Working Together for a GREAT Neighborhood

President’s Message

I want to touch on a few topics to help keep you informed. But before that: •

Thanks to Dawn Amos and Cathy and George Reichl for a great fishing derby. Thanks to Lynn Meinzer her committee for another great Summer Kickoff Party.

At the June 19th meeting John Powers, Highway Commissioner for Palatine Township, made a presentation in which he described an alternative to the road plan first presented in February (see Bridge article) and also discussed the process for making a decision and going out for actual contract proposals. The review process includes our Community, Cook County, IDOT, and the Army Corps of Engineers. Powers indicated that the process takes several months and involves inputs from

all of the above. We’ll keep you updated as the Township continues to present alternative proposals. One of the issues raised by the Save Briarwood Bridge Group was the speed limit on Briarwood, currently 25 MPH, They requested that it be lowered to 20 MPH. John Powers has put in a request to Cook County, which sets the speed limits for unincorporated areas, for that change. Powers also said that a request from PGE residents to lower the speed limit throughout PGE might influence the County’s decision. The Board will be seeking your input next week, asking you to vote for or against a 20 MPH speed limit throughout PGE. I thank you in advance for your quick responses to this vote. Flooding was also a major issue brought up at the meeting. Unfortunately, the Township has no ju-

Briarwood Bridge Plans Under Review

Plum Grove Estates residents and road district officials are weighing the merits and risks of replacing or repairing the bridge and approach roads on Briarwood Lane between the frontage road and Longacres Lane.

As first proposed at the PGE POA general meeting in February, the bridge would meet current construction standards, provide better flow of the Salt Creek, and allow

easier maneuvering of maintenance vehicles. Residents at the meeting stated their concerns that a wider two-lane bridge and fewer road curves would encourage faster traffic and reduce safety.

In April, PGE residents addressed the Palatine Township Board meeting regarding the proposed bridge and road. At the May

Neighbor Greetings Welcome to New PGE Neighbors

Timothy Peters and Stephanie Shukas, 2260 Longacres Lane. The Plum Grove Estates Welcoming Committee brings a copy of the PGE Directory and a special gift for new neighbors. Please contact Guy Karm at 847397-5276 for more information.

Sympathy and Thoughts for Our Friends in Plum Grove Estates Condolences to the families of:

Dick Tobin, 365 South Elmwood Lane, who died on March 13, 2012. Mildred Koch, 302 Longacres Lane, who died on March 13, 2012

Harry and Stella Bonners, 390 Meadows Lane, who died within eight weeks of each other this Spring. “They loved their home in Plum Grove Estates,” said their daughter Joyce, “and gave strict instructions that they never wanted to leave there—and their wishes were granted.”

PGE Frontage Road Fence Replaced by Natural Green Border The PGE POA board approved replacing the aging and deteriorating split-rail fence bordering the neighborhood along the West Frontage Road. The fence, and several back yards of PGE residences, were exposed when utility crews crudely removed vegetation from near power lines.

In June, PGE POA hired Great American Landscaping to remove the fence and then plant 100 Viburnum “Autumn Jazz” shrubs, all at least four feet tall, along the fence line. The workers also ground down 22 stumps and cleaned up debris in the area.

These shrubs will grow taller and wider to provide privacy and shade for the residents next to the frontage road. Because the shrubs are planted in the common area, the association will be responsible for the maintenance of these plants.

For more information about this and other PGE POA landscaping projects, please contact Lynn Meinzer at social@pgepoa.org. Plum Grove Estates Property Owners Association • P.O. Box 8432 • Rolling Meadows, IL 60008-8432 • www.pgepoa.org

Enjoy a Walk Around PGE!

When you are walking the dog(s), biking, or jogging, you can easily log your miles without leaving Plum Grove Estates. The distances below are estimates based on my car’s odometer, but perhaps you can use this information to figure out how to get in a short, medium, or long stroll.

Short Routes

Sometimes just circling around the block is about a half mile. My dog is a big fan of the short routes!

Medium Route

This is about a mile, or twenty minutes if your companion enjoys sniffing things and doing “business.”

Folow Circle around to Longacres and then back along Circle.

Long Route

Combine the medium route and a loop around Plum Grove Pond to Thorntree and Briarwood. This is about two miles long and includes a small hill.

Extra-Long Route

This route wanders through most of Plum Grove Estates. Take Longacres to Park Drive. Walk through Plum Grove Park to reach Frontage Road West, then take Meadows and Briarwood, Brookdale, Linden, and Circle to chalk up about two-and-a-half miles.

Briarwood Bridge, cont.

PGE POA meeting, Roland Sachs, Rolling Meadows Township Road District Superintendent, and John Powers, Palatine Township Highway Commissioner, were challenged by residents organized to oppose the new construction. In a heated discussion, several residents voiced their concerns and suggested alternative construction, including bridge repair instead of replacement. The residents in attendance then voted to oppose the originally proposed project.

bridge project. In the township's new replacement proposal there will be less disruption of Briarwood Lane and surrounding trees, and the design will be in keeping with our neighborhood. Mr. Powers stated this version will cost the township approximately $500,000 and will last our community for 50-60 years. Mr. Powers will also get a quote for re-installing walls and parapets on a replacement bridge.

Powers and Sachs have met with some PGE POA board officers and residents to discuss alternatives to the original proposal. On June 19, 2012, these alternatives were presented at another public meeting.

To replace the bridge, with a size very similar to the existing bridge, the speed limit (due to current safety codes and regulations) would have to be lowered to 20MPH throughout the neighborhood. The Board of Directors will be asking you to vote on lowering the speed limit to 20MPH . The results of this vote, if in favor of lowering the speed limit, will be sent onto Cook County for their approval.

The residents against the bridge reconstruction have a Web site, www.savebriarwood.com, to explain their opposition and suggest construction and traffic solutions that will not require total replacement. The road district has a description of the project online, and reasons for moving forward with it, at http://www.palhwy.com/newsletter/2012-spring/

A Compromise in the Making?

A meeting regarding the Briarwood Bridge was held on June 19, 2012 at the Plum Grove Park. Information was made available from John Powers, Palatine Township, for a scaled down version of the

Wally Wilson, Save Briarwood Bridge, stressed the importance of repairing the existing bridge to maintain the history of our community and it's trees. Mr. Powers stated that this version will cost the township approximately $270,000, barring any hidden disintegration. These repairs will last about 10 years, with no guarantee that there would be funds available to repair the bridge in the years to come.

2012 Fishing Derby

The annual Plum Grove Estates Fishing Derby on June 2, 2012 featured new and seasoned anglers competing for the catch of the day.

Ryan Allen, Angie Cornwell, Brett, Evan, and Kyla Dieter, Jeremy Gearhart, Ella Prosecky, William, Stevie, and Ryan Sperling, and Clara and Ethan Yates fished at a largely unforgiving Plum Grove Pond on a warm spring day.

Kyla Dieter caught the largest fish: an 8-1/2" catfish. Evan Dieter caught the most fish (four). Ethan Yates was recognized for “capturing the true essence of fishing.”

Many thanks to Dawn Amos for organizing the fishing derby.

2012 Summer Kickoff

Residents gathered together again at Plum Grove Park to enjoy the pool, patio, great food and the fun company of neighbors at the Summer Kick-Off.

Moretti’s provided cold and hot food while attendees enjoyed a variety of refreshments. Thanks to PGE POA Board Members Lynn Meinzer, Maria Pappas and Debbie Denten, the “Party Planners,” for taking care of all the details of the event. The unanticipated wind added an extra challenge to keep things in place but also provided a wonderful breeze while young and older alike enjoyed “kicking off Summer Days.”
