, following a gracious donation by the family, we are able to offer “Bea’s Treasures”, to the successful bidder at the Gala Fundraising Auction Evening on November 28th. We are eternally grateful to the family for sharing Bea and her giving spirit with us. Just over a year ago Northern Health identified a need and tasked the Spirit of the North with raising $1.4 Million towards a Diagnostic Spect CT. The response has been amazing, but we aren’t quite there yet. In fact donations received to date have been so positive that we felt confident enough to procure the Discovery 670 SPECT-CT system and it is expected to arrive in early December. Nuclear Medicine is a medical specialty that is used to diagnose and treat diseases in a safe and painless way. It’s procedures permit the determination of medical information that may otherwise be unavailable, require surgery, or necessitate more expensive and invasive diagnostic tests. The procedures often identify abnormalities very early in the progression of a disease – long before some medical problems are apparent with other diagnostic tests. This early detection allows a disease to be treated sooner in its course when a more successful prognosis may be possible.

Oscar Fehr

Oscar Fehr lived a good life. To many, they would think he lived to a ripe old age too. His wife, Lynne would likely agree for the most part. Close to 30 years of marriage, a successful career in business around Prince George, many fish caught, and many more fish stories told. Golfing, travelling, and many good times with family and friends. For a man who could face any challenge head on, and at times even instigate a good challenge, he faced illness the same way.

Oscar’s story spanned just shy of 3 years and started when a mysterious rash appeared in the summer of 2011. “It was nothing,” … a little eczema perhaps.

Some ointment would clear it up right? Following a winter in Arizona, it resurfaced. More tests, more ointments, it wasn’t eczema at all, it was a side effect of a Cancer called paraneoplastic syndrome. A CT scan, an MRI, blood tests and ultrasounds, and a diagnosis of a mass stemming from a blockage of the Phrenic Nerve. More blood tests, CT’s, MRI’s, -- all of which they were truly grateful for, but still no diagnosis.

Finally in February 2012 a very critical diagnosis, Esophageal Cancer. Still more tests, one after another, a CT scan, an MRI, sometimes two ultrasounds in one day. Lynne saw “the process” wearing Oscar down… she saw a man giving up, not on the Doctors, Specialists,

healthcare professionals – they were doing their part.

She saw him giving up on what he could cope with. The tests, the waiting, the treatments, and the side effects.

At times it seemed unending.

There is no way to know if the outcome would have been any different if the Spect CT had been here. What we can do is hope that an earlier detection, and more accurate diagnosis, would have reduced the enduring number of tests, the wait time for results, and the emotional toll it took on Oscar and his loved ones.

Sadly Oscar passed away on June 11th of this year. His lengthy illness is one that many can relate to, and many others are enduring right now. The journey Oscar endured was using the best technology available at the time. CT Scans, Xrays, MRI’s serve a purpose, and each has their place in diagnostics. Advancing healthcare in the North for our patients is a never ending process. The Diagnostic Spect CT would bring UHNBC to the next level and may have made the journey for Oscar, and many others a little more tolerable.
