RSVP awards luncheon features an “afternoon at the Oscars” “An Afternoon at the Oscars” was the theme for the 29th annual RSVP Recognition Luncheon, and it certainly was a star-studded occasion! Dr. Shelena Gibbs McElvy was both eloquent and gracious as master of ceremonies for the afternoon. Not only did she keep the event moving smoothly, she also engaged the audience in interesting Oscar
trivia. Avis Curenton impersonated Oprah Winfrey and greeted nearly every one of the 200 guests. Some of the guests impersonated celebrities like Audrey Hepburn and Stedman Graham. But I think everyone would agree that the highlight of the afternoon was the entertainment. The first to sing was the “Lemmon Sisters.” Yes, they were
impersonators, but three RSVP board members— Cindy Skiles (Dianne Lennon), Terri DeChellis (Kathy Lennon) and Joyce Sipes (Janet Lennon)—gave the audience lots of laughs with their rendition of “I Think I’m Going Out of My Head.”

RSVP awards luncheon features an “afternoon at the Oscars” Continued from page 1 The second act was none other than RSVP’s Valerie McElvy impersonating Diana Ross and her Supremes:, Cheryl King (Florence Ballard) and Tina Genes (Mary Wilson) from the Franklin Center staff. They brought the house down with their hilarious rendition of “Stop in the Name of Love.” RSVP works with more than 70 organizations throughout Beaver County by helping them find volunteers to assist them as they carry out their missions to serve the Beaver County area. Each year, one of those stations is recognized for their outstanding commitment to the area. This year, the award was presented to the American Red Cross, a worldwide institution in which all societies have equal status and share equal responsibilities and duties in helping each other. Its purpose is to protect life and health, and to ensure respect for all human beings. It promotes mutual understanding, friendship, cooperation and lasting peace among all people.

Each year, the stations where RSVP volunteers serve submit their nominations for the “Volunteer of the Year” award. This year, Carol Yannachione from the Beaver County Office on Aging (BCOA) received the honors; five people nominated Carol for her commitment to volunteerism. She volunteers weekly and puts in many hours to help out at BCOA. Her duties include answering a multi-line phone system, organizing card files and sorting paperwork. “Carol is a wonderful volunteer who puts in a lot of hours at our office and we are extremely lucky to have her here at the Beaver County Office on Aging,” says Leslie Lotito.

t’s all about the holidays this month at RSVP, and we could sure use your help! Each year RSVP has a tradition of serving the young and the not-so-young of Beaver County in hopes of making the holiday season just a little bit brighter for the less fortunate neighbors living in our communities.
RSVP collects and distributes toys for three groups of children: the children of inmates, those attending Head Start, and the youngsters who come to have “Breakfast With Santa”, which is sponsored by Franklin Center. Some of these children would not receive one gift at Christmastime if it were not for our generous volunteers. Donations of toys and other small gifts that are new and unwrapped would be greatly appreciated.

hristmas is the celebration of the birth of Christ. Many traditions exist surrounding the celebration, and often they are based on family cultures and heritage, which impact activities, food and customs.

Traditions are great. As I share some of my holiday traditions with you in this article, I hope you will reminisce, especially with your children and grandchildren, about the traditions that are special to you and your family.
Another big tradition is baking sweet treats for the holidays. Remember when your children were small and they wanted to help make the cookies? Sometimes, it turned into a big mess! Those were happy times regardless of the mess. Kids love to bake and make extra cookies to leave for Santa on Christmas Eve. Pizzelles are my favorite cookie to make. My secret is using very ultra mini chocolate chips from Wilbur Chocolates in Lititz, Pennsylvania. It is extra good chocolate! Is there a special cookie, cake or pie your family and friends look forward to when they come to your house? Make sure to keep the tradition going by passing on the recipe. Speaking of leaving cookies for Santa, did you ever take your children or grandchildren to see Santa?
A big tradition for most families is Christmas Eve and Christmas dinner. Remember the aroma in the house when everything is cooking and everyone is anxiously waiting for that special meal and homemade desserts? Maybe out-of-state relatives come for the traditional holiday meal. Many families have the custom of serving the seven fishes on Christmas Eve. My family, as well, hosts this Italian custom. On Christmas Day, my paternal

How about having photos taken with Old St. Nick? Many families experience pictures with Santa that turned out just perfect. However, some have that one photo when one of the children was crying, deathly afraid of Mr. Santa Clause! Do you have any of those photos? Show them to the family this year. While showing your photos, take a moment and write on the back the names of people in the picture. Looking at old photos is always good for a laugh and fond memories. Christmas cards have been a tradition for a very long time and a way to keep in contact with loved ones. The first Christmas cards were commissioned by Sir Henry Cole in London in May 1843. The central picture showed three generations of a family raising a toast to the card’s recipient. On either side were scenes of charity, with food and clothing being given to the poor. Making Christmas cards is my one personal tradition that is very near and dear to my heart. I enjoy sending hand-made Scherenschnitte (German paper cutting) Christmas cards. I cut out designs using scissors and an exacto knife and then glue the cut-out to blank cards. I include a Bible verse and write a holiday message. Homemade cards may be eventually replaced by electronic communications. I hope not. Many people make homemade cards and they are a nice greeting to receive through the mail. Traditions can bring family and friends together. There is a feeling of great comfort in our own personal traditions. Embrace them, share them and enjoy them. She’s been known to wrap a lot of presents! But more importantly, she was instrumental in finding a lot of volunteers to help with the wrapping, especially many of her friends.

4 4 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into one-inch cubes 4 ¼ cup melted butter or oil 4 ¼ cup brown sugar 4 ½ -1 t. chili powder, to taste 4 2 t. seasoning salt, to taste 4 Black pepper to taste 4 1/8 – ¼ t. cayenne pepper, to taste
2 Buttermilk Falls is a scenic 40–foot sandstone formation and waterfall located at Route 18 and First Avenue in Homewood. It is geologically recognized as home to Homewood Sandstone, used locally in bridge piers, tunnels, roadways and construction of Western Penitentiary in Pittsburgh. As the story goes, a group of Civil War soldiers and their wives were having a picnic in the area. Raising their buttermilk-filled glasses to toast after the picnic, they named the waterfall Buttermilk Falls. 2 Brady’s Run Park sure has evolved since it was established on June 17, 1946, and had a new addition in 19571958. The largest of the county parks at nearly 2,000 acres, it is situated along Route 51 in Brighton and Patterson townships. It is more than just picnic
shelters with charcoal grills, along with swimming and fishing areas. There are 10 trails, including a walker’s loop, mountain bike trailhead and Calland Arboretum. Recreation activities include a playground, 500-person capacity lodge, maple syrup camp area for maple syrup operations in the spring, horse arena, horse shoe courts, softball and baseball fields, outdoor basketball courts, in-line roller hockey rink, outdoor tennis court and action skate park. The indoor recreation facility has the ice arena for ice hockey and skating, indoor tennis courts and indoor walking and running track. A newer addition to the site is the dog park. Plus, the Beaver County Recycling Center is located within the park. Just think of all the things you have done there in your lifetime. BCSN

On a tray, starting at the bottom, alternate a row of cherry tomatoes and a row of cut up cheeses. Make each row bit smaller than the previous row, to form a triangle resembling a Christmas Tree. After the triangle is made, lay a little bit of lettuce or broccoli pieces in between several rows of tomatoes and cheese for a little color (optional). Another option would be to substitute a row of cubed ham for a row or two of cheese. Finish the bottom by putting a cube of cheese at the bottom of the tree in middle of row of cheese to look like a tree stand. Top off the tree for a ball of mozzarella or a cube of cheese in the shape of a star. Serve with vegetable dip. It’s an easy, colorful, festive way to serve vegetables over the holidays. The very best thing about this recipe is: No cooking is necessary! Your guests will love it. BCSN

In bowl, mix sweet potatoes with butter or oil. Add remaining ingredients and toss to coat. Place onto greased baking dish to hold potatoes in one layer. Bake uncovered at 400 degrees for 22-25 minutes, until potatoes are tender. Turn potatoes after 15 minutes. BCSN

2 The Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 862, will hold a Christmas Vigil at Quay Park, Beaver, starting at 6 p.m. December 24 through noon December 25.
