Students from Job Training for Beaver County put their skills to work at Brighton Township’s Senior Gardens For the past three summers, students at Job Training for Beaver County (JTBC) have gotten hands-on experience doing construction activities at the Senior Gardens on Western Avenue in Brighton Township. In 2011, they built a garden shed to house a lawn mower, garden tools and other equipment. Last year, they constructed a pavilion, as well as benches and picnic tables. And this

summer, they added a second, larger shed on the opposite side of the garden. It’s one part of JTBC’s summer high school program that is coordinated with the Beaver County Career and Technology Center. JTBC helps to prepare individuals ages 14 to 21 for success in the workplace by giving them practical training, education and experience about high demand occupations.

During JTBC’s two-week Youth Construction Camp, participants learn basic skills and have the opportunity to explore careers associated with the building trades in a real world situation. “To make what they are learning real, they do a project during the camp,” explains Deborah Newton, executive director of JTBC. Over the years, the Continued on page 4

Students from Job Training for Beaver County put their skills to work at Brighton Township’s Senior Gardens Continued from page 1 students have worked at a variety of places around the county. “We’ve built playhouses, picnic benches, you name it. In 2011, through our community network, we learned that some of the projects our students work on could benefit the Senior Gardens.” Materials for the project were donated as part of a grant by the Southwest Corner Workforce Investment Area Building Trades Industry Partnership. Home Depot and Beaver County Commissioner Joe Spanik also made contributions to the project, which was completed on June 5. On July 3, eight students who completed the construction camp were recognized at an “unveiling” of the new garden shed. Commissioners Spanik and Tony Amadio were at the event,

Each year, the master gardeners develop a demonstration garden at this site to aid and instruct senior gardeners on appropriate gardening methods, including composting, mulching and fertilizing, as well as pest control and organic techniques. New and heirloom varieties of vegetables flourish under the nurturance of the seniors and master gardeners.

Cody Lipinski and instructor Steve Beck work on the shed roof. Continued support from the Beaver County Board of Commissioners and various county agencies is invaluable and has included annual spring tilling, gravel for the driveway and cleanup of accumulated trash from the area. Ellwood man helps seniors keep fit and have fun with ballroom dancing By Gina Mazza For Beaver County Senior News It seems like there isn’t much that Richard Morris can’t do. For more than 40 years, he has danced professionally and taught tap, jazz, ballet and ballroom. He has 35 years of experience as a personal trainer and physical fitness advisor. And as a martial artist, Richard holds a 4th degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, a 1st degree black belt in Kung Fu and a brown belt in Judo. He is also proficient in boxing, kickboxing and the Philippine stick-fighting system of Escrima. On top of all that, Richard is an accomplished bass guitarist and keyboard player. These days, Richard is helping older adults in Beaver County realize that there’s no limit to what they can do, as well. At Circle of Friends and senior centers around town, he teaches ballroom dancing as a means of exercise, recreation and well being. “When I began working with seniors, I immediately noticed that

Originally from Beaver Falls and now a resident of Ellwood City, Richard, 55, has been dancing since the age of four and studying martial arts since age 10. By 25, he had gotten into ballroom dancing

and began teaching this style of dance to seniors at the Fred Astaire Dance Studio in New Brighton. “At that time [30 years ago], the studio’s husband owned a senior high rise and I thought, ‘Why not teach them?’ From there, I branched out to other senior buildings.” These days, you will find Richard instructing active seniors at Circle of Friends in Baden and New Brighton, the Center at the Mall in Beaver Valley Mall, Holy Family Church in New Brighton and Catholic Charities’ senior center “Challenges”, located in Ellwood City. He leads older adults through low-impact aerobics, yoga, tai chi, personal training and line dancing, in addition to ballroom. Richard observes his older students carefully and offers encouragement, regardless of their ability or fitness level. Older adults have two stumbling blocks to participating in exercise classes, he observes: “They are afraid of falling and afraid that they won’t remember [the routines],” he comments. “Seniors think they can’t remember because they’ve been told they can’t. I say, ‘That’s not

true; if you come to class once a week consistently, you will remember.’ Or I will say to my senior students, ‘I’ve been watching you and you really don’t need your cane; you’re just afraid you’re going to fall. But what if I made you strong and agile enough that you weren’t afraid of falling? Then you wouldn’t need that crutch anymore’. Once they gain confidence, they see that that’s true. The benefits include improved cognition, focus, confidence, exercise, stamina and, of course, it’s good exercise.” Richard is also the owner of Richard Lee Morris School of Martial Arts “Arts and Wellness in Motion”, a martial arts school in Ellwood City, where he primarily teaches children ages four to 18. “I always say I’m lucky because I get to teach from ages five to 90,” he says. In 2012, the school was ranked in the top 10 martial arts schools in Pennsylvania. Back in 2002, Richard paved new ground by introducing an after-school martial arts program at Riverside School District and Holy Redeemer School. “I’m now trying to bring martial arts to

Center at the Mall, so seniors can learn self-defense and get all the other benefits of knowing martial arts,” he says.” The combination of martial arts and dance training gives Richard a unique perspective on the human body and its movement. To round out his knowledge base even more, Richard is certified in fitness and nutrition, which allows him to conduct exercise regimens, as well as incorporate nutritional and dietary suggestions. Richard was featured in the March 2001 issue of TIME magazine for his ballroom dance credit course, which he taught at Penn State University in Monaca. He is currently the ballroom dance instructor for the continuing education department at the Community College of Beaver County (CCBC), where he has been an instructor for nearly 20 years. So . . . is there anything that Richard can’t do? “I can’t swim,” he concedes. To learn more about class locations and times, call Richard at (724) 359-9011 or email rlmkarate@zoominternet.net. BCSN

Poems by Wally Clayton, former mailman for the Beaver Post Office I Wonder I wonder what makes the grass so green and the trees grow straight and tall. I wonder what makes the stars so bright, and sometimes not seen at all. I wonder what makes the ocean roar, and the ebb and flow of the tide, and the cold, cold winds that blow from the North, and natures creatures all trying to hide. I wonder what makes the mountain tops, their majestic peaks surveying the land. I wonder what makes the forest so full, and the desert nothing but sand. I wonder what makes the river flow, as it winds around the bend. I wonder what lies beyond the skies, In the heavens that never end. I wonder... Mailman’s Lament Neither rain, nor snow, nor gloom of night, stays me from my appointed rounds. But gnawing acquaintances with dogs, sure do slow me down. Because he’s man’s best friend, they say, it makes you stop and think, does he, or doesn’t he bite, but by then, it’s already too late.

As I walk along the route, letters in my hand, to serve the people in the town, I am at their command. As I come up on a porch, A friendly dog I see, only to find out to my dismay he’s friendly to everyone, but me! “Do you know my dog?”, she’ll say, he won’t bite you know. Oh, yes, we’re gnawing acquaintances, you see. The other day, when you weren’t home, he tore my pants for me. So, I’ll just go about my rounds, and hope they’ll let me be, because a man’s best friend, you know, are only gnawing acquaintances with me.

News You Can Use In last month’s column, I talked a bit about “stuff, stuff and more stuff”—that is, what to do with all that stuff you may have at home and how to declutter your living space. So . . . how have you been doing with thinning out your stuff? Do you have any more available space now? I continue to go through this process in my own house; my spice cupboard is not as full and I have a lot more room in the freezer, which makes it easier to find the food items that I need. I’ve donated numerous items to a charity auction, and I continue to use or “repurpose” items that I currently have at home. Yellowed plastic drinking cups were great to transplant tomatoes and sunflower seedlings for coworkers. A ream of cardstock that I bought for 50 cents several years ago at a church yard sale is now being used to make Christmas cards, which will fit into business-sized envelopes that I have left over from a civic project years ago. I’ve finished reading two more books, gave one to my nephews and another I returned to my sister. It helps to ask for what you need in order to control the volume of stuff in your

Professional organizers suggest that you borrow or rent certain items that you only use once, or once in a while. Every three or four years, I need to scrape my mailbox prior to repainting it, so I borrow my father’s wire brush for a few days to clean it. You can borrow books from one of the public libraries to prevent books piling up at home. Professionals also recommend putting items away where they belong in your home, which also frees up valuable space.

Paying in advance A motorist, driving by a Texas ranch, hit and killed a calf that was crossing the road. The driver went to the owner of the calf and explained what had happened. He then asked what the animal was worth. “Oh, about $200 today,” said the rancher. “But in six years it would have been worth $900, so $900 is what I’m out.” The motorist sat down and wrote out a check and handed it to the farmer.
