Egg hunts, Easter bunnies and purse parties are a perfect recipe for spring By Valerie McElvy RSVP Director For Beaver County Senior News Spring is the time of year that brings out the kid in all of us. That is why RSVP is holding three—yes, three— Easter egg hunts! The first stop is the RSVP station, Helping Hands of Wayman Chapel’s First Annual Health Fair on April 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in

the church fellowship hall. Weather permitting, the egg hunt for kids will be outside on the church grounds at 1120 Sixth Avenue in New Brighton from noon to 1 p.m. Now, onto the second stop: an egg hunt just for seniors on Tuesday, April 15 at 10 a.m., inside Center at the Mall, next to Hallmark, Beaver Valley Mall.

Last but certainly not least is the “just for kids” Easter egg hunt sponsored by New Brighton Community Life on April 19 at Townsend Park, 610 Third Avenue in New Brighton. By the crack of noon, 3,000 eggs will have been hidden for the children of the area to find! Whew, that Easter Bunny is going to be busy! Continued on page 6

Home Safe Home program has funding to provide home safety improvements for Beaver County seniors

re you or is someone you know having difficulty traveling in and out of the home, moving up and down stairs, or using the bathroom? If so, the Home Safe Home program can help. For more than 13 years, this program has installed hundreds of bathroom grab bars and stair railings, and has constructed many wheelchair ramps throughout the Beaver County region. In addition, the program has constructed sidewalks, remodeled bathrooms, installed stair glides and completed many other safety related home improvements for those experiencing difficulty living at home. Many projects can be funded in all or in part through the Home Safe Home grants process. Project funding is available for individuals ages 60 and older, and program participants will qualify based upon monthly income. Some lower-income seniors may receive the safety installation at no cost, while those with higher incomes will have a co-pay based upon a sliding scale. Project funding is available in Beaver County and western Allegheny County. For those who don’t qualify for funding, the complete Home Safe Home program service is available on a fee basis for clients of any age, just as someone would hire a private company or contractor.

Circle of Friends New Brighton hosts luncheon in honor of Black History Month

ore than 100 people attended a luncheon in honor of Black History Month on February 22 at Circle of Friends New Brighton. The group enjoyed a catered lunch from Mississippi Chicken Shack of Beaver Falls, and entertainment was provided by the Beulah Baptist Church Dance Troupe of Aliquippa. This year’s honorees were Dorothy James, Ruby Golding and Mary Wilson who, among other Freedom Riders, made the trip to join Dr. Martin Luther King in Washington, DC in August of 1963. That March on Washington has long been held as the catalyst for passing the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as well as being the place Dr. King made his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech. All three honorees were given commendations from special guests: Commissioner Joe Spanik, Congressman Keith Rothfus and Janet George, a representative from Senator Elder Vogel’s office. In his remarks, Commissioner Spanik reminded the crowd that in many parts of our nation today, the fight is still being fought to give voting rights to certain groups of people. Congressman Rothfus admired the courage and conviction of those civil rights volunteers who became known as Freedom Riders.

Special speakers at the event also included activist Leanne Spearman, who gave an historic reading and Mtume Imani, an activist and secretary of the Beaver County chapter of the NAACP. Mtume’s presentation was perhaps the most poignant moment of the day; she read a letter written by an African-American woman who was severely beaten and thrown into jail for attempting to register to vote in 1963. “This was 100 years after the Civil War that these events of violence and struggle were still happening—only 50 years ago!” she cited. “Our Black History Month recognition is something we at Circle of Friends see as not only a celebration but as a responsibility,” said executive director Larry Murphy. “It’s to remind all of us that in the 1960s, people were fighting and dying for equality. That was not that long ago.”

An Evening with Hal Linden closes BVCCA 2013-2014 Season The Beaver Valley Community Concert Association season closes Monday, April 28, with An Evening with Hal Linden. Hal Linden spices up the stage with a dose of nostalgia and a dash of legendary star quality. With a 65year career in the entertainment business, Linden is best known for his portrayal of the police precinct captain in the hit television series “Barney Miller,” for which he earned multiple Golden Globe and Emmy nominations. In 1957, he made his Broadway debut in the musical Bells Are Ringing opposite Judy Holliday and has continued to perform in more than 20 Broadway and off-Broadway productions including Pajama Game, A Christmas Carol, Chicago and Cabaret. In 1971, he won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his role in The Rothschilds. Backed by a seven piece band, Linden performs some of America’s greatest songs and Broadway hits. The concert will take place in at the Beaver Falls Middle School auditorium at 7:30 p.m. For those not holding season tickets, adult tickets will be on sale at the door for $20, with student tickets offered at $5. Seniors for Safe Driving If you are age 55 or older and have successfully completed a senior driving education program in the past, you only have to attend a one-day refresher course to renew your insurance discount. If you have never participated in a Senior Driver Improvement Program, you must attend a two-day seminar to earn your automobile insurance discount. The insurance discount is five percent of the total premium for a period of three years. Cost for the course is $15 per person. Growing your own food can be rewarding, fun and delicious By Angela Gentile, Planning Unit Program Monitor Beaver County Office on Aging For Beaver County Senior News I really like to grow vegetables in my garden. It is great to watch the food you are going to consume start out as sprouts and grow to maturity. I meet a lot of gardeners in the county, but it surprises me how few people grow their own food in comparison to the amount of people who have fabulous flower gardens and landscaped yards

Here’s how to get started. You can purchase many of the supplies at the dollar stores, big box retailers or home improvement stores. Get a plastic, terra cotta or ceramic pot with drainage holes. Get a pot at least 12-inches tall so roots can grow well. Purchase some potting soil mix. Regular soil from the ground is too heavy for the container. Fill the pot half way with the potting soil and water the soil. Then fill the pot with potting soil, leave at least one inch from the top. Water the soil again. You water the soil first so when you plant your seed and water it, the seed does not go floating all over the place. Select a packet of herb seeds that you would like to grow. Some people like to grow basil, chives, parsley and oregano in pots. Plant the seed according to the package instructions. For greens, consider something like lettuce, spinach or Swiss chard. Again, plant the seed following the package instructions. Sometimes, you will need to reseed lettuce after you harvest it, plus it can get bitter tasting in the hot weather.

Swiss chard is great because it keeps growing throughout the season. After planting the seed, gently water. Get some fertilizer that you can mix with water to feed the plant, which can be weekly or monthly. You will need to keep your pots in a sunny window or sunny area outside. Outside is good since it is warmer and a better, more natural environment for the plants. Make sure you water regularly as soil in pots will dry out quickly, especially outside. Many herbs and greens will sprout in several days. Check for pests on your plants. In about 55 to 60 days, you will be able to begin harvesting some of your food. Some of you get very excited about purchasing locally grown fruits and vegetables. Several people called the Beaver County Office on Aging in February when there was six inches of snow on the ground to ask when the Senior Farmers Market vouchers will be available. The vouchers will be distributed after June 1. We are completing the distribution schedule and are waiting for the income guidelines from the state. The schedule will appear in the May issue of the Beaver County Senior News. BCSN

Gardeners generally are available to answer any gardening questions.

During this harsh winter, my thoughts always turned to sunshine, flowers, and vegetables fresh from the garden. Now, I can get my senior garden ready for planting, and so can you! Garden plots are available at the senior gardens located on Western Avenue in Brighton Township. The gardens are all tilled in early May and water is available for a small fee.

The best thing about gardening at the site is the new friends you will make while enjoying the fruits of your labor. To request a plot, call the Penn State Extension office at (724) 774-3003 for an application. Once the application is returned to the office, I will call you and meet you at the gardens to show you how to get started. You and several friends may share a plot and work it together. Several gardeners already there have family and friends helping them. BCSN

benches, two sheds to store your tools, and a raised bed garden for those in a wheelchair. New this year will be compost bins provided by Job Training for Beaver County. In addition, Master

Broccoli and Tomato Bake

Calling all pool players...

3 1 T. olive oil 3 1 small onion, thinly sliced 3 1 clove garlic, minced 3 1 carrot, diced 3 1 stalk celery, diced 3 Salt and pepper 3 ¾ lb. broccoli florets, sliced ¼ inch thick 3 1 15-oz. can diced tomatoes 3 1 T chopped green olives 3 2 t maple syrup 3 ¼ cup crumbled goat cheese 3 ¼ cup Parmesan cheese Heat oil in skillet over medium heat. Add onion and garlic, cook and stir for three minutes. Stir in carrots and celery, season with salt and pepper; cook until vegetables begin to soften, about five minutes. Steam broccoli in a saucepan until bright green then place in an 8” x 8” baking dish. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Add diced tomatoes and olives into skillet with onion and carrot mixture. Stir and cook over medium-high heat until sauce thickens, about five minutes. Mix in maple syrup, season with salt and pepper and cook for three minutes. Pour sauce over broccoli in baking dish. Evenly distribute both cheeses on top. Bake until cheese begins to brown, about 20 minutes BCSN.

The book also features Butler County’s own Terry Hanratty, who starred as quarterback at Butler Area High School and was an All-American at Notre Dame before being drafted by the Steelers in 1969. He and Art Rooney Jr. share the opinion that Noll is the most important person in Steelers’ history. “They were mediocre for the first 40 years and they have been winners for the last 40 years,” Hanratty comments in the book. “Noll taught the Rooneys how to run a winning football organization.”

Some other Nollisms: “You only get what you demand.” “If you are even thinking about retiring, it’s time to retire.” He is self-deprecating about his perceived lack of humor: “Germans are not good at telling jokes.” Noll is an admirable fellow, a decent moral man, a good husband and father, and faithful to his Catholic upbringing. He turned 82 this January and has some health challenges that restrict his mobility, as well as some memory loss. He and his wife, Marianne, live in Bonita Springs, Florida. He remains the only coach to claim four Super Bowl championships.
