Sponsored in part by Beaver County Office on Aging has touched more than 56 families in Beaver County. Roxsan’s Dream Fund In 2009, the Angels R’ Us program expanded to include the Roxsan’s Dream Fund, sponsored by the Roxsan Betters Albanese Foundation. Through this fund, children’s dreams are granted. The children are/ or their parents are asked to write an essay answering the question, “My $500 Dream is?” The mission committee of Beaver County Cancer & Heart Association reviews each essay and awards $500 to each child at an annual luncheon. In 2019, 12 children received awards; for example, Elizabeth, age 15, in remission from leukemia, was given a cello to play at school and church, and Danilo, age 3, who has a heart condition, received a Power Wheels Batman battery operated car. Nearly 50 people attended the luncheon, held at The Willows Events Center in Industry. Danilo, 3, enjoys his “dream gift” of a Power Wheels car.

These are friendly words from years ago - but today, you think twice before opening your door to strangers. Will you be comfortable allowing strangers from an unfamiliar home care service into your parents’ home?
The Beaver County Cancer and Heart Association’s eighth annual “Let’s Have a Heart to Heart” event in November at Seven Oaks County Club had a good turnout. The keynote, “Heart of a Woman”, was given by Dr. Rina Gandhi. Workshop leaders included Chris Cosky and Leslie Benedetto, who spoke about self-care; Dr. Sharon Cowden and Janette Poppenberg, whose topic was exercise for breast cancer survivors; and Dr Karen Jerome-Zapadka, who addressed the epidemic of processed food diseases.
St. Barnabas Home Care is the answer.
The event was sponsored by Allegheny Health Network, Heritage Valley Health System, HIGHMARK, UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School, EATON, Exos, B-Well Nation, and DiNuzzo Index Advisors, Inc.

Go red in honor of National Wear Red Day and American Heart Month By now, it’s known that February represents matters of the heart—both in love and in our physical bodies. American Heart Month, a federal designated event, is an ideal time to focus on the health of your heart, as well as encourage your loved ones to do the same. On the first Friday of every February—this year it’s Friday, February 7—the nation comes together by wearing red. From landmarks to news anchors and neighborhoods to online communities, this annual call to action unites millions of people for a common goal: the eradication of heart disease and stroke. The first American Heart Month took place in February 1964 under the administration President Lyndon B. Johnson.
Know the warning signs of a heart attack When it comes to dealing with a heart attack, the key is to catch the warning signs early and call 911 as soon as you feel them. Don’t wait to get help if you are experiencing symptoms of heart attack warning signs. Some heart attacks are sudden and intense but most start slowly, with mild pain or discomfort. The most common signs are: • Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or it may go away then return. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain. • Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, back, neck, jaw or stomach. • Shortness of breath. This can occur with or without chest discomfort. • Other signs. Other possible signs include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness. As with men, women’s most common heart attack symptom is chest pain (angina) or discomfort; but women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the
other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea and vomiting, and back or jaw pain. Some women experiencing a heart attack describe upper back pressure that feels like squeezing or a rope being tied around them, lightheadedness or fainting. Be aware to not chalk up any of these symptoms to less life-threatening conditions like acid reflux, the flu or normal aging. The good news is that heart disease is preventable. Follow these tips: • See your doctor. Schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider to learn your personal risk for heart disease. • Quit smoking if you do smoke. It can cut your risk of coronary heart disease by 50 percent. • Exercise. Just walking 30 minutes a day can lower your risk for heart attack and stroke. • Modify your diet, if needed. Eat a whole-foods diet with plenty of vegetables and fruits, lean meats and heart-healthy fats. Eat as little processed food as possible. Source: American Heart Association.

Q &
Beaver County Office on Aging Bulletin Information & Referral Q&A
A
Question: What is I&R?
Answer: I&R stands for “Information and Referral.” The Beaver County Office on Aging provides information on available resources, both within our agency and in the community. Also, we provide referrals to these programs. Question: What sorts of information do you provide? Answer: We provide a wide variety of information of interest to older adults such as: how to access in-home services and long-term care, available housing resources, meeting food needs, accessing health insurance (Medicare/Medicaid), socialization opportunities, transportation programs and accessibility options. If we do not have the information you are seeking, we can refer you an appropriate resource.

Question: How do I contact the I&R department? Answer: We can be reached by phone, email or by just walking in to our office. Our phone number is (724) 847-2262 or (888) 548-2262. Or email Aging@ bcoa.us. Our physical address is 1020 Eighth Ave., Beaver Falls. We are also a presence at the monthly Senior Days at Center at the Mall, legislative-sponsored health fairs and various other community events. Question: If I call or email, how soon can I expect a response? Answer: We average around 600 calls per month. When you call our office, a support staff person will take your message and relay it to the I&R staff
By Tina Fabrizzi, RN, Assessment and I&R Supervisor Beaver County Office on Aging For Beaver County Senior News
person on duty. The I&R staff person returns the calls as they come in. We make every attempt to return calls by the end of the next business day, often sooner. The Aging email is checked during our normal business hours: Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Emails are answered in the same timeframe as phone calls. Question: If I walk-in without an appointment, will I be able to talk to someone? Answer: We make every attempt to accommodate walk-ins; however, there may be occasions when a staff member is not immediately available due to assisting other individuals who have scheduled appointments. Your patience and understanding are appreciated in these instances. It is always best to make an appointment if you want to come into our office. That way, you can be assured that someone is available to help you. Question: I am deaf or don’t speak English. Can you still provide assistance? Answer: Yes. We are able to arrange for translators to meet your needs. Question: What are the most common issues that individuals call about? Answer: By far, the most common questions have to do with accessing Home and Community Based programs (CHC Waiver), in-home services and health insurance counseling needs. We have specially trained counselors to assist with health insurance issues through our APPRISE program. Question: I am concerned about the welfare of my elderly neighbor. Can I&R help? Answer: We can. After listening to the issue, if there is concern for the health and safety of the individual, we may
refer you to Older Adult Protective Services to report the concern. The Beaver County Office on Aging has a contract with Achieva to provide protective services investigations. Alternately, you may call Achieva directly to make a report of need at (724) 775-1786. You can remain anonymous, if desired. Question: I am in the process of applying for a Home and Community Based Waiver Program and am overwhelmed. Is there someone available to help me with the enrollment process? Answer: Yes. We understand how confusing this can be. Part of I&R is “Person-Centered Counseling.” Specially trained counselors can help you navigate through the process and provide assistance gathering the necessary documentation needed to determine your eligibility. Question: Can my family member be paid to take care of me? Answer: The answer to that is “maybe.” Depending upon the program you are applying for and what your particular needs are, that may be possible within certain limitations. The program where this is permitted is the Community Health Choices Waiver where you must be considered Nursing Facility Clinically Eligible, as well as receive Medicare and Medicaid. Your family member, if approved, would be paid only for the time spent on direct hands-on care. Additionally, the paid caregiver cannot be a spouse, a child under age 18 nor a Power of Attorney. Question: Do you have a website? Answer: We can be found within the official Beaver County website: http://www.beavercountypa.gov/ Depts/OOA Here you will find a wealth of resources describing our programs and services, including the Beaver County Senior Resource Guide.

A new decade means a new census
Please be mindful as there could be someone trying to scam people during the Census. The Census will never ask anyone for their Social Security number, money or donations, bank or credit account numbers. If anyone asks you for this information, it is a scam and do not cooperate.
Happy 2020! As we enter a new decade, it is time to respond to the 2020 Census. The United States Census Bureau counts every person living in the 50 states, District of Columbia and five US territories. This time around, you have some choices on how to answer those questions: by mail, by phone, or through a computer or mobile device. By mid-March, you will receive an invitation by mail from the Census on how you would like to respond. The Census notes that some households will receive a paper questionnaire with the first invitation in March. You may respond online in English or in 12 additional languages. There also is a video in American Sign Language to guide you through responding online. You can respond by telephone in English or 12 additional languages. There will be an option to respond in English through TDD. By-mid April, the Census will mail a paper questionnaire to every household that has not already responded. There will be braille and large-print guides available online to assist you in completing the paper questionnaire. If you have not responded in any way by mid-May, a Census taker will visit your home so you can respond in person. You are required by law to complete the 2020 Census if you live in the United States. The Census will ask the following: • How many people are living or staying at your home April 1, 2020 • Whether the home is owned or rented • The sex of each person in your home • The age of each person in your home • The race of each person in your home • Whether a person in your home is of Hispanic, Latino or Spanish origin • The relationship of each person in your home. Your personal information is kept confidential, and the Census Bureau is bound by federal law to protect everyone’s information. Your data is used for statistical purposes. The Census results help determine how billions of dollars in federal fund-

SPOTLIGHT on Senior Concerns Winter equals soup making time By Margee Denver, Registered Dietitian Beaver County Office on Aging
Winter is upon us.
I wake in the morning darkness and eat dinner in the evening darkness. As it is, winter is a time to slow down and do projects like knitting, crocheting, beading and making soup. Making soup is my winter project. What is better than rich bowl of soup full of beans and vegetables? The nutrients in soup are just what a winter body needs to withstand the snow and the cold. One of my favorite healthy, hearty winter soups is lentil soup. It’s full of nutrients, comfort and with a slice of bread, a great meal. Lentil Soup

Senior Gardens is gearing up for another growing season The gardening season is right around the corner and an
opportunity for seniors to grow vegetables and flowers is almost upon us. Any Beaver County resident age 60 or older is eligible for gardening plots at the Beaver County Senior Gardens, which are managed by Brighton First.
Raised beds are becoming popular (4’ x 8’) and are no cost at the Senior Gardens, located on Western Avenue in Brighton Township. Water is available for a nominal fee of $5 per raised bed or $10 for a traditional plot. Limited garden spots are available. The plots are approximately 15’ x 20’, but they do go quickly. For more information, call Mike or Dolores Durham at (724) 728-0747.

Beaver County Office on Aging Bulletin Home safety assessments available Is
your mobility changing, and do you want to stay in your home as long as possible?
If you are receiving services through Community Health Choices or the Beaver County Office on Aging Options Care Management, contact your service coordinator or care manager about whether you qualify for a home safety assessment through those programs. The therapist will check the home for fall hazards and areas which may inhibit mobility. They can check for the need of grab bars, hand rails, raised toilet seats, tub or shower modifications, stair glides and ramps, among other things. The therapist will provide the consumer a safety recommendation checklist/report of the visit and a list of resources listing agencies which may be able to provide funding for updates.
Surprises for Shut-ins wraps up The Beaver County Office on Aging had another fantastic year with the Surprises for Shut-ins program. In its 33rd year, the agency provided a bag of gifts and a friendly visit to 444 people living in all parts of the county. The success of this program is due to the generosity of so many area residents, organizations and agencies who donate money and gifts to the program. Your generosity was so great this year that 10 wrapped gifts were given in each bag. Lots of volunteer stepped in to help; 115 individuals provided 436 volunteer hours of shopping, wrapping, bagging and delivering of gifts. Surprises for Shut-ins was the recipient of proceeds from Elmcroft of Chippewa’s Christmas Wonderland. The Office on Aging thanks everyone for your interest in helping us provide this popular and important program.
SSA announces cost-of-living adjustments for 2020 The
Social Security Administration (SSA) recently announced that Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits for nearly 69 million Americans will increase 1.6 percent in 2020. The 1.6 percent cost-of-living adjustment—referred to as COLA—began with benefits payable to more than 63 million Social Security beneficiaries last month. Increased payments to more than eight million SSI beneficiaries began on December 31, 2019. The maximum amount of earnings subject to Social Security tax (taxable maximum) has increased to $137,700. The earnings limit for workers who are younger than full retirement age (age 66 for those born from 1943 through 1954) has increased to $18,240. (SSA deducts $1 from benefits for each $2 earned over $18,240.) The earnings limit for individuals turning 66 in 2020 will increase to $48,600. (SSA deducts $1 from benefits for each $3 earned over $48,600 until the month the worker turns age 66.) There is no limit on earnings for workers who are full retirement age or older for the entire year. To learn more, read the Fact Sheet of 2020 Social Security Changes at ssa.gov/news/press/factsheets/colafacts2020. pdf.
