Protect yourself from charity fraud and other scams by being aware are vulnerable to financial thieves and predators. And when a natural disaster or man-made tragedy strikes, fundraising efforts started popping up online; we want to contribute, but how do we separate legitimate fundraisers from scams? Once you do make a donation, how can you ensure that your money is actually helping the people in need? These are the questions that the Senior Justice Division can help you obtain answers to. For starters: • Don’t give out your personal financial information, such as your Social Security number or passwords, to anyone who solicits a contribution. Scam artists may use this information to steal your identity. • Be wary of charities with names that are similar to familiar or nationally known organizations. Some phony charities use names or websites that sound or look like those of respected, legitimate organizations. District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala, Jr.

Last year in Allegheny County, a staggering 12,000 people

(just like you!) lost nearly $8 million by falling prey to various scams. A thief can come at you many ways—by phone, mail and email, at your door or through the Internet. Especially at this “open enrollment” time of year when correspondence regarding medical insurance and Medicare/Medicaid is in circulation, scammers can pretend to be legitimate companies and charities asking for information that may give them access to your bank or credit card accounts.

Help is available for seniors in Allegheny County. The Senior Justice Division within the office of District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala, Jr. can assist you in pushing back against criminals who victimize older adults through crimes of fraud, abuse and neglect. In fact, within the past 18 months, more than 5,000 seniors have been counselled about scams by the Senior Justice Division and, as a result, have saved about $9 million in losses. Still, most fraud (nearly half) goes unreported, so the actual numbers are even higher. Why is Allegheny County a target for scammers? Longtime Pittsburgh residents are legendary for their generosity and support of worthwhile causes. We give more per capita than probably anywhere else in the country. Allegheny County also has the highest percentage of people born before 1958. That means assets in the form of bank accounts, pensions and property, along with a high percentage of people who

• Determine if a charity is legitimate by using the IRS’ Tax Exempt Organization Search tool at: https://www.irs.gov/ charities-non-profits/tax-exempt-organization-search. • Don’t give or send cash. For security and tax purposes, make your donations by check, credit card or another way that provides documentation of the transaction. The Federal Trade Commission tracks various scams and publishes an annual list of what they call the “Dirty Dozen.” Charity fraud has made it to number five on their list. Angel Fund brightens the holidays of Kane Only 500 tickets are sold, and they sell out quickly. residents once more

To send a donation to the Angel Fund, call (412) 422-6050 or mail a check made payable to the “Kane Foundation Angel Fund” to Kane Foundation, 955 Rivermont Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15207. To purchase a ticket, call (412) 422-6050, or stop by the Allegheny County Courthouse, 436 Grant Street, Room 101; the County Office Building, 542 Forbes Avenue; or any of the four Kane Regional Centers in Glen Hazel, McKeesport, Ross Township and Scott Township.

The Kane Community Living Centers in Scott Township,

Ross Township, McKeesport and Glen Hazel are sponsoring their 14th annual Angel Fund Stocking Raffle this month. The goal of the Angel Fund is to brighten the lives of every Kane resident—particularly those who have no family or friends to visit during the holidays—and make the season a special time of year for them. Near the holiday, each of the thousand-plus residents in all Kane facilities is presented with an Angel Gift. In order to raise monies for the fund, the Kane Foundation hosts the Stocking Raffle. The items in the large stocking (most donated by local businesses and families) can be won by purchasing a raffle ticket. The list of goodies in this year’s “stocking” is quite impressive—everything from gift certificates for overnight stays at resort hotels and fine dining at local restaurants to skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, golf and pool admission at Allegheny County parks, and much more. A small group of Kane Foundation volunteers has worked tirelessly to secure prizes for the raffle, select the raffle items and plan the presentation of the residents’ gifts.

North Hills Cares connects families with resources for urgent needs like hunger and education By Anne Linaberger For Pittsburgh Senior News

able to see was on the inside of each child: full stomachs and full hearts, thanks to the Summer Lunch Program launched by North Hills Cares. The lunch program served 1,200-plus meals to kids in a community where one in four families are considered “food insecure”—meaning they don’t have reliable access to affordable, nutritious food. North Hills Cares was founded a little less than two years ago by a group of parents who wanted to keep giving back to their community after their own children graduated high school. The lunch program is just one way the organization is fulfilling its mission to make a difference in the lives of people in the northern suburbs of Pittsburgh, connecting them with resources that meet pressing needs like hunger and barriers to education.

The group has launched a number of projects to make sure nothing stops students from getting the education they deserve. They’ve purchased new, collected and refurbished new and used graphing calculators for high school students who wouldn’t be able to take STEM courses without them. Many families can’t afford the $125 price tag. The group has purchased tool kits for students attending A.W. Beattie Career Center. The students themselves must buy their

own carpentry or cosmetology kits, which prevents some from taking advantage of valuable career training. North Hills Cares’ summer camps for pre-school, pre-K and early elementary students who are learning English as a Second Language has given these kids a leg up as they enter school. The organization has also funded summer school and college in high school courses for students whose families can’t afford the tuition. One school administrator said of a high school senior whose NHC-paid summer school courses allowed the student to graduate: “To see the student and the parent who were so distraught in May, now excited and teary-eyed about future possibilities as a result of your support, is priceless.” Making sure no child or family goes hungry is also a passion for North Hills Cares. One of the group’s first projects was building a Little Free Pantry, a “take what you need, leave what you can” emergency food box located next to Scholl’s Bike Shop in West View. The group also sponsors pop-up produce stands at the Allegheny County Community College North Campus and a low-income senior high rise, and supports the in-school pantries and toiletries closets at CCAC and local schools. In addition to helping individuals and families, North Hills Cares is committed to making sure the whole community benefits from the organization’s efforts. For the second year, they will sponsor “A Community of Music”, an all-day showcase of student musical groups representing school districts throughout the northern suburbs. This year’s event is Saturday, December 7 with one concert in the afternoon and one in the evening. (Visit northhillscares.com for details.) In addition to showcasing the area’s talented student musicians, people who attend are encouraged to bring single-serve, non-perishable food items that are distributed to the school districts’ backpack programs. These programs provide students with food to take home on weekends and holidays, making sure no child goes hungry when school is out. Allegheny County older athletes compete in a variety of Senior Games events Many of the participants compete in multiple events, as is the case with John Werthman, 73, of Baldwin Borough. John joined in the games after retirement about five years ago, and his wife, Eileen, 73, participates as well. This year, they played basketball, darts, cycling, Frisbee toss, softball throw and the walk-a-thon, and medaled in most of these events. “We enjoy taking part in the games,” John comments. “It’s healthy to stay active and it sets a good example for our grandchildren. We’re not ready for the rocking chair. We’re pretty active.” To join in the fun or find out more information, contact one of the 14 City of Pittsburgh Healthy Active Living Centers near you, or call (412) 422-6401.

A banquet was held on October 18 at the Market House on the South Side to celebrate the winners and distribute their medals. Joe Namath recounts his Beaver County childhood, along with life’s highs and lows, in new autobiography

Sports legend and media / movie superstar After his local high school graduation, Namath went on to attend the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. As early as his sophomore year, under coach Paul “Bear” Bryant, he led the Crimson Tide to a 10-1 season as the starting varsity quarterback.

It all began in 1960 with a long snap behind the line of scrim-

mage. That year, Joe Willie Namath, a senior at Beaver Falls High School, ultimately punted his Tigers to a WPIAL state championship. Years later, he would “guarantee” a Super Bowl III victory for the New York Jets, accomplish a stellar 13-year NFL career then flash his by-then famous smile on TV’s and Hollywood’s screens. The former New York Jets quarterback, Super Bowl MVP and Beaver County native, now 76, chronicles these highs (as well as many lows) in his new autobiography, All the Way: My Life in Four Quarters, available at all major book retailers and online at Amazon.com. The son of Rose and John Andrew Namath, a steelworker—and the youngest of four sons (with an older adopted sister)—Joe mixes in memories of growing up in Beaver Falls, which prepared him for his future destiny as both a professional athlete and a TV/movie personality.

After earning his degree, Namath—the first overall selection in the AFL draft—chose the New York Jets and was offered the most lucrative contract in football history at the time. With that $427,000 agreement and a move to New York, “Broadway Joe” was born. Upon entering the NFL in 1965, Namath quickly gained this moniker after his charismatic mug was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated. That first season, he was named AFL Rookie of the Year, earning 18 touchdowns in 13 games. In his off time, Namath began to make TV appearances on the Dean Martin Show, The Tonight Show, the Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour, and more—further fueling his popularity beyond sports. Then in January 1969, QB Joe spurred the Jets to a 16-7 victory over the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III, still regarded to this day as one of the greatest upsets in US sports history. (The publication of his book comes at the 50th anniversary of that momentous win.) He was a Jet until 1976 then was traded to the St. Louis Rams, where he played for one season. Namath was the first New York Jet to retire his number (12). Even before his Hall of Fame career reached its conclusion, Namath had found a second home on the screen. He continued to make frequent television and talk show appearances,

It’s not as big a challenge as it used to be, because it’s not a part of my life. I don’t even think about it.” Namath also opens up about his parents’ divorce, his suspension at Alabama due to injuries, his decision to check into rehab (he hasn’t had a drink since) and much more. Through it all, Joe has never forgotten his western Pennsylvania roots. In fact, when he was elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio in 1985, who did he ask to present him? Larry Bruno, his football coach from Beaver Falls High School, where it all began. To learn more, visit JoeNamath.org, Joenamathfanshop.com or follow Facebook.com/JoeNamath.

and endorsed some of the top products of the day, including Schick razors, Noxema shaving cream, Brut Cologne and Ovaltine. Namath played himself on the award-winning Brady Bunch, and teamed with George Carlin on The Flip Wilson Show, Lucille Ball on Here’s Lucy, and Dan Rowan and Dick Martin on Rowan & Martin’s Laugh In. He further cemented his widespread appeal in Hollywood productions like C.C. and Company, Chattanooga Choo Choo and The Last Rebel. His iconic life was the subject of the 2012 documentary Namath. Namath doesn’t just write about the good times in his new book. He speaks candidly about his years after the gridiron in which he nearly drank himself to death following his divorce to his ex-wife, Deborah.

“The drinking was what would kick my butt for a long time,” he writes, noting that he had gone off alcohol for more than 13 years while he was married. Their divorce in 2000 set him off the wagon. “I believe any of us can be brought to our knees whether from physical or emotional pain. Over the years, I learned how fragile we humans can be.

“When I fell back into the drinking, I was basically alone again in a sense.” Once in recovery, he had a revelation: “I learned that I had used my divorce as an excuse to go back to drinking.
