Friendship Ridge’s Crimson Line Auxiliary is recognized for 50 years of volunteer service The Crimson Line Auxiliary (CLA) was honored for its 50 years of service to the residents of Friendship Ridge at an open house on July 12. The purpose of CLA is to mentor local youth

and promote volunteerism throughout Beaver County. The event was well attended by CLA members past and present, and featured live entertainment, refreshments and a Chinese auction.

y mother likes to remind my sister and me that she is a Virgo. Growing up, we lived comfortably in a nice home, but my mother had lots and lots of rules, procedures and thought processes about a variety of things. She has Revereware pans, which have copper bottoms. They are nice to cook in but after you wash the pan, you need to get the copper cleaner out to shine the bottom. I did not enjoy having to use the copper cleaner. I would ask my mother why would you want cookware that you not only had to wash once, but then had clean again with a special cleaner. She said, “Double the trouble, double the fun.”

My mother required us to sit in the middle of a couch cushion. She did not want us crushing the cushions by sitting on the crack in between the cushions. She made us bend down to the dining room table at eye level to make sure all the crumbs and debris was wiped off. If she later found a spot that was not wiped appropriately, she would take my finger and rub over it to emphasize the importance of her rule. We were required to wipe off everything before returning it to the refrigerator—ketchup, mustard, condiment containers—so everything stayed clean. Regarding the tub of oleo, we were not allowed just to take a chunk out of it, we had to use a butter knife to take a smooth swipe of it.

She did not believe in raising children using baby talk. We did not have boo boos. We had contusions and abrasions. My mother has this weird kinetic energy in her. When she would walk past merchandise in stores, things would just fall off the shelves and racks without her even touching anything. It was not uncommon to be picking up boxes of food, scarves and clothes that would fall on the floor after she passed by. My sister and I hated the next thing the most. One day for every year we would come home from school and would go to our bedroom to find newspaper on the floor with the contents of our nightstand drawers dumped on the paper. She said we had to clean them out. We were not even messy children! My mother laughs about this one now, too. My mother reminds us that she is a Virgo. She said it is probably a good thing that her husband is, too. My mother refers to herself as Queen Mother Elizabeth. My sister and I just call her Ma. BCSN

My mother folds plastic grocery bags perfectly after emptying them from her shopping trip. My sister and I would ask why she takes the time to do this and why not just push them in the cloth sack to hold them? She said that if you put something in the bag to give to someone, you do not want it to look like somebody slept on it.

Tidbits of Beaver County History

2 South Heights Borough is a small community of 475 residents located along the Ohio River, not far from the Ambridge Bridge. The town, originally known as Ethel’s Landing, was a docking point on the river. The name was changed to Shannopin when the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad established a station. Then the town name changed to South Heights, and the railroad station was named South Heights station. 2 Franklin Township is located in the top northeast corner of Beaver County, and it borders Butler and Lawrence counties. Established in 1850, it was known as a farming community. There were farmers, stone masons, stock raisers and grain raisers. In 1814, Dr. Detmar Basse started the Bassenheim Iron Furnace at Old Furnace Road. The Baltimore and Ohio, Pittsburgh and Western and Harmony Short Line railroads had run through the community. With a population of 4052, it is now home to the Zelienople Municipal Airport and the Red Barn Theatre, which features summer plays.

They include I Am Number Four, filmed at Buttermilk Falls, and private residences in Beaver and Monaca; Unstoppable at Horsehead Zinc Plant; Love and Other Drugs at Aliquippa Hospital; The Road at Raccoon Creek State Park; Adventureland at two private residences in Beaver; Graduation at Farmers National Bank in Beaver Falls; King Pin at old Beaver Valley Bowl in Rochester; One for the Money in Ambridge; Wonder Boys in Beaver County; and Gung Ho in Beaver County. 2 Keystone Bakery was opened by Frederick Walters in Beaver in 1859. The company was moved to Bridgewater in 1885. In 1926, Braun Baking Co. acquired Keystone. In 1929, some of the Braun family split the business, and established Keystone Bakery as an independent company. During the 1970s, the Braun family sold the bakery. Ownership changed a few times before it ended up with the Stroehmann Brothers Co. Stroehmann closed the Bridgewater facility in 1985. The building has been repurposed and now is Stone Point Landing, an office building and restaurant. BCSN

History can be a challenge to learn and remember during your youth at school. It seems when you are an adult, you have more time to appreciate history. Here are two websites on which you can enjoy reminiscing about United States history and world history. Both sites have quizzes, also. www.thepeoplehistory.com has snippets of United States history from the 1800s and each decade from the 1920s to 1990s. Plus, there are sections on toys, music, movies, TV, sports and clothes and fashion. It is not a fancy website but the information is brief and quick to read, and there are some pictures. www.historyworld.net makes world history accessible through interactive narratives and timelines. There are 300 narratives on topics such as countries, civilizations, biology, clocks, dance, maps and more. More than 10,000 events are available on searchable timelines. You can enter Italy and the year 2000, and numerous articles will come up on things that took place during that time period. BCSN

Mediterranean Roasted Broccoli and Tomatoes 3 12 ounces broccoli crowns, trimmed and cut into bite-size florets (about 4 cups) 3 1 c grape tomatoes 3 1 T extra virgin olive oil 3 2 cloves garlic, minced 3 1/4 t salt 3 1/2 t freshly grated lemon zest 3 1 T lemon juice 3 10 pitted black olives, sliced 3 1 t dried oregano 3 2 t capers, rinsed (optional) Preheat oven to 450°F. Toss broccoli, tomatoes, oil, garlic and salt in a large bowl until evenly coated. Spread in an even layer on a baking sheet. Bake until the broccoli begins to brown, 10 to 13 minutes. Meanwhile, combine lemon zest and juice, olives, oregano and capers in a large bowl. Add the roasted vegetables; stir to combine. Serve warm. BCSN

Two questions came up often: “Are there other ways to help besides volunteering at a location?” and “Are there things that you need that we could donate?” Yes, many types of items are used at participating RSVP stations that we would love to collect and distribute to them. Here are just a few examples: * Puzzle and fiction books for seniors in nursing homes and skilled facilities * Greeting cards, new and used * Stamps for mailing greeting cards and letters * Gently worn and new children’s clothes and coats * Cleaning supplies such as paper towels, Lysol wipes, large garbage bags and toilet paper * Gently used adult clothing, especially 4x and larger * Trial-size toiletries for emergency hygiene kits * Gas cards for when transportation issues arise

This list could go on and on, but for those of you who are interested in donating tangible items, this is a good start. If you have something else that you would like to donate, I’m sure RSVP can find a place to make good use of it! Also, please remember that monetary donations are always welcome. It could be ear-marked for a specific cause. Let’s say, for example, that you have a passion for helping the elderly but don’t have a particular agency in mind. RSVP would collect your donation, give you a tax receipt and then forward that donation to a participating organization that is in line with your passion. The Juggler A Juggler, driving to his next performance, was stopped by the police. “What are those knives doing in your car?” asked the officer. “I juggle them in my act.”

A guy driving by sees this and says, “Wow, am I glad I quit drinking. Look at the test they’re making you do now!” Lost far from a home A police car pulls up in front of grandma Bessie’s house, and grandpa Morris gets out. The polite policeman explained that this elderly gentleman said that he was lost in the park...and couldn’t find his way home. “ Oy Morris “, said grandma, “ You’ve been going to that park for over 30 years !
