Volunteering provides benefits to physical health

Volunteering is good for your health and well being By Valerie McElvy RSVP Director For Beaver County Senior News Whether or not you are still in the work force, finding time to volunteer is often difficult. But did you know that volunteering can actually help to keep you healthy? Volunteering helps fight depression A key risk factor for seniors is depression and social isolation. Volunteering keeps you in regular contact with others, which can help you develop a solid support system that can be very beneficial when going through challenging times. Working with pets and other animals has also been shown to improve mood and reduce stress and anxiety. Volunteering increases self-confidence

Volunteering helps you stay physically healthy. Volunteering is good for your health at any age, but it’s especially beneficial in older adults. Studies have found that those who volunteer have a lower mortality rate than those who do not, even when considering factors like the health of the participants. Volunteering has also been shown to lessen symptoms of chronic pain or heart disease. Limited mobility does not have to stand in the way of volunteering Whether it is due to a lack of transportation, a disability or other reasons, many people prefer to volunteer via phone, computer or some other project that can be done from home. Do you like to knit or crochet? Perhaps making phone calls to the sick or homebound would appeal to you. Are you a writer or graphic designer? There are many organizations that could use your help. These are just a few examples of volunteer projects that can be done from home. To inquire about volunteering with RSVP, call (724) 378-7547 or email vmcelvy@ franklincenter.org. BCSN

Angela opens the faucet and cabinet door to protect pipes during the extreme cold.

• If water pipes are prone to freezing, keep cabinet doors open near the pipes to allow warm air from the home to easily reach them. Open water faucets far enough to let water slowly drip from them, and they are less likely to freeze if water continuously flows through them. Wrap pipes with insulation.

Put your best foot forward this spring

S

pring is right around the corner. It’s the time of year when we are shaking off the cold winter blues and thinking more about new spring styles, bright colors, walking outside and maybe even traveling. To keep moving ahead this spring, we must be steady on our feet! As we become older, it is important to be aware that our balance may not be as good as it used to be. If we are not steady on our feet, we may fall and sustain serious injuries. We are all at risk of falling; however, there is a difference if we fall at an older age. As we age, there is a higher risk that falls can result in hip, spine or forearm fractures. The recovery time is also much longer. Falling is NOT a normal part of aging and many falls can be prevented. In order to be proactive so a fall does not spoil your ability to enjoy the outdoors year, please join us at Healthy Steps for Older Adults program. Trained staff and volunteers have already educated approximately 750 people in Beaver County through the Healthy Steps program. Some of their responses have been: “I learned something I didn’t know before and had fun”, “The time went so fast” and “I enjoyed meeting other people, and appreciated the breakfast and nutritional lunch.” Through a brief assessment, you will receive specific information about the changes you can make to increase your balance and strength and lead a productive and active life. Topics included in the training session are:

he Beaver County Office on Aging has funds available to help support local caregivers through education, benefits counseling, monthly reimbursement and an annual caregiver recognition luncheon. Here is an example of how the program can assist caregivers. Jake is the primary unpaid caregiver for his wife, June, who has had dementia for several years. He provides most of the daily hands-on care for June. He does private pay for some added assistance. Jake hires his neighbor, Jill, to sit with June every Thursday evening so he can go to his church meeting. He also hires an aide from a local home care agency to come three times a week to help June get into the shower. Jake purchases adult diapers, as June has started to have daily bladder accidents. Working with his care manager, he recently had a ramp installed. At the end of each month, Jake submits receipts showing the amount he had paid his neighbor and the care agency for their work. He also submits receipts showing the cost of

the incontinence supplies he purchased. The following month he receives a check reimbursing him for 90 percent of his costs up to $500. He was able to get reimbursement for $1,800 of the $2,000 he spent to have the ramp built. Jake has read several of the caregiver books provided by the care manager. He attended the annual recognition luncheon in May and enjoyed the lunch, educational speakers and gift bags. He is able to call his care manager when he has questions or needs more information. Caregivers cannot receive payment of any kind for the care they provide to the individual. Sometimes applicants think that the Caregiver program will pay them for the work they do. This is not possible. The program reimburses the primary unpaid caregiver for the cost they expend to purchase approved services and supplies for the care receiver. Verification of income and assets is part of the assessment and help to determine the amount of reimbursement. If you are a caregiver and think you might benefit from this program, call the Information and Referral Department at (724) 847-2262. Let them know that you would like to be evaluated for the Family Caregiver Program. BCSN

Suzanne Roberts, 93, stays active, inquisitive and finds time to give back Continued from page 1 Working with children has been a cornerstone of Roberts’ life work. She has received international recognition for her landmark therapy with children and adults suffering from emotional disorders. Her unique methods were established while working with a group of Navajos on an Indian reservation, and focused on building up individuals’ self-esteem by emphasizing their abilities rather than their disabilities. She furthered her impression on the field of psychiatry by pursuing a master’s degree in education at Antioch University late into her 50’s. Expanding her knowledge and education on the subject led her to applying her techniques to individuals in hospitals across the East Coast. The attention her work received led her to present at the International Congress of Child Psychiatry, where doctors from Scandinavia invited her to demonstrate her methods in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Australia and areas across the United States. A documentary was made to illustrate the implication of her work and the outstanding progress.

Roberts has also devoted much of her time to her acting career. For more than 50 years, she could be found performing in theaters across the eastern United States. At age 75, she decided to step away from the stage to pursue her love for acting in an entirely different way. Her passion to help others and her adoration for theater cultivated into the Suzanne Roberts Cultural Development Fund. The fund offers an incredible amount of financial support and opportunity to more than 40 Philadelphia area theater and dance companies. Roberts created a television program in an attempt to fill the gap in programming that she identified for people over the age of 45. As the creator and host of “Seeking Solutions with Suzanne”, a nationally syndicated information and entertainment show targeted to the old-

er generations, Roberts is a role model who provides seniors with information to enrich their lives and broaden their medical knowledge. The show can be seen regularly on Reinventing Your Life TV in markets throughout the United States. The show covers topics ranging from Alzheimer’s to Pilates, same-sex marriage and the latest fads in diet and nutrition. Fearless and forthright, Roberts has demonstrated everything from belly dancing to performing with the Opera Company of Philadelphia and Pennsylvania Ballet, ridden a HarleyDavidson motorcycle and even filmed her own cataract removal surgery. To date, she has received more than 21 awards. It is no wonder why the Women’s Image Network honored Roberts for her extraordinary accomplishments with one of the most prestigious awards in the television industry: The Lifetime Achievement Award.

is particularly proud of her family’s efforts to support cutting edge medical research. Among which is their donation to The Hospital of the University Of Pennsylvania and The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, which made possible the acquisition of five proton therapy machines offering critically ill patients the most innovative form of cancer treatment available today. This past fall, Roberts gave a $2 million gift to Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore that will be used to establish the Suzanne Roberts Native American Dream Fund at the school’s Center for American Indian Health. The fund will focus on helping Johns Hopkins Center take measureable steps in demonstrating, packaging and scaling public health interventions to improve the health, education and economic status of American Indian youth, their families and communities.

Roberts’ passion for helping others goes well beyond her contributions to the performing arts and television. She

Another achievement that Suzanne can boast about is her successful 73year marriage to husband Ralph. The

two can point to many reasons their union has thrived for so long, and chief among them is their continual interest in learning new things. Suzanne says, “After 73 years, we have learned by lots of experience that marriage is all about the give and take and compromise. You can’t always have things your way. Having a sense of humor helps too and not taking life too seriously. If you have an argument, and they are inevitable in any relationship, don’t try to solve it while you’re emotionally charged. You must wait until you have both calmed down so you can talk rationally when trying to figure out a compromise.” Together the Roberts’ have raised five children and consider among their proudest achievements that fact that each of them has pursued his or her passion in life while never losing sight of the importance of giving back. Their desire to expose and educate their children about different cultures sparked travel to some unconventional locales. One summer the entire family volunteered on the Navajo reservation, which pro-

Suzanne’s desire to instill her children with curiosity, empathy, appreciation and respect for others has marked her own storied life, and inspires her still today.
