Beaver County History Days
Take a journey back to “Then and Now” during Beaver County History Weekend It’s safe to say that our beloved Beaver County sure does have an illustrious history. Did you know, for example, that our county once generated almost 60 percent of the nation’s wealth? A lot has changed in our area over the years, and much of it is recorded for posterity at the many museums and historical sites scattered throughout the county. Venture back to the past in all its glory on May 6 and 7
during the Beaver County History Weekend. With the theme of “Then and Now”, the sites listed below will be offering free admission on these two days (with the exception Old Economy Village). It’s a wonderful opportunity to learn about how our railroads have impacted our nation, how going to school here 100 years ago differed from what our children experience today, how labor unions and local industries evolved, and so much more.
This special weekend is being hosted by the Beaver County Historical Research and Landmarks Foundation, located at Vicary Mansion. Enjoy exhibits, photo and video displays, food and fun activities from yesteryear. To learn more, go to the Beaver County Recreation and Tourism website at visitbeavercounty.com.

Don’t forget about the treasures in your own back yard You can learn a lot about our local communities. Volunteers at each site work hard to provide interesting displays and information. If you go, bring your grandchildren or nieces and nephews with you. They can learn by looking at the pictures and displays, and listening to the docents. Also, you can explain and share your memories and recollections from the past. Unfortunately, we find out that very little local history is taught in history classes today.

t’s okay to visit national parks and museums such as Gettysburg and the Smithsonian. It’s okay to visit Pennsylvania state historical sites such as the Erie Maritime Museum, U.S. Brig Niagara, Daniel Boone Homestead or Drake Well Museum. It’s okay to visit great Allegheny County based museums such as the Carnegie Museum of Art and Museum of Natural History or the Senator John Heinz History Center. But please, please, do not forget about the local treasures located in your own back yard of Beaver County. We have a lot of great historical sites and museums, but many people will admit that they never have visited. There is a wonderful opportunity to visit, as the historical sites will be open for Beaver County History Weekend May 6 and 7. All the details of the celebration start on the front page of the Senior News.
All but one of our historical sites has no admission charge. The volunteers at each site work very hard to raise the funds to preserve these items and pay the bills to keep their doors open for your enjoyment. Please consider making a free will donation during your visit. BCSN

OIF wants the public to know that HHS OIG will not use the HHS OIG Hotline telephone number to make outgoing calls and individuals should not answer calls from 1-800-HHSTIPS (1-800-447-8477). BCSN

Remember, our history can be fragile, so enjoy it while you have the opportunity to do so. Just this year, we lost the Dunlap Mansion in Bridgewater, which was on the National Register of Historic Places. It reportedly was believed to be part of the Underground Railroad. The home fell into disrepair, and though the municipality gave the owner time to bring the home up to code, this did not occur. The municipality decided that demolition of the property was the best for the safety of the community as people were breaking into the home.
