Grace Ondich works out weekly with Center at the Mall fitness instructor Tracy Costo.
LIFE Beaver County makes living independently at home an option for seniors In August of 2012, Beaver Falls resident Grace Ondich, 77, fell while in her apartment and broke her hip. This injury left her unable to live safely in her own residence. Then she learned about the LIFE Beaver County and was accepted into the program in April 2013. “When I first joined LIFE, I was in a wheelchair,” Grace recalls. “Once enrolled, I was able
to get involved in physical therapy and rehab, and gradually moved from using a wheelchair to a walker to a cane.” Once Grace was released from the physical therapy program and able to return home, she continued coming to the LIFE Day Center every Monday through Friday. “It was around this time that I learned about
the Center at the Mall and their fitness center,” she says. Because Grace was so motivated to continue her progress, LIFE Beaver County decided to offer her a three-month membership to the fitness center at Center at the Mall. She began taking public transportation from the LIFE center every Tuesday and Friday to work 2015 King Features Syndicate, Inc.

LIFE Beaver County makes living independently at home an option for seniors Continued from page 1 out at Center at the Mall, using resistance machines and a stationary bike. “By that time, I was walking pretty well without a cane. As of May 2015, I’d logged a total of 100 miles. My three months have expired and LIFE Beaver County is now sponsoring me for a six-month membership. I’m very happy with the way things have worked out. I really enjoy myself at the center and am thankful for it, because it really helps me. I keep going because of that. I would definitely recommend looking into LIFE Beaver County and Center at the Mall. They are both so helpful and it’s made a big difference for me.
Resistance training keeps Grace feeling strong.
Like Grace, most older adults wish to remain in their homes for as long as they possibly can yet for many, living at home or in the home of a caregiver is only an option when additional support is available. LIFE Beaver County, a partnership of Lutheran SeniorLife and Heritage Valley Health System, has been helping older adults live independently in their own homes for more 11 years.
Participants have a full range of medical, social and rehabilitation services available, based on individual need, at no cost. Services include primary and specialty physician care; adult day services, including recreational programs; in-home personal care, housekeeping and laundry; prescription coverage and medication management; physical, occupational

Give your heart some extra love during American Heart Month of quality of life that comes from strokes and heart disease, and you can see why it is wise to put heart-health on the front burner. Of course, it should start with a visit to your healthcare team and a blood pressure check. By Judy Dodd, MS, RDN, LDN For Beaver County Senior News

o you think of hearts when February approaches? You should, since February 14 is Valentine’s Day, a time to share love and appreciation with the important people in your life. But even more importantly, February is American Heart Month, a time to put a positive emphasis on your health and that of those same important people you honor with valentines!

Cardiovascular disease is still the leading cause of death in the United States. It is estimated that one in every three deaths is related to heart health and stroke. This equals 2,200 deaths each day. Add to this the loss
Many of us already know the basics of a heart-healthy lifestyle but just in case you need a refresher, here are some key points: • Diet. Although the link between dietary fat and heart disease has been in the news, the bottom line is still the same. The emphasis should be on a diet that includes vegetables, fruit, whole grains and low-fat protein sources. That translates to low-fat dairy choices (cheese, yogurt, milk) or dairy substitutes (soy or almond beverage), beans and other legumes, chicken or turkey (remove the skin before you eat it) and fish. Round it out with reasonable-for-you-size servings of lean beef or pork. Total fat is an issue but the key is choosing “healthier” fats, limiting saturated fats (mostly
found in animal products) and avoiding trans-fats (fat with properties closer to being saturated and heartunhealthy). • Food choices and additions. What you choose and how you cook and flavor food is important. Sodium (a component in table salt and some ingredients added to food) should be kept under control. The goal for the day for most of us is 1.500-2.300 milligrams. Not all sodium ingredients taste “salty” so reading labels before you buy or order should be a routine. While you are looking at the soup label, check out bread, processed cheese, deli meats, frozen and shelf-stable meals and, of course, snack foods. Sodium has a way of being a component of a lot of foods. And why should you care? Sodium is related to blood pressure control and can pave the track to stroke. • Lifestyle choices. Smoking, extra weight, and low levels of activity are other factors that add to your risk of heart disease and stroke.
Exercise doesn’t have to be heavy duty and should be safe for you. Aiming for 2030 minutes of moving each day is a start. Walk, stretch, swim, yoga and (if you are up to it) dancing all count. • Get help from qualified professionals. Your healthcare team, a registered dietitian to walk you through your food and nutrition choices, and a trainer who can work with your prescription for safe exercise are all important. Check out millionhearts. hhs.gov for some steps you can take. So if celebrating Valentine’s Day involves eating, think broiled chicken or fish, a side of whole grain rice seasoned with herbs, and steamed or oven-roasted veggies instead of the house special of fried chicken or fish with fries and slaw. Save your fat goal for the day to enjoy a mini dessert or have strawberries on angel food cake with a dash of whipped cream or a small scoop of ice cream. Give your heart some love! BCSN

“Let’s Do Lunch” By Angela Gentile, Contributing Editor Beaver County Senior News Program Monitor, Beaver County Office on Aging For Beaver County Senior News February 14 is Valentine’s Day, a day to spend time with the people we love doing the things that we love to do. I have many wonderful friends and family members that I love, and they all know that I look forward to lunch time. “Let’s do lunch.” That old saying has different meanings depending on how it is used and to whom it is said. If a good friend or possible suitor says, “let’s do lunch sometime,” you may assume you would be getting together in the near future to meet and possibly have lunch. Wouldn’t it be lovely to meet an old friend and have lunch for Valentine’s Day? We all know there are many good places to eat in Beaver County in almost every community. Valentine’s Day may be a busy time at the local establishments so you may want to plan in advance by calling ahead or arrive early in case you have to wait in line. Lunch is important to me—especially during the weekday. It is a time of the day to get away from my desk, the computer and the telephone and enjoy
One of the best-kept secrets for Beaver County adults ages 60 and older is the daily lunch served at the five Beaver County Senior Community Centers. a healthy meal. To sit in our quiet lunchroom and read a book or magazine gives me the opportunity to calm down, relax and rejuvenate for the afternoon. You see, I do not pack the average lunch. I rarely pack a plain old sandwich. My gardening and cooking skills contribute to making interesting meals. My coworkers comment on my interesting lunches and often say, “that smells so good, what did you make?” Lasagna, chili, tuna salad, hummus with vegetables and homemade soups are just a few of the meals I prepare. In fact, many times my coworkers ask me for the recipes and always love when I make my pumpkin hummus or pizzelles.

Ombudsmen serve a valuable role in advocating for older adults Some other things the team must look at during the visit. Is the Ombudsman poster visibly posted in all areas of the facility? Are residents appropriately dressed for the season? Do residents have private telephone access? Do residents have water/beverages available? Is the activities calendar posted and adhered to? Are available activities appropriate for the residents? Are there activities for men and for younger residents? By Tesi Dye, Ombudsman Supervisor For Beaver County Senior News

Are outside/community activities available? Does staff refer to residents by name and protect their privacy?
he Beaver County Office on Aging Ombudsman team includes a supervisor, four staff and nine volunteers. All have received extensive training and are certified by the Pennsylvania Long Term Care Ombudsman Department.
Does staff wear visible name badges?
The Ombudsman team has many responsibilities. They advocate for residents in nursing, personal care and Dom Care homes, as well as participants of adult day care and other long-term care services. They conduct training and provide education for residents, family members, staff and community organizations. The team is a source of information on resident rights, discharge matters, how to get good care in a facility and many other related topics. Upon resident request, the Ombudsman will investigate, attempt to verify and resolve complaints as directed by the resident. The team attends resident council meetings and licensing exit surveys. They also train residents in the Pennsylvania Empowered Expert Residents program (PEER) and run follow-up meetings with each PEER group.
Are substitute meals and food choice available?
The Ombudsman team conducts unannounced facility coverage visits. These are quality assurance visits that occur at least monthly but many times more frequently. As directed by the state Ombudsman office, the Ombudsman is to speak with residents, family members and staff during the visit. They observe as staff interacts with residents and families. The team provides brochures and information on the Ombudsman and PEER programs along with resident rights. They ask residents and families about the care at the facility and if there are any problems. They discuss self-resolution and explain how the Ombudsman can investigate complaints.

Do meals match posted menus? Can residents ask for seconds and are snacks available?
Are call bells within reach and answered promptly? Are the facility and resident rooms clean and odor free? Is the temperature comfortable for the residents? Is the lighting adequate? Are the sound and voice levels acceptable? Are there designated smoking areas? Are fire extinguishers available and currently inspected? Is there a current emergency evacuation and exit plan? Did staff interrupt or try to interfere with resident visitation? Do staff and residents know about the Ombudsman program? All members of the Ombudsman team must wear purple or gold badges when they are visiting. The badge indicates their level of certification and clearly states their name, county and that they are an Ombudsman. These badges have large print for better visibility. If you need information, have a problem or would like to arrange to have an Ombudsman provide training or speak at your community organization meeting, call (724) 847-2262 and ask for the Ombudsman Department. This is a delicious Valentine’s Day snack that does not require you to turn on the oven. Make this special treat to share with your grandchildren. Big kids like it, too.
Did you know that Camp Pendleton in California was named for someone who was born in Rochester? It was Joseph Henry Pendleton, born June 2, 1860. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the US Marine Corps July 1, 1884. He served in many areas of the country, as well as overseas. Pendleton was promoted many times, with the final promotion to Major General in 1923. He started serving in the San Diego area in 1914 and advocated for a major Marine Corps installation there due to its good weather and harbor. He retired in 1924. Two months after his death, construction started on a Marine Corps base on the former Rancho Santa Margarita Y Las Flores near Oceanside. The decision was made to name the base in his honor and on September 25, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt was present for the dedication of Camp Joseph H. Pendleton.

Tennis instruction is available for seniors at Bradys Run indoor tennis facility

o you want to learn something new this year that will allow you to improve your health and fitness? Tennis is the perfect sport for seniors. It burns calories, strengthens muscles, increases bone mass and lowers body fat. Best of all, you can have fun playing tennis with friends and make it a part of your weekly routine. Tennis is a sport that can be played for a lifetime. It’s a social activity that allows you to meet new people who like to be active. Beginner senior tennis clinics provide group instruction with basics of forehands, backhands, volleys and serving, along with games. For those who would like the opportunity to play tennis but have a reduced range of motion or movement, lower-compression tennis balls can be used that move more slowly, bounce lower and don’t travel as far as regular tennis balls. Just imagine your kids’ or grandkids’ faces when you tell them you are learning to play tennis.
