Our 16th annual Christmas Bazaar & Bake Sale will take place on December 7 from 9am to 3:00pm @ our Community Life Center, 118 McMillen Avenue, Beaver Falls. There will be over 60+ vendors, baked goods for sale and the CLC Café where you can purchase a good meal, and our Winter Silent Auction which benefits the Chippewa Meals on Wheels. It houses a 400-foot DCC model operating railroad depicting the late ‘50s and early ‘60s from Ambridge/Pittsburgh local to Wheeling, West Virginia with full scenery, logging area, steel mill, coal and farming operations. Train sets will be given away at random times. Shop their flea market and register for raffle baskets. Open noon to 5 p.m. every weekend in December and through the first weekend of January 2020. Senior News readers like hearing about my latest adventures, and it was a fabulous whirlwind of a summer.

In June, it was off to Poland with my sister, brother-in-law and two nephews as we were part of the tour group from Our Lady of Peace Church in Conway. We started touring the capital city Warsaw and then had a tour of Malbork Castle, one of the largest castles in the world, and we learned about the Knights of the Teutonic Order. Gdansk and its shipyards was cool. You may remember this as the site of the creation of the anti-Communist Solidarity movement in 1980, led by Lech Walesa, which helped liberate Poland from Soviet rule. We saw Torun, a preserved medieval town, which is the birthplace of Nicolaus Copernicus. Wroclaw is known for its old town with a Synagogue, Lutheran Church, Roman Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox Church located near each other. Probably the most fun while in this town was locating and photographing the
hundreds of metal dwarfs located in the streets after dinner. We had a hilarious priest, who is familiar with Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania, give a tour in Czestochowa to see the Black Madonna, which is located in the Jasna Gora Monastery. Next was Krakow, where the late Pope John Paul II served as archbishop. We explored the city and Wawel Castle, the former residence of Polish kings. A tour into the depths of the Wieliczka Salt Mines was fascinating. The facility produced table salt from the 13th century until the early 2000’s. In addition to shafts and passageways, there are beautiful chapels which are used for events and statues carved by the miners. We had a somber visit to Auschwitz, the former concentration camp where many people lost their lives. Yes, they do eat pierogis in Poland. We had them with cheese, meat, mushroom and potato. They were not swimming in butter and onions as we serve them locally but they had some oil and browned onions sprinkled on top. I was home for two weeks to frantically work, mow grass and garden and get the suitcase ready to fly and board a Norwegian Cruise ship to visit the Baltic countries of Denmark, Germany, Finland, Russia, Estonia and Sweden.. My travel companions and I arrived a day early in Copenhagen, Denmark and had a delightful half day in Tivoli Gardens. It was founded in 1843, and it is an amusement park with beautiful architecture, historic buildings, lush gardens and restaurants which take you back to another era. At dark, the destination is beautifully illuminated with thousands of colored lights. We took advantage of touring in each port. I visited Wismar, Germany, a medieval city with a busy working harbor and a great brewery to sample beers.
Next was Helinski, Finland, a city with lots of parks, and we had a sea tour to view its numerous islands. The next two days were spent in Saint Petersburg, Russia, the country’s second largest city and cultural center. We arranged for a private guide and toured Peterhof Palace; Church of the Resurrection, built in memory of Alexander II who was assassinated; and the State Hermitage Museum. Our guide was open to answering questions about life in Russia from schooling, medical care, work opportunities, transportation and travel. She took us to great local restaurants. We ate Georgian, including khinkali, beautifully twisted knobs of dough, which can be stuffed with meat and spices, cheese or mushrooms. The trick is to eat them without spilling the broth inside all over you. She took us to a traditional Russian restaurant, and I had stuffed cabbage. She was amused when I told her that we call it pigs in a blanket. Next, it was off to Tallinn, Estonia. This capital is a preserved medieval city, and it happens to be a digital city. The last stop was to Stockholm, Sweden. We saw the Vasa Museum, which features a preserved 17th center ship decorated with carved sculptures. It was sad that it sunk on its maiden voyage. The city is known for its delicious baked goods, and we ended our city tour sampling some sweet treats. Stay tuned, I have some exciting plans for 2020.
