Students from Job Training for Beaver County put their skills to work at Brighton Township’s Senior Gardens For the past three summers, students at Job Training for Beaver County (JTBC) have gotten hands-on experience doing construction activities at the Senior Gardens on Western Avenue in Brighton Township. In 2011, they built a garden shed to house a lawn mower, garden tools and other equipment. Last year, they constructed a pavilion, as well as benches and picnic tables. And this
summer, they added a second, larger shed on the opposite side of the garden. It’s one part of JTBC’s summer high school program that is coordinated with the Beaver County Career and Technology Center. JTBC helps to prepare individuals ages 14 to 21 for success in the workplace by giving them practical training, education and experience about high demand occupations.
During JTBC’s two-week Youth Construction Camp, participants learn basic skills and have the opportunity to explore careers associated with the building trades in a real world situation. “To make what they are learning real, they do a project during the camp,” explains Deborah Newton, executive director of JTBC.
