A Brief History The origins of Prince George can be traced to the fur trading post of Fort George, established in 1807 by Simon Fraser. The post was centered in the centuries-old homeland of the Lheidli T’Enneh First Nation. Agricultural settlement around Fort George began about 1906 when it was realized that the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway (later CN Rail) would pass near the fur post. The railway arrived in 1914 and construction of the railway townsite commenced. The City of Prince George was incorporated on March 6, 1915. Canada: Windsor Publications, Ltd. Arts & Culture A Golden Raven Experience The symbol of the Golden Raven was chosen to identify cultural venues within the region of Prince George. The symbol’s purpose is to assure visitors enjoy a quality experience when visiting any cultural site bearing the Golden Raven designation. What makes the Golden Raven distinct is that it recognizes the shared historical and cultural roots of north central British Columbia while celebrating each attraction’s unique cultural offerings. Each visitor will leave our region with a clear sense of our pioneer past and cultural present. VALEMOUNT MUSEUM VALEMOUNT, BC 250-566-4177 www.valemountmuseum.ca From 1914 until 1981, Valemount’s museum was the town’s railway station, one of the busiest places in the bustling railroad town situated between the three mountain ranges and in the shadow of the tallest mountain in the Rockies — Mount Robson. At the Valemount Museum visitors learn about the people and events that built the community. Each room tells a different story. The railroad room features a model railroad that takes visitors through the historic communities of Lucerne, Tete Jaune, Red Pass and Swift Creek. The lobby contains an exhibit on Japanese Internment Camps that existed in the area. Part of the basement has been converted to a Trapper’s cabin with his tools and furs. And the living room is where visitors gain a perspective on the life of the early settlers. A wide variety of interesting artifacts are all on display. WHISTLE STOP GALLERY McBRIDE, BC 250-569-8891

Shoppers, browsers and history buffs can see an incredible range of original artwork created by members of the non-profit Whistle Stop Gallery Society. The station is home to photos and mementos tracing McBride’s pioneer past and the Gallery stocks many books written about the history of the region by local authors. valley museum & archives McBRIDE, BC 250-569-8891 www.mcbridemuseum.ca The exhibition area is at the Museum/ Library building on Dominion Street in McBride. Mackenzie was one of the many planned communities born out of the forestry resource boom in the 1960’s and the Museum has documented every step of this energetic community’s growth. Photographs colourfully illustrate the remarkable job contractors undertook in building roads, homes, mills and even creating Canada’s largest man-made lake, in the wilderness of northern B.C. Perhaps the most important treasures are a series of portraits by Marge McDougall, who created oil paintings of First Nation’s men and women from 1959 to 1965. The museum will also introduce you to the massive 178-ton tree crusher used during the creation of Williston Lake from 1964 to 1966. When Billy Barker struck gold on Williams Creek in 1862 he probably couldn’t have predicted how many thousands of prospectors would travel great distances for a shot at becoming rich. Barkerville boomed between 1862 and 1870, with more than 100,000 people traveling on the Cariboo Wagon Road to work on the gold fields. Barkerville was once a bustling city filled with traffic, people, excitement and optimism — it didn’t take long to become the largest city west of Chicago and north of San Francisco. The historic town of Barkerville is now BC’s largest living museum and hosts more that 65,000 guests throughout the summer. The Chinese community was an integral part of Barkerville life for nearly 100 years. Visiting Barkerville is truly like going back in time, with more than 125 heritage buildings, live theatre and demonstrations. History will truly come to life as you explore what Barkerville has to offer.

Prince George is located at the junction of Western Canada’s two main highways. The northsouth Highway 97 and the eastwest Highway 16. One of the best parts of the drive to Prince George is the bountiful wildlife that is often seen. In addition to frequent sightings of black bears, eagles and hawks, deer and moose are plentiful. However, the wildlife is also a danger so stay alert especially around dawn and dusk. Road Condition Report Website: www.drivebc.com

HERITAGE TRAILS The Heritage Trails will lead you through the City’s history. The rivers and their towering cutbanks are preglacial in origin. Around the turn of the century, pioneers arrived by paddlewheel steamboat. Today, jet boats and recreational canoes skim over the river waters. Location & Use The Trails extend between Cameron Street overpass and Carrie Jane Gray Park with only two major road crossings. The Trail is designed for multiple use for walkers, joggers and bicyclists. A complete circuit of more than 11 km can be made by following the Carney Street alternate routes and side trails. The route is clearly marked with signs bearing the Heritage Trails logo. Please take care in crossing streets and be considerate of other users and adjacent residents. A park and trail map for the City of Prince George is available on the parks map page. www.city.pg.bc.ca/recculture/parks/ parkmaps/
