A compounding pharmacy and a pharmacy consulting business soon followed. On-site compounding allows the pharmacist to mix drugs to fit the unique needs of each patient. “This may be done for medically necessary reasons, such as to change the form of the medication from a solid pill to a liquid, to avoid a non-essential ingredient that the patient is allergic to, or to obtain the exact dose needed,” Bob explains. Bob knows that when customers are well served, they remember the experience. “I waited on one patient who had to fill a ‘script for blood pressure pills, and he had lost the prescription and had no idea what to do. He had gone to a chain drug store and was told the insurance wouldn’t cover it so he’d have to pay cash. Then one of his family members told him to come here. I called his doctor and explained what had happened. That patient was able fill the ‘script for a little over what their copay would have been--$6 instead of $60. Keen-Age News . . . For Beaver County’s Active Seniors Beaver County Office on Aging

It’s a little cold out there

By Angela Gentile, Planning Unit Program Monitor Beaver County Office on Aging For Beaver County Senior News “What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness?” -John Steinbeck Older adults tend to hibernate indoors during the winter months. The cold weather and icy, snowy conditions are to blame! Although most of you are aware from my past writings in Senior News that I am always out and about seeking the next adventure, I will agree that our typical blustery Pennsylvania winter sometimes necessitates just staying home and behaving ourselves. Nonetheless, day after day, it can get a little dull, dreary and lonely and going somewhere and being amongst people is the perfect remedy for the wintertime rut. So, if you are safely able to transport yourself or get a ride with a friend/ relative or even the DART bus, you may want to consider finding your warm scarf, gloves, hat, earmuffs, and putting one foot in front of the other and heading out the door.

We are very fortunate that Beaver County Office on Aging has amazing senior centers in Baden, New Brighton and the Center at the Mall in the Beaver Valley Mall. There is so much to do for all interests and abilities. It is a great place to reacquaint with old friends and meet new people. I guarantee that you will find something to your liking and if not, speak with one of the friendly managers about creating a special club or program with something that peaks your interest. Plan to attend the Day at the Mall Valentine’s Day celebration February 14 from 10 a.m. to noon at Center at the Mall. The play “The Great Gatsby” is currently in production at Lincoln Park. The performances are usually terrific and tickets are always reasonably priced at $20. How long has it been since you went bowling? Center Lanes has a senior discount of $4 per person/per game. When the roads are clear and temperature/wind chill are accommodating, recruit a friend and venture into Allegheny County to visit the Carnegie Museums, which include the museums of art and natural history, the Science Center and the Andy Warhol Museum. It makes for a great day trip and do not forget to stop for lunch.

For those of you feeling a little more adventurous, go ahead and contact a local travel agent and plan a getaway trip. The excitement of planning and anticipation will keep your mood bright and cheery. I usually do not plan my trips in the winter months but had the opportunity in the beginning of January to travel to San Antonio, Texas, to see my nephew Patrick graduate from Air Force Basic Training at Lackland Air Force Base. The weather lingered between the 30’s and 60’s, and it was pleasant compared to the single-digit and below-zero weather back in Beaver County. It was refreshing to get away. The proud aunt would be remiss not to mention that my nephew graduated with honors. I hope you have a Happy Valentine’s Day and Happy February! Funds are available to support local caregivers pay for additional assistance, this could be the program for you.

By Tesi Dye Care Management Supervisor Beaver County Office on Aging For Beaver County Senior News Caregivers provide for the health and wellbeing of their family members, friends and neighbors. The Beaver County Office on Aging currently has funds available to help support local caregivers. The Caregiver Support Program provides monthly reimbursement, benefits counseling, access to a library of educational material and the ongoing support of a care manager. Each year, the program sponsors a recognition luncheon for caregivers that includes guest speakers, prizes and entertainment. patients. Plans are to continue these educational one-day seminars to enlighten and provide tips for caregivers. Are you caring for a loved one and privately paying for in home help? Do you purchase a large amount of incontinence supplies? Are you thinking of installing a stair glide or purchasing a lift chair for your loved one so they can remain at home? If you are the primary caregiver, see and assist your loved one daily, receive no type of payment for the care you provide and are using your funds to

Caregivers cannot receive payment of any kind for the care they provide to the individual. Sometimes applicants think that the Caregiver program will pay them for the work they do. This is not possible. The program reimburses the primary unpaid caregiver for costs they expend to purchase approved services and supplies for the care receiver. Verification of income and assets is part of the assessment and helps to determine the amount of reimbursement. If you are a caregiver and think you might benefit from this program, call the Information and Referral Department at (724) 847-2262 or (888) 548-2262 and let them know that you would like to have a home visit and assessment to determine how this program can benefit you and the individual you care for. Beaver County History Tidbits

Rock Out in Red for February Senior Day

• Prior to 1895, Beaver County did not have any hospitals. Physicians treated patients in their homes, and people needing surgery were referred to Pittsburgh or Cleveland hospitals. Minor surgery or emergency major surgeries were done in homes or the physicians’ offices. As the railroad and manufacturing plants started locating in the county, local citizens, a women’s organization and the Medical Society recognized the need for a hospital to handle potential accidents. The Merchants Hotel in Beaver Falls was acquired and the Beaver Valley Hospital opened January 1, 1895. Several years later, the hospital moved to New Brighton.

“Rock Out in Red” at Day at the Mall in celebration for Valentine’s Day and heart awareness. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on February 14 inside Center at the Mall in the Beaver Valley Mall, next to Hallmark. Participants will receive a Valentine’s treat and carnation at registration, while supplies last. Rock to the oldies with DJ “sounD Judgment” Chuck Ott. Visit all the vendors to learn about services and program available to older adults, and get your blood pressure checked. Enjoy a cup of coffee and a doughnut. The event, sponsored by the Beaver County Office on Aging and premier sponsors Medic Rescue and Concordia Visiting Nurses, is the number one resource in Beaver County for personal, on-the-spot consultation and information for older adults all in one convenient location. BCSN

• The second hospital opened in the county was the Beaver County General Hospital in Rochester. The first building was a residence remodeled to serve as a hospital, accommodating up to 15 patients. Physicians operated it as a semi-private hospital from 1899 until 1902, when it was turned over to the public and a lay board of directors was elected. The hospital grew to a 150-bed facility. In 1908, the name was changed to Rochester General Hospital. BCSN
