HEN PEOPLE FROM ACROSS THE WORLD are asked about

Pittsburgh, they usually talk about the Steelers, the Pirates, or the Penguins. Sports have a strong grip on Pittsburgh’s culture, but Pittsburgh City Paper wants readers to understand that the region has so much more to offer. Pittsburgh is the City of Champions, and to CP, the city’s greatest champions are the people in our arts and culture, food and drink, and small businesses. Our champions are the ones in the streets fighting for change, the ones baking our bread, the ones making music to help us get through our day. Best Of Pittsburgh has been an annual tradition for over 20 years, but this year is different. Many local businesses and organizations went through restrictions as a way to stem the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. We weren’t even sure if we were going to be able to complete a Best Of issue this year, not just because of the uncertainty around COVID-19, but because the pandemic had hit us hard financially too, and we had to furlough a significant amount of our staff. But we heard positive feedback from nominees who said continuing CP’s Best Of tradition would provide them a much-needed boost. And CP is also learning lessons from this year on how to make our Best Of even more representative. Just like how the adversity of the pandemic has brought out some truly creative solutions from local businesses, we have adjusted and decided to highlight those with some special COVID-related categories. The country has also been undergoing one of the largest civil rights movement in its history, as Pittsburgh and

other cities across the U.S. have been protesting in the streets calling for an end to police brutality as part of the ongoing Black Lives Matter movement. This year, CP has created new categories for Black-owned, people of color-owned, and LGBTQ-owned businesses. These establishments already have an uphill battle in a region with some of the worst racial inequality in the country, and we want to do our part to make sure every business in Pittsburgh has an equal opportunity to be recognized. We know there are things we missed, and we will continue to adjust each year to better represent Pittsburgh. Our changes to this year’s poll actually began last year, when Michael Canton, host of The Soul Show on local radio station WYEP, made some suggestions to revamp the music categories to account for more diversity. This year, following his lead, we split up Blues and Jazz into two separate categories and added new music categories, including R&B, World Music, and more. It’s because of feedback like Canton’s that we continue to grow and learn, and we encourage you to send suggestions after looking through this year’s list to let us know how we can improve for next year. (Don’t miss Canton’s new monthly CP column too!) Finally, we know our 2020 Best Of issue is bittersweet. The economic fallout of the pandemic has caused dozens, if not hundreds, of Pittsburgh businesses and organizations to shut down. Some were former Best Of Pittsburgh winners. Some were so loved, they won anyway this year, even though coronavirus ended their runs. Our only hope is that we can remember how great they were and learn to appreciate all the winners as much as we can this year, and moving forward.

INCE 2014, Knotzland has been

gracing the necks of fashionable people with its bespoke bow ties made from recycled fabrics. When COVID-19 hit, the Wilkinsburg-based business quickly shifted gears to create thousands of face masks that combine functionality with eye-catching designs. And now, Pittsburgh City Paper readers have voted Knotzland as the winner in the Best Locally Designed Masks category. Knotzland founder Nisha Blackwell says the win came as a bit of a surprise. “While extremely grateful, we actually didn’t realize that we were nominated and [were] pretty in the weeds maskmaking at the time and couldn’t put much into promotion of our nomination,” says Blackwell. “So this win truly feels like our community and supporters

uplifted us to this.” She says Knotzland started making masks back in March when the outbreak reached pandemic proportions and people were scrambling to get protective gear. To keep up with the demand, she and her team formed the (mask) Makers PGH collective, through which 300 volunteers worked to provide masks for “community members who had low to no access to them and also those who are at higher risk.”

303 S. Trenton Ave., Wilkinsburg knotzland.com As of now, she says they have given away 8,500 masks to people in the community. She adds that Knotzland

currently has 22 people working remotely around the region to continue making masks from their homes. In addition, Knotzland has sold around 5,000 masks, which come individually or in colorful bundles. Blackwell says custom mask orders, including requests for corporate gifts and weddings, have been “increasing each week.” The masks, she says, are made from donated fabric that came from quilters or from local organizations like the Center for Creative Reuse. Blackwell says the response from customers has been overwhelming. “I love sharing the story about one of our customers who purchases masks to go with her church outfits and is currently commissioning us to select some for her fall jackets,” says Blackwell.

O SUMMER IS complete without

a hearty helping of ice cream. For Leona’s, makers of locally beloved, lactose-free ice cream sandwiches, the demand for frozen treats continued all summer long, even in the middle of a pandemic. Like most businesses, owners Katie Heldstab and Christa Puskarich dealt with the stress of implementing COVID19 safety protocols while trying to keep customers happy. Initially, Leona’s shut down ice cream production and only sold the stock they already had. “We realized that the demand was still high and if we didn’t start making ice cream, we wouldn’t be able to keep our staff, and considering unemployment wasn’t coming through, it was very important to keep working,” says Heldstab. The team gradually brought back staff, implemented mandatory masks

and plexiglass dividers, and began working in split shifts to churn out new batches of ice cream.

leonaspgh.com

Puskarich and Heldstab are not only business partners, but also partners in life. The pair actually began making homemade ice cream after receiving an ice cream maker as a wedding gift. For Heldstab and Puskarich, winning Best LGBTQ-owned business is especially meaningful. “We think it’s vital to be authentic and live whole lives. Part of that wholeness is that my wife and I own this company,” says Heldstab. “When we were coming up and coming out, we didn’t see a ton of

visible queer people in normal jobs, much less owning their own company. We are grateful for this recognition and hope to use it as a way to signal [to] other folx that entrepreneurship is an option, and so is visibility.” Leona’s is known for their big and tall ice cream sandwiches, which sit between two homemade cookies. The flavors often put a twist on classic desserts, like strawberry pretzel salad and Key lime pie, as well as concocting modern flavors like black sesame ice cream on salted tahini cookies. Over the past few months, Leona’s hasn’t been able to invest as much time into creating new flavors. As of recently, the team has started experimenting again, resulting in the newly released vanilla malt ice cream on chocolate wafer cookies, which “tastes like a malted milk ball.”

B

ARBERSHOPS ARE KNOWN to be sacred spaces in many Black neighborhoods, often serving as community centers where customers hang out while getting their hair done. Joe Patterson, a Black man who grew up in the predominantly white Bridgeville area, didn’t have that kind of place growing up. So, after six years of working out of Stansbury’s Barbershop in Carnegie, he opened his own shop, aiming to build a community of his own. “You know, I kind of refer to people as family and not clients,” Patterson says. “I like making people feel good about themselves. I like making older gentlemen feel younger again; a young gentleman feel like he is cool now to go to school.” It was a year and a half ago when Patterson opened JP’s Barbershop, which readers chose as this year’s Best Black-

Owned Barber Shop. He worked by himself for the first 10 months, and recently was able to hire a second barber.

343 Hickman St., Bridgeville facebook.com/jpsbarbershop

“My barbershop ranges from free apple juice with no sugar to sports magazines to the news channel at five o’clock,” he says. His portfolio is full of a range of styles, including lots of smiling kids. “I love the kids because a barbershop is somewhere that you can reach children,” Patterson says. “Children look up to you in a barbershop, and I think that’s what barbershops were meant to do is put the correct message out on the streets to the youth, and I think that’s

where change can start — it can start at your local barbershop.” Patterson says that while he is seeing Black customers travel to his shop from all over the city, the majority of the customers in his shop are white. JP’s Barbershop is only one of a few Black-owned businesses in Bridgeville, which is 95% white, according to recent census estimates. And that’s why he says this win means so much to him, in addition to also placing second for Best Barbershop, because he wants to see Bridgeville keep growing. “I always felt like I would be able to change things around here and obviously, I’ve been here for a year and a half now and things are really changing for this area and people are really excited and really happy to see this change, so for us to win the Black-owned business, it’s very honoring.”

HEN HE HEARD the term “leg-

acy band,” the first thing that popped into Anti-Flag vocalist and guitarist Justin Sane’s head was all of the “bad-ass classic rock bands” that he grew up listening to on WDVE. “Like Boston and Kiss! So I was into it,” says Sane of Anti-Flag’s first-place Best Legacy Band win in Pittsburgh City Paper’s annual Best Of Readers’ Poll. “That said, in this case, I interpreted the meaning of legacy to mean you left a lasting mark on people or … you just got old. Hah! It definitely speaks to longevity which we have certainly had.” Longevity is one word for it. Since the punk rock band’s formation in 1993, Anti-Flag has been spreading its message of activism, human rights, and anti-war in Pittsburgh and around the world. This is in part thanks to their own international touring, but also

to A-F Records, the record label the members of the band founded in 1997 as a platform to spread the music of other socially conscious and politically active punk bands.

anti-flag.com

Eventually, Anti-Flag took that mission even further with the creation of ANTIfest in the U.K., a socially conscious punk rock festival that made its way to the band’s hometown of Pittsburgh in 2017 for the event’s fourth iteration. It coincided with A-F Records 20th anniversary. But while Anti-Flag — made up of Sane, Chris #2 (bass guitar), Chris Head (bass guitar), and Pat Thetic (drums) — has spent the past 27 years traveling

the world spreading political activism through their music, this win is extra special for them because they all still live in Pittsburgh. “It has always been a tradition at Anti-Flag shows to announce from stage: ‘We are Anti-Flag from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania!’ in a way you’d expect the ring announcer at a wrestling match to say it,” says Sane. “It kind of started as a shtick but over the years it became a celebration of the fact that this city made us who we are and we want everyone to know it exists and it is special. “We’ve literally made that proclamation all over the planet: Hong Kong, Moscow, Berlin, London, Tokyo, Sydney, Jakarta, you name it! So to be recognized by our city means a lot to me. The fact that people are aware that we exist in the place we love the most, that is incredibly special to me.”

ISS FREDDYE HAS BEEN called “Lady of the Blues” in Pittsburgh since her 2017 release of an album with the same name. Now, that title has some backing, as she has been voted Best Blues Band or Performer in Pittsburgh City Paper’s 2020 Best Of readers’ poll. “I am humbled and honored,” says Miss Freddye, whose real name is Fredericka Stover, of the first-place win. “I feel so grateful for everyone out there who loves music, who voted for me/us!” Stover has been involved with music since she was a child. “I used to sing with neighborhood friends as a kid. We would sing songs we knew and make up songs,” she says. But her first official step into the music world came at 15 when she joined her church choir. In 1996, under the direction of “Big AL” Leavitt, she joined her first blues band, BMW (Blues Music Works). Stover marks that year

as the start of her professional singing and performing career. A few years later, in 2002, Stover created the band Blue Faze. Miss Freddye’s Blues Band (electric blues) and Miss Freddye’s Homecookin’ Band came several years after that.

missfreddye.com

“I love when the band and the audiences enjoy each other,” says Stover. “From the beginning of the show to the end, there is excitement. This gives me the energy to give back to the audiences.” After 25 years of singing the blues, however, Stover is returning to her church roots. The artist recently released a single, “Wade in the Water,”

which is a cover of a song that dates back to 1901 and has ties with the Underground Railroad. The track is set to be the lead single on a gospel album with a projected release in 2021. “Wade in the Water” was produced by Mike Morgan, arranged by Nashville’s Jay Vernali, and released on MMM Records. In her cover of the song, Stover captures the heaviness of the track’s history while providing moments of stirring exhilaration. Even though the track leans towards the gospel genre, Stover’s flair for blues elements — emotive vocals and repetitious lyric structure — soak the tune. “Wade in the Water” also features backing vocals from Kim Parent, which works to bolster Stover’s powerful, robust voice. Stover hasn’t hung up her blues hat yet though. She’s working on a roots and blues album too, also projected to release in 2021.

W

INE ISN’T THE first thing that comes to mind when thinking of the rolling hills in Western Pennsylvania. But nestled in those hills is La Casa Narcisi Winery, a Tuscaninspired vineyard with a near 19year legacy. The winery’s history, however, dates further back than 2001. In 1911, Raphael Narcisi and his two brothers immigrated to the United States from Italy. A passion for wine traveled with Raphael and passed through the family, until Dennis Narcisi, Raphael’s great nephew, along with his wife and son, turned this passion into Narcisi Winery. Today, the vineyard — crowned winner of three categories in this year’s Best of Pittsburgh readers’ poll — produces around 175,000 bottles of wine a year, has a full restaurant with an expansive outdoor area, and offers

4578 Gibsonia Road, Gibsonia narcisiwinery.com

tours and tastings. Only two of the grape varietals used to make Narcisi’s wine, frontenac and vidal blanc, are grown on the winery’s property; the rest they source from other regions of Pennsylvania and the Lake Erie American Viticultural Area. Roberto Smiraglio, director of operations for the vineyard, says there are a few key differences that set their wine apart from those made in warmer climates. Northern-grown grapes are typically less ripe and lower in sugar content than grapes grown in a warmer climate, leading to wines that are acidic and tart. This is why, Smiraglio explains,

Pa.-made wines tend to be white. All of the Narcisi wines are crafted from a mix of old-world traditions and modern technology. They use natural methods of winemaking to keep the true character of the grape intact. Narcisi bottles everything from a sweet, refreshing riesling to a full-bodied cabernet sauvignon. Smiraglio says the Stella, a dry red blend, is by far their most popular red, with the Chardonnay — unoaked — and riesling, which Smiraglio says is off-dry, favored from their whites. Their black raspberry and peach wines (the fruit is blended with a grape wine base) are in high demand in the warmer months. Narcisi Vineyard wines can be found outside of their Gibsonia home (which is just 30 minutes north of Pittsburgh) at Giant Eagle and other retailers, or by the glass and bottle at many local restaurants.

EASONING, WOOD smoke, and

barbecue sauce. This is what JP Mackovich, part of the team behind Two Brothers Bar-B-Q, believes makes good barbecue; match the flavors together, he says, and you’re guaranteed tasty results. Clearly, this year’s winner of Best BBQ is on to something. Mackovich, who runs Two Brothers Bar-B-Q with his wife, Terri, began smoking meat in 2005 with no prior food industry experience. He drew up a business plan in 2004 and went for it, not to make money, he says, “but to do it.” In the last 15 years, the barbecue joint has grown into three pieces: a food truck, catering, and a takeout location. When all branches are in full swing, Mackovich and his team operate three

massive rotisserie smokers (Mackovich smokes with hickory), which can each hold up to 72 pork shoulders.

5228 Thoms Run Road, Collier 2brosbbq.com

The pitmaster won’t commit his food to a specific style of barbecue, saying that he’s taken pieces of the different variations, along with what he believes Western Pa. palates will like, into account to build his menu. Diners can find traditional eats — pulled pork, chicken, ribs, mac and cheese, coleslaw, and more — on his bill of dishes, but

there are plenty of twists and turns as well. Mackovich’s rotating menu has fusions like pulled pork nachos and egg rolls, a pork quesadilla, a smoked chicken banh mi, and a fun mashup of beignets and PB&J. But even with these unconventional plates, Mackovich is insistent that if it’s on his menu, it has a touch of his barbecue. If he’s adding a BLT to the list, the bacon will be smoked. Smoked brisket fills his cheesesteak, and eggs benedict on the brunch menu features corned beef, smoked. Mackovich says being a pitmaster is an art form, and it’s obvious that he’s mastered the trade. After 15 years, his seasoning, smoke, and sauce triple threat is keeping the city coming back for more.

JEAN-MARC CHATELLIER’S FRENCH BAKERY BEST MACARON BY RYAN DETO // RYANDETO@PGHCITYPAPER.COM

J

EAN-MARC CHATELLIER basically pioneered macarons in the Pittsburgh area, so it’s only fitting that his Millvale bakery be awarded Best Macaron by Pittsburgh City Paper readers. “I was pretty surprised, I’ve never won anything,” said Chatellier, who has been running his bakery for more than 30 years and baking macarons for nearly a decade. “It is good news.” Macarons (not macaroons or the French President Emanual Macron, Chatellier reminds readers) are small French sandwich cookies made from almond flour, and packed with fillings like ganache or jam. Many bakeries in Pittsburgh sell them now, but JeanMarc Chatellier’s French Bakery was the first to do so in Pittsburgh. Chatellier first learned about macarons

on a trip home to France. He noticed their growing popularity there and spoke to his old boss about them. Then, nine years ago, he started to bake them out of his small shop. This was well before they had become popular in Pittsburgh. He says he took time to perfect the recipe and techniques.

213 North Ave., Millvale jeanmarcchatellier.com “The U.S. is a good country to make macarons because the best almonds are from California,” he says. “You need to know exactly how to whip the egg whites and to mix them almost perfectly. [The macarons] cannot be cracked, they have to be nice and smooth, like an eggshell.

The oven is key. Sometimes you have to open the door to take out some humidity.” Chatellier offers 18 different flavors of macarons, including orange, lemon, mango, lavender, rose-raspberry, and pistachio. Chatellier is particularly proud of his salted caramel macaron. He travels home to the Brittany region of France to obtain Brittany salt, which he says is the best in the world. He is also proud of the unpretentious nature of his macarons. He rejects the notion that the delicate cookies need elaborate boxes to serve. Chatellier says his cheaper boxes allow him to focus on the quality of the cookie and lower the price for his customers. “Someone once said that ‘you don’t have good quality boxes,’ and I responded, ‘well, do you eat the box?’” says Chatellier.

B

EFORE THE CORONAVIRUS pandemic, a familiar Pittsburgh sight was a long line stretching outside of Gaucho Parrilla Argentina restaurant in the Strip District. It could be a weekday in the cold, and it didn’t matter. The line of people waiting to order Argentinianstyle steak was always long. And anyone who had eaten at Gaucho understood why people would wait: it’s some of the best food in Pittsburgh. It comes as little surprise, then, that Gaucho has nabbed two awards in Pittsburgh City Paper’s “Best Of” readers’ poll this year: The restaurant is the readers’ Best Steakhouse and Best Latin American Restaurant. Even before this announcement, Gaucho’s success was evident, as the restaurant had moved from its relatively

cramped Strip District location to a larger locale in the heart of Downtown’s Cultural District. And this new location means some changes to service. At the old location, diners ordered at the counter.

146 Sixth St., Downtown eatgaucho.com

“For the new location, diners can expect tableside service in one of our three dining rooms,” says Gaucho general manager Erica Isaac. “The rooftop patio is open while the weather permits! We have a brand new grill, but the same

woodfired flavors we are known for.” Diners can still expect those intoxicating smoky aromas and enjoy juicy flank stanks, chorizo, sirloins, and more, all with the signature chimichurri and other South American sauces. Argentinians really know how to appreciate steak, and Gaucho honors this spirit. Isaac says the new Downtown location, even under coronavirus restrictions, still offers more seating than the old Strip location. And Gaucho now has a full bar, including cocktails popular in South America like sangria, Fernet and Coke, and pisco sour, as well as other Pittsburgh favorites. And to help Gaucho avoid those infamous lines it was known for, the restaurant has a new reservation system. No need to wait outside anymore.

ARKEEA “KEEA” HART, Janita

Kilgore, and Mia Marshall work to promote self-care and increase opportunities for Black women and femmes in Pittsburgh with their podcast Girls Running Shit. Maybe this is why Pittsburgh City Paper readers voted the local podcast — launched in 2018 — as the Best Next Big Thing. And their efforts are especially important given recent studies showing that Pittsburgh has the lowest quality of life in the country for Black women. “It’s incredible, and although we’re honored, we know it means we (as a city) need to do more,” say the three women in a joint statement. “We want to make sure more [Black] women and [Black] femme creatives can also get more shine and opportunities to be recognized like this as well.” While the pandemic has sidelined the usual in-person networking events,

fundraisers, and other gatherings hosted by Girls Running Shit, the trio says they are staying active. They are using their social media platforms to post informative, positive messages and mentalhealth resources for Black women and femmes affected by COVID-19. And they’re promoting the Black Lives Matter movement.

girlsrunningshit.com

They have also been donating to various causes, raising money for care kits, attending local protests, and making sure to take time to care for themselves and reflect. “With the attack on [Black] bodies

in the various ways, we realized that although we were promoting selfcare, we recognized we weren’t doing that for ourselves and needed to take a break,” they say, adding, “Being three [Black] women, we are grieving in many ways. We are scared. We are tired; but because we know our community is suffering like this as well, we are trying to uplift, educate, and inform about the ever-changing climate we’re in.” The women say they are also in the process of revamping the podcast (the last episode was posted in May), providing new creative content and branding, and brainstorming virtual events. “We want to start recording soon, but want to make sure we are bringing certain topics and guests whom we can meet with virtually,” they say. “Above all else, we are just trying to make sure we are healing and promoting healing for our community.”

J

OHN CHAMBERLIN says Merrian-

Webster got “jagoff” wrong when they put it in the dictionary. Jagoff isn’t just a “stupid, irritating” person, but a term of endearment. “Ask any Pittsburgher,” he says. “You’re like, ‘Hey! How have you been, jagoff?” Chamberlain and his partner, Rachael Rennebeck, are the stars of YaJagoff!, this year’s readers’ choice for Best Local Podcast, which interviews local businesses and personalities. Before the pandemic, it was common to see them out every week at events recording live. Recently, they’ve been having porch sessions. The hosts, like their podcast name, are 100% Pittsburgh. Both have unapologetically thick Yinzer accents, and showed up to their Best Of photoshoot with their own parking chair (which they share.) They high five each other after every other sentence, in a totally charming,

yajagoff.com

affectionate way. “I drive to her house to work every day, and when I’m driving, I see everybody sitting in line going the opposite way into town, and they all look miserable,” says Chamberlin. “We’re not millionaires by any chance, but we certainly are happy doing what we’re doing. It was cool that I found a partner that would own it just as much as I would and, you know, I mean own it in your heart and in your mind like Rachel does.” “He’s the best friend I’ve ever had,” adds Rennebeck. If you’ve only seen YaJagoff!’s blog, which placed second in this year’s poll for Best Local Blog, you might only know

the pair as the goofy folks who point out yinzers who park like jags. But in addition to their silly side, Chamberlain and Rennebeck have proven to be able to tackle serious subjects as well. This summer, the podcast hosted “The Change Exchange,” a town hall panel discussion on racial inequality, and the pair did an exceptional job moderating. It’s something they say they want to do more of. “We always wanted the podcast to be 75% informational and 25% fun,” says Rennebeck. In addition to their podcast and blog, they provide PR services to clients as well. And while they say people get a kick out of the Jagoff name, it sometimes raises eyebrows. Like when it’s time to get paid. “‘Who do we make the check out to? YaJagoff! Media?’” Rennebeck laughs. “And they’re like, ‘Is there something else?’”

BEST PLACE TO VOLUNTEER

HEN COVID-19 began impacting

Pittsburgh in March, the economic impact was immediate. Suddenly, thousands of people were out of work without a clear answer when they might receive help or get their jobs back. In the arts community, actors, musicians, DJs, venue staff, and others who relied on income from gig performances had no way to perform their jobs from home. Several friends in the local arts community, including Julie Mallis, Joshua Orange, and sarah huny young, began discussing what they could do to help and decided on a GoFundMe called the PGH Artists Emergency Fund. The fund’s goal was set up to help those with canceled jobs and gigs with rent, bills, food, and other necessities.

“We can’t wait around for our government to come through to support people,” Mallis told Pittsburgh City Paper back in March. “We know historically that’s not going to be good enough.”

gofundme.com/f/pgh-artistsemergency-fund

The group was able to crowdfund over $31,000 and distribute stipends of $250 to over 150 Pittsburgh artists. The fund raised so much money that the fund’s creators and the rest of the team partnered with the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council to help manage the money

raised and facilitate distribution of the funds. The PGH Artists Emergency Fund wrapped up fundraising in June, just as nearly every city across the country was facing a reckoning with institutional and personal racism as the Black Lives Matter movement grew. So, after dispersing a final round of assistance for local artists, the PGH Artists Emergency Fund donated its leftover resources to bail funds and other organizations helping to combat racism, as well as individuals in need. “With the power of us all coming together to support each other and the creative community, we proved that we can support each other when our systems and leaders fail us,” said the team in a June statement.
